Fool","summary":"Netflix will start a new chapter next month in its effort to reinvigorate subscription and revenue growth.","content":"

Netflix's diminishing subscriber count has led to sluggish revenue growth through the first half of 2022. That could all be about to change, though, as Netflix gears up to launch its ad-supported tier.

Advertising could be responsible for reaccelerating the company's revenue growth while enabling it to keep prices stable, reinvigorating subscriber growth as well. What's more, investors could see the benefits of advertising right away.

The massive potential for advertising on Netflix

Netflix is planning to launch the ad-supported tier on Nov. 1. The goal may be to beat rival Disney, which plans to launch an ad-supported version of Disney+ in December. Netflix, the streaming leader, came out of the gate asking for a lot. It's asking for higher ad prices than the Super Bowl, according to several reports.

Many buyers have balked at the high ad prices, but the fact Netflix thinks it can even ask for that much shows the power of its position. Few other platforms can offer the breadth of Netflix's audience on the most immersive screen in the home -- the living room television.

Netflix only plans to show about four minutes of advertisements per hour of programming. Disney is planning a similar ad load for Disney+, but it shows around six minutes of ads per hour on Hulu.

But what Netflix has that its rivals don't is an extremely high rate of engagement. Management said the average subscriber watched over two hours of programming on its service per day in 2019. That number may have changed over the last few years with shifts in viewing habits and increased competition, but estimates have remained high.

What's notable, though, is the average Netflix subscriber watches more Netflix than the average Hulu subscriber watches Hulu. Nielsen's The Gauge report consistently shows Netflix with more than twice the viewing time as Hulu despite only around 1.5 times as many domestic subscribers.

The combination of high ad prices and high engagement should lead to substantial ad revenue per user for Netflix. The company could ultimately generate $26 in ad revenue per subscriber per month, according to Atlantic Equities analyst Hamilton Faber. That number is more than triple the amount Disney generates from ads on Hulu.

The ad-supported tier could provide an immediate boost

Netflix expects to end 2022 with just 500,000 ad-supported subscribers. That's a tiny amount compared to the 220 million subscribers it had at the end of June. Still, the impact could be felt immediately.

Even if Faber's estimate turns out to be overly aggressive, the logic is strong. Higher ad prices and stronger engagement should produce better ad revenue per subscriber numbers than other streaming services. That should make the ad-supported tier more profitable than the ad-free tier.

So, when current subscribers move from ad-free to ad-supported, Netflix should see a bump in revenue per user. That could all be about to change, though, as Netflix gears up to launch its ad-supported tier.Advertising could be responsible for reaccelerating the company's revenue growth while enabling it to keep prices stable, reinvigorating subscriber growth as well. What's more, investors could see the benefits of advertising right away. The massive potential for advertising on NetflixNetflix is planning to launch the ad-supported tier on Nov. Few other platforms can offer the breadth of Netflix's audience on the most immersive screen in the home -- the living room television.Netflix only plans to show about four minutes of advertisements per hour of programming. The ad-supported tier could provide an immediate boostNetflix expects to end 2022 with just 500,000 ad-supported subscribers. That's a tiny amount compared to the 220 million subscribers it had at the end of June. Still, the impact could be felt immediately.Even if Faber's estimate turns out to be overly aggressive, the logic is strong. A recent survey from Samba TV found that 45% of current subscribers would consider switching to an ad-supported version of Netflix. That could ultimately mean Netflix sees a boost in its average revenue per membership without having to raise its prices again next year. While there are some additional costs to setting up the ad-supported tier, the boost in revenue ought to more than offset them. Netflix's demands for high ad prices and its strong engagement should fuel an immediate tailwind for its revenue and earnings.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":319,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9915652101,"gmtCreate":1665026347503,"gmtModify":1676537546687,"author":{"id":"4126600441940122","authorId":"4126600441940122","name":"BossApal","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/bca4d460c696986f5f2b0b13b777d8bb","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4126600441940122","authorIdStr":"4126600441940122"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"More made in China products. Twitter had more than 7,500 employees at the start of this year, according to a regulatory filing.

The email seen by The Wall Street Journal said employees would receive a message by 9 a.m. PT Friday about whether they were affected.

The staff reductions were intended “to place Twitter on a healthy path,” according to the company’s email. “We recognize that this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions to Twitter, but this action is unfortunately necessary to ensure the company’s success moving forward,” the company added.

The layoffs capa tumultuous period for Twitter staffthat began in April, when the company first disclosed Mr. Musk had become its largest individual shareholder. Mr. Musk then agreed to join Twitter’s board, before deciding not to. He launched a bid for the company that Twitter eventually accepted. Weeks later Mr. Musk raised questions about the deal, then tried to abandon it, before reversing course again last month and sayinghe would go ahead with the transaction. Along the way, he at times criticized the company and its executives.

The Thursday email said Twitter’s offices would be temporarily closed to ensure the safety of employees, the company’s systems, and customer data. Employees who were in an office or on their way to one were asked to go home, according to the email.

Twitter employees have been bracing for job cuts. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the companywas drafting plans for broad layoffs, with one investor saying up to 50% of staff could be cut and that employees would be evaluated to determine the scope of the firings.

On Wednesday, employees and people familiar with the situation were sharing estimates ranging from more than 2,000 to nearly 3,750 layoffs, the latter equating to about half of the number of employees Twitter had at the beginning of this year.

Mr. Musk has long expressedlittle appreciation for managerial roles, instead emphasizing the value of technical talent. He reiterated that view shortly after taking over Twitter, tweeting Sunday, “There seem to be 10 people ‘managing’ for every one person coding,” in response to a user who asked what he viewed as the company’s biggest problem.

