Congratulations, Tiger. I like your platform much. To imagine what your platform will be like in 10 years, I have to considerthe state the world will be in at that time. This is an impossible task, but overall I am a little concerned about the situation the world is in and what seems to be the trajectory or developmental path. Of course I have a limited perspective, but there seem to be quite significant challenges ahead, and at this time what I perceive of societies (and living in Europe, my focus is in the EU and US) I don't really see that the qualities are growing in societies that will enable to deal with the challenges. With the latest news being of the good variety, some may be thinking now’s the time to go bullish on NIO.</p><p>After all, in contrast to my past skepticism about the China-based electric vehicle maker experiencing a resurgence in growth during the back half of 2022, the latest delivery data (more below) signals that this may just well be happening.</p><p>Growth reacceleration notwithstanding, there’s something else in play that may limit NIO’s ability to hold steady at current prices (just under $11 per share). Much less, make a move back to higher price levels.</p><p>As I will explain in further detail below, it remains too early to shift one’s view on this widely followed EV play. Instead of “getting in early” on a recovery, those buying today could fall for a trap.</p><h2 id=\"id_3309793222\">Is NIO Stock Back in the Growth Zone? Not So Fast</h2><p>At the start of September, Nio reported its monthly delivery data for the preceding month. During the month of August, the EV maker delivered 19,329 vehicles. This represented an 81% increase in deliveries compared to the prior year’s month.</p><p>It was also the second month in a row that the company’s delivery volume well above levels reported both last year and earlier this year. This resurgence in deliveries may not be enough for Nio to hit its very ambitious 2023 sales target (250,000 vehicles), but it is by all means a step in the right direction.</p><p>If this level of monthly deliveries keeps up, reaching annualized sales of 250,000 (or more) is well within-reach. Or is it? Again, despite these strong numbers, I remain skeptical that a continued recovery for the company, and for NIO stock, is in store.</p><p>For one, much of this sales growth resurgence may be because of new vehicle launches in recent months, like the launch of the ES6 electric SUV this summer. Following an initial strong start, sales could cool off. A worsening of the Chinese economic slowdown may also affect future deliveries/sales.</p><h2 id=\"id_3827979175\">Falling Margins are a Concern</h2><p>Besides the questionable prospects of the company’s sales resurgence continuing, it’s also telling that NIO stock experienced just a brief uptick higher following the August delivery numbers release.</p><p>Those bullish on shares may think this discrepancy works to their advantage, but to me it suggests that the market believes something else counters that positive.</p><p>That would be Nio’s falling gross margins. Last quarter, vehicle margins fell to 6.2%. Compare that to the prior year’s quarter, when vehicle margins came in at 16.7%.</p><p>Although one can chalk this up to falling sales during the period, irrespective of whether the deliveries resurgence carries on, or if sales dip again, falling margins could continue.</p><p>Why? Back in June, Nio joined in on the Chinese EV price war. This may also contribute to the recent sales resurgence, yet it may mean as well that Nio’s vehicle margins will not improve much this quarter.</p><p>Without significant vehicle margin improvement, chances are that the company will keep struggling to narrow net losses/make a move towards consistent profitability. This leaves NIO more likely to continue being on a downwards trajectory.</p><h2 id=\"id_2417414498\">Bottom Line: Still a Sell</h2><p>NIO may on the surface seem like a prime “buy the dip” opportunity at lower prices, but the market doesn’t often mis-price stocks, especially high-profile stocks like this one.</p><p>Mr. Market has good reason to stay in “show me” mode with this EV play. The jury’s still out whether the aforementioned sales resurgence will lose steam or set to continue. The same goes with the company’s vehicle margins.</p><p>Taking this into account, now’s not the time to go contrarian. As the excitement (albeit muted) about last month’s vehicle sales dissipates, margin worries could intensify again. This may be enough to push NIO back down toward its 52-week low ($7 per share).