Wouldn’t it be great if stocks did what you thought they would do when you bought them? But that’s part of the game you play when you invest in the stock market.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">We can use tools, metrics and my Portfolio Grader to identify stocks with the best chance of success. But sometimes stocks just underperform for whatever reason.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">That’s the basis of this grouping of stocks to sell now. Some of these were hot names just a few months ago. Many of them are in the electric vehicle space and seemed to be destined for greatness. But sadly, these are now stocks to dump for 2023 because they just underperformed expectations.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Just remember nothing is a sure thing regarding the stock market. There’s always an element of risk, even when considering some names you thought would be sure-fire winners. Let’s look at what happened to this list of underperforming stocks to sell.</p><h2 style=\"text-align: start;\">Nio (NIO)</h2><p>Remember the Chinese electric car marker <strong>Nio</strong> (NYSE:<strong><u>NIO</u></strong>)? This company was a legitimate challenger to <strong>Tesla</strong> (NASDAQ:<strong><u>TSLA</u></strong>) because of its unique position in the Chinese market coupled with its battery-swapping technology. </p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The battery-as-a-service (BaaS) strategy lets owners pull into a station and swap out a depleted battery for a fully charged one in less than five minutes.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Nio was so highly thought of that the stock price jumped by 3,000% in the last nine months of 2020. But since then, Nio lost more than 80% of its value to fall below $10 per share, roughly where it was in mid-2020.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Nio’s trying to turn the corner. It’s expanding in China and internationally, and its goal is to have 2,300 battery-swapping stations up and running by the end of the year. </p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">It’s also dipping its toes into other ventures, such as a five-year partnership with <strong>Wencan Group</strong>, a supplier of one-piece die-casting parts, and a collaboration with energy technology company <strong>Tibber</strong>, which provides an energy usage tracking app.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">But all in all, Nio’s been an enormous disappointment. It has a “D” rating in the Portfolio Grader.</p><h2 style=\"text-align: start;\">Silvergate Capital (SI)</h2><p>When you think about underperforming stocks to get rid of, one of the first names that should cross your mind is <strong>Silvergate Capital</strong> (NYSE:<strong><u>SI</u></strong>). The crypto bank looks to be seeing its final days, as it announced in March that it’s shutting down operations and liquidating.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">While it’s at least a relief that Silvergate can refund all of its depositors, it’s never good news when a bank fails, even when it’s a crypto bank. But cryptocurrencies are more volatile and riskier than traditional banks, so let this be a lesson to would-be investors of similar ventures.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Also, here’s a word of caution. There’s already been some talk of speculators trying to take advantage of a short squeeze and run of the stock price. Save yourself the trouble and avoid the temptation.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">SI stock has a well-deserved “F” rating in the Portfolio Grader.</p><h2 style=\"text-align: start;\">Rivian Automotive (RIVN)</h2><p>Another electric vehicle company that looked to go head-to-head with Tesla, <strong>Rivian Automotive</strong> (NASDAQ:<strong><u>RIVN</u></strong>) is headed in the wrong direction. The stock price is down 66% in the last year and 30% in 2023.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Part of the problem is what UBS analyst Patrick Hummel calls an automotive glut that threatens automakers in the U.S. Automakers are increasing production but demand for vehicles is decidedly cooler. </p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">It will stay that way as interest rates are elevated and people are less inclined to finance a new purchase.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Rivian also struggles to get vehicles off the production lines and out the door. The company is guiding to produce 50,000 vehicles this year, but the first quarter could only churn out 9,395. It needs to pick up the pace.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">And don’t forget that Rivian is still burning cash. It’s guiding for losses in 2023 to continue, similar to 2022 when Rivian lost $5.2 billion.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">RIVN stock has a “D” rating in the Portfolio Grader.</p><h2 style=\"text-align: start;\">Canopy Growth Corporation (CGC)</h2><p>Two years ago, <strong>Canopy Growth Corporation</strong> (NASDAQ: <strong><u>CGC</u></strong>) and other marijuana stocks were belles of the ball. </p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">There was widespread speculation that CGC stock would see a big payday as Democrats seized control of both houses of Congress and the White House. Federal legalization of marijuana seemed inevitable.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">But as we established, nothing is inevitable in investing.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Instead of marijuana laws, the White House has focused more on heading off inflation and infrastructure improvements. