And market enthusiasts have been touting these products on social media as a tool to lock in gains amid Federal Reserve rate hikes that led to market declines in 2022.</p><p>Know what you’re getting into before you buy one. These volatile ETFs, particularly the ones with leverage, can quickly pile up huge losses in the wrong market.</p><p>Consider an aggressive inverse ETF such as the ProShares UltraPro Short QQQ (ticker: SQQQ), which offers three times the daily inverse of the Nasdaq and gained 82% last year when tech companies bled. The ETF also lost 61% in 2021 and 86% in 2020 as tech companies capped a long bull run. On a 10-year annualized basis, the ETF has lost 51% a year.</p><p>The risks aren’t scaring investors for now. Equity-based inverse and leveraged ETFs saw net flows of $27.37 billion in 2022, the highest level in the history of these products, according to Morningstar data. Net flow is the difference between cash into and out of a fund.</p><p>Last year 40 inverse and leveraged launched in the U.S. within the equity, debt, and commodity world, the highest level seen since 2011. At least four were launched this year with more to come.</p><p>There’s a “desire for an increased number of ways to participate in declines,” Ken South, registered financial advisor and CEO of Tower 68 told <i>Barron’s</i>. That has motivated the industry to create more of these ETFs, he added.</p><p>Employing these tools to hedge the shorter-term declines in the value of your investment can make sense in certain circumstances for experienced investors; South uses them occasionally in client portfolios. But high fees and expenses combined with inherent risks of ‘daily rebalancing’ associated with these so-called geared ETFs make them risky long-term—or even medium-term—bets for investors, who aren’t regularly tuning their portfolios and aren’t comfortable handling aggressive risks.</p><p>Consider one of many Direxion’s leveraged ETF lineups. The company explains its products by showcasing an enthusiastic trader on a roller coaster buying ETFs, but let’s crunch some numbers on Direxion Daily Energy Bull 2X Shares (ERX) as an example. If you own $100 worth of shares of this ETF and its underlying index Energy Select Sector Index (IXETR) loses 10% at the close of day one of trading, the ETF would be down 20% at $80.</p><p>But if the index on day two rises up 10% to close at 99, the ETF would be up by 20% of $80 or at $96. It would achieve its stated objective of two times daily returns on both days, but the leveraged ETF would lose 4% overall as opposed to the 1% loss in the index, making longer-period returns particularly volatile.</p><p>“This is really counterintuitive, and it’s hard to grasp,” Elisabeth Kashner, director of ETF research at FactSet said. “They require a lot of investment education [and] are hard to use over a multiday period,” she added.</p><p>Besides understanding the underlying risks and having a strong conviction on the direction of the index, investors must also note the high costs. Investors pay an average of 1.02% in fees and expenses for leveraged and inverse products, much more than the 0.61% on average charged by thematic ETFs and 0.095% on an SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY). Expense ratios eat into investor returns, and investors may want to use FINRA’s Fund Analyzer to estimate the impact of expenses on their investment.</p><p>Matthew Tuttle of Tuttle Capital Management, who last month filed for the Tuttle Capital 2X DBMF ETF, which tracks the daily performance of the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DBMF\">iMGP DBi Managed Futures Strategy ETF</a> (DBMF) sees the management fee of 0.85% charged by his fund as appropriate. That’s because it is offering two times the exposure for the same price charged by iMGP’s product, he said. Tuttle launched the Inverse Cramer ETF (SJIM) on Thursday, following the creation of the hugely popular AXS Short Innovation Daily ETF (SARK).</p><p>ProShares and Direxion, which dominate the inverse and leveraged ETF universe, state in their prospectus as well as on their website that the funds aren’t suitable for all investors and are not recommended for buy-and-hold investors. Both companies also have a tab dedicated to investor education.</p><p>Tuttle puts the onus on investors. “I am a HUGE believer that investors need to be educated about finances, whether they delegate or not,” he said in an email. “At the end of the day these are among many tools for investors to express their views…but more tools require more work on the investor’s part also.”</p><p>The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Feb. 23 sent out an investor alert on leveraged and inverse ETFs. “We believe individual investors may be confused about [their] performance objectives,” the release said.</p><p>Still, in a world where young investors are constantly looking for fast-paced ways to profit from market moves, some may find it hard to stop and educate themselves.</p><p>“They’re learning the hard way,” said Kashner. Higher interest rates mean future cash isn’t as valuable as it was when rates were lower.