Nvidia and AMD made headlines on Monday as each chipmaker unveiled their widely anticipated latest artificial intelligence-infused offerings at the Consumer Electronics Show.
"It has been an extraordinary journey, and an extraordinary year," Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said during the keynote, likely a reference to the company's recent financial and operational success.
Huang noted that machine learning has changed how every application will be built, and the possibilities beyond, as he introduced the company's newest AI-infused GeForce GPU, the GeForce RTX 50 series, which is part of the RTX Blackwell family.
The GPU includes 92B transistors, 4,000 TOPs, 4 petaflops of AI, 380 ray tracing teraflops, 125 shader, and 1.8TB memory from Micron, Huang said.
The RTX 5070 costs $549, significantly lower than the $1,599 that the RTX 4090 series costs, Huang said. Other members of the RTX 50 series include the 5090 for $1,999 the 5080 for $999 and the 5070Ti for $749.
The new GeForce GPU cards will be available from January, Huang added.
Huang also noted that the company's Blackwell line of AI accelerators is in full production and is being used by all the major cloud service providers and a number of PC makers.
Each Grace Blackwell NVLink72 GB200 networking chip includes 72 Blackwell GPUs, 576 memory chips, 130T transistors and 2,592 Grace CPU cores, Huang added.
Huang also showed off a new family of Nvidia Nemotron models based on Meta Platforms (META) Llama models, the Llama Nemotron Nano, Llama Nemotron Super and Llama Nemotron Ultra to help further improve AI agents. AI agents are likely to be a multi-trillion dollar industry, Huang added.
The company also took the wraps off Nvidia Cosmos, the world's first physical AI model and can be used to boost robotics, Huang said. It is trained on 20M hours of video on physical dynamic items, and uses CUDA, and it is now open licensed on GitHub, Huang added.
In addition, Huang said that Toyota and Nvidia would partner to work on Toyota's newest autonomous vehicles, with Huang positing that autonomous vehicles will be the first multi-trillion dollar robotics industry.
AMD
Not to be outdone, the Dr. Lisa Su-led AMD unveiled several offerings of its own, including its new AMD Ryzen 9900X3D and 9950X3D CPUs. The new Ryzen 9950X3D is aimed at gamers and content creators, AMD said in a statement.
It has 16 cores and is based on AMD's Zen 5 architecture and is approximately 8% faster on a number of names, including Hogwarts Legacy, than AMD's Ryzen 7 7950X3D CPU, AMD said.
AMD also showed off the second-generation handheld gaming PC processor – the Ryzen Z2.
“Gaming has become the one of the biggest forms of entertainment around the world, and with titles becoming more immersive and demanding, having the right hardware and software is critical for the best player experience,” AMD executive Jack Huynh said.
In addition to the aforementioned gaming-centric Ryzen offerings, AMD showed off several new AI offerings as part of the Ryzen line: the AMD Ryzen AI Max, AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series and AMD Ryzen 200 Series processors. The company also announced Pro versions of each processor.
These new CPUs will help power the next version of AI PCs from companies like HP, Asus and Lenovo, as the Ryzen AI 300 Series is based on AMD's Zen-5 architecture, while the Ryzen 200 Series is based on the Zen-4 architecture.
“With the next generation of AI-enabled processors, we are proliferating AI to devices everywhere, and bringing the power of a workstation to thin and light laptops,” Huynh said in a separate release.
In addition, AMD announced that its CPUs will be used by Dell Technologies (DELL) in PCs sold to businesses, marking the first time for the collaboration. (Dell already uses AMD CPUs for PCs sold to consumers.)
Dell has mostly used chips from Intel for its enterprise-centric PCs.