</p><p>If delivery numbers for this month fall short of rising expectations, shares could dip to even lower prices. With the latest news being of the good variety, some may be thinking now’s the time to go bullish on NIO.After all, in contrast to my past skepticism about the China-based electric vehicle maker experiencing a resurgence in growth during the back half of 2022, the latest delivery data (more below) signals that this may just well be happening.Growth reacceleration notwithstanding, there’s something else in play that may limit NIO’s ability to hold steady at current prices (just under $11 per share). Much less, make a move back to higher price levels.As I will explain in further detail below, it remains too early to shift one’s view on this widely followed EV play. Instead of “getting in early” on a recovery, those buying today could fall for a trap.Is NIO Stock Back in the Growth Zone? Not So FastAt the start of September, Nio reported its monthly delivery data for the preceding month. During the month of August, the EV maker delivered 19,329 vehicles. This represented an 81% increase in deliveries compared to the prior year’s month.It was also the second month in a row that the company’s delivery volume well above levels reported both last year and earlier this year. This resurgence in deliveries may not be enough for Nio to hit its very ambitious 2023 sales target (250,000 vehicles), but it is by all means a step in the right direction.If this level of monthly deliveries keeps up, reaching annualized sales of 250,000 (or more) is well within-reach. Or is it? Again, despite these strong numbers, I remain skeptical that a continued recovery for the company, and for NIO stock, is in store.For one, much of this sales growth resurgence may be because of new vehicle launches in recent months, like the launch of the ES6 electric SUV this summer. Following an initial strong start, sales could cool off. A worsening of the Chinese economic slowdown may also affect future deliveries/sales.Falling Margins are a ConcernBesides the questionable prospects of the company’s sales resurgence continuing, it’s also telling that NIO stock experienced just a brief uptick higher following the August delivery numbers release.Those bullish on shares may think this discrepancy works to their advantage, but to me it suggests that the market believes something else counters that positive.That would be Nio’s falling gross margins. Last quarter, vehicle margins fell to 6.2%. Compare that to the prior year’s quarter, when vehicle margins came in at 16.7%.Although one can chalk this up to falling sales during the period, irrespective of whether the deliveries resurgence carries on, or if sales dip again, falling margins could continue.Why? Back in June, Nio joined in on the Chinese EV price war. This may also contribute to the recent sales resurgence, yet it may mean as well that Nio’s vehicle margins will not improve much this quarter.Without significant vehicle margin improvement, chances are that the company will keep struggling to narrow net losses/make a move towards consistent profitability. This leaves NIO more likely to continue being on a downwards trajectory.Bottom Line: Still a SellNIO may on the surface seem like a prime “buy the dip” opportunity at lower prices, but the market doesn’t often mis-price stocks, especially high-profile stocks like this one.Mr. Market has good reason to stay in “show me” mode with this EV play. The jury’s still out whether the aforementioned sales resurgence will lose steam or set to continue. The same goes with the company’s vehicle margins.Taking this into account, now’s not the time to go contrarian. As the excitement (albeit muted) about last month’s vehicle sales dissipates, margin worries could intensify again. This may be enough to push NIO back down toward its 52-week low ($7 per share).If delivery numbers for this month fall short of rising expectations, shares could dip to even lower prices. The healthcare stock remains around its 52-week low, and its price-to-earnings multiple of less than 8 suggests more than just a healthy dose of skepticism from investors. The company benefited from its highly effective and popular COVID-19 vaccine, which helped it generate record-breaking sales last year, topping more than $100 billion.</p><p>Investors are now concerned about Pfizer&#39;s future because it may be a long time before it gets back to those levels again. The government is no longer loading up on vaccines now that the public health emergency relating to COVID is over.</p><p>But Pfizer is already looking past that and has been involved in multiple acquisitions over the past few years in an effort to set up its business for longer-term growth to offset the impact of declining COVID revenue, as well as an inevitable drop in sales as multiple drugs lose patent protection this decade.</p><p>Pfizer&#39;s biggest plans involve expanding its presence in oncology. In March, the drugmaker announced that it wants to buy biotech <strong><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SGEN\">Seagen</a> </strong>for $43 billion. Prior to that, Pfizer closed on acquisitions of Global Blood Therapeutics, Biohaven Pharmaceuticals, Arena Pharmaceuticals, and ReViral in 2022.</p><p>Pfizer is coming off a couple of years of strong free cash flow generation, which has bolstered its financial position. And as of April 2, the company still had around $20 billion in cash and short-term investments on its books, meaning that it still has the ability to pursue more deals if necessary.