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine roiled the globe and had Congress dealing with sanctions against Moscow and relief packages for Kyiv.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Following the midterm elections, control of Congress is split, and there’s no appetite for taking up marijuana laws before the next presidential election. The window for Canopy Growth and other marijuana companies has closed, at least for now.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Canopy stock is down 75% in the last year and has a “D” rating in the Portfolio Grader.</p><h2 style=\"text-align: start;\">Tattooed Chef (TTCF)</h2><p>Another trend that seems to have peaked in the last couple of years is plant-based food. While there’s no denying the health benefits of such a diet, and plant-based foods went mainstream over the previous decade. Interest has waned.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">It’s fallen to where <strong>Tattooed Chef</strong> (NASDAQ: <strong><u>TTCF</u></strong>), which built its entire business model on creating products for a plant-based diet, has openly contemplated adding real meat to its offerings.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">I’m sure some are aghast at the idea such a decision would completely change the company’s foundation. But as a potential investor, I appreciate any company willing to explore all its options to bring returns to its customers.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Does that make TTCF stock a good investment now? Absolutely not. Don’t confuse sentiment for cold reality.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The reality for TTCF is that this is not a good time to invest. It’s underperforming, and there’s no sign that Tattooed Chef will turn things around.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">TTCF stock is down 83% over the last year, and in April received a non-compliance letter for failing to file its annual report for the 2022 fiscal year. That makes it one of the more dangerous underperforming stocks to hold. </p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The company’s most recent earnings report was for the third quarter of 2022, filed in mid-November. It showed the company posted revenue of $54.1 million and an earnings-per-share loss of 43 cents, much worse than analysts’ expectations for $72.8 million in revenue and an EPS loss of 19 cents.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">TTCF stock has an “F” rating in the Portfolio Grader.</p><h2 style=\"text-align: start;\">ChargePoint Holdings (CHPT)</h2><p>Here’s another company that probably baffled investors. <strong>ChargePoint Holdings</strong> (NYSE: <strong><u>CHPT</u></strong>) has a network of electric vehicle charging stations stretching across 14 countries. </p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">With EVs seemingly on the rise and efforts such as in the U.S. to build a network of EV charging stations to support the technology, investors probably thought CHPT stock would be a big winner. But that hasn’t happened.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">ChargePoint stock is down by 40% over the last year, making it one of the underperforming stocks to sell while you can. Just as troubling, Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Delaney said ChargePoint has a limited margin for improvement by competition and an industry mix toward DC fast charging stations. </p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Delaney has a $10 price target on CHPT stock, close to where it trades today.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">CHPT stock has a “C” rating in the Portfolio Grader.</p><h2 style=\"text-align: start;\">Fisker (FSR)</h2><p><strong>Fisker </strong>(NYSE: <strong><u>FSR</u></strong>) is another EV car company that was born hoping to take a bite out of the Tesla market share. Its vehicles are highly regarded. Wouldn’t it be great if stocks did what you thought they would do when you bought them? But that’s part of the game you play when you invest in the stock market.We can use tools, metrics and my Portfolio Grader to identify stocks with the best chance of success. But sometimes stocks just underperform for whatever reason.That’s the basis of this grouping of stocks to sell now. Some of these were hot names just a few months ago. Many of them are in the electric vehicle space and seemed to be destined for greatness. But sadly, these are now stocks to dump for 2023 because they just underperformed expectations.Just remember nothing is a sure thing regarding the stock market. There’s always an element of risk, even when considering some names you thought would be sure-fire winners. Let’s look at what happened to this list of underperforming stocks to sell.Nio (NIO)Remember the Chinese electric car marker Nio (NYSE:NIO)? This company was a legitimate challenger to Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) because of its unique position in the Chinese market coupled with its battery-swapping technology. The battery-as-a-service (BaaS) strategy lets owners pull into a station and swap out a depleted battery for a fully charged one in less than five minutes.Nio was so highly thought of that the stock price jumped by 3,000% in the last nine months of 2020. But since then, Nio lost more than 80% of its value to fall below $10 per share, roughly where it was in mid-2020.Nio’s trying to turn the corner. It’s expanding in China and internationally, and its goal is to have 2,300 battery-swapping stations up and running by the end of the year. It’s also dipping its toes into other ventures, such as a five-year partnership with Wencan Group, a supplier of one-piece die-casting parts, and