</p><p>The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite was down 0.9% on Monday. The index declined 3.9% on Friday, its worst day since June.</p><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AAPL\">Apple </a> was down 2% on Monday after tumbling 3.8% on Friday after Powell, in a short speech Friday at the Jackson Hole economic conference, said the Fed would remain aggressive in raising interest rates until it returns inflation to the central bank’s target of 2%.</p><p>Also pressuring Apple stock was a report from Politico that said Justice Department lawyers were in the early stages of drafting a potential antitrust complaint against the iPhone maker. A person with direct knowledge of the matter told Politico that the department’s antitrust division hopes to file a lawsuit by the end of the year.</p><p>Shares of <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GOOGL\">Alphabet </a>, the parent company of Google, were down 1% Monday after dropping 5.4% on Friday following Powell’s hawkish message.</p><p><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/969c206ad53e5dc436c63aa82513cdc4\" tg-width=\"459\" tg-height=\"470\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Meta Platforms (META), the Facebook parent, fell 1.13% Monday. The stock declined almost 4.2% on Friday.</p><p>The Wall Street Journal reported that Meta has agreed to settle a lawsuit that accused the social-media giant of allowing third parties, including Cambridge Analytica, to access private user data. During the Cambridge Analytica scandal, a British consulting firm was alleged to have collected data on up to 87 million Facebook users without their consent. (IBM) and Johnson &amp; Johnson (JNJ) provided disappointing guidance.</p><p>In economic news, the Commerce Department unexpectedly reported a continued decline in housing starts in June.</p><p>Crude oil futures ended sharply higher Tuesday amid signs of tighter supplies in the global oil market, while the dollar&#39;s continued weakness also contributed to the sharp rise in oil prices. There will now be 20X more shares on the market, but the price per share be 1/20th of what it used to be.</p><p>This is not some once-in-a-lifetime bargain to jump on.</p><p>However, interesting things can and do happen around stock splits. So in today’s <i>Market360</i>, let’s look at whether this particular split is a buying opportunity.</p><h2>Why Would GOOG Split?</h2><p>This is the second time in six weeks that a $2,000 stock has split 20-to-1.</p><p><b>Amazon</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AMZN</u></b>) closed at $2,447 on Friday, June 3. On Monday, June 6, it opened $125.25 after the split. Perhaps not coincidentally, the stock hit its highest price that day since the end of April. As of this writing, it is down about 10% since then.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c0f064946217768fa441a97fbd220a27\" tg-width=\"624\" tg-height=\"268\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>If it feels like you’ve been hearing a lot about stock splits, that’s not because the number of splits has gone up. It’s because big and well-known stocks are doing the splitting.</p><p>In the last two years, Amazon,<b>Apple</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AAPL</u></b>),<b>NVIDIA</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>NVDA</u></b>), and<b>Tesla</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>) have all split. Tesla has another one in the works — a proposed 3-for-1 split shareholders will vote on at the company’s annual meeting Aug. 4. And one of the crazy meme stocks,<b>GameStop</b>(NYSE:<b><u>GME</u></b>), will split 4-for-1 next Friday, July 22.</p><p>The main reason companies split is to make their shares cheaper. In Alphabet’s case, the 20-to-1 split is an instant 95% price cut. That makes the stock more affordable, especially to individual investors.</p><p>Honestly, now that investors can buy fractional shares, splitting changes things less than it used to. Still, the companies want to make their stock as accessible as possible to retail investors, and a lower price is the best way to do that.</p><h2>Is the Split an Opportunity?</h2><p>Stock splits do tend to attract investors. I closely monitor buying pressure in stocks as it is a sizable chunk of my quantitative analysis, so I do follow splits closely.</p><p>Stocks also usually get at least a minor bump. Over the last five years, stocks that split are up one year later 61% of the time, according to the folks at Bespoke. But the bottom line is less encouraging. Stocks that split outperformed the market less than half the time.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0e5cff440c13bdc1951ec77d5e65eddb\" tg-width=\"624\" tg-height=\"641\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>A split by itself is not an automatic buy signal. It is a minor factor when compared to a company’s fundamentals.