</p><p>Robust financial resources ensure that the company&#39;s quest to get stronger and more diversified will continue. The Fed chief also said a recent run-up in long-term Treasury yields, if they persist, could lessen the need for further hikes “at the margin,” echoing his <u>colleagues</u> and underscoring the importance of tightening financial conditions to the rate outlook over the coming months.</p><p>“Given the uncertainties and risks, and how far we have come, the committee is proceeding carefully,” Powell said Thursday at the Economic Club of New York. “We will make decisions about the extent of additional policy firming and how long policy will remain restrictive based on the totality of the incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks.”</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Yields on two-year Treasuries declined after Powell spoke, while 10-year yields pared an increase that pushed them near the 5% mark. The dollar fell against a basket of major currencies, and the S&amp;P 500 index of stocks, after multiple twists and turns, fell.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">“For November, he has clearly sent a signal of pause,” said Laura Rosner, partner at Macropolicy Perspectives LLC. “He expects the economy to cool down in the fourth quarter, and yields are doing some of the work for them.”</p><h3 id=\"id_3240693887\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Protesters Disrupt</h3><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Before beginning his remarks, Powell was briefly escorted out of the room after protesters interrupted the New York event. The demonstrators, who were standing arm in arm, were chanting “end fossil finance” and were forcibly removed from the stage before Powell returned.</p><p>Officials left their policy rate unchanged last month in a range of 5.25% to 5.5% and their forecasts showed 12 of 19 officials wanted one more hike this year. Powell was careful not to rule out the possibility of further tightening in his remarks.</p><p>“Additional evidence of persistently above-trend growth, or that tightness in the labor market is no longer easing, could put further progress on inflation at risk and could warrant further tightening of monetary policy,” he said.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Speaking during a question-and-answer session with Bloomberg TV’s David Westin, Powell added, “I think the evidence is not that policy is too tight right now.”</p><p>Core inflation, excluding volatile food and energy prices, has decelerated to just below 4% on an annual basis and just below 3% on a three-month annualized measure.</p><h3 id=\"id_2485861330\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Economic Strength</h3><p style=\"text-align: start;\">At the same time, recent economic data showed US retail sales exceeded forecasts and industrial production strengthened in September, while nonfarm payroll gains have averaged 266,000 over the past three months, a robust pace.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">While three- and six-month measures of core inflation are running below 3%, Powell warned short-term measures are often volatile. “In any case, inflation is still too high, and a few months of good data are only the beginning of what it will take to build confidence that inflation is moving down sustainably toward our goal,” he said.</p><p>Powell also said there’s evidence the Fed’s rate hikes are putting downward pressure on the economy, and said “there may still be meaningful tightening in the pipeline.”</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">He also cited key risks from geopolitical tensions, which he called “highly elevated.” He said he found the attack on Israel to be “horrifying, as is the prospect for more loss of innocent lives.”</p><h3 id=\"id_710769406\" style=\"text-align: start;\">‘Further Softening’</h3><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The Fed chair said there are signs the labor market is cooling, though he repeated that a “sustainable” return to 2% inflation “is likely to require a period of below-trend growth and some further softening in labor market conditions.”</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The speed of the Powell tightening campaign has been the fastest since former Chair Paul Volcker unleashed his attack on inflation in the late 1970s.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">An abrupt rise in longer-term Treasury yields since July has prompted some Fed officials, such as Vice Chair Philip Jefferson, to focus more on overall financial conditions as they consider their next move. Two-year Treasury yields rose to a 17-year high Tuesday, while 10-year notes are near their peak for the year.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Powell said the recent surge is mostly due to rising term premiums, detailing several factors that could be causing the increased yield demand from investors, including the central bank’s quantitative-tightening program.