ThesisTesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is a growth company. It actively exploits the power of it","content":"

Investment Thesis

Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is a growth company. It actively exploits the power of its brand name to pass increased costs onto the consumer. In 2022, Tesla is doubling down on expansion by boosting production of existing electric vehicle ("EV") models. Even as 2022 will be successful, it won’t reveal the company’s entire potential due to the lockdowns in China, which put the brakes on the plant in Shanghai.

However, Tesla is fully committed to the plan to launch Roadster, Semi and Cybertruck in 2023, and will release a new model, a robotaxi, in 2024, which will drive itself without human involvement.

Therefore, Tesla is a good investment for a long-term investor. The company not only develops cars that are sought after, but also builds infrastructure though its charging stations and solar panels for homes. Also, Tesla has plans to produce a robotic humanoid, the Optimus, to perform repetitive tasks at plants, but there has been no official announcement so far.

We are assigning a BUY rating to Tesla, Inc. shares.

Tesla has demonstrated strong financial results

Tesla generated $21.5 bn in revenue (+56% YoY) against our estimate of $21 bn. It was 7.5% above our expectations. The company sold 345,000 EVs compared to our estimate of 301,000 EVs. Its energy business also showed solid growth with revenue of 1.1 bn.

The company's EBITDA amounted to $4.64 bn (+68% YoY) against our estimate of $3.6 bn. The company successfully shifted costs to consumers, resulting in a 71% or 1p.p. QoQ decrease in gross costs. Tesla also reduced operating costs more sharply than we expected.

Tesla has quickly returned to peak capacity at its production facilities and is selling almost everything it manufactures. Also, in Q4 2022, Tesla is launching FSD Beta version, which means that new vehicles already purchased will have access to FSD if the feature is paid for.

Moreover, the company has made considerable progress with production expansion, especially after easing of lockdown policy in China. So far, Giga Berlin has already reached a pace of 2,000 electric cars per week, a milestone soon to be reached by Giga Austin and Giga Texas.

Tesla also managed to triple the amount of battery cells 4680 produced QoQ. The production volume is growing rapidly, and Tesla expects to start using them in its electric vehicles soon. Back in 2020, when the company announced creation of proprietary batteries, it was claimed to help reduce the cost of batteries by 50%, as it was the most expensive EV part.

The company also has hidden unrealized potential with Testa bot Optimus. If it succeeds, it will be first implemented at the company's own factories. It will transfer routine work from employees to robots and save additional money.

The EV market remains robust

The electric vehicle market continues to grow rapidly, primarily driven by China, which will sell 6 mln EVs in 2022, based on data available from January to October. The EV share in car sales will grow to 22.5% by the end of the year, adding 9.8 p.p. YoY.

In general, there is a strong shift of the automotive industry towards EVs, and the major players in the market have already announced plans to expand the model range and production capacity.

We expect the EV market to grow fast, with an industry average growth rate of 25% YoY till 2030. Such a rate will bring the EV share of all vehicle sales to 60% by 2030, compared to 12.4% in 2022.

We expect China to retain the leading position, but its market share will fall from the current 60% to 41% by 2030 due to higher current EV concentration in the industry and a faster growth rate of emerging economies around the world.

The EU holds third place in the internal combustion engine ("ICE") market, but will save the second place in terms of EV volume due to the high current share of EVs in total sales of vehicles (21%), greater population and government policy focus on green transition, shorter distances, and a stronger concentration of charging stations in comparison to the rest of the world. We expect EVs to account for 90% of all auto sales in the EU by 2030.

The U.S. market will continue to grow steadily due to Tesla's leadership and the activation of large local manufacturers such as GM and Ford. However, we expect a lower level of population engagement in the transition to green energy due to a strong lag in the growth of charging stations compared to the growth of electric vehicles, longer distances and a particularly high share of large diesel cars, whose transition to EVs will take place later than standard crossovers. We expect EVs to account for ~60 % of all sales in the U.S. market by 2030.

Invest Heroes

Tesla will continue active development

Tesla continues to increase production capacity and will expand existing plants and build new facilities in the years to come.

We expect Tesla to sell 1.87 mln EVs in 2023 and to increase EV sales up to 4.17 mln units by 2025. According to our estimate, Tesla's global market share will reach 12.8% in 2023 and surge to 16% by 2025 due to its fast capacity growth as compared to other manufacturers.