</p><p>I have followed Alphabet for a long time. I still think of it as Google, even though it has been almost seven years since the name changed. As you may have seen,<i>MarketWatch</i>has called me “the advisor who recommended Google before anyone else.”</p><p>I still like it all of these years later. It is one of the biggest business success stories of our time.</p><p>But that doesn’t mean I view the stock as a buy all of the time. In fact, right now I would consider it more of a hold.</p><p>While I think the split could bring in new investors — in fact, I think it could pop 8% on Monday — the biggest problem right now is earnings momentum. Earnings are expected to shrink nearly 3% in the current quarter and about 1% for the fiscal year. Alphabet fell short of expectations last quarter by 3.6%, which isn’t a huge miss, but any miss for the company has been rare in recent years.</p><p>So, should you run out and snap up shares of GOOG after the split?</p><p>Well, according to myPortfolio Grader, the answer is no — though that doesn’t mean it’s a sell either.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3af42132465d8a0ad361ab68744dfc02\" tg-width=\"590\" tg-height=\"459\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>As you can see in the Report Card above, GOOG has been a “Hold” in my Portfolio Grader for about three months now. It holds a C-rating for its Fundamental Grade, which is not bad but reflective of the current earnings situation. Its Quantitative Rating is a bit higher at B, and that may hold up after the split if buying pressure builds.</p><p>My recommendation is to hang on to GOOG if you own it, but I would be hesitant to buy it now if you don’t. Alphabet is a great company in the midst of an earnings lull, not unlike a lot of other companies. And market enthusiasts have been touting these products on social media as a tool to lock in gains amid Federal Reserve rate hikes that led to market declines in 2022.</p><p>Know what you’re getting into before you buy one. These volatile ETFs, particularly the ones with leverage, can quickly pile up huge losses in the wrong market.</p><p>Consider an aggressive inverse ETF such as the ProShares UltraPro Short QQQ (ticker: SQQQ), which offers three times the daily inverse of the Nasdaq and gained 82% last year when tech companies bled. The ETF also lost 61% in 2021 and 86% in 2020 as tech companies capped a long bull run. On a 10-year annualized basis, the ETF has lost 51% a year.</p><p>The risks aren’t scaring investors for now. Equity-based inverse and leveraged ETFs saw net flows of $27.37 billion in 2022, the highest level in the history of these products, according to Morningstar data. Net flow is the difference between cash into and out of a fund.</p><p>Last year 40 inverse and leveraged launched in the U.S. within the equity, debt, and commodity world, the highest level seen since 2011. At least four were launched this year with more to come.</p><p>There’s a “desire for an increased number of ways to participate in declines,” Ken South, registered financial advisor and CEO of Tower 68 told <i>Barron’s</i>. That has motivated the industry to create more of these ETFs, he added.</p><p>Employing these tools to hedge the shorter-term declines in the value of your investment can make sense in certain circumstances for experienced investors; South uses them occasionally in client portfolios. But high fees and expenses combined with inherent risks of ‘daily rebalancing’ associated with these so-called geared ETFs make them risky long-term—or even medium-term—bets for investors, who aren’t regularly tuning their portfolios and aren’t comfortable handling aggressive risks.</p><p>Consider one of many Direxion’s leveraged ETF lineups. The company explains its products by showcasing an enthusiastic trader on a roller coaster buying ETFs, but let’s crunch some numbers on Direxion Daily Energy Bull 2X Shares (ERX) as an example. If you own $100 worth of shares of this ETF and its underlying index Energy Select Sector Index (IXETR) loses 10% at the close of day one of trading, the ETF would be down 20% at $80.</p><p>But if the index on day two rises up 10% to close at 99, the ETF would be up by 20% of $80 or at $96. It would achieve its stated objective of two times daily returns on both days, but the leveraged ETF would lose 4% overall as opposed to the 1% loss in the index, making longer-period returns particularly volatile.</p><p>“This is really counterintuitive, and it’s hard to grasp,” Elisabeth Kashner, director of ETF research at FactSet said. “They require a lot of investment education [and] are hard to use over a multiday period,” she added.</p><p>Besides understanding the underlying risks and having a strong conviction on the direction of the index, investors must also note the high costs. Investors pay an average of 1.02% in fees and expenses for leveraged and inverse products, much more than the 0.61% on average charged by thematic ETFs and 0.095% on an SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY). Expense ratios eat into investor returns, and investors may want to use FINRA’s Fund Analyzer to estimate the impact of expenses on their investment.