</p><p>“They’re revising their view about the overall strength of the economy and thinking even longer term it may require higher rates,” Powell said. “There may be a heightened focus on fiscal deficits. In fact, it&#39;s so far ahead of the pack that it could be making history right before our eyes.</p><p>After Nvidia joined the trillion-dollar market cap club earlier this year, it was natural for some to believe the hype was more about the narrative of its AI roadmap and less about its underlying fundamentals. However, the company followed up its stellar fiscal Q1 earnings report with an even bigger blowout in Q2. </p><p>Up over 200% year to date, Nvidia is indeed expensive, even for a growth stock. Nonetheless, after understanding its latest results, you&#39;ll see now is still a good opportunity to initiate a long-term position. </p><h2 id=\"id_2699977936\">The poster child of AI</h2><p>For its fiscal 2024 Q1 (ended April 30), Nvidia reported total revenue of $7.2 billion. While this was good for 19% growth from the prior quarter, it represented a year-over-year decline of 13%. Yet, since the company published those results in late May, Nvidia stock is up almost 50%. Why?</p><p>Well, when analyzing the segment operating results, investors learned that Nvidia achieved record revenue in its data center business during the quarter. Although this was encouraging to see, management&#39;s outlook for the next quarter was what really took investors by surprise.</p><p>During the earnings call, management guided for fiscal Q2 (ended July 30) revenue to surge 64% year over year to $11.0 billion. Even more impressive, the company ended up blowing past its own expectations and clocked in with $13.5 billion in revenue for the quarter. Nvidia set another record in its data center business, which accounted for roughly three-quarters of the top line.</p><p>It&#39;s pretty obvious that Nvidia&#39;s AI product suite is in high demand. But given the staggering results highlighted above, it&#39;s hard to imagine how much better things can get. Right? Not so fast.</p><h2 id=\"id_590103908\">What&#39;s next?</h2><p>If the financial picture above is not enough to raise your eyebrows, consider Nvidia&#39;s fiscal Q3 guidance, which calls for revenue to climb 170% to $16.0 billion. And to make things even better, Nvidia is financing all of this growth profitably. So far this year, the company has generated $8.7 billion of free cash flow, quadrupling its tally from the year-ago period.</p><p>But Nvidia faces two challenges. The first is waning demand. Over the last year, many companies, particularly in the tech sector, resorted to layoffs to reduce expenses. Because interest rates remain high (raising the cost of borrowing) and because inflation lingers above the Federal Reserve&#39;s 2% target, I suspect that companies across all industry sectors will be watching their expenses and cash flow carefully. Nvidia&#39;s premium AI products may have to compete with cheaper alternatives.</p><p>Nvidia also faces a challenge from the U.S. government. Because of concerns about national security, the government has become cautious about making advanced semiconductor chips available to some nations, including China and Russia.</p><p>These could eventually become serious challenges, but it&#39;s too early to tell what the long-run implications will be for Nvidia. So far, the affected regions have not affected the momentum Nvidia is seeing with its global demand, and management doesn&#39;t seem overly concerned about this threat to the company&#39;s growth, at least in the near term.</p><h2 id=\"id_2945270871\">Should you buy the stock?</h2><p>Following Nvidia&#39;s fiscal Q2 results, Wall Street analysts did not hold back with their price targets. <strong>Citigroup</strong> and <strong>Morgan Stanley</strong> both have a $630 price target for the stock, which implies roughly 40% upside from current trading levels. <strong>Bank of America</strong> and <strong>Truist</strong> are slightly more optimistic with respective price targets of $650 and $668. However, Rosenblatt Securities takes the crown with its $1,100 price target.</p><p>Although it&#39;s nice to see broad optimism on the Street, the company&#39;s valuation is raising eyebrows too.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a39cf585ff2171ca4e5f80217142bf34\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"565\"/></p><p>Data by YCharts.</p><p>Nvidia&#39;s price-to-sales and price-to-free-cash-flow multiples sit far above those for peer companies like <strong>AMD</strong>, <strong>Qualcomm</strong>, and <strong>Taiwan Semiconductor</strong>. But the graphs also show that these multiples have dropped considerably recently as its data center growth plays catch up.</p><p>The best chance for an investor to average down in price is a material miss in earnings or a considerable market pullback. However, neither of these things is guaranteed.
