Wall Street’s quarterly earnings show is getting underway and before the month is out, Apple (AAPL)is expected deliver its fiscal third quarter report (June quarter, scheduled for July 28).While investor concerns mostly center on the effect of high inflation and iPhone demand, Evercore’s Amit Daryanani believes that despite data points skewing to the negative –  these include weak Chinese smartphone data (-9%), App Store growth slowing down to ~4%, and companies such as Micron noting “weakness” in smartphone/PC demand – AAPL has provided a conservative enough guide which will allow for another beat (although possibly a more modest one compared to prior ones) in the June quarter.The Street is looking for ~1.4% growth, a display Daryanani believes should not be difficult to meet. While Apple did not give revenue guidance for the quarter, the company did suggest the quarter’s growth rate would have mirrored the March quarter (+9%), if not for several headwinds including an FX hit to the tune of 300bps, 150bps from Russia, and $4-$8 billion in supply constraints.However, the analyst notes that Apple has “tended to overestimate supply headwinds over the past few quarters,” and therefore believes it is possible the supply and FX issues are “less severe than Apple assumed.”That said, all eyes will be on the September quarter guide and here Daryanani is not quite so confident. Due to the “challenging f/x environment and evolving macro situation,” Daryanani thinks there’s potential for the September quarter guide to “qualitatively be below current expectations.”As such, while the analyst has made no changes to the June quarter forecast, the September quarter estimates are lowered to revenue/EPS of $88 billion/$1.28, respectively. Both are below Street expectations, which stand at $90.3 billion/$1.32.“Net/net,” Daryanani summed up, “we are relatively neutral this quarter as we think Apple is contending with numerous headwinds, but these risks should be adequately understood and reflected in expectations.”To this end, Daryanani maintains an Outperform (i.e., Buy) rating along with a $180 price target. The implication for investors? Upside of 22% from current levels.28 analysts have posted AAPL reviews during the past 3 months, which break down as 22 to 6 in favor of Buys over Holds, and all coalesce to a Strong Buy consensus view. Since the time of the stock&#39;s initial public offering in 2015, the company has grown its revenue by well over 4,000% while delivering a total return of approximately 1,300% for investors.</p><p>The macro environment is impacting consumer spending right now, but the buying and selling of goods online isn&#39;t going anywhere. Shopify provides the full spectrum of services, web technologies, and integrations required to launch and support an online business, and the company&#39;s leading market share means its platform is ideally placed to benefit from both the near-term and long-term growth of the explosive e-commerce market.</p><p>It&#39;s certainly not a stretch of the imagination that Shopify could augment its current share price by 5 times or more over the next decade.</p><h2>2. Vertex Pharmaceuticals</h2><p>Healthcare stocks often possess a unique advantage during difficult economic backdrops, because the products and services these companies provide enjoy steady demand that&#39;s not subject to the cyclicality other industries face. In the case of <b>Vertex Pharmaceuticals</b> specifically, its focus on the rare disease drug market has enabled it to deliver astonishing growth and consistent shareholder returns throughout the years.</p><p>To date, Vertex Pharmaceuticals has four approved products on the market. All of these drugs treat cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that affects more than 100,000 people globally. The prevalence of cystic fibrosis is only increasing, and it&#39;s estimated about 1,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with the illness every year.</p><p>While Vertex Pharmaceuticals effectively dominates the fast-growing cystic fibrosis drug market, this is far from the only catalyst on which it can launch its business to future growth. It is actively building out its pipeline of therapeutic candidates targeting a wide variety of rare diseases and will soon seek approval for exa-cel, a treatment for the rare blood disorders sickle cell and beta thalassemia that it developed with its long-term partner <b>CRISPR Therapeutics</b>. If exa-cel is given the regulatory green light, it will be the first CRISPR product ever approved for a genetic illness.</p><p>Over the past three years alone, a time of broad volatility for companies across a wide variety of sectors, Vertex Pharmaceuticals has delivered a total return of 34%, while its revenue and net income have risen 109% and 178%, respectively, during that same period. It has also increased its cash flow from operations to the tune of about 150% during that three-year window.</p><p>Given the company&#39;s widening footprint in the rare disease drug market and its steady track record, there&#39;s no reason to think Vertex Pharmaceuticals can&#39;t compound its share price returns several times over in the years ahead.</p><h2>3. Teladoc Health</h2><p><b>Teladoc Health</b> was one of the leading forces in the rapidly evolving telehealth market before COVID-19. The onset of the pandemic accelerated its growth trajectory and the pace of innovation in this space, and the future will only multiply the need for effective, full-service virtual care solutions. Teladoc&#39;s platform is ideally positioned to benefit from these long-lasting tailwinds, and despite what its share price might indicate, the company is already doing so.</p><p>There&#39;s no denying now that Teladoc probably overpaid for Livongo when it bought the health-tech platform in 2020, and that was the driving force behind the nearly $10 billion in impairment charges the company reported in the first half of 2022.</p><p>However, those eye-popping losses seem to be gradually retreating into the background. Teladoc&#39;s net loss dropped to $74 million in the most recent quarter, a net loss of $0.45 per share compared to a net loss of $0.53 in the year-ago period.