</p><p>Matthew Tuttle of Tuttle Capital Management, who last month filed for the Tuttle Capital 2X DBMF ETF, which tracks the daily performance of the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DBMF\">iMGP DBi Managed Futures Strategy ETF</a> (DBMF) sees the management fee of 0.85% charged by his fund as appropriate. That’s because it is offering two times the exposure for the same price charged by iMGP’s product, he said. Tuttle launched the Inverse Cramer ETF (SJIM) on Thursday, following the creation of the hugely popular AXS Short Innovation Daily ETF (SARK).</p><p>ProShares and Direxion, which dominate the inverse and leveraged ETF universe, state in their prospectus as well as on their website that the funds aren’t suitable for all investors and are not recommended for buy-and-hold investors. Emboldened bears have returned, and the backdrop for risk assets is as treacherous as ever. While some Dow stocks are holding firm against the onslaught, many look terrible. Today I’m featuring three dangerous Dow stocks to sell now.</p><p>They all suffer from relative weakness and boast some of the worst price charts of all the giants that call the <b>Dow Jones Industrial Average</b> home. The thing with underperformance is it tends to feed on itself. Would-be buyers often steer clear in favor of stronger stocks that offer cleaner trends and easier upside. After analyzing the daily and weekly time frames, these were the three worst-lookers of the bunch.</p><p><b>Goldman Sachs (GS)</b><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b9186086a7a23dfa23d99846d261759\" tg-width=\"1856\" tg-height=\"855\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>Source: The thinkorswim® platform from TD Ameritrade</p><p><b>JPMorgan Chase</b>(NYSE:<b><u>JPM</u></b>) kicked off bank earnings with an underwhelming report on Thursday that had the banking giant off 5%. The negative commentary from CEO Jamie Dimon regarding the economy’s prospects didn’t help either. I think <b>Goldman Sachs</b>(NYSE:<b><u>GS</u></b>) could be next on the chopping block. Shares slipped alongside JPM stock but still have plenty of room to fall before giving back all of the post-pandemic gains.</p><p>The leading investment bank is scheduled to report earnings on Monday morning, but given the issues weighing on asset values, it’s unlikely GS will fare any better than its predecessor. Recessions aren’t known for their kindness to banks.</p><p>On the price front, GS is in a consistent daily downtrend below all moving averages. The weekly 200-day moving average beckons as the next stop at $265.</p><p><b>Caterpillar (CAT)</b><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e1a6df5e403b4dacd10e181912894b36\" tg-width=\"1855\" tg-height=\"853\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>Source: The thinkorswim® platform from TD Ameritrade</p><p>I can think of three reasons to abandon<b>Caterpillar</b>(NYSE:<b><u>CAT</u></b>). First, it’s one of the messiest movers in the Dow. The price chart is riddled with gaps and sharp moves in both directions, giving little edge to traders. Second, it’s suffered alongside the recent fallout in basic materials and commodities. Just over one month ago, it was nearing its 52-week high. Now, after falling virtually every day since, prices have cracked significant support, completed a topping pattern and notched a 52-week low. The turnaround has left heaps of resistance overhead to thwart future recovery attempts.</p><p>Third, the sudden shift away from commodities has taken and will continue to take a toll on cyclical stocks like Cat and <b>Deere</b>(NYSE:<b><u>DE</u></b>). Recessions are their kryptonite. While prices are extremely oversold in the short run, and a bounce could be in store, I suggest selling in the strength and revisiting CAT later when things have improved.</p><p><b>Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA)</b><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ff66a1d400bf78b8ba00f4bb7ba99f79\" tg-width=\"1856\" tg-height=\"856\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>Source: The thinkorswim® platform from TD Ameritrade</p><p>Today’s final contender for dangerous Dow stocks to sell is <b>Walgreens Boots Alliance</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>WBA</u></b>). Most large-cap stocks were flourishing before this year’s reversal of fortune. Walgreens wasn’t one of them. Over the past seven years, the wellness store has suffered in good times and bad. Shares peaked in 2015 at $97.30 and have since crumbled by 62%.</p><p>This year’s descent gives little hope for an end to the spiral. Distribution days litter the chart, and prices were torched following last month’s earnings announcement. The Straits Times Index now rests just above the 3,115-point plateau although it figures to open higher again on Wednesday.The global forecast for the Asian markets is upbeat on bargain hunting and optimism ahead of earnings season. The European and U.S. markets were sharply higher and the Asian bourses are tipped to open in a similar fashion.The STI finished slightly lower on Tuesday following mixed performances from the financials, properties and industrials.For the day, the index fell 3.97 points or 0.13 percent to finish at 3,117.79 after trading between 3,108.43 and 3,124.87. Volume was 735 million shares worth 757.8 million Singapore dollars. In this case, $113 = $2,260.