Much of this performance was driven by huge gains for the so-called &#34;Magnificent Seven&#34; stocks.</p><p>Could this momentum continue in a Kamala Harris administration? And, if so, what&#39;s the best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if Harris wins in November?</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/1290cd3328579120fc0158c0c776f64d\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"/></p><p>Kamala Harris. Official White House photo by Lawrence Jackson.</p><h2 id=\"id_2727723257\">Harris&#39; proposals that could affect the Magnificent Seven</h2><p>Harris has unveiled a wide range of economic proposals. Her campaign released an 82-page document outlining what she&#39;d like to do to create what she calls &#34;an opportunity economy.&#34; Not all of the proposals in this document affect the Magnificent Seven, but several could.</p><p>The vice president&#39;s plan to increase the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28% has received significant media attention. Although this is a large increase, it&#39;s still lower than the maximum corporate tax rate of 39% that was in place before former President Donald Trump&#39;s tax cuts went into effect in 2018.</p><p>Another Harris proposal is to quadruple the tax rate on corporate stock buybacks. The rationale behind this plan is &#34;to encourage businesses to invest in growth and productivity.&#34;</p><p>Harris also wants the federal government to invest in industries that are important to the country&#39;s economic and national security. Her plan specifically identifies the following types of businesses that would be eligible for tax credits:</p><ul style=\"\"><li><p>Aerospace companies</p></li><li><p>Artificial intelligence (AI) data centers</p></li><li><p>Automobile manufacturers</p></li><li><p>Biotechnology companies</p></li><li><p>Clean energy manufacturers</p></li><li><p>Semiconductor manufacturers</p></li><li><p>Steel and iron producers</p></li></ul><h2 id=\"id_3763262662\">Evaluating the impact of these proposals</h2><p>In theory, the members of the Magnificent Seven -- <strong>Alphabet</strong> (GOOG -2.47%) (GOOGL -2.44%), <strong>Amazon</strong> (AMZN -3.06%), <strong>Apple</strong> (AAPL -2.25%), <strong>Meta Platforms</strong> (META -1.87%), <strong>Microsoft</strong> (MSFT -1.57%), <strong>Nvidia</strong> (NVDA 2.24%), and <strong>Tesla</strong> (TSLA -3.70%) -- would be affected equally by Harris&#39; proposed corporate tax rate increase. Microsoft and Meta had the highest effective tax rates of the group. However, all of the companies have been adept at using the tax code to their advantage.</p><p>What about stock buybacks? Most of the Magnificent Seven members have repurchased shares in significant amounts. Apple has by far spent the most money on stock buybacks -- $70.6 billion in the nine months ended July 1, 2023. Increased taxes on stock buybacks could cause Apple and others to change their capital deployment strategies. However, I don&#39;t expect this would significantly impact their stock performance or underlying businesses.</p><p>Each of these companies could benefit from the tax credits for AI data centers proposed by Harris. As the three largest cloud services providers, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet might be the biggest winners on this front. However, Nvidia could also be helped quite a bit because its GPUs are used heavily in AI data centers. In addition, Nvidia and Tesla could potentially receive tax credits offered to semiconductor makers and automakers, respectively.</p><h2 id=\"id_2921650649\">The best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if Harris wins</h2><p>So what&#39;s the best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if Harris wins the presidential race? The honest answer is that there&#39;s insufficient information to know which stock might benefit the most from the aforementioned policies proposed by the vice president. Furthermore, it&#39;s uncertain if she would be able to implement all of her plans should she be elected. The U.S. Congress advances legislation; the president only signs the bills into law.</p><p>That said, many economists believe that Harris&#39; economic policies would help control inflation, while Trump&#39;s plans (especially his proposed tariffs) could cause inflation to rise. If these economists are right, interest rates would more likely be lower during a Harris administration than they would otherwise be.</p><p>While all the Magnificent Seven stocks should benefit from a lower-rate environment, I think the best pick of the group is Amazon. The company has a substantial debt load, which makes it a potentially bigger beneficiary of lower rates than the other Magnificent Seven members. Lower interest rates could also boost consumer and corporate spending, helping Amazon&#39;s e-commerce, advertising, and cloud services businesses.</p><p>Regardless of which person occupies the White House over the next four years, Amazon should benefit from the shift of IT spending to the cloud from on-premises. This migration will likely be accelerated by AI advances.</p><p>Surprisingly, Amazon stock has only climbed around 12% during Harris&#39; time as <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/VP..UK\">VP</a>. Despite the steep decline in 2022, the S&P 500 has soared nearly 50%. Much of this performance was driven by huge gains for the so-called \"Magnificent Seven\" stocks.Could this momentum continue in a Kamala Harris administration? And, if so, what's the best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if Harris wins in November?Kamala Harris. Her campaign released an 82-page document outlining what she'd like to do to create what she calls \"an opportunity economy.\" Not all of the proposals in this document affect the Magnificent Seven, but several could.The vice president's plan to increase the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28% has received significant media attention. Although this is a large increase, it's still lower than the maximum corporate tax rate of 39% that was in place before former President Donald Trump's tax cuts went into effect in 2018.Another Harris proposal is to quadruple the tax rate on corporate stock buybacks. The rationale behind this plan is \"to encourage businesses to invest in growth and productivity.\"Harris also wants the federal government to invest in industries that are important to the country's economic and national security. Most of the Magnificent Seven members have repurchased shares in significant amounts. Apple has by far spent the most money on stock buybacks -- $70.6 billion in the nine months ended July 1, 2023. Increased taxes on stock buybacks could cause Apple and others to change their capital deployment strategies. However, I don't expect this would significantly impact their stock performance or underlying businesses.Each of these companies could benefit from the tax credits for AI data centers proposed by Harris. As the three largest cloud services providers, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet might be the biggest winners on this front. However, Nvidia could also be helped quite a bit because its GPUs are used heavily in AI data centers. In addition, Nvidia and Tesla could potentially receive tax credits offered to semiconductor makers and automakers, respectively.The best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if Harris winsSo what's the best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if Harris wins the presidential race? The honest answer is that there's insufficient information to know which stock might benefit the most from the aforementioned policies proposed by the vice president. Furthermore, it's uncertain if she would be able to implement all of her plans should she be elected. The U.S. Congress advances legislation; the