In April, as Mr. Musk was moving to buy Twitter; entrepreneur Jason Calacanis, a close ally, suggested cutting the number of Twitter employees to roughly 3,000, according to messages between the two, which were released as part of litigation around the transaction.

A staff of 3,000 would represent the lowest level since 2013, the year Twitter went public, when the platform had about 2,700 employees and its revenue was roughly 13% of its level last year.

Twitter’s employee numbers began climbing in 2019, after ranging between approximately 3,000 and 4,000 for several years. Twitter has said that the increase in recent years was driven by investments in engineering, product, design and research.

Even before officially taking control at Twitter, Mr. Musk had indicated that he was concerned about the company’s expenses. Twitter has posted a loss in eight of its past 10 fiscal years, according to FactSet.

Mr. Muskmoved quickly to make personnel changes at the topof the company. Last week, on the same day he closed the deal, he fired Twitter Chief ExecutiveParag Agrawaland three other top executives. Mr. Musk fired the executives for cause and is saying he isn’t required to pay them multimillion-dollar severance packages, the Journal reported. Other executives have departed since.

Mr. Musk has leveraged other parts of his business empire to try to put his imprint on Twitter. Hebrought in some Tesla engineersto begin working on reshaping the social-media platform, the Journal reported. Also added to an internal company directory were some people who appeared to work for the Boring Co., a tunneling business Mr. Musk founded.

Broadly, the social media industry is struggling with weaker revenue from digital advertisers. Employees who were in an office or on their way to one were asked to go home, according to the email.Twitter employees have been bracing for job cuts. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the companywas drafting plans for broad layoffs, with one investor saying up to 50% of staff could be cut and that employees would be evaluated to determine the scope of the firings. On Wednesday, employees and people familiar with the situation were sharing estimates ranging from more than 2,000 to nearly 3,750 layoffs, the latter equating to about half of the number of employees Twitter had at the beginning of this year.Mr. Musk was moving to buy Twitter; entrepreneur Jason Calacanis, a close ally, suggested cutting the number of Twitter employees to roughly 3,000, according to messages between the two, which were released as part of litigation around the transaction.A staff of 3,000 would represent the lowest level since 2013, the year Twitter went public, when the platform had about 2,700 employees and its revenue was roughly 13% of its level last year.Twitter’s employee numbers began climbing in 2019, after ranging between approximately 3,000 and 4,000 for several years. Twitter has said that the increase in recent years was driven by investments in engineering, product, design and research.Even before officially taking control at Twitter, Mr. Musk had indicated that he was concerned about the company’s expenses. Twitter has posted a loss in eight of its past 10 fiscal years, according to FactSet.Mr. Other executives have departed since.Mr. Musk founded.Broadly, the social media industry is struggling with weaker revenue from digital advertisers. Such advertising has slowed due to several factors, including rising inflation, the war in Ukraine, andAppleprivacy changes that have made it harder to track the performance of ads. Twitter rivalSnapInc. this year saidit was letting 20% of staff go.Facebookparent Meta Platforms Inc. alsohas indicated it was trimming ranks.Tech companies beyond social-media also have embarked on belt tightening that is leading to job losses and hiring freezes. Users will need a PS5 console to use the VR headset.A spokesperson for Sony Interactive Entertainment declined to comment.“A key to success is the quality of the games Sony will be able to develop,” said Tokyo-based analyst Serkan Toto of Kantan Games. “The other critical point will be the price: spec-wise, the PSVR2 is a beast, and some users already expect it to cost as much as a PS5 itself.”Game developers remain skeptical about the VR segment because of its relative lack of market penetration, especially on Sony’s home turf of Japan. Meta’s Quest 2 is estimated by IDC to have shipped 17 million units to date and is lauded as the high water mark for the sector, but pales in comparison to other products in the console, mobile and PC gaming arenas. The economic slowdown and increased materials costs following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have also hit the VR sector. Meta raised the Quest 2’s price in August in response to the rising cost of production.“The increasing cost of living is making many consumers wary of spending on non-essential items,” said IDC vice president of data and analytics Francisco Jeronimo. “If the economic crisis deepens, Sony may need to cut production.”Sony’s suppliers and partners are uncertain about how long the Japanese company will maintain its high-paced production schedule after launch.Sony plans to boost the PSVR2’s launch with new titles designed for VR from its popular in-house franchises, such as Horizon, and has said there are more than 20 titles in development for the device from internal and third-party game developers.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":412,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9915790130,"gmtCreate":1665105400020,"gmtModify":1676537557935,"author":{"id":"4126600441940122","authorId":"4126600441940122","name":"BossApal","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/bca4d460c696986f5f2b0b13b777d8bb","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4126600441940122","authorIdStr":"4126600441940122"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Should also Improve content to sustain subscribers.","listText":"Should also Improve content to sustain subscribers.","text":"Should also Improve content to sustain subscribers.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9915790130","repostId":"2273050738","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2273050738","pubTimestamp":1665066353,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2273050738?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-10-06 22:25","market":"us","language":"en","title":"This Secret Weapon Is About to Supercharge Netflix's Revenue Growth","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2273050738","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"Netflix will start a new chapter next month in its effort to reinvigorate subscription and revenue growth.","content":"

That number may have changed over the last few years with shifts in viewing habits and increased competition, but estimates have remained high.

What's notable, though, is the average Netflix subscriber watches more Netflix than the average Hulu subscriber watches Hulu.
