In addition to the record fiscal-year results, Nvidia generated record-breaking fourth-quarter results in its gaming, data center, and professional visualization segments.</p><p>This robust performance was fueled by strong and continuing demand for its graphics processing units (GPUs), which are the top choice of diehard and casual gamers alike, driving its gaming revenue up by 61% last year. While that would be reason enough to be bullish on Nvidia&#39;s growth prospects, that&#39;s just the beginning.</p><h2>Head in the clouds</h2><p>Several years ago, the semiconductor maker saw the writing on the wall and focused its efforts on creating processors for cloud computing and data centers. The parallel processing capability of Nvidia&#39;s GPUs -- which processes a multitude of complex mathematical calculations simultaneously -- also made it uniquely suited to handle the lightning-fast movement of data through the ether, resulting in quicker response times for users.</p><p>Don&#39;t take my word for it. <b>Amazon</b> Web Services (AWS), <b>Alphabet</b>&#39;s Google Cloud, and <b>Microsoft</b> Azure all trust their processing to Nvidia, as do <b>Alibaba</b> Cloud, <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/IBM\">IBM</a></b> Cloud, and <b>Oracle</b> Cloud -- and that&#39;s just the big dogs. Many other cloud and data center providers rely on Nvidia.</p><p>Broad adoption by cloud platforms big and small pushed the company&#39;s data center revenue up by 58% in fiscal 2022.</p><h2>More where that came from</h2><p>Management expects the company&#39;s robust growth to continue. Nvidia is guiding for fiscal 2023 first-quarter revenue of $8.1 billion, up 43% year over year at the midpoint of its guidance and up 6% sequentially. The company also expects to expand its already juicy gross profit margin by roughly 50 basis points.</p><p>It&#39;s easy to understand why. The gaming, cloud computing, and data center markets are all growing by leaps and bounds. All told, management estimates Nvidia&#39;s total addressable market will grow to $250 billion by 2023, suggesting the company has just scratched the surface of a large and growing opportunity -- particularly in light of its fiscal 2022 revenue of just $26.9 billion. The gaming, cloud computing, and data center markets are all growing by leaps and bounds. All told, management estimates Nvidia&#39;s total addressable market will grow to $250 billion by 2023, suggesting the company has just scratched the surface of a large and growing opportunity -- particularly in light of its fiscal 2022 revenue of just $26.9 billion. Energy and select defensive sectors resisted the downtrend.</p><h2>What moved the market</h2><p>The share market added to three weeks of losses as weak overseas leads were compounded by signs of slowing growth in major trading partner China and souring US equity futures. Shanghai and Beijing reportedly tightened Covid restrictions over the weekend.</p><p>Growth in Chinese exports last month was the slowest since June 2020, according to customs data released today. Imports were flat as Shanghai, the world’s largest port, went into lockdown.</p><p>The trade figures continued a run of soft April Chinese data that helped send iron ore down almost 5 per cent on Friday. Copper hit a four-month low earlier in the week. ING announced a downward revision to its Chinese growth forecast, warning the Shanghai lockdown appeared likely to drag on until the end of the month.</p><p>The Australian dollar – seen by some forex traders as a proxy for commodity strength – fell as low as 69.96 US cents this afternoon, according to MarketWatch. Today’s low was the weakest reading since late January. The Aussie was down almost 0.7 per cent at 69.97 US cents in late-afternoon trade.</p><p>The ASX was already under pressure from Wall Street’s longest run of weekly losses in more than a decade. The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.57 per cent on Friday to a fifth straight losing week. The Nasdaq sank 1.4 per cent to a two-year closing low. The Dow dropped 0.3 per cent, sealing a sixth weekly loss.</p><p>Negative US futures this afternoon underlined the sour mood. S&amp;P 500 futures dived 45 points or 1.1 per cent. Dow and Nasdaq futures declined by at least 1 per cent.</p><p>The speculative end of the Australian market – a barometer of risk appetite – came under particular pressure. The S&amp;P/ASX Emerging Companies Index skidded 4.05 per cent to an eight-month low. The Small Ords fell 2.9 per cent to a level last seen in February 2021.</p><h2>Winners’ circle</h2><p>Westpac was the pick of the heavyweights, rising 3.23 per cent as investors cheered an increased dividend and a sharp reduction in costs. The bank’s first-half net profit of $3.28 billion was up 63 per cent on the previous six months, but down 5 per cent on the same period last financial year.</p><p>Decreased costs and a reduction in bad debts allowed the bank to hike its interim dividend to 61 cents per share despite contracting margins.