president only signs the bills into law.That said, many economists believe that Harris' economic policies would help control inflation, while Trump's plans (especially his proposed tariffs) could cause inflation to rise. If these economists are right, interest rates would more likely be lower during a Harris administration than they would otherwise be.While all the Magnificent Seven stocks should benefit from a lower-rate environment, I think the best pick of the group is Amazon. The company has a substantial debt load, which makes it a potentially bigger beneficiary of lower rates than the other Magnificent Seven members. Lower interest rates could also boost consumer and corporate spending, helping Amazon's e-commerce, advertising, and cloud services businesses.Regardless of which person occupies the White House over the next four years, Amazon should benefit from the shift of IT spending to the cloud from on-premises. This migration will likely be accelerated by AI advances.Surprisingly, Amazon stock has only climbed around 12% during Harris' time as VP. However, natural gas prices are also quite predictable in some ways as it is<span> mostly based on supply/demand factors and human behavior. In April, I </span>advised<span> investors that seasonality was favorable for trading short-term natural gas products like the ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Natural Gas ETF (</span><span>NYSEARCA:BOIL</span><span>) into June.</span></p> <p>Investors who followed my recommendation and bought the BOIL ETF on April 3rd (when my article was published) could have realized over 60% in total returns had they monetized at the peak in June (Figure 1).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <span><img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/7/9/54854261-17205664445987675.png\"/></span> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 1 - BOIL delivered over 60% in total returns from April to June <span>(Seeking Alpha)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>However, I also warned investors not to overstay their welcome, as the BOIL<span> ETF is not for buy-and-hold strategies. If investors had held onto the BOIL ETF from April 3rd to today, they would have experienced negative total returns of -9.1%.</span></p> <p>Unfortunately, a decline in value for the BOIL ETF is actually the norm due to the fund's amortizing structure.</p> <h2>Brief Fund Overview</h2> <p>For those who are new to my articles or the BOIL ETF story, the ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Natural Gas ETF is a futures-based ETF that seeks to provide daily returns that are twice the return of the Bloomberg Natural Gas Subindex (\"Index\"). The index reflects the daily performance of a rolling position in front-month natural gas futures. As front-month futures contracts expire, the index mechanically replaces them with futures contracts with a later expiration.</p> <p>Figure 2 shows the current holdings of the BOIL ETF, which consists of 200% exposure to September 2024 futures and cash (Figure 2).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <span><img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/7/9/54854261-17205668245576441.png\"/></span> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 2 - BOIL fund holdings <span>(proshares.com)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <h2>Not A Buy-And-Hold Fund</h2> <p>To reiterate my warning from the beginning of this article, the BOIL ETF is not suitable for long-term buy-and-hold investors. The main issue with the BOIL ETF (and other futures-based ETFs) is that future prices tend to be in contango, where prices farther out in maturity are more expensive (Figure 3).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://www.cmegroup.com/content/dam/cmegroup/education/courses/images/what-is-contango-and-backwardation-fig01.jpg\"/> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 3 - Ilustrative futures contango <span>(CME)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>So every time the near-month natural gas futures expire, the BOIL ETF must mechanically sell the expiring future at a lower price and buy a more expensive futures contract expiring at a later date as a replacement. This mechanical 'futures roll' process leads to the ETF suffering losses from 'roll decay' over time.</p> <p>A second issue with the BOIL ETF is the fact that it is leveraged. Levered ETFs have <em>'positive convexity'</em> in the direction of their exposure and <em>'volatility decay'</em> as they must rebalance their levered exposures every night.</p> <p>Using a mathematical example, assume an investor had invested $100 in BOIL. If the underlying index returns 5% on day 1, the position will grow to $110 (2 times 5% return). If the index returns -5% on day 2, the position will fall to $99, significantly less than twice the 2-day compounded loss of 0.25% or $99.50. This loss in value is called 'volatility decay'.</p> <p>Although 'volatility decay' is small on a day-to-day basis, for volatile assets like natural gas futures, the compounded slippage from volatility may be very significant.</p> <p>Traders considering the BOIL ETF should ensure they fully understand the tracking error risks involved with levered and futures-based commodity ETFs by consulting these FINRA and SEC warnings.</p> <h2>Natural Gas Seasonality Explained</h2> <p>For those new to natural gas trading, natural gas spot prices exhibit strong seasonality because the fuel is not as transportable as crude oil, and the demand for natural gas is driven by speculation around the summer cooling season and the winter heating season (Figure 4).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2023/8/11/54854261-16917588919216738_origin.png\"/> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 4 - Natural gas exhibits strong seasonality <span>(equityclock.com)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>In a typical year, speculators start to bet on summer cooling demand around March/April, and the speculative frenzy reaches a peak in June, just as actual cooling demand is realized.</p> <p>Then during the summer months of June and July, even though the weather may be very hot, spot natural gas prices tend to decline as reality is often not as bad as feared.</p> <p>A similar process begins in August as natural gas traders begin to speculate about winter heating demand. Winter speculation reaches a peak in late November/early December, and declines as actual heating demand is realized in January/February.</p> <p>While no two seasons are the precisely same, the general seasonality for natural gas prices is very pronounced and has rewarded me handsomely over the years.</p> <h2>Natural Gas Storage Pressuring Spot Prices</h2> <p>For now, I expect natural gas prices to remain soft for the next several weeks, as gas in storage has remained above the 5-year average due to strong production (Figure 5).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <span><img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/7/9/54854261-1720567822505246.png\"/></span> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 5 - Natural gas in storage above seasonal levels <span>(EIA)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>For investors looking to take a long swing trade on the BOIL ETF or other related products like the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG), I recommend they be patient and reassess the gas markets in August/September, to see how much gas has been drawn to fuel the summer cooling season and the prospects for the upcoming winter heating season.</p> <h2>Watch For Signs Of La Niña In Coming Months</h2> <p>For natural gas speculators, the wild cards disrupting seasonality patterns may be climate change and El Niño/La Niña effects. For those not familiar, El Niño and La Niña are climate patterns in the Pacific <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/1B6.SI\">Ocean</a> that can affect weather patterns worldwide.