a collaboration with energy technology company Tibber, which provides an energy usage tracking app.But all in all, Nio’s been an enormous disappointment. It has a “D” rating in the Portfolio Grader.Silvergate Capital (SI)When you think about underperforming stocks to get rid of, one of the first names that should cross your mind is Silvergate Capital (NYSE:SI). The crypto bank looks to be seeing its final days, as it announced in March that it’s shutting down operations and liquidating.While it’s at least a relief that Silvergate can refund all of its depositors, it’s never good news when a bank fails, even when it’s a crypto bank. But cryptocurrencies are more volatile and riskier than traditional banks, so let this be a lesson to would-be investors of similar ventures.Also, here’s a word of caution. There’s already been some talk of speculators trying to take advantage of a short squeeze and run of the stock price. Save yourself the trouble and avoid the temptation.SI stock has a well-deserved “F” rating in the Portfolio Grader.Rivian Automotive (RIVN)Another electric vehicle company that looked to go head-to-head with Tesla, Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN) is headed in the wrong direction. The stock price is down 66% in the last year and 30% in 2023.Part of the problem is what UBS analyst Patrick Hummel calls an automotive glut that threatens automakers in the U.S. Automakers are increasing production but demand for vehicles is decidedly cooler. It will stay that way as interest rates are elevated and people are less inclined to finance a new purchase.Rivian also struggles to get vehicles off the production lines and out the door. The company is guiding to produce 50,000 vehicles this year, but the first quarter could only churn out 9,395. It needs to pick up the pace.And don’t forget that Rivian is still burning cash. It’s guiding for losses in 2023 to continue, similar to 2022 when Rivian lost $5.2 billion.RIVN stock has a “D” rating in the Portfolio Grader.Canopy Growth Corporation (CGC)Two years ago, Canopy Growth Corporation (NASDAQ: CGC) and other marijuana stocks were belles of the ball. There was widespread speculation that CGC stock would see a big payday as Democrats seized control of both houses of Congress and the White House. Federal legalization of marijuana seemed inevitable.But as we established, nothing is inevitable in investing.Instead of marijuana laws, the White House has focused more on heading off inflation and infrastructure improvements. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine roiled the globe and had Congress dealing with sanctions against Moscow and relief packages for Kyiv.Following the midterm elections, control of Congress is split, and there’s no appetite for taking up marijuana laws before the next presidential election. The window for Canopy Growth and other marijuana companies has closed, at least for now.Canopy stock is down 75% in the last year and has a “D” rating in the Portfolio Grader.Tattooed Chef (TTCF)Another trend that seems to have peaked in the last couple of years is plant-based food. While there’s no denying the health benefits of such a diet, and plant-based foods went mainstream over the previous decade. Interest has waned.It’s fallen to where Tattooed Chef (NASDAQ: TTCF), which built its entire business model on creating products for a plant-based diet, has openly contemplated adding real meat to its offerings.I’m sure some are aghast at the idea such a decision would completely change the company’s foundation. But as a potential investor, I appreciate any company willing to explore all its options to bring returns to its customers.Does that make TTCF stock a good investment now? Absolutely not. Don’t confuse sentiment for cold reality.The reality for TTCF is that this is not a good time to invest. It’s underperforming, and there’s no sign that Tattooed Chef will turn things around.TTCF stock is down 83% over the last year, and in April received a non-compliance letter for failing to file its annual report for the 2022 fiscal year. That makes it one of the more dangerous underperforming stocks to hold. The company’s most recent earnings report was for the third quarter of 2022, filed in mid-November. It showed the company posted revenue of $54.1 million and an earnings-per-share loss of 43 cents, much worse than analysts’ expectations for $72.8 million in revenue and an EPS loss of 19 cents.TTCF stock has an “F” rating in the Portfolio Grader.ChargePoint Holdings (CHPT)Here’s another company that probably baffled investors. ChargePoint Holdings (NYSE: CHPT) has a network of electric vehicle charging stations stretching across 14 countries. With EVs seemingly on the rise and efforts such as in the U.S. to build a network of EV charging stations to support the technology, investors probably thought CHPT stock would be a big winner. But that hasn’t happened.ChargePoint stock is down by 40% over the last year, making it one of the underperforming stocks to sell while you can. Just as troubling, Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Delaney said ChargePoint has a limited margin for improvement by competition and an industry mix toward DC fast charging stations. Delaney has a $10 price target on CHPT stock, close to where it trades today.CHPT stock has a “C” rating in the Portfolio Grader.Fisker (FSR)Fisker (NYSE: FSR) is another EV car company that was born hoping to take a bite out of the Tesla market share. And for all of 2022 deliveries increased by 34% to 122,486.</p><p>Nio&#39;s revenue is also climbing quickly, with revenue up 32% to $1.8 billion in the third quarter. While Nio has already released its fourth-quarter delivery figures, it won&#39;t release its fourth-quarter financial results until next month.