</p><p>“I’m pleased with our progress on costs which are down 27%, or 10% excluding notable items, compared to the second half of 2021. This includes a reduction in headcount of more than 4000 as we track towards our target of an $8 billion cost base by FY24,” CEO Peter King said.</p><p>The only sectors to resist today’s downtrend were energy, healthcare and consumer staples. CSL put on 0.84 per cent, Santos 0.37 per cent and Woodside Petroleum 0.61 per cent.</p><p>Havens to attract a bid included Woolworths +0.55 per cent and Coles +0.64 per cent. Domino’s Pizza rallied 1.98 per cent. Ramsay Health Care bounced 1.22 per cent.</p><h2>Doghouse</h2><p>Rate-sensitive growth stocks were once again the market’s whipping boys, continuing this year’s pattern. Novonix shed 12.31 per cent, Imugene 11.11 per cent and Megaport 8.56 per cent.</p><p>Magellan announced it was selling its 11.6 per cent stake in Mexican fast food firm Guzman y Guzman for $140 million to refocus on its core funds management business. Shares in the firm dropped 8.41 per cent.</p><p>Troubled gaming group Star Entertainment shed 0.99 per cent on news it was suspending its VIP rebate programs while it fixes issues raised during a NSW inquiry.</p><p>Aged care provider Estia Health eased 4.14 per cent after warning of a delay in recovering Covid costs. The company has applied for government grants to recoup additional costs imposed by Covid regulations, but slow processing times meant a “significant portion” would not be approved before June 30.</p><p>News Corp fell 8.83 per cent to a 16-month low in the wake of Friday’s poorly-received trading update.</p><p>A sharp end-of-week decline in bulk metals weighed on the major miners. Fortescue Metals shed 5.76 per cent, Rio Tinto 2.25 per cent and BHP 1.26 per cent.</p><p>The real estate investment trust sector slumped 4.2 per cent to an 11-month low amid speculation about the impact of higher rates. Goodman Group gave up 6.99 per cent, Cromwell Property 4.73 per cent and Growthpoint Property 4.52 per cent.</p><p>ANZ fell 3.18 per cent as its shares traded ex-dividend.</p><h2>Other markets</h2><p>A tough session on Asian markets saw the Asia Dow lose 1.62 per cent, Japan’s Nikkei 2.46 per cent and China’s Shanghai Composite 0.5 per cent.</p><p>Oil retreated in volatile trade. And I am still maintaining my bullish thesis and am optimistic about its double-digit annual return potential in the next few years. More specifically, the updates will be twofold.</p><p>First, the bad news is that both the stock price and its earnings have declined since then. The earnings have declined faster than the price, so as a result, the valuation has slightly expanded to about 11.6x pretax earnings now. And in Q1 2022, 3 of its 6 newly formed business segments (NEX, Mobileye, and IFS) all achieved record quarterly revenue. Going forward, it projects large CAPEX expenditures in the next few years (around $27B in 2022 alone) to support further growth. We will explore the implications of these developments in our thesis too.</p><p>What is Buffett’s 10x Pretax Rule?</p><p>As detailed in my other earlier writings, it is not a coincidence that many of Buffett&#39;s best and largest investment successes are from buying businesses at 10x pretax earnings, because:</p><blockquote><ul><li><i>Buying an average business that stagnates forever at 10x pretax would already provide a 10% pretax earnings yield, directly comparable to a 10% yield bond.</i></li><li><i>In case you get to buy an above-average business (like INTC here) at 10x pretax, then any growth would be a bonus on top of the 10% yield above, leading to a double-digit return.</i></li></ul></blockquote><p>As seen from the chart below, the market now presents INTC as such an opportunity. The following chart shows the price history of INTC and its 10x pretax earnings. Pretax earnings are also referred to as &#34;EBT&#34;, Earnings Before Taxes, in this article. As seen, for a business like INTC, whenever the price is near or below 10x EBT, it had a good time to buy (and vice versa). At the time of my last analysis, its valuation was at 10x EBT, and now it is about 11.6x FW EBT. And to be seen next, INTC has an excellent prospect to grow also.</p><p>As also detailed in my earlier writings, a strong warning is in order here:</p><blockquote><ul><li><i>I am NOT suggesting you go out and start buying every/any stock that is below 10x EBT. Investors face two major risks A) quality risk or value trap, i.e., paying a bargain price for something of horrible quality, and B) valuation risk, i.e., paying too much for something of superb quality. The 10x pretax rule is mainly to avoid the type B risk AFTER the type A risk has been eliminated already.</i></li><li><i>Then how do we eliminate type A risks? I look for three things primarily. First, the business should have not an existential issue in the long run (largely a subjective judgment in the end). Second, the business should have no existential issue in the short run either. This can be quite reliably and objectively evaluated based on the cash flow and debt coverage. And finally, the business should have a decent chance to grow its earnings in the long term (and estimate the so-call perpetual growth rate). This will be a plus.