</p> <p>El Niño tends to cause dryer and hotter weather across the U.S. and Canada (Figure 6).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/7/9/saupload_elnino.jpg\"/> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 6 - El Nino weather patterns <span>(NOAA)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>In contrast, La Niña brings colder and wetter weather to North America (Figure 7).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/7/9/saupload_lanina.jpg\"/> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 7 - La Nina weather patterns <span>(NOAA)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>Last year's El Niño was one of the reasons why the North American winter we experienced in 2023/2024 was one of the mildest on record. However, El Niño conditions recently ended with sea temperatures returning to normal (Figure 8).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <span><img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/7/9/54854261-17205686942679386.png\"/></span> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 8 - Sea temperatures are back to normal <span>(NOAA)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>Looking forward, according to the NOAA, there is a 65% chance that La Niña conditions may develop in the next few months. So investors looking to bet on a colder/wetter than normal winter season requiring more heating may want to keep a close eye on upcoming NOAA reports.</p> <h2>Conclusion</h2> <p>The bullish case for the BOIL ETF recently ended in June, as positive seasonality and El Niño conditions both concluded. Looking forward, I believe bullish investors need to be patient and wait for winter fuel demand speculation to start in late August/September before making another bet on BOIL.</p> <div></div> <p>This upcoming winter season could be fruitful, as there is currently a 65% chance of La Niña conditions developing for the upcoming winter season. Typically, La Niña winters are colder and wetter than normal, which could increase fuel demand. However, natural gas prices are also quite predictable in some ways as it is mostly based on supply/demand factors and human behavior. In April, I advised investors that seasonality was favorable for trading short-term natural gas products like the ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Natural Gas ETF (NYSEARCA:BOIL) into June. Investors who followed my recommendation and bought the BOIL ETF on April 3rd (when my article was published) could have realized over 60% in total returns had they monetized at the peak in June (Figure 1).   Figure 1 - BOIL delivered over 60% in total returns from April to June (Seeking Alpha) However, I also warned investors not to overstay their welcome, as the BOIL ETF is not for buy-and-hold strategies. If investors had held onto the BOIL ETF from April 3rd to today, they would have experienced negative total returns of -9.1%. Unfortunately, a decline in value for the BOIL ETF is actually the norm due to the fund's amortizing structure. Brief Fund Overview For those who are new to my articles or the BOIL ETF story, the ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Natural Gas ETF is a futures-based ETF that seeks to provide daily returns that are twice the return of the Bloomberg Natural Gas Subindex (\"Index\"). The index reflects the daily performance of a rolling position in front-month natural gas futures. As front-month futures contracts expire, the index mechanically replaces them with futures contracts with a later expiration. Figure 2 shows the current holdings of the BOIL ETF, which consists of 200% exposure to September 2024 futures and cash (Figure 2).   Figure 2 - BOIL fund holdings (proshares.com) Not A Buy-And-Hold Fund To reiterate my warning from the beginning of this article, the BOIL ETF is not suitable for long-term buy-and-hold investors. The main issue with the BOIL ETF (and other futures-based ETFs) is that future prices tend to be in contango, where prices farther out in maturity are more expensive (Figure 3).   Figure 3 - Ilustrative futures contango (CME) So every time the near-month natural gas futures expire, the BOIL ETF must mechanically sell the expiring future at a lower price and buy a more expensive futures contract expiring at a later date as a replacement. This mechanical 'futures roll' process leads to the ETF suffering losses from 'roll decay' over time. A second issue with the BOIL ETF is the fact that it is leveraged. Levered ETFs have 'positive convexity' in the direction of their exposure and 'volatility decay' as they must rebalance their levered exposures every night. Using a mathematical example, assume an investor had invested $100 in BOIL. If the underlying index returns 5% on day 1, the position will grow to $110 (2 times 5% return). If the index returns -5% on day 2, the position will fall to $99, significantly less than twice the 2-day compounded loss of 0.25% or $99.50. This loss in value is called 'volatility decay'. Although 'volatility decay' is small on a day-to-day basis, for volatile assets like natural gas futures, the compounded slippage from volatility may be very significant. Traders considering the BOIL ETF should ensure they fully understand the tracking error risks involved with levered and futures-based commodity ETFs by consulting these FINRA and SEC warnings. Natural Gas Seasonality Explained For those new to natural gas trading, natural gas spot prices exhibit strong seasonality because the fuel is not as transportable as crude oil, and the demand for natural gas is driven by speculation around the summer cooling season and the winter heating season (Figure 4).   Figure 4 - Natural gas exhibits strong seasonality (equityclock.com) In a typical year, speculators start to bet on summer cooling demand around March/April, and the speculative frenzy reaches a peak in June, just as actual cooling demand is realized. Then during the summer months of June and July, even though the weather may be very hot, spot natural gas prices tend to decline as reality is often not as bad as feared. A similar process begins in August as natural gas traders begin to speculate about winter heating demand. Winter speculation reaches a peak in late November/early December, and declines as actual heating demand is realized in January/February. While no two seasons are the precisely same, the general seasonality for natural gas prices is very pronounced and has rewarded me handsomely over the years. Natural Gas Storage Pressuring Spot Prices For now, I expect natural gas prices to remain soft for the next several weeks, as gas in storage has remained above the 5-year average due to strong production (Figure 5).   Figure 5 - Natural gas in storage above seasonal levels (EIA) For investors looking to take a long swing trade on the BOIL ETF or other related products like the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG), I recommend they be patient and reassess the gas markets in August/September, to see how much gas has been drawn to fuel the summer cooling season and the prospects for the upcoming winter heating season. Watch For Signs Of La Niña In Coming Months For natural gas speculators, the wild cards disrupting seasonality patterns may be climate change and El Niño/La Niña effects. For those not familiar, El Niño and La Niña are climate patterns in the Pacific Ocean that can affect weather patterns worldwide. El Niño tends to cause dryer and hotter weather across the U.S. and Canada (Figure 6).   Figure 6 - El Nino weather patterns (NOAA) In contrast, La Niña brings colder and wetter weather to North America (Figure 7).   