Invest Heroes

Tesla's 2023 EBITDA will amount to $31.55 bn and will increase to $109.3 bn by 2025 due to production capacity growth and lower average costs per EV owing to the cheaper cost of the batteries. Given Tesla's current price, forward EV/EBITDA 2023 multiples would be 24.3x, EV/EBITDA 2025 - 3.8x.

Invest Heroes

Valuation

We are evaluating Tesla's fair value price based on 2025 EV/EBITDA multiples and free cash flow ("FCF") Yield methods, and think the fair value price for the stock is $449 (average discounted prices). We are evaluating the fair value price of Tesla stock by discounting projected prices in 2025 at the rate of 13%. Fair value prices in the tables depicted below are without discounting at the rate of 13%. We are assigning a BUY rating to the shares.. The potential downside is 265%.

Invest Heroes

Risks

The main risk for Tesla is the uncertain situation with semiconductors. We do not bet that it will worsen, but it is quite possible that it will last for a long time, until 2024. Now Tesla does not produce so many cars to really feel the strong effect of the crisis, but with the increase in the volume of EVs produced, the situation for Tesla will become more difficult.

Another risk for the company is the uncertain situation around the autonomous driving system — FSD. If the system is approved and released on the roads without a pilot, then this will lead to the development of the Tesla robotaxi, which they want to release in 2024

Conclusion

Now Tesla looks like an attractive long-term investment. On the one hand, in 2023, China will largely ease the lockdown restrictions to keep its economy afloat. On the other hand, the sale of shares by Elon Musk to finance the Twitter deal has been completed.

Tesla also has a strong production pipeline and vertical integration through the development of solar power, charging stations and battery cells. Over the medium-term horizon, the launch of Tesla bot Optimus and the company's entry into the robotaxi market are expected.