</p><p>Meanwhile, Teladoc&#39;s third-quarter revenue jumped 17% year over year to $611 million. The company is profitable on a free-cash-flow basis, having generated free cash flow of $20 million in the quarter. It also ended the period with $900 million of cash and investments on its balance sheet.</p><p>Its position as one of the key platforms at the forefront of the $84 billion telehealth industry bodes well for its potential going forward.</p><h2>4. Airbnb</h2><p>The global travel industry may be slowing down as fears of a far-reaching recession take hold, but <b>Airbnb</b> continues to go from strength to strength. It&#39;s becoming increasingly apparent that Airbnb&#39;s growth trajectory isn&#39;t predicated solely around trends within the tourism sector.</p><p>This is largely due to the fact Airbnb&#39;s platform caters to far more than short-term travelers. Digital nomads, remote workers looking for long-term stays, and tenants seeking alternatives to a regular lease structure also use the Airbnb platform.</p><p>In the second quarter, long-term stays -- which are bookings of 28 days or more -- had risen 25% year over year. By the third quarter, long-term stays accounted for approximately 20% of all bookings on the platform. Wall Street’s quarterly earnings show is getting underway and before the month is out, Apple (AAPL)is expected deliver its fiscal third quarter report (June quarter, scheduled for July 28).While investor concerns mostly center on the effect of high inflation and iPhone demand, Evercore’s Amit Daryanani believes that despite data points skewing to the negative –  these include weak Chinese smartphone data (-9%), App Store growth slowing down to ~4%, and companies such as Micron noting “weakness” in smartphone/PC demand – AAPL has provided a conservative enough guide which will allow for another beat (although possibly a more modest one compared to prior ones) in the June quarter.The Street is looking for ~1.4% growth, a display Daryanani believes should not be difficult to meet. While Apple did not give revenue guidance for the quarter, the company did suggest the quarter’s growth rate would have mirrored the March quarter (+9%), if not for several headwinds including an FX hit to the tune of 300bps, 150bps from Russia, and $4-$8 billion in supply constraints.However, the analyst notes that Apple has “tended to overestimate supply headwinds over the past few quarters,” and therefore believes it is possible the supply and FX issues are “less severe than Apple assumed.”That said, all eyes will be on the September quarter guide and here Daryanani is not quite so confident. Due to the “challenging f/x environment and evolving macro situation,” Daryanani thinks there’s potential for the September quarter guide to “qualitatively be below current expectations.”As such, while the analyst has made no changes to the June quarter forecast, the September quarter estimates are lowered to revenue/EPS of $88 billion/$1.28, respectively. Both are below Street expectations, which stand at $90.3 billion/$1.32.“Net/net,” Daryanani summed up, “we are relatively neutral this quarter as we think Apple is contending with numerous headwinds, but these risks should be adequately understood and reflected in expectations.”To this end, Daryanani maintains an Outperform (i.e., Buy) rating along with a $180 price target. Amazon landed some marquee customers, such as upscale hotel chain <b>Hilton Worldwide Holdings</b>. In February, Amazon announced its plans to roll out Amazon Care nationwide.</p><p>Yet cracks began to surface. Earlier this month, the <i>Washington Post</i> reported that Amazon&#39;s obsession with customer satisfaction and efficiency was making it difficult for it to follow medical best practices proposed by healthcare professionals. <i>The</i> <i>Washington Post </i>also noted that a shortage of nurses was further crimping Amazon&#39;s expansion plans.</p><p>Still, Lindsay&#39;s memo came as a surprise. Jassy highlighted Amazon Care as an example of &#34;iterative innovation&#34; in his letter to shareholders in April. In July, Amazon struck a deal to acquire primary care chain <b>One Medical</b> for roughly $3.9 billion, further signaling the company&#39;s growing healthcare ambitions. Amazon is also reportedly attempting to acquire home health services provider <b>Signify Health</b>, according to <i>The</i> <i>Wall Street Journal</i>.</p><p>It now appears that Amazon is planning to use acquisitions to alter course, rather than beef up its Amazon Care offerings.</p><p>&#34;We&#39;ve gathered and listened to extensive feedback from our enterprise customers and their employees, and evolved the service to continuously improve the experience for customers,&#34; Lindsay said. &#34;However, despite these efforts, we&#39;ve determined that Amazon Care isn&#39;t the right long-term solution for our enterprise customers.&#34;</p><p>Yet Amazon Care&#39;s setbacks will not result in a total loss. Like it&#39;s done many times in the past, Amazon will apply the lessons from its Amazon Care experiment to its future healthcare endeavors.</p><p>&#34;As we take our learnings from Amazon Care, we will continue to invent, learn from our customers and industry partners, and hold ourselves to the highest standards as we further help reimagine the future of healthcare,&#34; Lindsay said.</p><h2>So, is Amazon stock still a buy?</h2><p>Although Amazon Care&#39;s failure is disappointing, there&#39;s no reason to panic. Amazon derives most of its sales from its e-commerce operations and most of its profits from its cloud computing division. Healthcare is an intriguing opportunity, but it&#39;s not central to Amazon&#39;s business.</p><p>Thus, there&#39;s no need for investors to rush to sell Amazon&#39;s stock. If you thought Amazon&#39;s stock was a buy before this Amazon Care news broke, there&#39;s little reason to alter your bullish view of the e-commerce and cloud computing titan.</p><p>Moreover, shutting down Amazon Care could make it easier for Amazon to gain regulatory approval for its pending acquisition of One Medical. Amazon likely views One Medical&#39;s convenient primary care model as a superior approach with a greater likelihood of long-term success.