</i></li></ul></blockquote><p>So with this framework, let’s examine INTC more closely.</p><p>INTC: does it have any short-term existential issues?</p><p>With INTC&#39;s market-leading position, scale, and management, I do not see any short-term survivability issues at all. As a matter of fact, INTC just affirmed a quite healthy 2022 outlook as shown below.</p><p>It projects a $76 billion revenue, representing a 2% year-over-year growth. And the management raised its EPS guidance by about $0.10 to $3.6 (non-GAAP) from its previous guidance. Note that the GAAP EPS outlook is $4.19. Also, the outlook for the tax rates is 9% in GAAP terms and 12% in non-GAAP terms. In my analysis here in this article, I used an effective tax rate of 10%.</p><p>Another reliable metric for checking on the short-term survival issue is debt coverage. The business is essentially debt-free with an average debt coverage above 50. Looking forward, its debt coverage will be a bit lower with the lowered EPS guidance and the heavy CAPEX expenditures expected. But it is still above 40 based on my projections, nowhere near levels that need to be concerned.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/200376c4b4534816aa369f14a7fb1b48\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"342\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>INTC 2022 Q1 earnings report</p><p>NTC: does it have any long-term existential issues?</p><p>If any of us think INTC has issues surviving in the long term (say 10 to 20 years), it is probably mainly because of the competition from other chipmakers like Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA), et al. I think these perceived threats are exaggerated for several reasons.</p><ul><li>Investors should not be too alarmed by the competition, especially not by the quarter-to-quarter fluctuations in their active users and margins. Furthermore, the pie is getting bigger at the same time. Emerging technologies such as autonomous driving, artificial intelligence, and smart appliances create an almost insatiable demand for chips. The global market for Multi-Core Processorswas estimated at $36.2 Billion in the year 2020. It is projected to reach $76.5 Billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 13.3%.</li><li><p>INTCiswell-positioned to compete on scale, existing products,new products, and its fabrication initiatives, etal.INTC&#39;s new CEO, Gelsinger&#39;s priorities on manufacturing are expected to tap into a high growth area and further diversify its revenue sources.</p></li><li><p>At the same time, the chip business also enjoys the government’s long-term support. The government now understands the chip business is a matter of national security. And INTC’s investment in foundry also enjoys support from the U.S. government. The Biden administration had recently pledged $52 billion toward building out domestic production.</p></li></ul><p>As such, the current valuation views INTC as a business that will never increase profits, but I think in the mid to long term, it will – which brings me to the third and last requirement.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/41a248eab1f46afa2a4098a5aa40b741\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"287\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>INTC 2022 Q1 earnings report</p><p>INTC: what are its perpetual growth prospects?</p><p>With the above, I would be already happy to buy a quality business like INTC at 10x EBT if it stagnates forever. But in INTC&#39;s case, I think there are good perpetual growth prospects too. As detailed in my original article,</p><blockquote><i>In the long term (like 10 years or more), the growth rate is “simply”:</i></blockquote><blockquote><i>Longer-Term Growth Rate = ROCE * Reinvestment Rate</i></blockquote><blockquote><i>ROCE stands for the return on capital employed.</i></blockquote><p>Detailed analysis of ROCE has been provided in my earlier article and I will just show the results directly. As seen, it was able to maintain a respectably high ROCE over the past decade: on average 41.5% for the past decade.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e6191096d2e6607e35bf4282b47314dd\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"399\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Source: author.</p><p>I am optimistic that INTC can maintain and even improve its ROCE In the near future. It has been pursuing several high-growth and high-margin future directions. In Q1 2022, 3 of its 6 newly formed segments (NEX, Mobileye, and IFS) all achieved record quarterly revenue. Mobileye saw a record quarterly revenue of $394M, up 5% YoY. Mobileye also demonstrated its Level 4 self-driving system in Jerusalem, a major milestone in preparation for its upcoming robotaxi services. IFS also saw record quarterly revenue up 175% YoY thanks to increased tool deliveries and increased automotive revenue.</p><p>Going forward, INTC projects large CAPEX expenditures in the next few years to support further growth. We will explore the sustainability and implications of the CAPEX expenditures next.