The <strong>Dow Jones Industrial Average</strong>, <strong>S&amp;P 500</strong>, and <strong>Nasdaq Composite</strong> all entered a bear market and produced their worst full-year returns since 2008.</p><p>But not all stocks have fared equally. Some former high-flying stocks have been taken the woodshed, with losses easily exceeding 90%. Yet for a select group of downtrodden highfliers, optimism remains -- at least among billionaire investors.</p><p>No later than 45 days following the end of a quarter, fund managers overseeing at least $100 million in assets under management are required to file Form 13F with the Securities and Exchange Commission. A 13F provides a snapshot of what Wall Street&#39;s brightest money managers have been buying and selling. According to the latest round of 13Fs, three former highfliers, which are down between 92% and 99%, have been popular buys among billionaire money managers.</p><h2>Teladoc Health: Down 92% from its all-time high</h2><p>The first beaten-down former highflier that billionaires haven&#39;t been able to stop buying of late is telehealth kingpin <strong>Teladoc Health</strong>. After hitting an all-time high of $308 in February 2021, shares of the company have plummeted all the way back to $25 and change.</p><p>Despite this tumble, billionaires Israel Englander of Millennium Management and Ken Griffin of Citadel Advisors have been active buyers. Millennium added more than 2.3 million shares of Teladoc during the fourth quarter, while Citadel increased its existing stake by more than 30% with a nearly 316,000-share purchase.</p><p>The reason Teladoc shed more than 90% of its value primarily has to do with it grossly overpaying for applied health signals company Livongo Health in late 2020. Last year, Teladoc took three sizable writedowns tied to this $18.5 billion deal, resulting in a full-year loss of <em>$84.60 per share</em>! Just over $83 of this per-share loss is from impairment charges. </p><p>In hindsight, Teladoc grossly overpaid for Livongo. However, the bright side that is that it took its lumps and correctly recognized that it would be virtually impossible to recoup the goodwill associated with this deal. By taking hefty non-cash impairment charges in 2022, Teladoc should have much cleaner operating comparisons moving forward.</p><p>What&#39;s more, Teladoc Health has shown that it&#39;s not just a fad stock that benefited from the COVID-19 pandemic. While virtual visit demand certainly picked up during the pandemic, average annual sales growth in the six years leading up to declaration of a global pandemic was 74%. That&#39;s not a fluke. Rather, it&#39;s representative of an ongoing shift in personalized care.</p><p>Telemedicine is making it easier than ever to connect patients with physicians, as well as allowing physicians to keep closer tabs on their chronically ill patients. The expectation is we&#39;ll see improved patient outcomes and less money coming out of the pockets of health insurers. Anything that saves health insurers money is something they&#39;re going to promote and support.</p><p>Lastly, don&#39;t overlook the long-term potential of Livongo Health, even if Teladoc overpaid to acquire the company. Livongo&#39;s chronic care program enrollment grew by a healthy 16% in 2022 and now tops 1 million. Cross-selling opportunities between the two platforms, coupled with mindful spending, can help move Teladoc closer to profitability in 2023.</p><h2>Aurora Cannabis: Down 99% from its all-time high</h2><p>The second former highflier that&#39;s been absolutely decimated, yet continues to draw attention from billionaire investors, is Canadian marijuana stock <strong>Aurora Cannabis</strong>. On a split-adjusted basis, shares of Aurora have plunged more than 99% from their all-time high.</p><p>In spite of its poor performance, Aurora Cannabis had two notable billionaire buyers during the fourth quarter. The aforementioned Israel Englander of Millennium Management scooped up roughly 6.24 million shares, while billionaire Jim Simons of Renaissance Technologies purchased almost 1.68 million shares.</p><p>The biggest issue for Aurora Cannabis is that it grossly overestimated domestic and international demand. At one point in 2019, Aurora owned 15 production facilities that, if fully developed, would have easily topped 600,000 kilos of annual cannabis output. Comparatively, Canadians consumed an estimated 391,000 kilos of weed all of last year.  