However, over the past month or so, I have become concerned that its prices have risen ahead of its fundamentals. Since my last bullish article on it about 1 month ago, the stock price has rallied by more than 44% (see the chart below), while the S&P 500 (SP500) rose by 5.19%. Under the background, the thesis of this article is to argue for a downgrade from “buy” to “hold.” I see the stock prices currently at a near-term peak. And new buyers would face much more downside risks than upside potential. The risk calculus for existing holders to sell is a bit different if you have capital gain taxes to consider.

Source: Seeking Alpha

In the remainder of this article, I will detail my concerns, and they fall into the following 3 buckets:

On the technical front, the stock is very overbought, and the current rally is not supported by large volumes.

A large reason for the recent rally is catalyzed by Ford (F) and General Motors’ (GM) announcement surrounding the supercharging stations, in my mind. And I will argue why the market reaction is overly optimistic.

Finally, its insider trading activities have been dominated by selling recently. And I will explain why I interpret these activities as a sign for ordinary investors to stop adding/buying TSLA shares too.

Technical signs

On the technical front, there are a few signs that the stock price has reached a near-term peak. As seen in the chart below, the Relative Strength Index (“RSI”) has been above 70 since around June. And it currently hovers around 86, which is considered to be squarely in overbought territory. The rapid rise really is not accompanied by large/expanding trading volume, either. The current trading volume is substantially lower than that seen in the February rally earlier in the year. In the past six months, the price range with the most trading volume is around $190 to $200, far below the current price of $260.

Source: stockcharts.com

Overreaction to the supercharge station news

As aforementioned, a crucial catalyst for the latest price surge is the spate of announcements surrounding TSLA Supercharger stations, in my opinion (see the chart above). General Motors announced on June 8th (see this New York Times report for more details) that its electric vehicles will adopt Tesla's Superchargers. And Ford also announced a similar move shortly afterward. These announcements were interpreted as a sign that Tesla's charging stations have now become the industry standard for electric vehicles in the United States, paving the way for our EV future.

There are certainly merits in such an interpretation. TSLA CEO Elon Musk himself commented that such unification “is going to be a fundamentally great thing for the advancement of E.V. adoption.” However, I view the degree of the stock price advancement to be an overly optimistic reaction. It is important to remember that the charge station is just one piece of the EV puzzle. Tesla still faces a number of challenges, including the need to continue to improve its vehicles and manufacturing processes, and the need to compete with other automakers that are also investing heavily in EVs.

Even just on the charge station department itself, it is also worth noting that the announcement did not come with any specific details about how Tesla and GM/F would work together to make it happen. For example, it is not clear how much Tesla will charge GM/F to use its Superchargers, or how many Superchargers will be made available to GM/F drivers. These details could have a significant impact on the financial impact of the agreement for Tesla.

And Tesla has a long way to go to expand its Supercharger station network, requiring a substantial amount of CAPEX investments in the years to come. Take the Richmond, VA, area as an example. This is where I live and have first-hand information (well, you may call it second-hand information). In an area of about 50 miles by 100 miles, there is only a handful of TSLA charge stations (see the chart below). We (my friends and myself) constantly complain about the lack of availability, and most of us are not brave enough to drive out of the area (yet).

Source: Google maps

Now, taking a more global view outside my neighborhood, the company recently reported having about a total of 45,000 charging stalls installed globally. It’s an impressive number which makes it the biggest charging network. However, my view is that the network also suffers insufficient availability, very similar to my neighborhood. Out of its current 45k charging stalls, about 5k was added in the last 5 months and about 10k in the past 10 months. Looking ahead, I see the need for it to at least double the number of charging stalls in the next 1~2 years. It’s a demanding task that will cost substantial financial CAPEX, political capital, and also management attention.

Source: InsideEVs

Tesla’s insider selling activities

Finally, the insiders’ activities are dominated by selling. Usually, I do not interpret insider selling as a bearish sign. Insiders can sell for a range of reasons unrelated to business fundamentals (buying a new house/yacht, divorce, et al). However, when the activities are so dominated by selling, I have to pay attention.

To wit, in the past 12 months, there have been a total of 241 insider transactions (see the chart below). All of them have been selling activities, with a sizable cumulative amount of $14.5 billion. In June 2023 alone, there had been a total of 8 insider selling activities between prices of $200 and $260.

Source: DataRoma

Other risks and final thoughts

There are a few other downside and upside risks besides those analyzed above. At the same time, raw material prices are currently hovering at elevated levels and like to remain so as inflation remains relatively high, and the Russian/Ukraine situation continues to bottleneck supply. Considering these uncertainties, my model for its growth and profitability is based on a set of more conservative delivery and margin assumptions as shown in the chart below (more details of this model can be found in one of my earlier articles). Also as seen, under these parameters, Tesla's current valuation is quite expensive. Its EV/EBITDA multiple sits around 46x. It is quite close to the target 40x~50x range assigned by leading institutions such as Bank of America. In terms of upside risk, market momentum really is the main one I see at this point. My view is that the current market price has already factored in all the near-term catalysts.

