It follows a broad sell-off, sending the index to 8159.10 on the final day of trading in 2024 as investors booked profits.That sell-off meant the Australian sharemarket’s annual increase was lower than 2023, even with the financial and technology sectors experiencing double-digit increases – 28.2 per cent and 49.5 per cent respectively.That meant the ASX 200 rose 7.5 per cent in 2024, compared to a 7.8 per cent gain in the year earlier. It had been on track to book its highest gain since 2021, when shares rose 13 per cent during the COVID-19 pandemic.The Australian dollar hit a two-year low, below US62¢, having skidded more than 9 per cent in 2024, the worst annual decline in six years. The currency is on shaky ground due to a slowing Chinese economy. A stronger US dollar since Donald Trump won the presidential elections and interest rate differentials between Australia and the US have also pushed out the gap between the currencies.Financial markets expect the Reserve Bank of Australia to start cutting rates in the first half of this year, even as the US central bank keeps rates higher as inflation remains above the target.Overseas markets were mostly closed overnight to mark New Year’s Day. However, stock futures in the United States were modestly lower, while Asian futures were mixed in a narrow range.Elsewhere in the market, Bitcoin rose 0.2 per cent to $94,143. The cryptocurrency had topped $109,000 in December before momentum cooled. At the market close in New York on December 31, spot gold had risen 0.7 per cent to $2624.50 a tonne. Iron ore was flat at $100.97 a tonne.Shares in New York were also lower on December 31 after a far better than expected 12 months for US equities. For 2024, the S&P 500 rallied 23.3 per cent, the Nasdaq surged 28.8 per cent.