Aurora&#39;s projections weren&#39;t even close, and the company was forced to write down billions of dollars in goodwill tied to multiple overpriced acquisitions.</p><p>Another sizable problem is that Canadian consumers have favored value-based dried cannabis flower, rather than higher-margin derivatives, such as oils, vapes, and edibles. While Aurora has had modest success supplying medical cannabis domestically and abroad, its role in the recreational marijuana market has been nothing short of a disappointment.</p><p>Profits have also remained elusive for Aurora Cannabis. Even though the company finally made good on its bid to reach positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), and it&#39;s delivered approximately $340 million in annualized cost savings from where things stood in February 2020, adjusted EBITDA isn&#39;t the same as a profit. Through the first six months of fiscal 2023, Aurora has an operating loss of 125.4 million Canadian dollars ($93.8 million U.S.) and doesn&#39;t appear to be particularly close to recurring profitability. </p><p>But arguably worst of all, Aurora Cannabis is a serial diluter. Since the company continues to lose money, it&#39;s been selling stock via registered offerings and at-the-market issuances for nearly a decade. Between June 30, 2014 and Dec. 30, 2022, Aurora&#39;s split-adjusted outstanding share count has risen from about 1.3 million to just shy of 341 million.  Suffice it to say, there&#39;s little reason to be optimistic about Aurora Cannabis stock.</p><h2>Novavax: Down 97% from its all-time high</h2><p>The third former beaten-down highflier that billionaire investors can&#39;t stop buying is biotech stock <strong>Novavax</strong>. After hitting nearly $332 on an intra-day basis a little over two years ago, shares of Novavax have shed 97% of their value.</p><p>Yet even with this poor performance, select billionaire money managers have been willing to take the plunge. This includes Jim Simons&#39; Renaissance Technologies, which purchased 1.94 million shares during the fourth quarter, Israel Englander&#39;s Millennium Management, which bought 1.02 million shares, and John Overdeck&#39;s and David Siegel&#39;s Two Sigma Investments, which opened a 1.01-million-share position.</p><p>Novavax gained its fame during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company&#39;s phase 3 clinical study involving NVX-CoV2373 (known as Nuvaxovid internationally) was one of only three COVID-19 vaccines to reach the psychologically important 90% vaccine efficacy level. Superficially, it looked like a slam-dunk to become a key player in fighting the pandemic.</p><p>However, two big miscues caused Novavax to miss out on most of the proverbial low-hanging fruit (i.e., initial series vaccines in high-margin developed markets). The company delayed its filing for emergency-use authorization in the U.S. on numerous occasions, and it ran into manufacturing issues when trying to ramp production. The end result for Novavax was $1.98 billion in peak annual sales when its peers were netting closer to $20 billion annually from COVID-19 vaccines.</p><p>Perhaps the biggest dilemma for Novavax now is whether the company can keep the lights on. Although Novavax would appear to have plenty of cash on hand to navigate near-term turbulence, ongoing arbitration with vaccine relief organization Gavi could lead to the company having to return $700 million.  This arbitration is what coerced the company to issue a going concern warning with its fourth-quarter operating results, despite ending 2022 with $1.34 billion in cash and cash equivalents. </p><p>If Novavax makes it through 2023 and receives a favorable arbitration ruling, its pipeline could be intriguing. Even with the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic in the rearview mirror, the potential for combination vaccines (influenza/COVID-19) is meaningful. The aforementioned Israel Englander of Millennium Management scooped up roughly 6.24 million shares, while billionaire Jim Simons of Renaissance Technologies purchased almost 1.68 million shares.The biggest issue for Aurora Cannabis is that it grossly overestimated domestic and international demand. At one point in 2019, Aurora owned 15 production facilities that, if fully developed, would have easily topped 600,000 kilos of annual cannabis output. Comparatively, Canadians consumed an estimated 391,000 kilos of weed all of last year.  