</p><p>Finally, Nio is benefiting from the fact that China is the world&#39;s largest automotive market, and EV adoption in the country is one of the highest globally.</p><p>In the first half of 2022, China accounted for 56% of global passenger EV sales -- up from 48% in 2021, according to Bloomberg research.</p><h2>What&#39;s going wrong for Nio</h2><p>Based on all of the above, it&#39;s not surprising that some investors have been bullish on Nio. But there are also some significant hurdles that the company faces that could slow down the company&#39;s growth story.</p><p>First, while Nio&#39;s deliveries have accelerated over the past few years, the company is facing a slowdown right now. Google commands roughly 92% of the worldwide search engine market, and its share hasn&#39;t wavered much in years. The company&#39;s near-monopoly in search underpins its digital advertising business -- another industry it dominates -- controlling 29% of global digital ad spending last year.</p><p>Google was quick to recognize the vast potential of YouTube&#39;s short-form videos, and its foresight has been amply rewarded. YouTube is the No. 1 video streaming platform worldwide, with about 2.6 billion viewers visiting the platform every month, according to Global Media Insight. Alphabet is always on the hunt for ways to boost that revenue, so YouTube should continue to be a long-term winner.</p><p>Then there&#39;s Google Cloud, which is the third-largest cloud infrastructure provider, with 9% of the worldwide market according to Canalys. The digital transformation has only just begun to take shape, so Google is well positioned to expand its share in this lucrative market for many years to come.</p><p>Finally, at less than 4 times next year&#39;s sales, Alphabet stock hasn&#39;t been this cheap in nearly a decade.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TOST\">Toast</a></h2><p>The second jaw-dropping growth stock that should be at the top of every investor&#39;s holiday shopping list is <b>Toast</b>. While it isn&#39;t a household name like Alphabet, Toast is quickly becoming an indispensable technology provider to the restaurant industry. Most eateries suffer with a hodgepodge of hardware and software systems to take orders, process payments, schedule staff, process digital food orders and deliveries, and order inventory. Toast does all that and more, with a cloud-based, software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that consolidates these tasks in one place using a single, integrated system.</p><p>Restaurant owners and managers get improved efficiency and lower turnover. Customers get improved service, which results in increased sales and higher tips for employees -- which is truly a win-win-win.</p><p>In just 15 short months since its IPO, Toast has made a splash, moving quickly to consolidate a fragmented industry, yet still serves less than 9% of the roughly 860,000 restaurant locations in the U.S., providing a long runway for growth.</p><p>For the first nine months of 2022, Toast&#39;s revenue grew 65% year over year and is on track to surpass $1 billion in annual recurring revenue over the next few quarters. Management recently raised its outlook, noting it hadn&#39;t seen any pullback in demand. The company is also expected to reach profitability in 2023, well ahead of schedule.</p><p>Co-founders Stephen Fredette, Jonathan Grimm, and Aman Narang are all still at the helm, currently serving as president, chief technology officer, and chief operating officer, respectively -- and are heavily invested in Toast&#39;s success. The trio own 86 million shares of Toast stock (and 25% of the voting control), a combined stake valued at $1.54 billion. Investors should take heart that the founders have a vested interest in the company&#39;s success.</p><p>Finally, at just over 2 times next year&#39;s sales, Toast is selling for a song, particularly considering the significant opportunity that remains.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SE\">Sea Limited</a></h2><p>The third and final stunning growth stock for your stocking is <b>Sea Limited</b>. Despite mounting losses over the past couple of years, this was in service of expanding its ecosystem of three interconnected businesses with room to run over the long term.</p><p>Garena, the company&#39;s digital entertainment segment, is driven by its blockbuster mobile videogame <i>Free Fire</i>. While adoption of the game has slowed from its lockdown-induced growth spurt, it remains one of the most downloaded mobile games in the world, fueling Sea Limited&#39;s other business segments.</p><p>Shopee, the company&#39;s e-commerce segment, continues to generate enviable growth that is outpacing the industry, with third-quarter revenue of $1.9 billion, up 32%, or 39% in constant currency. This was driven by gross merchandise volume (GMV) of $19.1 billion, up 14%, but even that doesn&#39;t tell the whole story. Core marketplace revenue grew 54%, while value-added services increased 20%. This seems to dispel the rumor that e-commerce is dead.</p><p>Sea Limited&#39;s smallest, but perhaps most promising, segment is Sea Money, its fintech business. Revenue of $327 million grew 147% year over year, fueled by its mobile wallet and credit businesses.</p><p>Management has recently been laser-focused on profitability, making great strides, as evidenced by a 45% quarter-over-quarter improvement in adjusted EBITDA, excluding one-time charges.</p><p>This ecosystem of businesses should continue to grow for some time to come. The bond market has delivered its worst year on record, the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> produced its worst first-half return in 52 years, and the nation&#39;s central bank is aggressively raising interest rates as the stock market plunges. There simply haven&#39;t been many safe havens for investors.