And the chief executive of Nationa","content":"

The Optus hack is officially a nightmare for corporate Australia. And the chief executive of National Australia Bank, Ross McEwan, says the telco’s travails should galvanise every company in the country into action.

According to McEwan, cybersecurity is the one threat that “keeps chief executives up at night”. And given the flurry of breach disclosures since Optus revealed its troubles (Costa Group, Woolworths-MyDeal, Medibank) it has now become the risk de jour.

Cyber breaches are now the number one accident waiting to happen for businesses and the number of incidents that are hidden by underreporting would prompt any corporate leader to wake up in a cold sweat.

On any given month NAB has more than 50 million attacks on its digital channels, McEwan said on Tuesday. That equates to 600 million per year. And that is only one bank.

National Australia Bank chief executive Ross McEwanCredit:Louie Douvis

Customers don’t have visibility on these attacks, which for the most part are foiled by the bank’s security systems. But as we have learned from Optus’ recent experience, some are successful and can wreak havoc on a company and its customers.

The debate still rages between the government and Optus about the level of sophistication the hackers possessed. Either way the attack was dangerous.

If, as has been argued, the Optus hackers were a clutch of rank amateurs, it is terrifying to think Optus’ cyber armour was not sufficient to repel them.

If it was a professional hit, it’s arguably more of a problem because it makes protecting customers more difficult for any business.

Since Optus put cybercrime in the spotlight, others have come forward to report cyber breaches.

Woolworths subsidiary MyDeal.com.au was targeted in a string of cyberattacks across Australia last weekend. The Australian online retail marketplace said data was exposed when its customer relationship management system was accessed by a “compromised user credential”.

On Tuesday, online wine seller Vinomofo disclosed it had joined the victim list when it found a major data breach in which an intruder accessed customers’ personal information including names, dates of birth, addresses and contact details.

Neither hack was in the same league as Optus in terms of size or customer detail intimacy. And for hackers, infiltrating a large bank would be akin to hitting the jackpot.

McEwan says NAB and its New Zealand subsidiary, BNZ are protecting customers with new technologies such as biometrics and a team of experts that monitor customer accounts 24/7 to detect unusual account activity. The other banks have similarly robust systems in place.

That said, it isn’t a matter of if, but when.

Australian Prudential Regulation Authority chairman Wayne Byres.Credit:Alex Ellinghausen

The chairman of Australia’s Prudential Regulator, Wayne Byers told a parliamentary committee hearing last week a cyberattack on one of Australia’s financial institutions ‘will happen’ at some point in the future.

“ Financial institutions, at least in a broader context, are quite advanced (in cybersecurity) but what we also know is that, at some point, some sort of event will happen. It doesn’t matter what sort of defences you’ve put in place,” he said.

There is no end point. Instead, hackers and companies are locked into an arms race with both sides continuously sharpening their tools.

Just as the banks, and other organisations, spend billions to fortify their defences the cyber criminals continue to evolve and improve the sophistication of their attacks.

“For every attack or threat we stop, cyber criminals or countries behind them will launch another one using new and different methods,” McEwan said.

In 2021, the reported figure of money lost to scams and cyber fraud in Australia was $1.8 billion. McEwan said considering an estimated one third of victims do not report being scammed, the actual figure is likely to be much more than $2 billion and growing every year.

Underreporting by scammed customers is understandable given the humiliation of falling prey to thieves only one step more sophisticated than those posing as Nigerian princes. Of more concern is the reluctance of companies to admit their systems have been hacked.

A recent survey carried out by PwC suggests Australian executives fear reporting breaches of cybersecurity will be harmful to their business because it will negatively affect profitability and market share.

Such attitudes fly in the face of demands from governments and shareholders for greater transparency on security breaches. If McEwan is right about cyberattacks being the nightmare fuel for Australian businesses then CEOs will need to get used to coming clean when company defences are breached.