Aurora's projections weren't even close, and the company was forced to write down billions of dollars in goodwill tied to multiple overpriced acquisitions.Another sizable problem is that Canadian consumers have favored value-based dried cannabis flower, rather than higher-margin derivatives, such as oils, vapes, and edibles. While Aurora has had modest success supplying medical cannabis domestically and abroad, its role in the recreational marijuana market has been nothing short of a disappointment.Profits have also remained elusive for Aurora Cannabis. Even though the company finally made good on its bid to reach positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), and it's delivered approximately $340 million in annualized cost savings from where things stood in February 2020, adjusted EBITDA isn't the same as a profit. Through the first six months of fiscal 2023, Aurora has an operating loss of 125.4 million Canadian dollars ($93.8 million U.S.) and doesn't appear to be particularly close to recurring profitability. But arguably worst of all, Aurora Cannabis is a serial diluter. Since the company continues to lose money, it's been selling stock via registered offerings and at-the-market issuances for nearly a decade. Between June 30, 2014 and Dec. 30, 2022, Aurora's split-adjusted outstanding share count has risen from about 1.3 million to just shy of 341 million.  Suffice it to say, there's little reason to be optimistic about Aurora Cannabis stock.Novavax: Down 97% from its all-time highThe third former beaten-down highflier that billionaire investors can't stop buying is biotech stock Novavax. After hitting nearly $332 on an intra-day basis a little over two years ago, shares of Novavax have shed 97% of their value.Yet even with this poor performance, select billionaire money managers have been willing to take the plunge. This includes Jim Simons' Renaissance Technologies, which purchased 1.94 million shares during the fourth quarter, Israel Englander's Millennium Management, which bought 1.02 million shares, and John Overdeck's and David Siegel's Two Sigma Investments, which opened a 1.01-million-share position.Novavax gained its fame during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company's phase 3 clinical study involving NVX-CoV2373 (known as Nuvaxovid internationally) was one of only three COVID-19 vaccines to reach the psychologically important 90% vaccine efficacy level. Superficially, it looked like a slam-dunk to become a key player in fighting the pandemic.However, two big miscues caused Novavax to miss out on most of the proverbial low-hanging fruit (i.e., initial series vaccines in high-margin developed markets). The company delayed its filing for emergency-use authorization in the U.S. on numerous occasions, and it ran into manufacturing issues when trying to ramp production. The end result for Novavax was $1.98 billion in peak annual sales when its peers were netting closer to $20 billion annually from COVID-19 vaccines.Perhaps the biggest dilemma for Novavax now is whether the company can keep the lights on. Although Novavax would appear to have plenty of cash on hand to navigate near-term turbulence, ongoing arbitration with vaccine relief organization Gavi could lead to the company having to return $700 million.  This arbitration is what coerced the company to issue a going concern warning with its fourth-quarter operating results, despite ending 2022 with $1.34 billion in cash and cash equivalents. If Novavax makes it through 2023 and receives a favorable arbitration ruling, its pipeline could be intriguing. Even with the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic in the rearview mirror, the potential for combination vaccines (influenza/COVID-19) is meaningful. But Dow Jones retailers <b>Walmart</b>(WMT) and <b>Home Depot</b>(HD) guided low.</p><h2>Stock Market Rally Under Pressure</h2><p>The stock market saw further losses, with the major indexes breaking below key moving averages on fears that the Fed will have to be even more aggressive. <b>Nvidia</b>(NVDA) was among several big earnings winners, but overall leading stocks faltered with the market. The uptrend is under pressure. Treasury yields jumped to their highest levels in months, with the 10-year rate nearly up to 4%.