Recession in the U.S. market is the potential risk for 2023. It could reduce demand for electric vehicles due to falling real income, elevated debt burden, and high cost of EVs. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is a growth company. It actively exploits the power of its brand name to pass increased costs onto the consumer. In 2022, Tesla is doubling down on expansion by boosting production of existing electric vehicle (\"EV\") models. Also, Tesla has plans to produce a robotic humanoid, the Optimus, to perform repetitive tasks at plants, but there has been no official announcement so far.We are assigning a BUY rating to Tesla, Inc. shares.Tesla has demonstrated strong financial resultsTesla generated $21.5 bn in revenue (+56% YoY) against our estimate of $21 bn. It was 7.5% above our expectations. The company sold 345,000 EVs compared to our estimate of 301,000 EVs. Its energy business also showed solid growth with revenue of 1.1 bn.The company's EBITDA amounted to $4.64 bn (+68% YoY) against our estimate of $3.6 bn. The company successfully shifted costs to consumers, resulting in a 71% or 1p.p. QoQ decrease in gross costs. Tesla also reduced operating costs more sharply than we expected.Tesla has quickly returned to peak capacity at its production facilities and is selling almost everything it manufactures. Also, in Q4 2022, Tesla is launching FSD Beta version, which means that new vehicles already purchased will have access to FSD if the feature is paid for. Moreover, the company has made considerable progress with production expansion, especially after easing of lockdown policy in China. So far, Giga Berlin has already reached a pace of 2,000 electric cars per week, a milestone soon to be reached by Giga Austin and Giga Texas.Tesla also managed to triple the amount of battery cells 4680 produced QoQ. The EV market remains robustThe electric vehicle market continues to grow rapidly, primarily driven by China, which will sell 6 mln EVs in 2022, based on data available from January to October. The EV share in car sales will grow to 22.5% by the end of the year, adding 9.8 p.p. YoY.In general, there is a strong shift of the automotive industry towards EVs, and the major players in the market have already announced plans to expand the model range and production capacity. We expect the EV market to grow fast, with an industry average growth rate of 25% YoY till 2030. Such a rate will bring the EV share of all vehicle sales to 60% by 2030, compared to 12.4% in 2022.We expect China to retain the leading position, but its market share will fall from the current 60% to 41% by 2030 due to higher current EV concentration in the industry and a faster growth rate of emerging economies around the world. The EU holds third place in the internal combustion engine (\"ICE\") market, but will save the second place in terms of EV volume due to the high current share of EVs in total sales of vehicles (21%), greater population and government policy focus on green transition, shorter distances, and a stronger concentration of charging stations in comparison to the rest of the world. We expect EVs to account for 90% of all auto sales in the EU by 2030.The U.S. market will continue to grow steadily due to Tesla's leadership and the activation of large local manufacturers such as GM and Ford. However, we expect a lower level of population engagement in the transition to green energy due to a strong lag in the growth of charging stations compared to the growth of electric vehicles, longer distances and a particularly high share of large diesel cars, whose transition to EVs will take place later than standard crossovers. We expect EVs to account for ~60 % of all sales in the U.S. market by 2030.Invest HeroesTesla will continue active developmentTesla continues to increase production capacity and will expand existing plants and build new facilities in the years to come.We expect Tesla to sell 1.87 mln EVs in 2023 and to increase EV sales up to 4.17 mln units by 2025. According to our estimate, Tesla's global market share will reach 12.8% in 2023 and surge to 16% by 2025 due to its fast capacity growth as compared to other manufacturers.Invest HeroesTesla's 2023 EBITDA will amount to $31.55 bn and will increase to $109.3 bn by 2025 due to production capacity growth and lower average costs per EV owing to the cheaper cost of the batteries. Given Tesla's current price, forward EV/EBITDA 2023 multiples would be 24.3x, EV/EBITDA 2025 - 3.8x.Invest HeroesValuationWe are evaluating Tesla's fair value price based on 2025 EV/EBITDA multiples and free cash flow (\"FCF\") Yield methods, and think the fair value price for the stock is $449 (average discounted prices). We are evaluating the fair value price of Tesla stock by discounting projected prices in 2025 at the rate of 13%. Fair value prices in the tables depicted below are without discounting at the rate of 13%. We are assigning a BUY rating to the shares.. The potential downside is 265%.Invest HeroesRisksThe main risk for Tesla is the uncertain situation with semiconductors. We do not bet that it will worsen, but it is quite possible that it will last for a long time, until 2024. Now Tesla does not produce so many cars to really feel the strong effect of the crisis, but with the increase in the volume of EVs produced, the situation for Tesla will become more difficult.Another risk for the company is the uncertain situation around the autonomous driving system — FSD. If the system is approved and released on the roads without a pilot, then this will lead to the development of the Tesla robotaxi, which they want to release in 2024ConclusionNow Tesla looks like an attractive long-term investment. On the one hand, in 2023, China will largely ease the lockdown restrictions to keep its economy afloat. On the other hand, the sale of shares by Elon Musk to finance the Twitter deal has been completed.Tesla also has a strong production pipeline and vertical integration through the development of solar power, charging stations and battery cells. Over the medium-term horizon, the launch of Tesla bot Optimus and the company's entry into the robotaxi market are expected.Recession in the U.S. market is the potential risk for 2023. It could reduce demand for electric vehicles due to falling real income, elevated debt burden, and high cost of EVs. Another risk is the activation of large classic carmakers in the EV market, but it does not seem significant because Tesla has more experience in the EV development of electric cars in comparison with other manufacturers in the industry. We now see a good opportunity for a long-term investor to get a full equity stake of 5% per portfolio amid a large recent selloff and Tesla being oversold locally compared to the broad stock market.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":122,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9924148552,"gmtCreate":1672204909576,"gmtModify":1676538652395,"author":{"id":"4129953546453262","authorId":"4129953546453262","name":"Tonyaaa","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4129953546453262","authorIdStr":"4129953546453262"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Miser] ","listText":"[Miser] ","text":"[Miser]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9924148552","repostId":"1159115908","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1159115908","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1672198525,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1159115908?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-12-28 11:35","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Tesla Lures $2.8 Billion From Korean Day Traders Amid Stock Drop","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1159115908","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"Korea day traders net buyers of Tesla for third-straight monthTesla is still most popular foreign st","content":"

Korea day traders net buyers of Tesla for third-straight month

Tesla is still most popular foreign stock among Korean traders

South Korean retail investors have bought a net $2.8 billion worth of Tesla Inc. stock this year amid the electric-vehicle maker’s worst slump on record.

Day traders have added $160 million in Tesla shares this month through Dec. 27, on track for a third month of net purchases, according to data from Korea Securities Depository. That's Elon Musk's description of OpenAI's new prototype ChatGPT chatbot in a tweet over the weekend. He added, "We are not far from dangerously strong AI."

Whether or not you agree with Musk's fear about the threat presented by artificial intelligence, he's on the mark with his view about how good ChatGPT is. I've had multiple lengthy conversations with the new chatbot over the past few days. The discussions ranged from economic theory to how to address major global problems to what Ben Franklin would think about the modern world if he time-traveled to the present. I was impressed by ChatGPT's responses.

