in Tesla, Peloton, took new positions in Carvana, GM, crypto names, and dumped Zoom and Twitter in fourth quarter

Even as shares of Tesla Inc. sank last year, billionaire investor George Soros appeared to find something to like in the electric-vehicle maker -- and some other beaten-down names -- as the year came to a close.

His Soros Fund Management scooped up 242,399 shares of Tesla $(TSLA)$ during the fourth quarter, according to a filing on Monday, a roughly 270% increase, bringing the fund's total holdings to 332,046 Tesla shares. Tesla stock crept 0.2% higher after hours on Monday.

The move came as more analysts have grown frustrated with Tesla's chief executive, Elon Musk, following his purchase of Twitter in October. Many on Wall Street viewed that acquisition as a distraction from running Tesla, which faces major questions about competition.

But Tesla, and Musk, loomed over Soros' moves in other ways. During the quarter, the fund also bought 500,000 shares of Cathie Wood's Ark Innovation ETF $(ARKK)$, whose biggest holding is Tesla, and whose value sank through 2022.

However, as Musk prepared to take the reins at Twitter, the filing shows that Soros cashed out his position in the social-media platform during the fourth quarter. Over that time, he also unloaded his position in pandemic-era staple Zoom Video Communications Inc. He also took a new stake in struggling used-car seller Carvana Co. (CVNA), as well as a new stake in Lyft Inc. $(LYFT)$, snapping up more than 83 million shares. Those shares took a big hit following its earnings report last week. Soros also hiked his stake in Uber Technologies Inc. $(UBER)$.

Soros also took more of an interest in crypto plays, after risk-averse investors backed away from the sector. The fund took a new stake of nearly 40 million shares in Marathon Digital Holdings $(MARA)$, and acquired 17.2 millions shares of Block Inc. $(SQ)$. Closing a trading window is widely understood to be a move to curb insider trading ahead of a significant business announcement.

Roku declined Fortune’s request for comment; Netflix did not respond.

While discussions between the two companies are unconfirmed, Netflix is looking to fix its business as it attempts to weather a tough start to the year. In April, Netflix announced an unprecedented loss of nearly 200,000 subscribers in its first quarter, with greater losses projected to follow. After that announcement, the company's stock price immediately plunged 35%.

On Wednesday, Netflix’s shares rose 2%.

Netflix’s disappointing performance is partly the result of the pandemic, which caused a boom in streaming as people hunkered down at home—that then reversed as COVID ebbed. It’s also due to increased streaming competition over the past several years. Closing a trading window is widely understood to be a move to curb insider trading ahead of a significant business announcement.Roku declined Fortune’s request for comment; Netflix did not respond. While discussions between the two companies are unconfirmed, Netflix is looking to fix its business as it attempts to weather a tough start to the year. In April, Netflix announced an unprecedented loss of nearly 200,000 subscribers in its first quarter, with greater losses projected to follow. After that announcement, the company's stock price immediately plunged 35%.On Wednesday, Netflix’s shares rose 2%.Netflix’s disappointing performance is partly the result of the pandemic, which caused a boom in streaming as people hunkered down at home—that then reversed as COVID ebbed. It’s also due to increased streaming competition over the past several years. Namely, the investments the company has made in both expanding the workforce and building out fulfillment capacity – with the ecommerce giant now having an excess of both.It has been suggested that on top of being hit with increasingly difficult macro conditions, Amazon misjudged the waning demand in a post-pandemic world. However, Evercore analyst Mark Mahaney seems more confident after hosting a call with Marc Wulfraat, President and Founder of MWPVL, a consulting firm that monitors Amazon’s growth.“We came away incrementally positive on Amazon’s ability to address its excess-capacity issue over the next 2-4 quarters, with our belief that 2 will be more likely than 4,” the 5-star analyst explained. To solve the issue, however, Amazon will need to make some changes. One will be to reduce the workforce to the tune of around 65,000 while also putting a pause on any hiring. Cutting back square footage growth expansion by 30 million square feet to 45 million could also be required and should take between 2-4 quarters (by Q1:23).“This sq. ft reduction is expected to come not only from existing and active buildings,” explained Mahaney, “but also from delaying or halting new capacity expansion projects.” According to Wulfraat’s tracking, Amazon has already walked back on 22 U.S. projects which add up to 8 million sq ft.Overall, considering the stock is currently trading at a 40% discount to its average historical EV/EBITDA multiple, the analyst believes most of the capacity issues are already “priced in.”As such, Amazon remains one of Mahaney’s “Top Longs in the Internet MegaCap sector.” The analyst sticks with an Outperform (i.e., Buy) rating on the stock, backed by a $205 price target. Should the figure be met, investors are looking at one-year upside of 62%.Almost all on the Street agree. Barring one Hold and Sell, each, all 36 other recent analyst reviews are positive, making the consensus view here a Strong Buy. Going by the $180.13 average target, shares are expected to move ~43% higher over the next 12 months.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":287,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":9056691369,"gmtCreate":1655000679151,"gmtModify":1676535545782,"author":{"id":"4114214582164872","authorId":"4114214582164872","name":"Anilgn76","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b3cba64e77d6a3cc4903ea6fadca49c3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4114214582164872","authorIdStr":"4114214582164872"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"I think this stock is definitely a buy.. Given this environment, has the stock fallen far enough to become a buy?