</p><h2>Economic Data Too Hot</h2><p>The last batch of economic reports for January packed a wallop — and it wasn&#39;t just the inflation data. Personal spending surged 1.8%. Adjusted for inflation, spending rose the most since March 2021. Even new home sales took off, unexpectedly jumping 7% to a 670,000 annual rate. Yet those bursts of activity were fueled by temporary factors: unusually warm weather, an 8.7% Social Security cost-of-living boost and moderating mortgage rates that have already reversed higher.</p><p>But the sharpest monthly price increases since last June could leave a lasting imprint on Fed policy. The PCE price index and core PCE, stripping out food and energy, both rose 0.6% on the month. Even worse, that came on top of upward revisions to December price increases. As a result, the steadily declining annual inflation rates unexpectedly reversed higher. The PCE inflation rate ticked up to 5.4%, while core PCE inflation edged up to 4.7%.</p><p>The hot inflation data also extended to core nonhousing services, with a monthly 0.6% rise, the fastest since November 2021. This is the category of spending that Fed chair Jerome Powell sees as most important to the inflation outlook.</p><p>After the latest batch of data, markets are now pricing in roughly one-third odds that the Fed will hike its key rate by a half-point on March 22.</p><h2>Nvidia Touts AI Business</h2><p>The graphics-chip maker beat Wall Street&#39;s estimates for its fiscal fourth quarter and guided higher for the current period. But<b>Nvidia</b>(NVDA) revenue and earnings fell 21% and 33%, respectively, in the quarter ended Jan. 29, as gaming chip sales remained weak. But investors focused on CEO Jensen Huang&#39;s comments that artificial intelligence technology is at an inflection point. Netflix also promoted new cloud-based AI services. NVDA stock rocketed after the report.</p><h2>Walmart, Home Depot Guide Low</h2><p>The big-box Dow Jones retailers both offered cautious outlooks for the year ahead. <b>Walmart</b>(WMT) easily beat Q4 EPS views with revenue also topping. <b>Home Depot</b>(HD) topped profit targets but revenue fell just short. The home improvement giant said it&#39;ll spend an extra $1 billion to boost pay for front-line workers. WMT stock rose Tuesday on earnings, but fell for the week. Home Depot fell sharply, weighing on <b>Lowe&#39;s</b>(LOW) and several other housing-related retailers. However, <b>Floor &amp; Decor</b>(FND) reported a 45% EPS gain, beating views, while the flooring retailer&#39;s 15% revenue gain just missed. FND jumped Friday.</p><h2>Toll Brothers Tops, Remains Upbeat</h2><p>The luxury homebuilder reported fiscal Q1 EPS climbed 37% while revenue fell less than 1% to $1.78 billion. <b>Toll Brothers</b>(TOL) delivered 1,826 units, near the high end of its guidance. It expects to deliver 2,050-2,150 units in Q2 with an average home price of $980,000-$1,000,000. For the full year, Toll predicts 8,000-9,000 units delivered with selling prices of $965,000-$985,000. Meanwhile, overall new- and existing-home sales have trended sharply lower amid higher mortgage rates.</p><h2>Tesla China Registrations Fall Again</h2><p><b>Tesla</b>(TSLA) insurance registrations in China fell to 5,913 in the week ended Feb. 19, vs. 6,963 in the prior week and 8,643 before that. That could reflect waning demand after an initial burst on price cuts. However, exports could be limiting Tesla EVs for local delivery. The next few weeks should clarify. Meanwhile,<b>BYD</b>(BYDDF) reported 37,026 registrations, up 18%.<b>Li Auto</b>(LI),<b>Nio</b>(NIO) and<b>XPeng</b>(XPEV) showed modest week-to-week gains.