Figure 7 - La Nina weather patterns (NOAA) Last year's El Niño was one of the reasons why the North American winter we experienced in 2023/2024 was one of the mildest on record. However, El Niño conditions recently ended with sea temperatures returning to normal (Figure 8).   Figure 8 - Sea temperatures are back to normal (NOAA) Looking forward, according to the NOAA, there is a 65% chance that La Niña conditions may develop in the next few months. So investors looking to bet on a colder/wetter than normal winter season requiring more heating may want to keep a close eye on upcoming NOAA reports. Conclusion The bullish case for the BOIL ETF recently ended in June, as positive seasonality and El Niño conditions both concluded. Looking forward, I believe bullish investors need to be patient and wait for winter fuel demand speculation to start in late August/September before making another bet on BOIL.  This upcoming winter season could be fruitful, as there is currently a 65% chance of La Niña conditions developing for the upcoming winter season. Typically, La Niña winters are colder and wetter than normal, which could increase fuel demand. In early August, the company is expected to report its Q2 earnings results, which would give investors a better understanding of whether this AI-related premium at which its shares currently trade is justified in the first place. Even though Palantir appears to be greatly overvalued right now, there are reasons to believe that the company&#39;s growth story is far from over and there&#39;s still some upside left.</p><h2 id=\"id_4148420583\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Is Generative AI The Next Big Thing?</h2><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Last month I published an extensive article on Palantir&#39;s work in Ukraine, explained how the company is able to test its software on an actual battlefield in real-time and also addressed some of the bearish points that were raised by a popular short-selling newsletter. While that article extensively covered various parts of Palantir&#39;s business, it didn&#39;t fully highlight how the company now has the potential to aggressively grow its sales and greatly improve its performance thanks to its entrance into the generative AI field a couple of months ago. Considering that Palantir&#39;s stock has been able to skyrocket in the last few weeks and reach its 52-week highs mostly thanks to the market&#39;s obsession with AI, I decided to share some of my thoughts on why shares have the potential to appreciate even further ahead of the release of Q2 earnings results in August.</p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the last few months, I have been incorporating various generative AI applications into my workflow, which were able to perform a range of mundane tasks and helped me to increase my productivity. By having a first-hand experience with generative AI, I concluded that it&#39;s not another fad like the metaverse and it actually has the potential to have a profound impact on our society. That&#39;s likely one of the main reasons why we begin to see reports which expect the generative AI field to become an over $1 trillion market in the next decade and grow at a CAGR of over 40%. Add to all of this the fact that Apple (AAPL), Meta Platforms (META), Amazon (AMZN), and even Elon Musk revealed their own generative AI products in the last few weeks and it becomes obvious that it&#39;s not another hype story. As Big Tech scales its presence in the field, so is Palantir with the introduction of AIP in April.</p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">From what we know so far, AIP promotes human-AI collaborations by helping organizations deploy large language models within their internal systems that could understand, recommend, and trigger different business processes and actions. Think of it as ChatGPT that&#39;s personalized for your own workflow and is working within your environment whether you&#39;re a commercial or a military client of Palantir. In May, the company&#39;s management revealed that they are seeing unprecedented demand for AIP while earlier this month Bloomberg reported that the US military has also started testing generative AI applications and also noted that Palantir is one of the companies that develops AI-based platforms for the Pentagon.</p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Considering this, there are reasons to believe that Palantir&#39;s stock still has more upside after the latest rally, but only the Q2 results and an updated outlook for the year will properly show how much of this unprecedented demand will translate into monetary value.</p><h2 id=\"id_3591571458\" style=\"text-align: left;\">What&#39;s Next?</h2><p style=\"text-align: left;\">We already see how other companies that became leaders of the generative AI field earlier this year have seen their estimates for the year greatly increase. Some analysts now believe that Microsoft (MSFT) would be able to generate an additional $20 billion in revenues thanks to the launch of a single generative AI feature for its core products, while others think that the company would even be able to double revenues for some of its flagship products in the following years. The street now also expects Nvidia (NVDA), which sells major GPUs on which generative AI applications run, to increase its EPS by ~138% Y/Y and grow its revenues by ~61% this fiscal year.</p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Despite this, most analysts still have no idea how big of an impact the AIP sales would have on Palantir&#39;s overall performance. To this day, the street expects the company&#39;s revenues to increase only by 15.9% Y/Y in FY23, which is in-line with the previous estimates before the generative AI applications truly took off and increased in popularity. Therefore, it seems that analysts expect further guidance from the management before deciding whether to revise their forecasts.</p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">However, if Goldman Sachs (GS) is correct in its forecast that generative AI could raise the global GDP by 7%, then it&#39;s a clear sign that the industry would continue to expand, and new applications would be entering the market en masse in the following quarters. Therefore, if generative AI truly becomes an over $1 trillion market in the next decade, then Palantir&#39;s TAM would also greatly increase and its current market capitalization of ~$35 billion could be more than justified.</p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">That&#39;s likely one of the reasons why Palantir&#39;s shares haven&#39;t depreciated after the latest rally while Seeking Alpha&#39;s Quant system even gave the company&#39;s stock a rating of &#39;Strong Buy&#39;. Add to all of this the fact that Wedbush recently decided to give Palantir a price target of $25 per share due to its competitive advantages in the coming AI revolution and we could conclude that the current AI premium at which its shares currently trade is more than justified.</p><h2 id=\"id_1028404791\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Valuation Dilemma</h2><p style=\"text-align: left;\">At this stage, the only major risk associated with investing in Palantir is the lack of clear understanding about what is the true value of its business. My DCF model from May along with the street average forecasts that are based on previous assumptions show that Palantir&#39;s fair value is in the range of $9 per share to $12 per share, which is below the current market price of ~$18 per share. However, since the beginning of summer, the generative AI field has truly taken off, but the assumptions haven&#39;t been properly revised as Wall Street is not entirely sure how big of an impact AIP will have on Palantir&#39;s financials and its valuation.