</p><p>Yet in spite of these challenges, most Wall Street analysts maintain an optimistic tone. The reason being that recessions and bear markets tend to be short-lived. With the major U.S. indexes eventually erasing corrections, crashes, and bear markets over time, it generally pays to be an optimist.</p><p>However, some analysts are taking optimism to an extreme. Based on the highest price targets issued by Wall Street, the following three supercharged growth stocks offer upside ranging between 393% and 1,153% in 2023.</p><h2>Plug Power: Implied upside of 393%</h2><p>The first fast-paced company with serious upside is hydrogen fuel-cell solution provider <b>Plug Power</b>. According to analyst Amit Dayal of H.C. Wainwright, Plug Power can reach $78. For those of you keeping score at home, this would work out to a near-quintupling in the company&#39;s share price in 2023.</p><p>Dayal&#39;s optimism stems from a number of catalysts. First and foremost is the ongoing shift by most developed countries toward a renewable-energy-driven future. Plug expects to play a key role in supplying fuel cells for vehicles and industrial equipment (e.g., forklifts), as well as building the infrastructure needed to support fuel cell vehicle refueling.</p><p>Additionally, Dayal is excited about management&#39;s efforts to improve operating margin while continuing to rapidly growing sales. Earlier this year, Dayal cited the opening of the company&#39;s fuel cell gigafactory in New York (this occurred in mid-November) and the rollout of next-generation GenDrive units, which are less costly to service, as reasons the company&#39;s margin can improve.</p><p>But the biggest catalyst of all might just be Plug Power&#39;s ability to forge partnerships and joint ventures. It landed an equity investment from SK Group in early 2021 and is working with <b>Renault</b> via a joint venture to go after a significant portion of Europe&#39;s light commercial vehicle market. These partnerships should help lift Plug from just over $500 million in sales in 2021 to a company-forecast $3 billion in revenue by 2025.</p><p>However -- and this is the <i>big</i> &#34;however&#34; -- Plug Power isn&#39;t profitable, and the growing likelihood of a U.S. recession, coupled with high inflation in most developed countries, could coerce businesses and governments to postpone their green-energy transition/spending to a later date.</p><p>With Plug Power already valued at north of $9 billion, a lot of its future sales growth appears to be baked in. Until the company can plant its proverbial feet in the ground and deliver on the bottom line, a $78 price target will be hard to justify.</p><h2>Bionano Genomics: Implied upside of 474%</h2><p>A second supercharged growth stock with monumental upside, at least according to one Wall Street analyst, is small-cap genome analysis company <b>Bionano Genomics</b>. If <b>Oppenheimer</b> analyst Francois Brisebois is correct, Bionano shares will hit $12 in 2023, which would represent an upside of a cool 474%.</p><p>Although Brisebois is the current analyst covering Bionano for Oppenheimer, it was his predecessor, Kevin DeGeeter, who primarily laid out the case for Bionano Genomics running to $12. In DeGeeter&#39;s view, Bionano&#39;s optical genome mapping (OGM) system, known as Saphyr, has demonstrated that it&#39;s faster, less expensive, and in many ways more effective at identifying structural genome variations than other OGM systems.</p><p>One thing investors don&#39;t have to worry about with Bionano Genomics is a lack of data demonstrating Saphyr&#39;s efficacy. Over the past two years, the company has released numerous studies and data points extolling Saphyr&#39;s ability to recognize structural variations in everything from various types of cancer to genetic disorders and recurrent pregnancy loss. In theory, Saphyr can play a key role in helping researchers and drug developers fight hard-to-treat diseases.</p><p>Another positive for Bionano Genomics is its healthy cash position. After its share price went parabolic to begin 2021, management wisely chose to issue stock to raise plenty of capital. The company ended September with approximately $180 million in cash, cash equivalents, and available-for-sale securities.  That&#39;s more than enough to offset quarterly losses as the company continues to innovate and look for ways to expand Saphyr&#39;s utility.</p><p>So, why is Bionano Genomics at $2.09 per share and not $12? The answer to that question largely has to do with Saphyr not being an approved diagnostic system by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Without this approval, Saphyr&#39;s utility is limited within the United States. It&#39;s not exactly clear if and when Saphyr might get the green light from the FDA, either.</p><p>Although Bionano&#39;s cash does provide a somewhat safe floor, the ceiling proposed by Brisebois and DeGeeter doesn&#39;t seem achievable without FDA support.</p><h2>Novavax: Implied upside of 1,153%</h2><p>The third supercharged growth stock with truly jaw-dropping upside potential, based on the price target of one analyst, is biotech stock <b>Novavax</b>. According to H.C. Wainwright analyst Vernon Bernardino, who last updated his firm&#39;s price target in March 2022, Novavax is poised to hit (drum roll) $207 per share. That represents a whopping 1,153% upside from where shares ended this past week.