However, even before Intel CFO David Zinsner highlighted in an early December conference that the company&#39;s &#34;visibility isn&#39;t pristine&#34; going into Q1&#39;23, we believe investors still on board should be keenly aware of its multi-year investment roadmap.</p><p>Hence, we don&#39;t think investors expect CEO Pat Gelsinger and his team to be posting solid H1&#39;23 results as macroeconomic concerns continue to beset its downstream customers. Also, despite its data center leadership, Intel is projected to lose more share against AMD (AMD) and Arm-based competitors moving forward.</p><p>Accordingly, DIGITIMES estimates suggest that cloud computing would likely continue to drive server demand in 2023, despite the downturn in consumer electronics.</p><p>It also expects Intel and AMD to benefit from replacement demand in 2023/24 as they push out their next-gen platforms. However, it also cautioned that Arm-based processors could continue to gain share against x86 moving ahead, with AMD continuing to take share within the x86 space. DIGITIMES accentuated:</p><blockquote>The US-based top-four cloud data center operators and Chinese first-tier data center operators have all adopted servers powered by AMD&#39;s EPYC CPUs in 2022. Since their procurement of AMD-based servers is expected to continue rising, the share of AMD-powered servers is estimated to grow to over 17% in 2023, while that of Intel-powered ones will slump to below 75%, down from around 77% in 2022. Servers equipped with Arm-based processors will see their share rise to slightly below 7% in 2022 and uplift to nearly 8% in 2023 with the keen development of Amazon, Nvidia, and Ampere. - <i>DIGITIMES</i></blockquote><h2>Can Intel Foundry Services Really Convince TSMC&#39;s Leading Customers?</h2><p>Hence, market strategists/investors/analysts are justifiably concerned whether Intel&#39;s bid to return to process leadership in the medium term could work out.</p><p>Furthermore, Intel&#39;s near-term growth drivers continue to face significant challenges, with inventory digestion in the consumer markets continuing to persist through H1&#39;23. Even though Intel maintains that it&#39;s on track to retake foundry leadership. However, the vital question is whether the market is convinced Intel is on track. Tom&#39;s Hardware highlighted:</p><blockquote>At the IEDM conference, Intel shared its process technology roadmap and its vision for chip designs that will be available in the next three to four years. As expected, Intel&#39;s next-generation fabrication processes - Intel 4 and Intel 3 - are on track to be used for high-volume manufacturing (HVM) in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Furthermore, the company&#39;s 20A and 18A production nodes will be ready for HVM in 2024, which means that 18A will be made available ahead of schedule, a slide published by IEEE Spectrum suggests. - <i>Tom&#39;s Hardware</i></blockquote><p>Hence, it&#39;s clear the company has staked the recovery of its market leadership through the success of Intel Foundry Services (IFS), as it competes with TSMC (TSM) and Samsung (OTCPK:SSNLF).</p><p>However, the recent resignation of IFS leader Randhir Thakur (slated to remain in Intel through Q1&#39;23) likely didn&#39;t inspire confidence as TSMC amped up its CapEx investments in Arizona. While TSMC&#39;s Arizona fabs are not intended to be the most advanced process technology when completed, the company remains well-placed to compete for manufacturing capacity with Intel.</p><p>Notably, with AMD, Nvidia (NVDA), and Apple (AAPL) signing up as TSMC&#39;s first customers in Arizona, Intel would likely to face serious competition as it looks to convince customers that it&#39;s ready to take on TSMC in the US.</p><p>And to make things even more challenging for Intel, Samsung also plans to overtake TSMC in 2024, as DIGITIMES reported that the Korean semi leader &#34;is preparing a &#39;master plan&#39; for its foundry business to turn the tables against TSMC in 2024, utilizing its 3nm process to take back orders from major US clients like Qualcomm and Nvidia.&#34;</p><p>Notably, the &#39;master plan&#39; encompasses activating its Taylor plant in the US, leveraging the technological reshoring priorities of its fabless customers and &#34;recreate the &#39;dual-track&#39; strategy from 8 years ago and lure main clients back to Samsung.&#34;</p><p>Therefore, we believe investors want to see more commitments from Intel&#39;s &#34;potential&#34; customers beyond MediaTek (OTCPK:MDTKF). But, these potential customers need to have high confidence that the company is on top of its IFS recovery and can deliver the performance and yields that TSMC is leading. As seen in Qualcomm&#39;s (QCOM) stumbles with Samsung, credibility once lost, is difficult to recover, as DIGITIMES reported:</p><blockquote>After suffering poor production yields for its 5nm chips, Samsung has continued to lose orders for 4nm chips due to the same problem. Nvidia, for instance, has returned to TSMC for fabricating its latest RTX 40 series GPUs, and Qualcomm has also decided to contract TSMC to manufacture its newest flagship mobile AP, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. - <i>DIGITIMES</i></blockquote><h2>INTC: Valuations Are Likely Not Aggressive</h2><p>But, has the market priced in these significant headwinds into INTC at the current levels?