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aab1977428c731dae6933f250fdb1426\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"352\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>INTC 2022 Q1 earnings report</p><p>With the ROCE estimated, we can estimate the long-term growth rate, as shown in the next chart. This table shows the long-term growth rate at different combinations of ROCE and reinvestment rate. I assume a 10~15% as a long-term reinvestment rate for INTC even though it will be reinvesting more in the next few years due to the foundry initiative. Note that in this table, I also added 2.5% of inflation to the growth rate. I think this is justified as INTC has demonstrated in the past it has the pricing power to adjust for inflation.</p><p>As seen, the long-term growth rate is in the single upper-digit range, about 6~9%. Now to put the pieces together and conclude:</p><ul><li>In INTC&#39;s case here, its current valuation is about 11.6x EBT, equivalent to a 9% yielding equity bond.</li><li>At the same time, there is a good prospect of 6%~9% long-term growth – a growth rate that can be funded organically and sustained by the business itself.</li><li>So an investment here is similar to owning a bond with a ~9% yield and at the same time with the coupon payment increase of 6~9% per year, leading to very favorable odds of double-digit return in the long term.</li></ul><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d5999d8662191a542bafaddc136e268a\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"285\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Source: author.</p><p>Final thoughts and risks</p><p>This article analyzes INTC, an industry leader that is for sale around 11.6x EBT. The current valuation views INTC as a business will stagnate permanently. Well, under its current valuation, our investment generates a handsome return already if it does.</p><p>Furthermore, on the contrary, there are good odds that it can grow its profits, by a healthy 6~9% per year. Its strategic initiatives in AXG (Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics Group), IFS (Intel Foundry Services), Mobileye, and new expansion of R&amp;D and fab investments in Europe add further growth catalysts.</p><p>Although, INTC faces some macroscopic risks and also risks unique to its operations as detailed below:</p><ul><li>Macroscopic risks. The Ukraine/Russian conflict is a big near-term uncertainty. The ripple effects (such as disruption to the supply chain) create further and higher-order risks.</li><li>Also, the PC demand is showing a declining trend in the post-COVID market, which can soften the demand for INTC chips. The COVID pandemic has boosted PC demand when people change their working habits, and now the worldwide PC demand is showing signs of renormalization. The duration and degree of such decline is an uncertainty.</li><li>In the longer term, INTC competes with other players in the chip space. As a matter of fact, INTC just affirmed a quite healthy 2022 outlook as shown below.It projects a $76 billion revenue, representing a 2% year-over-year growth. And the management raised its EPS guidance by about $0.10 to $3.6 (non-GAAP) from its previous guidance. Note that the GAAP EPS outlook is $4.19. Also, the outlook for the tax rates is 9% in GAAP terms and 12% in non-GAAP terms. In my analysis here in this article, I used an effective tax rate of 10%.Another reliable metric for checking on the short-term survival issue is debt coverage. The business is essentially debt-free with an average debt coverage above 50. Looking forward, its debt coverage will be a bit lower with the lowered EPS guidance and the heavy CAPEX expenditures expected. I think these perceived threats are exaggerated for several reasons.Investors should not be too alarmed by the competition, especially not by the quarter-to-quarter fluctuations in their active users and margins. Furthermore, the pie is getting bigger at the same time. Emerging technologies such as autonomous driving, artificial intelligence, and smart appliances create an almost insatiable demand for chips. The global market for Multi-Core Processorswas estimated at $36.2 Billion in the year 2020. It is projected to reach $76.5 Billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 13.3%.INTCiswell-positioned to compete on scale, existing products,new products, and its fabrication initiatives, etal.INTC's new CEO, Gelsinger's priorities on manufacturing are expected to tap into a high growth area and further diversify its revenue sources.At the same time, the chip business also enjoys the government’s long-term support. The government now understands the chip business is a matter of national security. And INTC’s investment in foundry also enjoys support from the U.S. government. The Biden administration had recently pledged $52 billion toward building out domestic production.As such, the current valuation views INTC as a business that will never increase profits, but I think in the mid to long term, it will – which brings me to the third and last requirement.INTC 2022 Q1 earnings reportINTC: what are its perpetual