After the Split

On June 6, Amazon (AMZN) put a 20-for-1 stock split into effect. The process effectively cut the firm's share price to 1/20th of its previous level -- making AMZN affordable to a new cohort of shareholders.

The move to make the stock accessible to more retail investors initially had the desired effect. The stock rose 2% on June 6, its seventh gain in the previous eight sessions. Shares also recorded their highest finish in more than a month.

These gains were short-lived, however. Deteriorating market sentiment has put pressure on AMZN, amid rising fears about inflation and the prospect that increasing interest rates will eventually trigger a recession.

In intraday trading on Friday, shares have fallen more than 5%. This marked the fourth consecutive day of declines, including a 4% slide during the previous session. All told, shares have dropped nearly 12% since the day after the stock split.AMZN now trades at about $110 per share, still off a 52-week low of $101.26 reached last month. This remains a far cry from the 52-week high of $188.65 reached last summer, as the company benefited from pandemic-induced demand for online shopping.Shares have now fallen about 42% from that peak.Is AMZN a Buy?Even with the declines in 2022, the sentiment on Wall Street remains overwhelmingly positive towards Amazon (AMZN). Of the 52 analysts surveyed by Seeking Alpha, only three have less than a Buy rating on the stock. All told, 36 analysts have a Strong Buy opinion, while another 13 have issued a Buy recommendation -- meaning 94% of market experts have a bullish view of the stock. There is also one Hold rating, one Sell opinion and one Strong Sell recommendation.Quantitative measures have a more cautious view of the stock. Overall, Seeking Alpha's Quant Ratings view AMZN as a Hold. The online retailer gets high marks for profitability and growth, with an A+ and B+ in those categories, respectively. However, the Quant Ratings give the stock a C for momentum and an F for valuation.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":151,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9934162606,"gmtCreate":1663205511405,"gmtModify":1676537226948,"author":{"id":"4114214582164872","authorId":"4114214582164872","name":"Anilgn76","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b3cba64e77d6a3cc4903ea6fadca49c3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4114214582164872","authorIdStr":"4114214582164872"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Interesting move!","listText":"Interesting move!","text":"Interesting move!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9934162606","repostId":"1184746636","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":420,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9053462300,"gmtCreate":1654572774400,"gmtModify":1676535471714,"author":{"id":"4114214582164872","authorId":"4114214582164872","name":"Anilgn76","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b3cba64e77d6a3cc4903ea6fadca49c3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4114214582164872","authorIdStr":"4114214582164872"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Fantastic long growth stock!","listText":"Fantastic long growth stock!","text":"Fantastic long growth stock!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9053462300","repostId":"2241069289","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2241069289","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1654571416,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2241069289?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-06-07 11:10","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Amazon Stock Has a Bright Future Despite Capacity Issues, Says Top Analyst","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2241069289","media":"TipRanks","summary":"Amazon’s (AMZN) latest quarterly report was marred by the rising costs related to operational issues","content":"
\n
Amazon’s (AMZN) latest quarterly report was marred by the rising costs related to operational issues. Going by the $180.13 average target, shares are expected to move ~43% higher over the next 12 months.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":287,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9954267120,"gmtCreate":1676418223961,"gmtModify":1676418227413,"author":{"id":"4114214582164872","authorId":"4114214582164872","name":"Anilgn76","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b3cba64e77d6a3cc4903ea6fadca49c3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4114214582164872","authorIdStr":"4114214582164872"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Interesting","listText":"Interesting","text":"Interesting","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9954267120","repostId":"2311516272","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2311516272","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Dow Jones publishes the world’s most trusted business news and financial information in a variety of media.","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Dow Jones","id":"106","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/150f88aa4d182df19190059f4a365e99"},"pubTimestamp":1676379060,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2311516272?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-02-14 20:51","market":"us","language":"en","title":"George Soros Loads up on Tesla and These Other Beaten-Down Stocks","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2311516272","media":"Dow Jones","summary":"Soros Fund Management boosted its stake in Tesla, Peloton, took new positions in Carvana, GM, crypto","content":"