</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0fa53655089bfb39c5db0a87da9c3549\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"396\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Intel Forward EBITDA multiples valuation trend (S&amp;P Cap IQ)</span></p><p>With an NTM EBITDA multiple of 6.9x, it&#39;s in line with its 10Y average of 6.8x. However, investors need to note that the Street has already slashed its forward earnings projections, leading to the surge in its valuation multiples.</p><p>Hence, unless the company expects to lower its forward earnings estimates further, we believe significant pessimism has been reflected.</p><h2>Takeaway</h2><p>Therefore, the market should be focusing on Intel&#39;s execution through the cycle, with IFS&#39; ability to win more customers likely critical to a material re-rating.</p><p>Otherwise, investors should be ready for a long slog as INTC continues its consolidation.</p><p>With INTC down nearly 15% from its November highs, we assess it looks attractive again, even though investors should expect near-term volatility.</p><p><i>Maintain Buy.</i></p><p><i>This article is written by JR Research for reference only. They continue to fight for their slice of a semiconductor industry that could exceed $1.5 trillion in annual value over the next decade -- a big opportunity for investors.</p><p>However, the value of Nvidia and AMD shares have declined by 44% and 54% from their all-time highs, respectively, amid this year&#39;s economic downturn, paired with a series of industry-specific challenges like an oversupply of chips. But here&#39;s why those share price dips are worth buying.</p><h2>Nvidia&#39;s future might be in self-driving vehicle technologies</h2><p>Like most semiconductor companies, Nvidia is having a turbulent 2022. After the industry raced to fill pandemic-related supply shortages throughout 2020 and 2021, it ended up producing more than consumers needed, which led to a glut this year. That impacted prices, which meant less revenue, but companies like Nvidia were also met with a much weaker economy, where consumers were spending less money on expensive undertakings like upgrading their computers.</p><p>As a result, Nvidia&#39;s gaming segment has tumbled, with revenue dropping 51% year over year in the recent third quarter of fiscal 2023 (ended Oct. 30) alone. What was once the company&#39;s largest driver of revenue has now taken a back seat to the data center business, which continues to boom.</p><p>Nvidia is a pioneer of artificial intelligence (AI), which it&#39;s applying in the data center through its advanced hardware, allowing businesses to draw valuable insights from the mountains of information they generate every day.</p><p>Nvidia&#39;s data center segment generated $11.3 billion in revenue during the first nine months of fiscal 2023, which was a 55% jump compared to the year-ago period.</p><p>But there&#39;s another opportunity for Nvidia growing even more quickly, and that&#39;s the company&#39;s automotive segment. It&#39;s still tiny compared to the data center segment, with just $251 million in sales in Q3, but that was a whopping 86% year-over-year increase. Its end-to-end autonomous self-driving software and hardware solutions have amassed an $11 billion sales pipeline to dozens of the world&#39;s largest car manufacturers.</p><p>The upshot is that the autonomous self-driving vehicle industry could be worth over $2.1 trillion per year by 2030, which eclipses the semiconductor industry&#39;s projected value. Therefore, Nvidia is playing for not one, but at least two trillion-dollar long-term opportunities.</p><p>That&#39;s reason enough for investors to take advantage of the recent dip in Nvidia stock.</p><h2>Advanced Micro Devices is down, but certainly not out</h2><p>AMD has a much greater exposure to weak consumer spending than Nvidia does. Not only does it sell stand-alone semiconductors for personal computing, but it also supplies chips for incredibly popular consumer products like <b>Microsoft</b>&#39;s Xbox Series X and <b>Sony</b>&#39;s PlayStation 5. AMD chips also power the infotainment systems in <b>Tesla</b>&#39;s electric vehicles.</p><p>When demand for those products declines, so goes the demand for AMD&#39;s chips. In the recent third quarter (ended Sept. 30), the company saw a 40% year-over-year decline in its client segment, where some of the abovementioned hardware is reported. Game consoles fall under the gaming segment, which grew by a modest 14%.</p><p>But AMD is like Nvidia in one very positive way too, because growth in its data center segment continues to soar. It jumped 45% in Q3 to $1.6 billion. AMD is the choice of chipmaker for all the world&#39;s leading providers of cloud computing services, including Microsoft Azure, <b>Amazon</b> Web Services, and <b>Alphabet</b>&#39;s Google Cloud.</p><p>This is key, because more businesses are shifting their operations online, and the cloud is set to grow into a $1.5 trillion market by the end of the current decade (according to Grand View Research) as a result.</p><p>AMD&#39;s third quarter overall was one of its most challenging in recent memory, because it significantly missed its own revenue forecast by about $1.1 billion. But there might be a reprieve on the way, as inflation appears to have peaked back in June, which implies the worst of the U.S. Federal Reserve&#39;s interest rate increases might be behind us.