All told, TSLA has been one of the most successful bull theses I’ve developed recently. However, currently, I see its stock prices reaching a short-term peak. As a result, in the near term, I am seeing more downside risks than upside potential for new buyers. (NASDAQ:TSLA). The risk calculus for existing holders to sell is a bit different if you have capital gain taxes to consider.Source: Seeking AlphaIn the remainder of this article, I will detail my concerns, and they fall into the following 3 buckets:On the technical front, the stock is very overbought, and the current rally is not supported by large volumes.A large reason for the recent rally is catalyzed by Ford (F) and General Motors’ (GM) announcement surrounding the supercharging stations, in my mind. And I will argue why the market reaction is overly optimistic. Finally, its insider trading activities have been dominated by selling recently. And I will explain why I interpret these activities as a sign for ordinary investors to stop adding/buying TSLA shares too.Technical signsOn the technical front, there are a few signs that the stock price has reached a near-term peak. Tesla still faces a number of challenges, including the need to continue to improve its vehicles and manufacturing processes, and the need to compete with other automakers that are also investing heavily in EVs.Even just on the charge station department itself, it is also worth noting that the announcement did not come with any specific details about how Tesla and GM/F would work together to make it happen. There will now be 20X more shares on the market, but the price per share be 1/20th of what it used to be.

This is not some once-in-a-lifetime bargain to jump on.

However, interesting things can and do happen around stock splits. So in today’s Market360, let’s look at whether this particular split is a buying opportunity.

Why Would GOOG Split?

This is the second time in six weeks that a $2,000 stock has split 20-to-1.

Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN) closed at $2,447 on Friday, June 3. On Monday, June 6, it opened $125.25 after the split. Perhaps not coincidentally, the stock hit its highest price that day since the end of April. As of this writing, it is down about 10% since then.

If it feels like you’ve been hearing a lot about stock splits, that’s not because the number of splits has gone up. It’s because big and well-known stocks are doing the splitting.

In the last two years, Amazon,Apple(NASDAQ:AAPL),NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), andTesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) have all split. Tesla has another one in the works — a proposed 3-for-1 split shareholders will vote on at the company’s annual meeting Aug. 4. And one of the crazy meme stocks,GameStop(NYSE:GME), will split 4-for-1 next Friday, July 22.

The main reason companies split is to make their shares cheaper. In Alphabet’s case, the 20-to-1 split is an instant 95% price cut. That makes the stock more affordable, especially to individual investors.

Honestly, now that investors can buy fractional shares, splitting changes things less than it used to. Still, the companies want to make their stock as accessible as possible to retail investors, and a lower price is the best way to do that.

Is the Split an Opportunity?

Stock splits do tend to attract investors. I closely monitor buying pressure in stocks as it is a sizable chunk of my quantitative analysis, so I do follow splits closely.

Stocks also usually get at least a minor bump. Over the last five years, stocks that split are up one year later 61% of the time, according to the folks at Bespoke. But the bottom line is less encouraging. Stocks that split outperformed the market less than half the time.

A split by itself is not an automatic buy signal. It is a minor factor when compared to a company’s fundamentals.

I have followed Alphabet for a long time. I still think of it as Google, even though it has been almost seven years since the name changed. As you may have seen,MarketWatchhas called me “the advisor who recommended Google before anyone else.”

I still like it all of these years later. It is one of the biggest business success stories of our time.

But that doesn’t mean I view the stock as a buy all of the time. In fact, right now I would consider it more of a hold.

While I think the split could bring in new investors — in fact, I think it could pop 8% on Monday — the biggest problem right now is earnings momentum. Earnings are expected to shrink nearly 3% in the current quarter and about 1% for the fiscal year. Alphabet fell short of expectations last quarter by 3.6%, which isn’t a huge miss, but any miss for the company has been rare in recent years.

So, should you run out and snap up shares of GOOG after the split?

Well, according to myPortfolio Grader, the answer is no — though that doesn’t mean it’s a sell either.

As you can see in the Report Card above, GOOG has been a “Hold” in my Portfolio Grader for about three months now. It holds a C-rating for its Fundamental Grade, which is not bad but reflective of the current earnings situation. Its Quantitative Rating is a bit higher at B, and that may hold up after the split if buying pressure builds.

My recommendation is to hang on to GOOG if you own it, but I would be hesitant to buy it now if you don’t. Alphabet is a great company in the midst of an earnings lull, not unlike a lot of other companies. When that tide starts to run, I would expect it to again be a buy at its post-split share price.