Soros Fund Management boosted its stake in Tesla, Peloton, took new positions in Carvana, GM, crypto names, and dumped Zoom and Twitter in fourth quarter

During the quarter, the fund also bought 500,000 shares of Cathie Wood's Ark Innovation ETF $(ARKK)$, whose biggest holding is Tesla, and whose value sank through 2022.However, as Musk prepared to take the reins at Twitter, the filing shows that Soros cashed out his position in the social-media platform during the fourth quarter. Over that time, he also unloaded his position in pandemic-era staple Zoom Video Communications Inc. (ZM).Elsewhere, Soros loaded up on other embattled companies. The fund acquired more than 83 million shares in fitness-bike maker Peloton Interactive Inc. $(PTON)$ for a nearly 370% increase in the fund's stake in the company, a onetime gainer from a surge in at-home workouts during the pandemic. $(UBER)$.Soros also took more of an interest in crypto plays, after risk-averse investors backed away from the sector. The fund took a new stake of nearly 40 million shares in Marathon Digital Holdings $(MARA)$, and acquired 17.2 millions shares of Block Inc. $(SQ)$. It took a smaller stake in crypto-friendly bank Silvergate Capital Corp. (SI) and also boosted its stakes in MicroStrategy Inc. $(MSTR.AU)$.The filing also showed new stakes in big financial names $Capital One Financial Corp(COF-N)$. $(COF)$, Citigroup Inc. (C) and Discover Financial Services $(DFS)$. Within autos, Soros Fund Management raised its stake in Ford Motor Co. $(F)$ by 6.4% to 83 million shares. The fund also acquired 500,000 shares of General Motors Co. $(GM)$.The fund also fattened its stake in online craft marketplace Etsy Inc. $(ETSY)$ and media giant Walt Disney Co. $(DIS)$, which is awash in drama over Chief Executive Bob Iger's return, activist pressure, layoffs and restructuring. The fund also bought millions of shares for a new stake in cloud-software provider Fastly $(FSLY)$, whose shares finished 27% higher on Monday following an upgrade from analysts at BofA.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":172,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9051429165,"gmtCreate":1654733994057,"gmtModify":1676535500259,"author":{"id":"4114214582164872","authorId":"4114214582164872","name":"Anilgn76","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b3cba64e77d6a3cc4903ea6fadca49c3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4114214582164872","authorIdStr":"4114214582164872"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Will be good if it happens","listText":"Will be good if it happens","text":"Will be good if it happens","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9051429165","repostId":"2242841272","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2242841272","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1654732226,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2242841272?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-06-09 07:50","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Roku’s Stock Jumps 9% Amid Rumors of a Netflix Acquisition","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2242841272","media":"Fortune","summary":"Shares of streaming company Roku soared 9% on Wednesday amid rumors that Netflix is considering an a","content":"

Shares of streaming company Roku soared 9% on Wednesday amid rumors that Netflix is considering an acquisition.

Roku employees have been speculating about the potential acquisition for several weeks since the company closed its insider trading window, making it impossible for them to sell their vested stocks, Business Insider reported first on Wednesday.