","source":"smh_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The threat keeping Australian CEOs up at night
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nThe threat keeping Australian CEOs up at night\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-10-18 14:00 GMT+8 The Sydney Morning Herald\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The Optus hack is officially a nightmare for corporate Australia. Either way the attack was dangerous. If, as has been argued, the Optus hackers were a clutch of rank amateurs, it is terrifying to think Optus’ cyber armour was not sufficient to repel them.If it was a professional hit, it’s arguably more of a problem because it makes protecting customers more difficult for any business.Since Optus put cybercrime in the spotlight, others have come forward to report cyber breaches.Woolworths subsidiary MyDeal.com.au was targeted in a string of cyberattacks across Australia last weekend. The Australian online retail marketplace said data was exposed when its customer relationship management system was accessed by a “compromised user credential”.On Tuesday, online wine seller Vinomofo disclosed it had joined the victim list when it found a major data breach in which an intruder accessed customers’ personal information including names, dates of birth, addresses and contact details.Neither hack was in the same league as Optus in terms of size or customer detail intimacy. And for hackers, infiltrating a large bank would be akin to hitting the jackpot.McEwan says NAB and its New Zealand subsidiary, BNZ are protecting customers with new technologies such as biometrics and a team of experts that monitor customer accounts 24/7 to detect unusual account activity. The other banks have similarly robust systems in place. That said, it isn’t a matter of if, but when.Australian Prudential Regulation Authority chairman Wayne Byres.Credit:Alex EllinghausenThe chairman of Australia’s Prudential Regulator, Wayne Byers told a parliamentary committee hearing last week a cyberattack on one of Australia’s financial institutions ‘will happen’ at some point in the future.“ Financial institutions, at least in a broader context, are quite advanced (in cybersecurity) but what we also know is that, at some point, some sort of event will happen. It doesn’t matter what sort of defences you’ve put in place,” he said. There is no end point. Instead, hackers and companies are locked into an arms race with both sides continuously sharpening their tools.Just as the banks, and other organisations, spend billions to fortify their defences the cyber criminals continue to evolve and improve the sophistication of their attacks.“For every attack or threat we stop, cyber criminals or countries behind them will launch another one using new and different methods,” McEwan said.In 2021, the reported figure of money lost to scams and cyber fraud in Australia was $1.8 billion. McEwan said considering an estimated one third of victims do not report being scammed, the actual figure is likely to be much more than $2 billion and growing every year.Underreporting by scammed customers is understandable given the humiliation of falling prey to thieves only one step more sophisticated than those posing as Nigerian princes. Of more concern is the reluctance of companies to admit their systems have been hacked.A recent survey carried out by PwC suggests Australian executives fear reporting breaches of cybersecurity will be harmful to their business because it will negatively affect profitability and market share.Such attitudes fly in the face of demands from governments and shareholders for greater transparency on security breaches. If McEwan is right about cyberattacks being the nightmare fuel for Australian businesses then CEOs will need to get used to coming clean when company defences are breached.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":423,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9917846271,"gmtCreate":1665486557493,"gmtModify":1676537614746,"author":{"id":"4127112811461482","authorId":"4127112811461482","name":"Noobs","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4127112811461482","authorIdStr":"4127112811461482"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$<v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v>","listText":"$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$<v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v>","text":"$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9917846271","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":168,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9914457644,"gmtCreate":1665360284788,"gmtModify":1676537590850,"author":{"id":"4127112811461482","authorId":"4127112811461482","name":"Noobs","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4127112811461482","authorIdStr":"4127112811461482"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$NVIDIA Corp(NVDA)$<v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v>","listText":"$NVIDIA Corp(NVDA)$<v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v>","text":"$NVIDIA Corp(NVDA)$","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9914457644","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":140,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9914959116,"gmtCreate":1665177385536,"gmtModify":1676537567023,"author":{"id":"4127112811461482","authorId":"4127112811461482","name":"Noobs","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4127112811461482","authorIdStr":"4127112811461482"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Pc market is quite dire right now","listText":"Pc market is quite dire right now","text":"Pc market is quite dire right