</p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Considering this, it all comes down to whether the management would be able to convince the street why this rally has more legs to justify the current valuation at the upcoming earnings call in early August. I remain optimistic as there&#39;s a clear indication that the generative AI field would continue to expand at an aggressive rate and have a profound impact on our society. This should lead to the aggressive expansion of Palantir&#39;s TAM in the following years since the company already has a scalable product in the generative AI field that has experienced unprecedented demand since its launch a few months ago. Her campaign released an 82-page document outlining what she&#39;d like to do to create what she calls &#34;an opportunity economy.&#34; Not all of the proposals in this document affect the Magnificent Seven, but several could.</p><p>The vice president&#39;s plan to increase the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28% has received significant media attention. Although this is a large increase, it&#39;s still lower than the maximum corporate tax rate of 39% that was in place before former President Donald Trump&#39;s tax cuts went into effect in 2018.</p><p>Another Harris proposal is to quadruple the tax rate on corporate stock buybacks. The rationale behind this plan is &#34;to encourage businesses to invest in growth and productivity.&#34;</p><p>Harris also wants the federal government to invest in industries that are important to the country&#39;s economic and national security. Her plan specifically identifies the following types of businesses that would be eligible for tax credits:</p><ul style=\"\"><li><p>Aerospace companies</p></li><li><p>Artificial intelligence (AI) data centers</p></li><li><p>Automobile manufacturers</p></li><li><p>Biotechnology companies</p></li><li><p>Clean energy manufacturers</p></li><li><p>Semiconductor manufacturers</p></li><li><p>Steel and iron producers</p></li></ul><h2 id=\"id_3763262662\">Evaluating the impact of these proposals</h2><p>In theory, the members of the Magnificent Seven -- <strong>Alphabet</strong> (GOOG -2.47%) (GOOGL -2.44%), <strong>Amazon</strong> (AMZN -3.06%), <strong>Apple</strong> (AAPL -2.25%), <strong>Meta Platforms</strong> (META -1.87%), <strong>Microsoft</strong> (MSFT -1.57%), <strong>Nvidia</strong> (NVDA 2.24%), and <strong>Tesla</strong> (TSLA -3.70%) -- would be affected equally by Harris&#39; proposed corporate tax rate increase. Microsoft and Meta had the highest effective tax rates of the group. However, all of the companies have been adept at using the tax code to their advantage.</p><p>What about stock buybacks? Most of the Magnificent Seven members have repurchased shares in significant amounts. Apple has by far spent the most money on stock buybacks -- $70.6 billion in the nine months ended July 1, 2023. Increased taxes on stock buybacks could cause Apple and others to change their capital deployment strategies. However, I don&#39;t expect this would significantly impact their stock performance or underlying businesses.</p><p>Each of these companies could benefit from the tax credits for AI data centers proposed by Harris. As the three largest cloud services providers, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet might be the biggest winners on this front. However, Nvidia could also be helped quite a bit because its GPUs are used heavily in AI data centers. In addition, Nvidia and Tesla could potentially receive tax credits offered to semiconductor makers and automakers, respectively.</p><h2 id=\"id_2921650649\">The best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if Harris wins</h2><p>So what&#39;s the best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if Harris wins the presidential race? The honest answer is that there&#39;s insufficient information to know which stock might benefit the most from the aforementioned policies proposed by the vice president. Furthermore, it&#39;s uncertain if she would be able to implement all of her plans should she be elected. The U.S. Congress advances legislation; the president only signs the bills into law.</p><p>That said, many economists believe that Harris&#39; economic policies would help control inflation, while Trump&#39;s plans (especially his proposed tariffs) could cause inflation to rise. If these economists are right, interest rates would more likely be lower during a Harris administration than they would otherwise be.</p><p>While all the Magnificent Seven stocks should benefit from a lower-rate environment, I think the best pick of the group is Amazon. The company has a substantial debt load, which makes it a potentially bigger beneficiary of lower rates than the other Magnificent Seven members. Lower interest rates could also boost consumer and corporate spending, helping Amazon&#39;s e-commerce, advertising, and cloud services businesses.</p><p>Regardless of which person occupies the White House over the next four years, Amazon should benefit from the shift of IT spending to the cloud from on-premises. This migration will likely be accelerated by AI advances.</p><p>Surprisingly, Amazon stock has only climbed around 12% during Harris&#39; time as <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/VP..UK\">VP</a>. Despite the steep decline in 2022, the S&P 500 has soared nearly 50%. Much of this performance was driven by huge gains for the so-called \"Magnificent Seven\" stocks.Could this momentum continue in a Kamala Harris administration? And, if so, what's the best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if Harris wins in November?Kamala Harris. Her campaign released an 82-page document outlining what she'd like to do to create what she calls \"an opportunity economy.\" Not all of the proposals in this document affect the Magnificent Seven, but several could.The vice president's plan to increase the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28% has received significant media attention. Although this is a large increase, it's still lower than the maximum corporate tax rate of 39% that was in place before former President Donald Trump's tax cuts went into effect in 2018.Another Harris proposal is to quadruple the tax rate on corporate stock buybacks. The rationale behind this plan is \"to encourage businesses to invest in growth and productivity.\"Harris also wants the federal government to invest in industries that are important to the country's economic and national security. Most of the Magnificent Seven members have repurchased shares in significant amounts. Apple has by far spent the most money on stock buybacks -- $70.6 billion in the nine months ended July 1, 2023. Increased taxes on stock buybacks could cause Apple and others to change their capital deployment strategies. However, I don't expect this would significantly impact their stock performance or underlying businesses.Each of these companies could benefit from the tax credits for AI data centers proposed by Harris. As the three largest cloud services providers, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet might be the biggest winners on this front. However, Nvidia could also be helped quite a bit because its GPUs are used heavily in AI data centers. In addition, Nvidia and Tesla could potentially receive tax credits offered to semiconductor makers and automakers, respectively.The best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if Harris winsSo what's the best Magnificent Seven stock to buy if Harris wins the presidential race? The honest answer is that there's insufficient information to know which stock might benefit the most from the aforementioned policies proposed by the vice president. Furthermore, it's uncertain if she would be able to implement all of her plans should she be elected. The U.S. Congress advances legislation; the president only signs the bills into law.That said, many economists believe that Harris' economic policies would help control inflation, while Trump's plans (especially his proposed tariffs) could cause inflation to rise. If these economists are right, interest rates would more likely be lower during a Harris administration than they would otherwise be.While all the Magnificent Seven stocks should benefit from a lower-rate environment, I think the best pick of the group is Amazon. The company has a substantial debt load, which makes it a potentially bigger beneficiary of lower rates than the other Magnificent Seven members. Lower interest rates could also boost consumer and corporate spending, helping Amazon's e-commerce, advertising, and cloud services businesses.Regardless of which person occupies the White House over the next four years, Amazon should benefit from the shift of IT spending to the cloud from on-premises. This migration will likely be accelerated by AI advances.Surprisingly, Amazon stock has only climbed around 12% during Harris' time as VP. Now, I’m having serious doubts and can’t bring myself to recommend investing in Reddit stock right now.