Because I write about investing, I couldn't help but bring the topic up with my AI pal. I thought I'd share some insights gathered from one of our conversations. Here are the three best high-yield dividend stocks to buy in December, according to OpenAI's amazing new chatbot.

1. Energy Transfer LP

ChatGPT's first recommendation was Energy Transfer LP. I should note, though, that the chatbot said that its list of recommendations wasn't sorted in any way (although they're in alphabetical order).

Energy Transfer LP ranks as one of the largest midstream energy companies in the world. The company exports nearly 20% of global natural gas liquids -- more than any other company (or any country, for that matter).

Why did ChatGPT like this stock? For one thing, it has a high-distribution yield that currently tops 8.5%. Energy Transfer has a solid history of paying distributions. The company is strong financially with a diversified portfolio of assets including pipelines, storage facilities, and terminals. The AI system also felt that Energy Transfer has a good management team with a track record of success.

2. Realty Income Corp.

Realty Income Corp. was the second high-yield dividend stock on ChatGPT's list. It's one of the five largest real estate investment trusts (REITs) in the U.S. Realty Income's tenants include dollar stores, convenience stores, grocery stores, restaurants, and more.

ChatGPT quickly pointed out that Realty Income has a high-dividend yield and a strong history of dividend growth. It's right on both points. The REIT's dividend yield currently stands above 4.7%. Realty Income is also a Dividend Aristocrat with 27 consecutive years of dividend increases.

Realty Income's dividend program wasn't the only plus for the stock in ChatGPT's view, though. The chatbot also liked the company's historical financial strength and diversified portfolio of properties.

3. Shell plc

Technically, ChatGPT recommended Royal Dutch Shell as its third pick. But the AI system's training data only went through in late 2021. Royal Dutch Shell changed its name to Shell plc in January 2022. The rationale for choosing this stock is still applicable, though.

Obviously, the chatbot thought highly of Shell's dividend. The company's dividend yield is nearly 3.5% today but was probably a little higher than that in ChatGPT's training data. The AI system also viewed Shell's strong financial position as a positive.

In addition, ChatGPT felt that Shell's global operations could "provide some diversification and resilience during uncertain economic times." The company does business in more than 70 countries worldwide.

Intelligent picks?

So how intelligent were the picks from OpenAI's new AI system? Overall, I think they were good.

Energy Transfer is arguably one of the best ultra-high-yield dividend stocks on the market right now. My colleague Matt Frankel wrote last month that if he could buy only one stock, it would be Realty Income. Shell has certainly been a huge winner this year and could go higher if global oil and gas supply is limited by the EU's introduction of a cap on Russian oil.

But ChatGPT wasn't perfect. For example, it noted Shell's "history of consistent dividend growth." The company's actual history of dividend growth isn't anything to crow about. Also, I suspect that the recommendations might have been different if the chatbot had access to current data.

I wouldn't rely on ChatGPT for investment advice. It wouldn't advise doing so either. The AI system emphasized that it's "important to thoroughly research and carefully evaluate any potential stock purchases." That's intelligent counsel for all investors.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Best High-Yield Dividend Stocks to Buy in December, According to OpenAI's Amazing New ChatBot
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Best High-Yield Dividend Stocks to Buy in December, According to OpenAI's Amazing New ChatBot\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-12-08 23:37 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\"Scary good.\" That's Elon Musk's description of OpenAI's new prototype ChatGPT chatbot in a tweet over the weekend. All three major U.S. stock indexes fell into respective bear markets, with peak-to-trough declines in excess of 20%. Meanwhile, the bond market is on pace for its worst year in history.

But you won't find any sulking from Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. The Oracle of Omaha understands that big declines in the broader market are a red-carpet opportunity to buy high-quality businesses at a discount. Buffett and his team have put tens of billions of dollars to work this year buying 19 separate stocks.

The $64,000 question is: What stock might be next on Warren Buffett's buy list?

Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. Image source: The Motley Fool.

With shares of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla roughly 70% below their all-time high set late last year, could it be the next Buffett buy?

Before answering that question, let's look at the four factors that could put Tesla on the Oracle of Omaha's radar.

Here's what could, in theory, put Tesla on Warren Buffett's radar in 2023

First, it's an industry leader -- and I'm not just talking about its market cap, which surpasses all other auto stocks. During the third quarter, Tesla accounted for a 65% share of EVs registered in the United States, according to S&P Global Mobility, a division of S&P Global. Buffett is a strong believer that industry leaders tend to keep winning as long as they have a sustainable moat.