</p><p>Bernardino&#39;s price target, which sits as the high-water mark among covering analysts, was based on the idea that Novavax would receive authorization to sell its protein-based COVID-19 vaccine, NVX-CoV2373, worldwide. Whereas the <b>Moderna</b> and <b>Pfizer</b>/<b>BioNTech</b> vaccines rely on messenger-RNA (mRNA) technology, the Novavax vaccine is differentiated in that it relies on an older and more traditional application of introducing harmless pieces of spike protein to teach a person&#39;s immune system how to fight and/or prevent infection. The thinking here is that folks who were leery of getting an mRNA vaccine might be more willing to receive an initial series or booster shots from Novavax&#39;s protein-based COVID-19 vaccine.</p><p>Something else that&#39;s working in Novavax&#39;s favor is the efficacy of NVX-CoV2373. Only three COVID-19 vaccines have reached the highly coveted 90% vaccine efficacy (VE) level. Those being Moderna (94.1%), Pfizer/BioNTech (95%), and Novavax (90.4%) with its U.S./Mexico trial in 2021. Even though VE is just one measure of efficacy, it&#39;s a strong enough headline number to keep Novavax in the global rotation as a major initial series and booster vaccine player.</p><p>Similar to Bionano, Novavax is swimming with cash. The company ended the third quarter with $1.28 billion in cash and cash equivalents, which is more than enough to cover the future repayment of its convertible notes and fuel ongoing research.  In particular, Novavax could be one of the first drug developers to bring a combination vaccine targeting COVID-19 and influenza to market.</p><p>But even being a shareholder, I don&#39;t in any way foresee $207 as a viable price target for Novavax in 2023. With the company enduring numerous emergency-use filing delays and production snafus, it missed out on most of the low-hanging fruit in developed markets in 2022. Moving forward, it&#39;ll primarily be focusing its attention on recurring booster shots in developed countries and initial series vaccinations in emerging markets.</p><p>While I believe Novavax is an amazing value at its current share price, it could take a couple of quarters before Wall Street realizes that as well. There simply haven't been many safe havens for investors.Yet in spite of these challenges, most Wall Street analysts maintain an optimistic tone. The reason being that recessions and bear markets tend to be short-lived. With the major U.S. indexes eventually erasing corrections, crashes, and bear markets over time, it generally pays to be an optimist.However, some analysts are taking optimism to an extreme. Based on the highest price targets issued by Wall Street, the following three supercharged growth stocks offer upside ranging between 393% and 1,153% in 2023.Plug Power: Implied upside of 393%The first fast-paced company with serious upside is hydrogen fuel-cell solution provider Plug Power. According to analyst Amit Dayal of H.C. Wainwright, Plug Power can reach $78. For those of you keeping score at home, this would work out to a near-quintupling in the company's share price in 2023.Dayal's optimism stems from a number of catalysts. First and foremost is the ongoing shift by most developed countries toward a renewable-energy-driven future. Plug expects to play a key role in supplying fuel cells for vehicles and industrial equipment (e.g., forklifts), as well as building the infrastructure needed to support fuel cell vehicle refueling.Additionally, Dayal is excited about management's efforts to improve operating margin while continuing to rapidly growing sales. Earlier this year, Dayal cited the opening of the company's fuel cell gigafactory in New York (this occurred in mid-November) and the rollout of next-generation GenDrive units, which are less costly to service, as reasons the company's margin can improve.But the biggest catalyst of all might just be Plug Power's ability to forge partnerships and joint ventures. It landed an equity investment from SK Group in early 2021 and is working with Renault via a joint venture to go after a significant portion of Europe's light commercial vehicle market. These partnerships should help lift Plug from just over $500 million in sales in 2021 to a company-forecast $3 billion in revenue by 2025.However -- and this is the big \"however\" -- Plug Power isn't profitable, and the growing likelihood of a U.S. recession, coupled with high inflation in most developed countries, could coerce businesses and governments to postpone their green-energy transition/spending to a later date.With Plug Power already valued at north of $9 billion, a lot of its future sales growth appears to be baked in. Until the company can plant its proverbial feet in the ground and deliver on the bottom line, a $78 price target will be hard to justify.Bionano Genomics: Implied upside of 474%A second supercharged growth stock with monumental upside, at least according to one Wall Street analyst, is small-cap genome analysis company Bionano Genomics. If Oppenheimer analyst Francois Brisebois is correct, Bionano shares will hit $12 in 2023, which would represent an upside of a cool 474%.Although Brisebois is the current analyst covering Bionano for Oppenheimer, it was his predecessor, Kevin DeGeeter, who primarily laid out the case for Bionano Genomics running to $12. In DeGeeter's view, Bionano's optical genome mapping (OGM) system, known as Saphyr, has demonstrated that it's faster, less expensive, and in many ways more effective at identifying structural genome variations than other OGM systems.One thing investors don't have to worry about with Bionano Genomics is a lack of data demonstrating Saphyr's efficacy. Over the past two years, the company has released numerous studies and data points extolling Saphyr's ability to recognize structural variations in everything from various types of cancer to genetic disorders and recurrent pregnancy loss. In theory, Saphyr can play a key role in helping researchers and drug developers fight hard-to-treat diseases.Another positive for Bionano Genomics is its healthy cash position. After its share price went parabolic to begin 2021, management wisely chose to issue stock to raise plenty of capital. The company ended September with approximately $180 million in cash, cash equivalents, and available-for-sale securities.  