</p><p>I’m not denying that Reddit’s debut for public trading could still be 2024’s most important initial public offering. At the same time, it’s too risky to hold more than a few shares of RDDT stock. So, don’t go overboard and, as always, be sure to have an exit strategy in place.</p><h2 id=\"id_324095180\">Reddit Stock: Was This a Pump-and-Dump?</h2><p>First things first: I’m not directly accusing Reddit’s management of perpetuating a pump-and-dump scheme. However, it’s quite interesting that at least two insiders dumped large quantities of Reddit shares soon after the company’s IPO.</p><p>Here’s the timeline. Reddit started trading under the symbol RDDT on the <strong>New York Stock Exchange</strong> on March 21. For what it’s worth, <em>InvestorPlace</em> contributor Chris MacDonald warned that Reddit’s insiders would “be able to sell stock immediately following the IPO.”</p><p>Then, on March 25, Reddit Chief Financial Officer Andrew Vollero reportedly sold 71,765 shares of the company. That transaction was worth slightly more than $2.3 million.</p><p>That same day, Reddit President and CEO Steve Huffman reportedly sold 500,000 shares of his company. Stunningly, that transaction was valued at over $16 million.</p><p>I’ll let you draw whatever conclusions you’d like from this information. Personally, I imagine that confident Reddit insiders would be buyers, not sellers.</p><h2 id=\"id_2108379479\">Could RDDT Stock Drop 50%?</h2><p>For a while, investors shouldn’t expect Reddit’s fundamentals to drive movements in Reddit stock. In the short term, meme-stock traders might move the Reddit share price higher, while short sellers will push it down.</p><p>Because of the anticipated near-term volatility, it’s difficult to attach a confident price target to RDDT stock.</p><p>Some analysts have offered their opinions, though. For example, New Street analysts reportedly envision the Reddit share price landing at $54.</p><p>A more notable prediction, however, came from Hedgeye Risk Management analysts.</p><p>They see Reddit stock collapsing to $34, which was around 50% below the share price when the Hedgeye analysts issued their price target.</p><p>The firm considered RDDT stock to be “grossly overvalued.” That may or may not be the case, though it’s challenging to assign a fair value to a highly volatile stock so soon after its public debut.</p><p>Furthermore, Hedgeye analyst Andrew Freedman almost seemed disgusted by the early hype surrounding the Reddit IPO.</p><p>“The deal was oversubscribed, the float small, valuation range looked reasonable, and they timed the IPO coincident with easy comparisons where the company is going to post accelerating revenue and user growth the first quarter out of the gate as a public company,” he wrote.</p><p>You might agree with Freedman’s assessment, or you may choose to disagree. Either way, it will probably be a few weeks or even months before the market achieves “price discovery” and figures out an appropriate price range for Reddit stock.</p><h2 id=\"id_2022686764\">Reddit Stock: Stay Small, or Don’t Stay at All</h2><p>The Reddit share price could fall 50%, or it could double or triple. For the time being, keep tabs on Reddit’s fundamentals but also pay close attention to short-selling activity.</p><p>Moreover, it’s noteworthy that a couple of Reddit insiders dumped shares of the company soon after its IPO. I posited that Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) shares could rally like Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) stock did. Now, I’m having serious doubts and can’t bring myself to recommend investing in Reddit stock right now.I’m not denying that Reddit’s debut for public trading could still be 2024’s most important initial public offering. At the same time, it’s too risky to hold more than a few shares of RDDT stock. So, don’t go overboard and, as always, be sure to have an exit strategy in place.Reddit Stock: Was This a Pump-and-Dump?First things first: I’m not directly accusing Reddit’s management of perpetuating a pump-and-dump scheme. However, it’s quite interesting that at least two insiders dumped large quantities of Reddit shares soon after the company’s IPO.Here’s the timeline. Reddit started trading under the symbol RDDT on the New York Stock Exchange on March 21. For what it’s worth, InvestorPlace contributor Chris MacDonald warned that Reddit’s insiders would “be able to sell stock immediately following the IPO.”Then, on March 25, Reddit Chief Financial Officer Andrew Vollero reportedly sold 71,765 shares of the company. That transaction was worth slightly more than $2.3 million.That same day, Reddit President and CEO Steve Huffman reportedly sold 500,000 shares of his company. Stunningly, that transaction was valued at over $16 million.I’ll let you draw whatever conclusions you’d like from this information. Personally, I imagine that confident Reddit insiders would be buyers, not sellers.Could RDDT Stock Drop 50%?For a while, investors shouldn’t expect Reddit’s fundamentals to drive movements in Reddit stock. In the short term, meme-stock traders might move the Reddit share price higher, while short sellers will push it down.Because of the anticipated near-term volatility, it’s difficult to attach a confident price target to RDDT stock.Some analysts have offered their opinions, though. For example, New Street analysts reportedly envision the Reddit share price landing at $54.A more notable prediction, however, came from Hedgeye Risk Management analysts.They see Reddit stock collapsing to $34, which was around 50% below the share price when the Hedgeye analysts issued their price target.The firm considered RDDT stock to be “grossly overvalued.” That may or may not be the case, though it’s challenging to assign a fair value to a highly volatile stock so soon after its public debut.Furthermore, Hedgeye analyst Andrew Freedman almost seemed disgusted by the early hype surrounding the Reddit IPO.“The deal was oversubscribed, the float small, valuation range looked reasonable, and they timed the IPO coincident with easy comparisons where the company is going to post accelerating revenue and user growth the first quarter out of the gate as a public company,” he wrote.You might agree with Freedman’s assessment, or you may choose to disagree. Either way, it will probably be a few weeks or even months before the market achieves “price discovery” and figures out an appropriate price range for Reddit stock.Reddit Stock: Stay Small, or Don’t Stay at AllThe Reddit share price could fall 50%, or it could double or triple. For the time being, keep tabs on Reddit’s fundamentals but also pay close attention to short-selling activity.Moreover, it’s noteworthy that a couple of Reddit insiders dumped shares of the company soon after its IPO. However, natural gas prices are also quite predictable in some ways as it is<span> mostly based on supply/demand factors and human behavior. In April, I </span>advised<span> investors that seasonality was favorable for trading short-term natural gas products like the ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Natural Gas ETF (</span><span>NYSEARCA:BOIL</span><span>) into June.