P.S.If you are looking for a stock to buy right now, I encourage you tocheck out my latest presentationwith the investor known as “The Prophet” — Whitney Tilson.

Together, we’ve recommended 37 different stocks for gains of 1,000+%. Alphabet fell short of expectations last quarter by 3.6%, which isn’t a huge miss, but any miss for the company has been rare in recent years. So, should you run out and snap up shares of GOOG after the split?Well, according to myPortfolio Grader, the answer is no — though that doesn’t mean it’s a sell either. When that tide starts to run, I would expect it to again be a buy at its post-split share price.P.S.If you are looking for a stock to buy right now, I encourage you tocheck out my latest presentationwith the investor known as “The Prophet” — Whitney Tilson.Together, we’ve recommended 37 different stocks for gains of 1,000+%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index has plunged 28% year to date, even after the largely positive week of trading on July 20-24.

This drop has brought shares of a few companies down to extremely appealing levels. Apple, Coupang, and Airbnb have all fallen to the point where shares are begging to be bought, and with these three stocks, investors should consider doing just that.

1. Apple

Apple might not excite many investors because of its $2.25 trillion market cap, especially considering its saturation in the smartphone space. Some estimates put Apple's Q1 2022 smartphone market share in North America at a staggering 51%, which leaves little room for growth.

However, Apple's potential isn't tapped out. Its wearables division has the opportunity to increase the value of its watches for consumers, which could dramatically boost demand and revenue. One way Apple is doing this is by integrating health features into the Watch. The tech titan already has heart rate, blood oxygen, and fall-detection monitors on its current Watches, but it could offer non-invasive blood glucose and sleep tracking features in the future.

Considering Apple's wearables division represented only 9% of total revenue in its second fiscal quarter, which ended March 26, 2022, there's a lot of room to grow this segment if these features can improve the value and demand for its wearables.

That alone could be appealing, but you're also buying one of the strongest businesses in history. The company generated $102 billion in net income and $106 billion in free cash flow over the trailing 12 months. This jaw-dropping profitability has fueled continued leadership in the smartphone and computer industries while funding its growth opportunities, and there's even enough left over for a dividend and stock repurchases.

At 22.5 times earnings, Apple is trading at its lowest valuation since early 2020. At this price, you might regret not buying this dominant behemoth.

2. Coupang

Coupang is the top dog in the South Korean e-commerce space, and with over 18.1 million active customers in Q1, roughly 35% of the South Korean population uses Coupang. This has led to great success for the e-commerce business: It generated over $5.1 billion in revenue in Q1.

However, shares have tumbled almost 75% since Coupang's IPO in early 2021, bringing its price-to-sales ratio down to a bargain 1.1. This stunning drop is likely because the company struggles with profitability and cash flow. In Q1, for example, Coupang posted a loss of $209.3 million and free cash flow burn of $294 million. This is caused partially by the low-margin business of first-party e-commerce sales. In Q1, the company's gross margin was a measly 20%, but it is improving steadily.

However, this selling might have been overdone. Coupang has almost $3.7 billion in cash on the balance sheet to fund these losses, and the e-commerce space in South Korea is still a large pond to fish in. Expectations put total e-commerce spending in the country in 2025 at $291 billion, leaving room for Coupang to flourish. At this multiple, the company could be an amazing investment if it can maintain its dominance as the space expands.

3. Airbnb

Like Coupang, Airbnb is trading at an intriguing multiple of just 22 times free cash flow. Traditional hospitality stocks like Marriott International and Hilton Worldwide comparatively trade above 32 times free cash flow.

One might expect Airbnb to be floundering given this cheap valuation, but its financial performance is near all-time highs. In Q1 2022, Airbnb reported a record 102 million nights and experiences booked, which soared 59% year over year. This bolstered the company's cash flows: In the same period, Airbnb generated $1.2 billion in free cash flow and lost only $19 million.

A potential culprit for shares falling more than 42% year to date is the fear of inflation and a possible recession impacting travel in the back half of 2022. According to a report from the U.S. Travel Association, 59% of Americans said that gas prices would impact their vacation plans, yet travel spending surpassed 2019 levels for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Therefore, while demand might drop slightly if gas prices continue to rise, travel spending will likely remain very high this summer.

As one of the leading platforms to book unique stays for your vacation, Airbnb is likely to capitalize on this. It also has more than 6 million active listings, so the chances that Airbnb will run low on supply are slim, too. With the stock trading so low today and the company having such a large opportunity ahead -- both over the short and long term -- it is worth buying shares for the long haul.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Market Plunge 2022: 3 Absolute Bargains Begging to Be Bought
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nMarket Plunge 2022: 3 Absolute Bargains Begging to Be Bought\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-06-27 11:53 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The stock market has gotten crushed in 2022.