</p><p>That’s impossible, of course. So what’s going on?</p><p>GOOG shares are splitting 20:1. After Friday’s close, every single GOOG share gets divided into 20 shares. There will now be 20X more shares on the market, but the price per share be 1/20th of what it used to be.</p><p>This is not some once-in-a-lifetime bargain to jump on.</p><p>However, interesting things can and do happen around stock splits. So in today’s <i>Market360</i>, let’s look at whether this particular split is a buying opportunity.</p><h2>Why Would GOOG Split?</h2><p>This is the second time in six weeks that a $2,000 stock has split 20-to-1.</p><p><b>Amazon</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AMZN</u></b>) closed at $2,447 on Friday, June 3. On Monday, June 6, it opened $125.25 after the split. Perhaps not coincidentally, the stock hit its highest price that day since the end of April. As of this writing, it is down about 10% since then.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c0f064946217768fa441a97fbd220a27\" tg-width=\"624\" tg-height=\"268\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>If it feels like you’ve been hearing a lot about stock splits, that’s not because the number of splits has gone up. It’s because big and well-known stocks are doing the splitting.</p><p>In the last two years, Amazon,<b>Apple</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AAPL</u></b>),<b>NVIDIA</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>NVDA</u></b>), and<b>Tesla</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>) have all split. Tesla has another one in the works — a proposed 3-for-1 split shareholders will vote on at the company’s annual meeting Aug. 4. And one of the crazy meme stocks,<b>GameStop</b>(NYSE:<b><u>GME</u></b>), will split 4-for-1 next Friday, July 22.</p><p>The main reason companies split is to make their shares cheaper. In Alphabet’s case, the 20-to-1 split is an instant 95% price cut. That makes the stock more affordable, especially to individual investors.</p><p>Honestly, now that investors can buy fractional shares, splitting changes things less than it used to. Still, the companies want to make their stock as accessible as possible to retail investors, and a lower price is the best way to do that.</p><h2>Is the Split an Opportunity?</h2><p>Stock splits do tend to attract investors. I closely monitor buying pressure in stocks as it is a sizable chunk of my quantitative analysis, so I do follow splits closely.</p><p>Stocks also usually get at least a minor bump. Over the last five years, stocks that split are up one year later 61% of the time, according to the folks at Bespoke. But the bottom line is less encouraging. Stocks that split outperformed the market less than half the time.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0e5cff440c13bdc1951ec77d5e65eddb\" tg-width=\"624\" tg-height=\"641\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>A split by itself is not an automatic buy signal. It is a minor factor when compared to a company’s fundamentals.</p><p>I have followed Alphabet for a long time. I still think of it as Google, even though it has been almost seven years since the name changed. As you may have seen,<i>MarketWatch</i>has called me “the advisor who recommended Google before anyone else.”</p><p>I still like it all of these years later. It is one of the biggest business success stories of our time.</p><p>But that doesn’t mean I view the stock as a buy all of the time. In fact, right now I would consider it more of a hold.</p><p>While I think the split could bring in new investors — in fact, I think it could pop 8% on Monday — the biggest problem right now is earnings momentum. Earnings are expected to shrink nearly 3% in the current quarter and about 1% for the fiscal year. Alphabet fell short of expectations last quarter by 3.6%, which isn’t a huge miss, but any miss for the company has been rare in recent years.</p><p>So, should you run out and snap up shares of GOOG after the split?</p><p>Well, according to myPortfolio Grader, the answer is no — though that doesn’t mean it’s a sell either.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3af42132465d8a0ad361ab68744dfc02\" tg-width=\"590\" tg-height=\"459\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>As you can see in the Report Card above, GOOG has been a “Hold” in my Portfolio Grader for about three months now. It holds a C-rating for its Fundamental Grade, which is not bad but reflective of the current earnings situation. Its Quantitative Rating is a bit higher at B, and that may hold up after the split if buying pressure builds.</p><p>My recommendation is to hang on to GOOG if you own it, but I would be hesitant to buy it now if you don’t. Alphabet is a great company in the midst of an earnings lull, not unlike a lot of other companies.