</span></p> <p>Investors who followed my recommendation and bought the BOIL ETF on April 3rd (when my article was published) could have realized over 60% in total returns had they monetized at the peak in June (Figure 1).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <span><img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/7/9/54854261-17205664445987675.png\"/></span> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 1 - BOIL delivered over 60% in total returns from April to June <span>(Seeking Alpha)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>However, I also warned investors not to overstay their welcome, as the BOIL<span> ETF is not for buy-and-hold strategies. If investors had held onto the BOIL ETF from April 3rd to today, they would have experienced negative total returns of -9.1%.</span></p> <p>Unfortunately, a decline in value for the BOIL ETF is actually the norm due to the fund's amortizing structure.</p> <h2>Brief Fund Overview</h2> <p>For those who are new to my articles or the BOIL ETF story, the ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Natural Gas ETF is a futures-based ETF that seeks to provide daily returns that are twice the return of the Bloomberg Natural Gas Subindex (\"Index\"). The index reflects the daily performance of a rolling position in front-month natural gas futures. As front-month futures contracts expire, the index mechanically replaces them with futures contracts with a later expiration.</p> <p>Figure 2 shows the current holdings of the BOIL ETF, which consists of 200% exposure to September 2024 futures and cash (Figure 2).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <span><img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/7/9/54854261-17205668245576441.png\"/></span> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 2 - BOIL fund holdings <span>(proshares.com)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <h2>Not A Buy-And-Hold Fund</h2> <p>To reiterate my warning from the beginning of this article, the BOIL ETF is not suitable for long-term buy-and-hold investors. The main issue with the BOIL ETF (and other futures-based ETFs) is that future prices tend to be in contango, where prices farther out in maturity are more expensive (Figure 3).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://www.cmegroup.com/content/dam/cmegroup/education/courses/images/what-is-contango-and-backwardation-fig01.jpg\"/> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 3 - Ilustrative futures contango <span>(CME)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>So every time the near-month natural gas futures expire, the BOIL ETF must mechanically sell the expiring future at a lower price and buy a more expensive futures contract expiring at a later date as a replacement. This mechanical 'futures roll' process leads to the ETF suffering losses from 'roll decay' over time.</p> <p>A second issue with the BOIL ETF is the fact that it is leveraged. Levered ETFs have <em>'positive convexity'</em> in the direction of their exposure and <em>'volatility decay'</em> as they must rebalance their levered exposures every night.</p> <p>Using a mathematical example, assume an investor had invested $100 in BOIL. If the underlying index returns 5% on day 1, the position will grow to $110 (2 times 5% return). If the index returns -5% on day 2, the position will fall to $99, significantly less than twice the 2-day compounded loss of 0.25% or $99.50. This loss in value is called 'volatility decay'.</p> <p>Although 'volatility decay' is small on a day-to-day basis, for volatile assets like natural gas futures, the compounded slippage from volatility may be very significant.</p> <p>Traders considering the BOIL ETF should ensure they fully understand the tracking error risks involved with levered and futures-based commodity ETFs by consulting these FINRA and SEC warnings.</p> <h2>Natural Gas Seasonality Explained</h2> <p>For those new to natural gas trading, natural gas spot prices exhibit strong seasonality because the fuel is not as transportable as crude oil, and the demand for natural gas is driven by speculation around the summer cooling season and the winter heating season (Figure 4).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2023/8/11/54854261-16917588919216738_origin.png\"/> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 4 - Natural gas exhibits strong seasonality <span>(equityclock.com)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>In a typical year, speculators start to bet on summer cooling demand around March/April, and the speculative frenzy reaches a peak in June, just as actual cooling demand is realized.</p> <p>Then during the summer months of June and July, even though the weather may be very hot, spot natural gas prices tend to decline as reality is often not as bad as feared.</p> <p>A similar process begins in August as natural gas traders begin to speculate about winter heating demand. Winter speculation reaches a peak in late November/early December, and declines as actual heating demand is realized in January/February.</p> <p>While no two seasons are the precisely same, the general seasonality for natural gas prices is very pronounced and has rewarded me handsomely over the years.</p> <h2>Natural Gas Storage Pressuring Spot Prices</h2> <p>For now, I expect natural gas prices to remain soft for the next several weeks, as gas in storage has remained above the 5-year average due to strong production (Figure 5).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <span><img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/7/9/54854261-1720567822505246.png\"/></span> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 5 - Natural gas in storage above seasonal levels <span>(EIA)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>For investors looking to take a long swing trade on the BOIL ETF or other related products like the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG), I recommend they be patient and reassess the gas markets in August/September, to see how much gas has been drawn to fuel the summer cooling season and the prospects for the upcoming winter heating season.</p> <h2>Watch For Signs Of La Niña In Coming Months</h2> <p>For natural gas speculators, the wild cards disrupting seasonality patterns may be climate change and El Niño/La Niña effects. For those not familiar, El Niño and La Niña are climate patterns in the Pacific <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/1B6.SI\">Ocean</a> that can affect weather patterns worldwide.</p> <p>El Niño tends to cause dryer and hotter weather across the U.S. and Canada (Figure 6).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/7/9/saupload_elnino.jpg\"/> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 6 - El Nino weather patterns <span>(NOAA)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>In contrast, La Niña brings colder and wetter weather to North America (Figure 7).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/7/9/saupload_lanina.jpg\"/> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 7 - La Nina weather patterns <span>(NOAA)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>Last year's El Niño was one of the reasons why the North American winter we experienced in 2023/2024 was one of the mildest on record. However, El Niño conditions recently ended with sea temperatures returning to normal (Figure 8).