That's more than enough to offset quarterly losses as the company continues to innovate and look for ways to expand Saphyr's utility.So, why is Bionano Genomics at $2.09 per share and not $12? The answer to that question largely has to do with Saphyr not being an approved diagnostic system by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Without this approval, Saphyr's utility is limited within the United States. It's not exactly clear if and when Saphyr might get the green light from the FDA, either.Although Bionano's cash does provide a somewhat safe floor, the ceiling proposed by Brisebois and DeGeeter doesn't seem achievable without FDA support.Novavax: Implied upside of 1,153%The third supercharged growth stock with truly jaw-dropping upside potential, based on the price target of one analyst, is biotech stock Novavax. According to H.C. Wainwright analyst Vernon Bernardino, who last updated his firm's price target in March 2022, Novavax is poised to hit (drum roll) $207 per share. That represents a whopping 1,153% upside from where shares ended this past week.Bernardino's price target, which sits as the high-water mark among covering analysts, was based on the idea that Novavax would receive authorization to sell its protein-based COVID-19 vaccine, NVX-CoV2373, worldwide. Whereas the Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines rely on messenger-RNA (mRNA) technology, the Novavax vaccine is differentiated in that it relies on an older and more traditional application of introducing harmless pieces of spike protein to teach a person's immune system how to fight and/or prevent infection. The thinking here is that folks who were leery of getting an mRNA vaccine might be more willing to receive an initial series or booster shots from Novavax's protein-based COVID-19 vaccine.Something else that's working in Novavax's favor is the efficacy of NVX-CoV2373. Only three COVID-19 vaccines have reached the highly coveted 90% vaccine efficacy (VE) level. Those being Moderna (94.1%), Pfizer/BioNTech (95%), and Novavax (90.4%) with its U.S./Mexico trial in 2021. Even though VE is just one measure of efficacy, it's a strong enough headline number to keep Novavax in the global rotation as a major initial series and booster vaccine player.Similar to Bionano, Novavax is swimming with cash. The company ended the third quarter with $1.28 billion in cash and cash equivalents, which is more than enough to cover the future repayment of its convertible notes and fuel ongoing research.  In particular, Novavax could be one of the first drug developers to bring a combination vaccine targeting COVID-19 and influenza to market.But even being a shareholder, I don't in any way foresee $207 as a viable price target for Novavax in 2023. With the company enduring numerous emergency-use filing delays and production snafus, it missed out on most of the low-hanging fruit in developed markets in 2022. Moving forward, it'll primarily be focusing its attention on recurring booster shots in developed countries and initial series vaccinations in emerging markets.While I believe Novavax is an amazing value at its current share price, it could take a couple of quarters before Wall Street realizes that as well. This order, which is expected to be fulfilled by 2030, should provide Rivian with consistent operating cash flow throughout the decade, assuming it can ramp up production.</p><p>Rivian&#39;s R1T electric pickup is another reason optimists are excited about the company&#39;s prospects. Even though legacy automakers are taking orders for the electrified versions of their heavy-duty best-selling trucks, the R1T is effectively in a class of its own. It&#39;s fully capable of going off-road but is a luxury pickup. Sliding into the luxury niche should minimize competition, as long as Rivian doesn&#39;t price potential customers out of a purchase.</p><p>Assuming supply chain disruptions are minimized, Wall Street believes Rivian can triple its full-year sales in 2023.</p><p>But Rivian is anything but risk-free. It&#39;s losing a staggering amount of money on the EVs it&#39;s currently producing and is spending an aggregate of $5 billion to build a manufacturing plant in Georgia, which is slated to open sometime next year. The company&#39;s eyebrow-raising rate of cash burn -- cash and cash equivalents fell by $4.9 billion through the first nine months of 2022 -- leaves the door open for a potentially dilutive capital raise.</p><h2>Teladoc Health: 90% below its all-time high</h2><p>A second high-octane growth stock that&#39;s been absolutely clobbered but is, nevertheless, sought after by billionaire investors is <b>Teladoc Health</b>. In spite of a 90% decline from its record high set two years ago, billionaires Israel Englander of Millennium Management and Jeff Yass of Susquehanna International were big buyers during the fourth quarter. Englander&#39;s fund scooped up nearly 2.31 million shares, while Yass&#39;s fund added close to 280,000 shares.</p><p>One of the lures of healthcare stocks during a bear market is that the sector is highly defensive. It doesn&#39;t matter how high inflation goes or how poorly the U.S. economy performs; people will still need prescription drugs, medical devices, and an assortment of healthcare services in any economic environment.