</p><h2>Alibaba Beats, But Price War Hits Sector</h2><p><b>Alibaba</b>(BABA) beat estimates on the top and bottom lines, as the China e-commerce giant fought through softer demand and supply chain woes. The uptrend is under pressure. Treasury yields jumped to their highest levels in months, with the 10-year rate nearly up to 4%.Economic Data Too HotThe last batch of economic reports for January packed a wallop — and it wasn't just the inflation data. Personal spending surged 1.8%. Adjusted for inflation, spending rose the most since March 2021. Even new home sales took off, unexpectedly jumping 7% to a 670,000 annual rate. Yet those bursts of activity were fueled by temporary factors: unusually warm weather, an 8.7% Social Security cost-of-living boost and moderating mortgage rates that have already reversed higher.But the sharpest monthly price increases since last June could leave a lasting imprint on Fed policy. The PCE price index and core PCE, stripping out food and energy, both rose 0.6% on the month. Even worse, that came on top of upward revisions to December price increases. As a result, the steadily declining annual inflation rates unexpectedly reversed higher. Then the whole market went south and the bear market really began to growl.</p><p>In any regard, the steep decline has many investors wondering what the next trillion-dollar company is and when we’ll see it.</p><p>There’s no way to know for sure — particularly on the “when” part of the equation — but here are the stocks that seem most likely to get there.</p><p><b>Nvidia (NVDA)</b></p><p><b>Nvidia</b>(NASDAQ: <b>NVDA</b>) was not all that far away from a $1 trillion market cap. At one point in December 2021, the company had a valuation north of $800 billion. It would have taken about a 20% rally for Nvidia to get there in the prior cycle.</p><p>While the stock went on to lose two-thirds of its value from peak to trough, it’s been on a robust rally since. Shares have rallied more than 100% off the recent low as investors continue to pile in.</p><p>Part of it seems like momentum driving the action, while some of it feels like “FOMO,” as investors fear missing out on the “next big stock” and the AI revolution, which Nvidia is helping to drive.</p><p>Because of its role in current technology, the company should continue to do quite well. The way CEO Jensen Huang positions the company in future technology trends <i>before</i> they become hot is why Nvidia has the potential to be one of the next trillion-dollar companies.</p><p><b>Tesla (TSLA)</b></p><p><b>Tesla</b>(NASDAQ: <b>TSLA</b>) is an easy and obvious name when looking for the next trillion-dollar company. Tesla should be on everyone’s list for the potential to hit this milestone, given that it has already done so before.</p><p>In 2021, Tesla sported a market cap north of $1.2 trillion. As recently as mid-September, shares were down just 24% from the all-time high. Then things came to an abrupt halt.</p><p>CEO Elon Musk bought Twitter, which only fueled Tesla’s decline as shares fell in five straight months and cratered more than 67% from the August high to the January low. When it finally bottomed near $100, Tesla stock was 75% below its all-time high.</p><p>Should it ever get there again — currently at $414.50 — it will represent a gain of just over 300% from the low.</p><p>While a global recession is the obvious risk, the company’s automotive and energy components continue to drive growth. For example, analysts expect 27% and 31% growth in 2023 and 2024, respectively.</p><p><b>Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B, BRK-A)</b></p><p>Last but not least, we have <b>Berkshire Hathaway</b>(NYSE: <b><u>BRK-A</u></b>, NYSE: <b><u>BRK-B</u></b>). However, there’re two main risks with this pick as the next trillion-dollar company. That are Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger.</p><p>While those two money managers may be the firm’s biggest assets, there are worries that when they are gone, they will turn into Berkshire’s biggest liabilities.</p><p>However, Buffett and Munger have built Berkshire into a powerhouse, as it has amassed a $700 billion market cap. At its highs, it sported a market cap of $800 billion. I believe Buffett &amp; Co. have built a system that will allow Berkshire to continue flourishing long after they have stepped down.</p><p>That goes for Berkshire’s impressive list of portfolio managers, but also for the company’s impressive investments. Beyond the initial sales of its surgical systems, the company makes recurring revenue from services such as medical provider training on how to use its products, customer support, and replacement tools and instruments that accompany its systems.</p><p>Over the past 10 years, Intuitive Surgical has witnessed its revenue and earnings grow by respective clips of 175% and 97%.