</p><p>If that&#39;s the case, the consumer might be in a much better position in the new year, which could reignite AMD&#39;s lagging business units and supercharge its growth. Stripping out the contentious shelter component of the index, core prices fell 0.1 per cent on the month.</p><p>Using a three-month annualised rate to smooth out the month-to-month volatility, the core index, excluding shelter, suggests an underlying rate of core inflation of just 1 per cent – below the Federal Reserve’s target.</p><p>Consider the policy backdrop. The CPI carries a special measure of weight this month because it comes on the eve of the next Fed monetary policy decision.</p><p>The Fed’s rate-setting committee is still likely to raise interest rates by 50 basis points on Wednesday, but there can be little doubt that the numbers will embolden doves who think that the balance of risks is tipping towards recession over inflation.</p><p>There should be some meaningful debate among committee members about making the next rate increase the Fed’s last, and markets will be waiting with bated breath for signs of how receptive chairman Jerome Powell is to that argument.</p><h2>Soft landing hopes</h2><p>So, what does that mean for the medium term? For starters, it means price-earnings multiples can continue to drift higher.</p><p>Higher risk-free rates have been the dominant driver in the compression of forward P/E ratios since January, with multiples plummeting from about 21.6 times in January to a low of 15.2 times in September. At the current 17.8 times, they could track bond prices higher if inflation keeps moving in this direction.</p><p>Equally significant, the development bolsters the argument for a soft landing in the economy.</p><p>A sizable chorus of economists thinks a recession may already be baked in for 2023 thanks to the famous “long and variable lags” of monetary policy; the damage has already been done, many might say.</p><p>But a quick resolution to the inflation problem at least increases the odds of avoiding that outcome and opens the door to an upside surprise.</p><p>S&amp;P 500 strategists are already bracing for meagre 3 per cent earnings-per-share growth in 2023. A very modest uptick in EPS expectations (say, 5 per cent growth instead of 3 per cent), combined with a reasonable 19 times multiple, gets you back to about 4400 on the index, another 8 per cent upside from current levels.</p><p>As always, there’s risk in over extrapolating from what now stand as just two consecutive encouraging CPI reports.</p><p>Fed policymakers have been burnt by volatile inflation data already, and they’ve been conditioned to be more cautious.</p><p>“Nobody likes to get headfaked, and the way for Powell and his colleagues to get headfaked is to overreact to a couple of encouraging releases,” said David Wilcox, director of US economic research at Bloomberg Economics.</p><h2>Powell’s four pillars</h2><p>At his Brookings Institution speech last month, Powell laid out four pillars for thinking about the inflation outlook, implying that he won’t consider lower interest rates until he finds ample comfort in each of them. Here’s where the Powell framework stands after Tuesday’s report:</p><p>Growth running far enough below long-run trend to reduce inflation (check).</p><p>Clear signs of housing and rent disinflation, at least in forward-looking indicators of market rents (check).</p><p>Cooling core goods inflation and healing supply chains (emphatic check: core goods prices actually fell outright for the second consecutive month).</p><p>Cooling core services less shelter, and a more sustainable pace of wage growth (still not there: core services, excluding shelter, rose just 0.2 per cent in the most recent report, but data for the past three months suggest an annualised rate of about 6 per cent).</p><p>More to that final point, trend wage growth still looks to be about 5 per cent, a thorn in Powell’s side that he fears will make services inflation harder to tame in the medium term.</p><p>Clearly, the wage debate has its detractors, who note that the current bout of inflation didn’t start with the labour market and think that the relationship between tight labour markets and inflation is antiquated.</p><p>That could be, but the Fed is going to hold on to that line of thinking until the hard inflation data prove it unequivocally wrong.</p><p>Yet, while the Fed waits on clear and compelling evidence that inflation is back in its cage, market participants have no such luxury. Stripping out the contentious shelter component of the index, core prices fell 0.1 per cent on the month.Using a three-month annualised rate to smooth out the month-to-month volatility, the core index, excluding shelter, suggests an underlying rate of core inflation of just 1 per cent – below the Federal Reserve’s target.Consider the policy backdrop. The CPI carries a special measure of weight this month because it comes on the eve of the next Fed monetary policy decision.The Fed’s rate-setting committee is still likely to raise interest rates by 50 basis points on Wednesday, but there can be little doubt that the numbers will embolden doves who think that the balance of risks is tipping towards recession over inflation.There should be some meaningful debate among committee members about making the next rate increase the Fed’s last, and markets will be waiting with bated breath for signs of how receptive chairman Jerome Powell is to that argument.Soft landing hopesSo, what does that mean for the medium term? For starters, it means price-earnings multiples