</p> <p><figure contenteditable=\"false\"><picture> <span><img contenteditable=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/7/9/54854261-17205686942679386.png\"/></span> </picture><figcaption><p>Figure 8 - Sea temperatures are back to normal <span>(NOAA)</span></p></figcaption></figure></p> <p>Looking forward, according to the NOAA, there is a 65% chance that La Niña conditions may develop in the next few months. So investors looking to bet on a colder/wetter than normal winter season requiring more heating may want to keep a close eye on upcoming NOAA reports.</p> <h2>Conclusion</h2> <p>The bullish case for the BOIL ETF recently ended in June, as positive seasonality and El Niño conditions both concluded. Looking forward, I believe bullish investors need to be patient and wait for winter fuel demand speculation to start in late August/September before making another bet on BOIL.</p> <div></div> <p>This upcoming winter season could be fruitful, as there is currently a 65% chance of La Niña conditions developing for the upcoming winter season. Typically, La Niña winters are colder and wetter than normal, which could increase fuel demand. However, natural gas prices are also quite predictable in some ways as it is mostly based on supply/demand factors and human behavior. In April, I advised investors that seasonality was favorable for trading short-term natural gas products like the ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Natural Gas ETF (NYSEARCA:BOIL) into June. Investors who followed my recommendation and bought the BOIL ETF on April 3rd (when my article was published) could have realized over 60% in total returns had they monetized at the peak in June (Figure 1).   Figure 1 - BOIL delivered over 60% in total returns from April to June (Seeking Alpha) However, I also warned investors not to overstay their welcome, as the BOIL ETF is not for buy-and-hold strategies. If investors had held onto the BOIL ETF from April 3rd to today, they would have experienced negative total returns of -9.1%. Unfortunately, a decline in value for the BOIL ETF is actually the norm due to the fund's amortizing structure. Brief Fund Overview For those who are new to my articles or the BOIL ETF story, the ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Natural Gas ETF is a futures-based ETF that seeks to provide daily returns that are twice the return of the Bloomberg Natural Gas Subindex (\"Index\"). The index reflects the daily performance of a rolling position in front-month natural gas futures. As front-month futures contracts expire, the index mechanically replaces them with futures contracts with a later expiration. Figure 2 shows the current holdings of the BOIL ETF, which consists of 200% exposure to September 2024 futures and cash (Figure 2).   Figure 2 - BOIL fund holdings (proshares.com) Not A Buy-And-Hold Fund To reiterate my warning from the beginning of this article, the BOIL ETF is not suitable for long-term buy-and-hold investors. The main issue with the BOIL ETF (and other futures-based ETFs) is that future prices tend to be in contango, where prices farther out in maturity are more expensive (Figure 3).   Figure 3 - Ilustrative futures contango (CME) So every time the near-month natural gas futures expire, the BOIL ETF must mechanically sell the expiring future at a lower price and buy a more expensive futures contract expiring at a later date as a replacement. This mechanical 'futures roll' process leads to the ETF suffering losses from 'roll decay' over time. A second issue with the BOIL ETF is the fact that it is leveraged. Levered ETFs have 'positive convexity' in the direction of their exposure and 'volatility decay' as they must rebalance their levered exposures every night. Using a mathematical example, assume an investor had invested $100 in BOIL. If the underlying index returns 5% on day 1, the position will grow to $110 (2 times 5% return). If the index returns -5% on day 2, the position will fall to $99, significantly less than twice the 2-day compounded loss of 0.25% or $99.50. This loss in value is called 'volatility decay'. Although 'volatility decay' is small on a day-to-day basis, for volatile assets like natural gas futures, the compounded slippage from volatility may be very significant. Traders considering the BOIL ETF should ensure they fully understand the tracking error risks involved with levered and futures-based commodity ETFs by consulting these FINRA and SEC warnings. Natural Gas Seasonality Explained For those new to natural gas trading, natural gas spot prices exhibit strong seasonality because the fuel is not as transportable as crude oil, and the demand for natural gas is driven by speculation around the summer cooling season and the winter heating season (Figure 4).   Figure 4 - Natural gas exhibits strong seasonality (equityclock.com) In a typical year, speculators start to bet on summer cooling demand around March/April, and the speculative frenzy reaches a peak in June, just as actual cooling demand is realized. Then during the summer months of June and July, even though the weather may be very hot, spot natural gas prices tend to decline as reality is often not as bad as feared. A similar process begins in August as natural gas traders begin to speculate about winter heating demand. Winter speculation reaches a peak in late November/early December, and declines as actual heating demand is realized in January/February. While no two seasons are the precisely same, the general seasonality for natural gas prices is very pronounced and has rewarded me handsomely over the years. Natural Gas Storage Pressuring Spot Prices For now, I expect natural gas prices to remain soft for the next several weeks, as gas in storage has remained above the 5-year average due to strong production (Figure 5).   Figure 5 - Natural gas in storage above seasonal levels (EIA) For investors looking to take a long swing trade on the BOIL ETF or other related products like the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG), I recommend they be patient and reassess the gas markets in August/September, to see how much gas has been drawn to fuel the summer cooling season and the prospects for the upcoming winter heating season. Watch For Signs Of La Niña In Coming Months For natural gas speculators, the wild cards disrupting seasonality patterns may be climate change and El Niño/La Niña effects. For those not familiar, El Niño and La Niña are climate patterns in the Pacific Ocean that can affect weather patterns worldwide. El Niño tends to cause dryer and hotter weather across the U.S. and Canada (Figure 6).   Figure 6 - El Nino weather patterns (NOAA) In contrast, La Niña brings colder and wetter weather to North America (Figure 7).   Figure 7 - La Nina weather patterns (NOAA) Last year's El Niño was one of the reasons why the North American winter we experienced in 2023/2024 was one of the mildest on record. However, El Niño conditions recently ended with sea temperatures returning to normal (Figure 8).   Figure 8 - Sea temperatures are back to normal (NOAA) Looking forward, according to the NOAA, there is a 65% chance that La Niña conditions may develop in the next few months. So investors looking to bet on a colder/wetter than normal winter season requiring more heating may want to keep a close eye on upcoming NOAA reports. Conclusion The bullish case for the BOIL ETF recently ended in June, as positive seasonality and El Niño conditions both concluded. Looking forward, I believe bullish investors need to be patient and wait for winter fuel demand speculation to start in late August/September before making another bet on BOIL.  This upcoming winter season could be fruitful, as there is currently a 65% chance of La Niña conditions developing for the upcoming winter season. Typically, La Niña winters are colder and wetter than normal, which could increase fuel demand.