growth prospects?With the above, I would be already happy to buy a quality business like INTC at 10x EBT if it stagnates forever. But in INTC's case, I think there are good perpetual growth prospects too. As detailed in my original article,In the long term (like 10 years or more), the growth rate is “simply”:Longer-Term Growth Rate = ROCE * Reinvestment RateROCE stands for the return on capital employed.Detailed analysis of ROCE has been provided in my earlier article and I will just show the results directly. As seen, it was able to maintain a respectably high ROCE over the past decade: on average 41.5% for the past decade.Source: author.I am optimistic that INTC can maintain and even improve its ROCE In the near future. It has been pursuing several high-growth and high-margin future directions. In Q1 2022, 3 of its 6 newly formed segments (NEX, Mobileye, and IFS) all achieved record quarterly revenue. Mobileye saw a record quarterly revenue of $394M, up 5% YoY. Mobileye also demonstrated its Level 4 self-driving system in Jerusalem, a major milestone in preparation for its upcoming robotaxi services. IFS also saw record quarterly revenue up 175% YoY thanks to increased tool deliveries and increased automotive revenue.Going forward, INTC projects large CAPEX expenditures in the next few years to support further growth. We will explore the sustainability and implications of the CAPEX expenditures next.INTC 2022 Q1 earnings reportWith the ROCE estimated, we can estimate the long-term growth rate, as shown in the next chart. This table shows the long-term growth rate at different combinations of ROCE and reinvestment rate. I assume a 10~15% as a long-term reinvestment rate for INTC even though it will be reinvesting more in the next few years due to the foundry initiative. Note that in this table, I also added 2.5% of inflation to the growth rate. I think this is justified as INTC has demonstrated in the past it has the pricing power to adjust for inflation.As seen, the long-term growth rate is in the single upper-digit range, about 6~9%. Now to put the pieces together and conclude:In INTC's case here, its current valuation is about 11.6x EBT, equivalent to a 9% yielding equity bond.At the same time, there is a good prospect of 6%~9% long-term growth – a growth rate that can be funded organically and sustained by the business itself.So an investment here is similar to owning a bond with a ~9% yield and at the same time with the coupon payment increase of 6~9% per year, leading to very favorable odds of double-digit return in the long term.Source: author.Final thoughts and risksThis article analyzes INTC, an industry leader that is for sale around 11.6x EBT. Netflix</h2><p><b>Netflix</b> stock was already participating in the marketwide pullback for growth stocks before its latest earnings release, but sell-offs for the stock accelerated dramatically after the company published first-quarter results on April 19. While the company had previously guided for net subscriber additions of 2.5 million in the quarter, it actually wound up losing 200,000 subs in the period.</p><p>Net subscriber growth has been <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the most important metrics for Netflix investors, so to see the company post its first subscriber loss since 2011 was shocking and prompted a dramatic reassessment of the company&#39;s outlook and valuation.</p><p>Despite the company&#39;s ballooning content production budget, the dramatic spending increases don&#39;t appear to have corresponded neatly with the creation of more &#34;event&#34; television series and movies for the service. Some critics have long held that Netflix has pursued a quantity-over-quality approach to programming, but it was hard to fault that kind of strategy too much when the service was adding new subscribers at a rapid clip. Now, the dynamic seems to be changing considerably.</p><p>The streaming landscape has become much more competitive, with <b>Disney</b>&#39;s Disney+ service and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WBD\">Warner Bros. Discovery</a></b>&#39;s HBO Max boasting formidable content libraries and attracting subscribers at impressive rates. What&#39;s more, both Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery have theatrical and traditional television-based distribution avenues that can generate significant revenue and help justify budgets for the creation of prestige content.</p><p>One key question at hand is whether Netflix&#39;s business model is busted. Major strategy changes underway suggest that, at least to some extent, the answer to that question is yes. With the company&#39;s about-face on implementing an ad-supported service offering and new emphasis on password-sharing as a core concern, the streaming leader is gearing up for a big pivot. Introducing an ad-based service and cracking down on account sharing could wind up being big successes for the business, but investors should keep in mind there are no guarantees on either front.