GM's sales slid in Q3 due to weak sales of vehicles with internal combustion engines, offset by robust gains for electric vehicles.\nDeflationary Risk For Global Autos\nIn a research note on Sunday, analysts at RBC Capital said bearish auto sentiment reflects a spate of 2024 profit warnings from European automakers, which have fueled deflationary worries. Both new and used vehicle prices have been falling for two years, according to Cox Automotive. Consumers now expect that prices will fall further, which is commonly called a deflationary spiral.\n\n\n\n↑\nX\n\n\n\n\nTesla Earnings Are On The Horizon. GM and Ferrari were the only two out of 10 auto and EV stocks covered by the firm to get a price hike. Others (Rivian (RIVN), Stellantis (STLA)) were cut or kept steady (Tesla, Ford (F)).\nGM Earnings\nEstimates: Analysts expect a 4% earnings increase, year over year, to $2.38 a share. Revenue is seen growing 1% to $44.671 billion, according to FactSet. That would, however, be well below gains of 7% on the top line and 60% on the bottom line in the previous quarter.\nResults: Check back Tuesday before the market opens.\nOutlook: Analysts expect full-year EPS of $9.97, a 30% increase from 2023. It would also be above the midpoint of the company's July guidance for 2024 EPS of $9.50-$10.\nStock Near Buy Point Ahead Of GM Earnings\nShares of General Motors fell 0.8% to 48.80 on the stock market today. GM stock is trying to regain a 49.86 buy point, just 2% below that entry. It bounced off support at the 50-day moving average earlier in October and continues to hold above that key support level. But GM stock has made only modest progress since an investor event earlier this month.\nDuring that event on Oct. 8, General Motors said its EV losses are diminishing and that its electric vehicles will soon cross the bridge to profitability.\n\nTesla and Ford stock also fell on Monday. Tesla reports Q3 earnings on Wednesday. Ford follows on Oct. 28. Stellantis and Rivian stock also retreated on Monday amid a broad stock market decline.\nICE Challenges, EV Losses In Spotlight\nGM says it remains committed to traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE) even as it invests in electric cars, an emerging and future growth market.\nDuring the GM earnings report, investors will watch forward commentary as clouds gather. While GM's U.S. EV sales vaulted 60% in the third quarter, its total new vehicle sales, mainly gas pickups and SUVs, fell 2%.\nAnalysts expect a 1% earnings decline next year on lower sales, FactSet shows.\nOn the EV front, GM has a growing lineup of new and cheaper electric vehicles. But investors remain worried about EV losses for automakers at large due to the high costs of developing this technology.