now","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9914959116","repostId":"1177490519","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":302,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9914004451,"gmtCreate":1665120588174,"gmtModify":1676537561096,"author":{"id":"4127112811461482","authorId":"4127112811461482","name":"Noobs","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4127112811461482","authorIdStr":"4127112811461482"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$AMD(AMD)$<v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v>","listText":"$AMD(AMD)$<v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v>","text":"$AMD(AMD)$","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9914004451","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":181,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9915868261,"gmtCreate":1665013225453,"gmtModify":1676537542842,"author":{"id":"4127112811461482","authorId":"4127112811461482","name":"Noobs","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4127112811461482","authorIdStr":"4127112811461482"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Meaning that banking shares will keep going up","listText":"Meaning that banking shares will keep going up","text":"Meaning that banking shares will keep going up","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9915868261","repostId":"2273832829","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2273832829","pubTimestamp":1664949370,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2273832829?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-10-05 13:56","market":"sg","language":"en","title":"Which banks are passing on the interest rates to borrowers? Here's a breakdown of the the major banks are doing. ANZ BankMortgage rate: ANZ's variable home loan interest rates will increase 0.25 per cent per annum from Friday, October 14.Savings rates: ANZ will increase the interest rate on its Plus Save accounts 0.25 per cent from Wednesday, October 12, taking the new maximum rate to 3.25 per cent. However, the rate is unchanged for Progress Saver and Online Saver customers. Commonwealth BankMortgage rate: The standard variable CBA home loan interest rate will increase by 0.25 per cent per annum from Friday, October 14.Savings rates: CBA will increase rates on a series of savings accounts, including:Goal Saver: Will increase 0.3 per cent to a new maximum rate of 2.4 per cent from Friday, October 14Netbank Saver: The standard variable interest rate will increase 0.25 per cent to 1.10 per cent, with the five-month introductory variable rate to increase 0.70 per cent to 3 per cent from Friday, October 14Youth Saver: The bonus interest rate will increase 0.3 per cent to a maximum rate of 2.6 per cent from Friday, October 1412-month Term Deposit: Will increase 1.35 per cent to 3.35 per cent from Monday, October 1018-month Term Deposit special: Will increase to 3.70 per cent from Monday, October 10.Macquarie BankMortgage rate: Macquarie's variable home loan reference rates will increase 0.25 per cent per annum from Friday, October 14.Savings rates: Macquarie announced rate increases to a range of savings accounts, including:Savings account for new customers: Will increase 0.3 per cent to 4 per cent for the first four months on balances up to $250,000 from Friday, October 6Ongoing interest rate for savings and everyday transaction accounts: Will increase 0.45 per cent to 3.2 per cent on balances up to $250,000 from Friday, October 14.NABMortgage rate: NAB's standard variable home loan interest rate will increase 0.25 per cent per annum from Friday, October 14.Savings rates: NAB did not announce any increases to its savings or term deposit rates after Tuesday's RBA decision. In a media release, NAB said its savings and term deposit rates \"are continually under review\" and that it increased rates last month. Suncorp BankMortgage rate: Suncorp Bank will increase home loan variable rates 0.25 per cent per annum from Friday, October 14.Savings rates: Suncorp Bank did not announce any increases to its savings nor term deposit rates after Tuesday's RBA decision. In a media release, Suncorp said its rates \"are continually under review\". Westpac BankMortgage rate: Westpac Bank will increase its home loan variable rates 0.25 per cent per annum from Tuesday, October 18.Savings rates: Westpac announced increases to deposit account interest rates, including:Westpac Life total variable interest rate: Will increase 0.25 per cent to 2.6 per cent from Tuesday, October 18Westpac Life Spend&Save Headline Rate: Will increase 0.25 per cent to 3.75 per cent from Tuesday, October 18Westpac eSaver: The total variable interest rate for new customers will increase 0.25 per cent to 2.55 per cent from Tuesday, October 18.Will rates go up again? It's very likely. Here's what RBA Governor Phillip Lowe said after Tuesday's announcement:\"A further increase in inflation is expected over the months ahead, before inflation then declines back towards the 2 to 3 per cent range.\"The Bank's central forecast is for Consumer Price Index inflation to be around 7.75 per cent over 2022, a little above 4 per cent over 2023 and around 3 per cent over 2024.\"How much higher will rates go?The Commonwealth Bank's head of Australian economics Gareth Aird reckons rates will go up 0.25 percentage points in November and again in December, which would take the cash rate up to 3.1 per cent. Westpac is forecasting the cash rate will peak at 3.6 per cent by February — but that's the highest peak estimate of the major banks at the moment. How will this impact my mortgage repayments? RateCity says the average owner-occupier on a variable rate could be paying 6.36 per cent interest by early next year.A RateCity analysis shows the average borrower with a $500,000 mortgage could be paying an extra $687 per month since the rates started rising back in May. That's based on an owner-occupier paring principal and interest for 25 years left on their $500,000 mortgage. For people with a $750,000 mortgage, that increase from May to October is $1,030 and it jumps to $1,374 for people with a $1 million mortgage.