</p><p>The other key question at hand is whether Netflix stock is cheap at current levels. With shares down roughly 69% year to date and 73% from the high they hit last year, Netflix stands as the Nasdaq 100&#39;s biggest loser in 2022. The stock does look cheap by some metrics, but there are big challenges for the business on the horizon, and I think the index&#39;s second-biggest loser this year stands out as a much better buy.</p><h2>2. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PYPL\">PayPal</a> Holdings</h2><p>Taking second place in the Nasdaq&#39;s pantheon of worst-performing large-cap stocks this year is fintech leader <b>PayPal Holdings</b>.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8aefb09fd9bc69b64a1b0b745616a2d8\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"433\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>PYPL data by YCharts</span></p><p>PayPal stock trades down roughly 56% year to date, and it also trades down roughly 73% from its lifetime high -- a performance that matches that pullback Netflix has seen from its own peak. However, the fintech&#39;s big sell-offs seem harder to justify, and its performance outlook appears much rosier compared to the streaming video giant.</p><p>With its most recent update, PayPal announced that total payment volume (TPV) conducted through its platforms rose 15% on a currency-adjusted basis to reach $323 billion. Meanwhile, currency-adjusted revenue rose 8%. Non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings per share did fall roughly 28% year over year to $0.88 per share, but the decline isn&#39;t terribly concerning when placed in the context of the business&#39;s long-term growth potential and current valuation.</p><p>While it may be fair to call PayPal a &#34;growth stock,&#34; the company actually trades at reasonable valuation multiples. While the company had previously guided for net subscriber additions of 2.5 million in the quarter, it actually wound up losing 200,000 subs in the period.Net subscriber growth has been one of the most important metrics for Netflix investors, so to see the company post its first subscriber loss since 2011 was shocking and prompted a dramatic reassessment of the company's outlook and valuation.Despite the company's ballooning content production budget, the dramatic spending increases don't appear to have corresponded neatly with the creation of more \"event\" television series and movies for the service. Some critics have long held that Netflix has pursued a quantity-over-quality approach to programming, but it was hard to fault that kind of strategy too much when the service was adding new subscribers at a rapid clip. Now, the dynamic seems to be changing considerably.The streaming landscape has become much more competitive, with Disney's Disney+ service and Warner Bros. Discovery's HBO Max boasting formidable content libraries and attracting subscribers at impressive rates. What's more, both Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery have theatrical and traditional television-based distribution avenues that can generate significant revenue and help justify budgets for the creation of prestige content.One key question at hand is whether Netflix's business model is busted. Major strategy changes underway suggest that, at least to some extent, the answer to that question is yes. With the company's about-face on implementing an ad-supported service offering and new emphasis on password-sharing as a core concern, the streaming leader is gearing up for a big pivot. PayPal HoldingsTaking second place in the Nasdaq's pantheon of worst-performing large-cap stocks this year is fintech leader PayPal Holdings.PYPL data by YChartsPayPal stock trades down roughly 56% year to date, and it also trades down roughly 73% from its lifetime high -- a performance that matches that pullback Netflix has seen from its own peak. However, the fintech's big sell-offs seem harder to justify, and its performance outlook appears much rosier compared to the streaming video giant.With its most recent update, PayPal announced that total payment volume (TPV) conducted through its platforms rose 15% on a currency-adjusted basis to reach $323 billion. Meanwhile, currency-adjusted revenue rose 8%. To combat high inflation, the Federal Reserve is raising interest rates, which increases the cost of financing and makes it more expensive to borrow money. Rising interest rates do not affect these companies too much, considering none of them rely heavily on debt and all tend to be free-cash-flow positive. But rising interest rates do impact the economy overall and, in turn, consumers.</p><p>On top of this, there is the trend toward slower growth for all three companies. It&#39;s worth mentioning that Shopify&#39;s 2021 EPS was a bit of an anomaly, as it only made $268.64 million in income from operations but posted net income of $2.91 billion due to other net income of $2.87 billion. Similarly, Netflix posted less than 20% year-over-year revenue growth in 2021, but its revenue is expected to grow by less than 10% per year in 2022 and 2023. Meanwhile, Shopify&#39;s revenue growth remains high but is expected to slow down to close to 30% in 2023.