Secondly, Tesla can sustain its industry-leading share by significantly boosting production to meet growing demand for EVs. Earlier this year, the Austin, Texas, and Berlin, Germany, gigafactories came online. Although supply chain issues could disrupt production in 2023, it's feasible we could see Tesla surpass 1.5 million EVs produced next year after pacing more than 1 million EV deliveries in 2022.

The third beacon for Warren Buffett and his investment team would be the company's income statements. Tesla has been profitable on the basis of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in each of the past three years. Over the trailing five quarters, GAAP net income has ranged from $1.62 billion to $3.32 billion. Even though regulatory credits are aiding Tesla's profits, these emission credits are no longer necessary to achieve profitability.

The fourth and final factor that could draw the Oracle of Omaha's attention is Tesla's balance sheet, which ended September with $21.1 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities. CEO Elon Musk has suggested that Tesla's board of directors would consider a share buyback once the U.S. and global economic outlook stabilizes a bit.

Is Tesla a Warren Buffett stock?

But are these four factors enough to coerce the Oracle of Omaha to put Berkshire Hathaway's money to work in Tesla? In my view, not a chance -- and there are two key reasons why.

1. Tesla lacks a true moat

To begin with, Tesla's competitive advantages aren't as rock-solid as its market share entails. The company's U.S. and global market share have been shrinking as global automakers aggressively spend on EV, autonomous vehicle (AV) research, and battery production.

In the U.S., General Motors-- a current Berkshire Hathaway holding -- and Ford Motor Company have earmarked $35 billion and $50 billion, respectively, for EV, AV, and battery research. The $64,000 question is: What stock might be next on Warren Buffett's buy list?Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. Here's what could, in theory, put Tesla on Warren Buffett's radar in 2023First, it's an industry leader -- and I'm not just talking about its market cap, which surpasses all other auto stocks. During the third quarter, Tesla accounted for a 65% share of EVs registered in the United States, according to S&P Global Mobility, a division of S&P Global. Buffett is a strong believer that industry leaders tend to keep winning as long as they have a sustainable moat.Secondly, Tesla can sustain its industry-leading share by significantly boosting production to meet growing demand for EVs. Earlier this year, the Austin, Texas, and Berlin, Germany, gigafactories came online. Although supply chain issues could disrupt production in 2023, it's feasible we could see Tesla surpass 1.5 million EVs produced next year after pacing more than 1 million EV deliveries in 2022.The third beacon for Warren Buffett and his investment team would be the company's income statements. CEO Elon Musk has suggested that Tesla's board of directors would consider a share buyback once the U.S. and global economic outlook stabilizes a bit.Is Tesla a Warren Buffett stock? But are these four factors enough to coerce the Oracle of Omaha to put Berkshire Hathaway's money to work in Tesla? In my view, not a chance -- and there are two key reasons why.1. Tesla lacks a true moatTo begin with, Tesla's competitive advantages aren't as rock-solid as its market share entails. By the end of 2025, GM and Ford are each expected to have unveiled 30 new EV models worldwide. To add to this point, even though Tesla is the most popular EV sold in North America, it lacks the brand history and awareness that stalwarts like General Motors and Ford bring to the table. Building vehicles for American workers for more than a century is an intangible advantage that market cap simply doesn't trounce.Furthermore, Tesla's competitive edges are already being toppled by newer entrants in the EV space. For instance, China-based Nio brought two sedans (the ET7 and ET5) to market this year that offer 621 miles of range with the top-tier battery pack upgrade. That literally and metaphorically runs circles around the range offered by Tesla's flagship Model 3 sedan.Without a clear-cut moat, Tesla wouldn't make the grade with Warren Buffett and his investment team.Production of the Tesla Cybertruck has been delayed. Image source: Tesla.2. Elon Musk doesn't evoke trust from shareholdersThe other reason I believe there's absolutely no chance the Oracle of Omaha or his investing lieutenants (Todd Combs and Ted Weschler) would purchase shares of Tesla in 2023 is CEO Elon Musk. For Buffett, strong management teams are a luxury, not a necessity, as long as the business he's investing in is sound. However, if that management team threatens consumer and shareholder trust or could adversely impact its operating performance, it's a big red flag.Over the past few years, it's become readily apparent that Musk is a legal, financial, and operating liability for Tesla. Yes, he's an innovator who has helped build Tesla from an upstart into the world's most valuable auto company.