</p><p>The excitement surrounding Teladoc has to do with the company completely reshaping how personalized care is administered. In situations where a virtual visit makes sense, it&#39;s far more convenient for patients than trekking to a local doctor&#39;s office or hospital.</p><p>Likewise, telehealth allows physicians to keep better tabs on patients with chronic illnesses. The expectation is for telehealth services to improve patient outcomes and reduce out-of-pocket expenses for health insurers. Anything that reduces costs for insurers is something they&#39;re bound to promote.</p><p>However, the biggest near-term catalyst for Teladoc Health is simply putting a handful of goodwill impairment charges tied to its $18.5 billion acquisition of applied health signals company Livongo Health in the back seat. Investors should be asking different questions about the industry and how          Tesla can keep growing.</p><p>Friday afternoon, <i>The Wall Street Journal</i> hosted the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TSLA\">Tesla</a> event, with Kynikos Associates founder Jim Chanos, a bear, and Gerber Kawasaki Wealth &amp; Investment Management CEO Ross Gerber, a bull.</p><p>Chanos is short Tesla, and benefits from the stock going down, while Gerber owns the shares. Investors should realize both men were making the case that would benefit them financially.</p><p>To sum up the 45-minute event, Chanos believes Tesla is just a car company, and that its high margins will fall to industry averages over time. He didn’t address benefits to the company that come from its charging network, or the extra margin Tesla gains by functioning as its own dealership network.</p><p>Gerber counters that Tesla is more than a car company. He argues that margins can remain elevated as the company realizes benefits from increasing the scale of its car and battery manufacturing, as well as software-related sales and services. He believes Tesla is more like Apple (AAPL) than General Motors (GM).</p><p>That sums up a bull-bear debate that has been going on for a long time.</p><p>Beyond the basics, Chanos pointed out that Tesla inventories are increasing in the U.S. and overseas. But that is essentially old news and reflects what happened before Tesla cut vehicle prices around the globe.</p><p>Watching demand in 2023, of course, is critical for the stock this year. If Tesla doesn’t deliver more than 1.8 million units, roughly the current analyst consensus, the stock will struggle.</p><p>Chanos also believes Tesla should trade at a small premium to other auto makers which trade for single-digit price/earnings rations and about “three to five times gross profit.” <i>Barron’s</i> disagrees. Auto makers trade for below-average valuation multiples because the industry increases its sales and earnings at rates far lower than the rest of the market, but Tesla grows much faster.</p><p>Ford Motor (F), which <i>Barron’s</i> picked in a 2020 cover story, is expected to generate 2023 sales of about $159 billion, compared with about $160 billion in 2018. Tesla sales in 2023 are expected to be about $110 billion, up more than 30% compared with 2022. In 2018, Tesla generated closer to $20 billion in sales.</p><p>If Tesla’s growth stops, the valuation multiple, which is currently at about 27 times estimated 2023 earnings, will fall dramatically. Both men agreed that if Tesla earns $2 a share in 2023, the stock will struggle, but the current consensus estimates for 2022 and 2023 are about $4 and $4.80, respectively.</p><p>Gerber, for his part, said nothing would make him a Tesla bear. That’s a very strong stance. A piece of advice <i>Barron’s</i> has taken to heart is that investors should have “strong views held lightly.”</p><p>How to value growth companies like Tesla is important, but what really counts for the stock is how fast EVs’ share of new car sales will increase. Battery-electric vehicles represented a little less than 10% of all new car sales around the world in 2022. It&#39;s also been a provider of loans for SMBs, but this part of the business has struggled due to challenges related to the coronavirus pandemic and a reliance on data that proved to be insufficient for assessing whether businesses were creditworthy.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">StoneCo still carries roughly $79 million in bad debt in its loan portfolio, but the company still managed to grow sales by roughly 99% last year, and non-GAAP (adjusted) net income soared 520% in the period. The company provides digital banking services and also operates in Mexico and Columbia, and it&#39;s been growing at a rapid pace.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The company closed out last year with 74.6 million total customers, up 38.6% year over year, and sales and earnings have soared thanks to new customer additions and higher levels of engagement from those already using its services. Nu&#39;s sales surged 128% year over year in the fourth quarter, and net income surged to $113.8 million from $3.2 million in the prior-year period.  </p><p>Due to macroeconomic pressures, the company&#39;s share price trades down roughly 58.5% from its high, and investors have an opportunity to buy the stock at levels that leave room for big upside. Nu is on track to benefit from exploding demand for digital banking services in Latin America, and it could deliver market-crushing returns for long-term shareholders. </p><h2 style=\"text-align: start;\">5. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SNOW\">Snowflake</a></h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\"><strong>Snowflake</strong> <strong>(SNOW)</strong> is a leading provider of data warehousing and analytics tools.