can continue to drift higher.Higher risk-free rates have been the dominant driver in the compression of forward P/E ratios since January, with multiples plummeting from about 21.6 times in January to a low of 15.2 times in September. At the current 17.8 times, they could track bond prices higher if inflation keeps moving in this direction.Equally significant, the development bolsters the argument for a soft landing in the economy.A sizable chorus of economists thinks a recession may already be baked in for 2023 thanks to the famous “long and variable lags” of monetary policy; the damage has already been done, many might say.But a quick resolution to the inflation problem at least increases the odds of avoiding that outcome and opens the door to an upside surprise.S&P 500 strategists are already bracing for meagre 3 per cent earnings-per-share growth in 2023. A very modest uptick in EPS expectations (say, 5 per cent growth instead of 3 per cent), combined with a reasonable 19 times multiple, gets you back to about 4400 on the index, another 8 per cent upside from current levels.As always, there’s risk in over extrapolating from what now stand as just two consecutive encouraging CPI reports.Fed policymakers have been burnt by volatile inflation data already, and they’ve been conditioned to be more cautious.“Nobody likes to get headfaked, and the way for Powell and his colleagues to get headfaked is to overreact to a couple of encouraging releases,” said David Wilcox, director of US economic research at Bloomberg Economics.Powell’s four pillarsAt his Brookings Institution speech last month, Powell laid out four pillars for thinking about the inflation outlook, implying that he won’t consider lower interest rates until he finds ample comfort in each of them. Here’s where the Powell framework stands after Tuesday’s report:Growth running far enough below long-run trend to reduce inflation (check).Clear signs of housing and rent disinflation, at least in forward-looking indicators of market rents (check).Cooling core goods inflation and healing supply chains (emphatic check: core goods prices actually fell outright for the second consecutive month).Cooling core services less shelter, and a more sustainable pace of wage growth (still not there: core services, excluding shelter, rose just 0.2 per cent in the most recent report, but data for the past three months suggest an annualised rate of about 6 per cent).More to that final point, trend wage growth still looks to be about 5 per cent, a thorn in Powell’s side that he fears will make services inflation harder to tame in the medium term.Clearly, the wage debate has its detractors, who note that the current bout of inflation didn’t start with the labour market and think that the relationship between tight labour markets and inflation is antiquated.That could be, but the Fed is going to hold on to that line of thinking until the hard inflation data prove it unequivocally wrong.Yet, while the Fed waits on clear and compelling evidence that inflation is back in its cage, market participants have no such luxury. A final rise takes the stock back up to the height of the first shoulder, only for another decline to bring the price below the “neckline” of the head.</p><p>Breaking $180 about a month ago was a signal to technical traders that more pain was coming for Tesla stock investors. The shares had some support around $166, but they’re now below that level. “The support zone between $120 and $155 from late 2020 [levels] looks next,” says CappThesis founder and technical stock market analyst Frank Cappelleri.</p><p>Katie Stockton, who founded of the technical-analysis shop Fairlead Strategies, believes that if Tesla stock closes below $166 for a couple of weeks, then $107 is in play.</p><p>John Roque of 22V Research has been the most bearish of those three, maintaining that the bottom for Tesla stock is closer to $100. “The trend overwhelms his tweeting, either way,” says Roque.</p><p>None of the three have fundamentally based target prices for Tesla stock. In 2021, when Carvana was seeing intense demand and growing rapidly, the company&#39;s gross margin was still just 15%.</p><p>Coinbase&#39;s market cap topped $70 billion in late 2021. As I pointed out earlier that year, Coinbase&#39;s success was extremely fragile. If cryptocurrency were to go mainstream and find real-world utility, it would kill the volatility that drives trading activity and revenue for Coinbase. If it remained a highly speculative asset class, competition would eat away at Coinbase&#39;s profit margins. And if cryptocurrency prices crashed and interest faded away, Coinbase would obviously suffer. There were no good outcomes.</p><p>For Carvana, the end of the used car boom apparently caught the company off guard. Retail unit sales tumbled in the third quarter, and more concerningly, gross profit per vehicle fell off a cliff. Carvana is overloaded with debt, and interest payments ate up nearly half of the company&#39;s depressed gross profit in the third quarter. Carvana is in more immediate danger -- its debt situation is untenable, and the company doesn&#39;t have the liquidity to keep going for much longer based on the rate at which it&#39;s burning cash. Carvana&#39;s free cash flow through the first nine months of 2022 was a loss of $1 billion, despite a reduction in vehicle inventories.</p><p>Coinbase has a longer runway, but its business model appears to be completely broken.