</p><p>The slowing growth is a big deal, particularly for Netflix, which used to grow revenue at 30% or more per year.</p><h2>Valuations have come down for a reason</h2><p>Slowing growth paired with macroeconomic headwinds have compressed valuations for all three companies. Again, going off average analysts&#39; estimates, PayPal now has a 2022 forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of just 3.32 and a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 18.08. I am Bullish on AMD.The Sell-OffThe Nasdaq 100 Index (NDX) is down over 21% from its all-time high, which puts it past the standard threshold of a bear market (a drop of at least 20%). AMD is trading at nearly half of its all-time highs that it set in November 2021. AMD’s sell-off period aligns with the NDX sell-off period.AMD and NDX have a high correlation of 0.80 for the last six months, an R-squared of 0.64, and AMD has a beta of 1.78. Six-month values are all higher than longer terms, meaning that AMD’s returns have increased its reliance on the performance of the broader market.When individual assets are overly attached to the broad market performance, it can create oversold and overbought scenarios. AMD has been disproportionately punished.Why AMD is OversoldBears argue that AMD was a large pandemic beneficiary that is now facing the downside. The fact of the matter is if semiconductors face headwinds, they will only be short term in nature.The short term is slightly hindered, as GPU demand has largely diminished. This is due to large Ethereum (ETH-USD) miners no longer purchasing GPUs as the switch to proof-of-stake is expected to occur within 2022. However, GPUs only make up a small portion of AMD’s overall sales and profits.As well, many are citing the decrease in market prices of GPUs, but AMD wasn’t getting the benefit of higher prices; retailers and resellers were. To prove this, we can look at AMD’s computing and graphics segment’s operating margin; if it is notably higher, it means AMD has been able to extract higher prices from its customers. Q4-2021’s computing and graphics operating margin is 21.9%, compared to pre-shortage Q4 2019’s margin of 21.7%, materially the same.Some bears will cite Intel’s (INTC) entry into the GPU market as a reason for downside potential. Intel’s GPUs are expected to come to market in Q2 2022, but leaked performance data shows they are trailing well behind AMD and Nvidia’s (NVDA) current offerings, both of which are expected to be refreshed in Q3/Q4 2022.AMD’s long-term growth is still intact. Enterprise Solutions are leading AMD’s long-term fiscal growth, not the retail market. Enterprise revenue grew 113% for 2021, while retail Computing & Graphics only grew 45%. Profit growth shows an even bigger discrepancy because AMD is starting to benefit from economies of scale for its enterprise line. 2021 Enterprise profit grew 406% year-over-year, compared to Computing & Graphic’s 65%.AMD’s future is largely based on the Enterprise segment, which is less cyclical than the retail side.Investing in Long-term GrowthAMD announced on April 4th that it has a definitive agreement to acquire Pensando for ~$1.9 billion. Pensando will aid AMD in its data center value proposition. Pensando’s products allow for a more efficient distribution of computing power, which lifts the overall efficiency of data centers.The data center market is growing fast. According to Arizton, the data center market should grow to a market size of $288.3 billion by 2027, a 4.95% CAGR.AMD also finalized its acquisition of Xilinx for $35 billion in February. The two companies are synergistic and should be a catalyst for long-term growth. The merger combines the engineering talent of the two teams, and the underlying products are synergistic for adaptive computing.Xilinx’s offerings allow for AI-driven edge computing. The AI market is expected to grow even faster. According to a report by Fortune Business Insights, the AI market size is expected to grow to $1,394 billion by 2029, a 20.1% CAGR.A key commonality between these two acquisitions is they are not directed at enhancing AMD’s retail offerings; they are aimed at large corporations. AMD is pushing into higher-margin markets.Financially UndervaluedAMD is a growth company and has had its price butchered due to a perceived reduction in growth. AMD management expects growth of 31% for 2022 (before the Xilinx merger).When a profitable company like AMD is expecting significant growth, a P/E ratio of 33 is extremely low. The forward P/E ratio of ~21 highlights the undervaluation when growth is considered.Additionally, the forward P/E ratio uses analyst estimates. Analysts have historically underestimated AMD earnings.AMD reports Q1-2022 earnings on May 3rd, so we will see if analysts continue to underestimate the company.Wall Street’s TakeTurning to Wall Street, AMD earns a Moderate Buy rating, with 13 Buys and eight Hold ratings assigned over the past three months.The average AMD stock price forecast of $143.94 implies 67.7% upside potential.ConclusionThe bearish argument of the cyclical downturn has been overblown for AMD. The recent sell-off has made the broad market panic.
