πππThe prevailing theme for CES 2024 is undoubtedly AI. There were Magic Carpet, Flying Cars and even Candy Land with a mini roller coaster. It was simply amazing!
However the star of CES 2024 was $NVIDIA Corp(NVDA)$
which introduced the RTX 40 series Super Refresh, a trio of graphics cards. Nvidia unveiled the RTX 4080 Super, the RTX 4070 Ti Super and the RTX 4070 Super. These 3 new graphics chips will let gamers, designers and other computer users make better use of AI on their PCs.
The new GeForce RTX 4080 Super is expected to go on sale on January 31 for USD 999. RTX 4070 Ti Super will cost USD 799 and 4070 Super is priced at USD 599. These are excellent prices and value for money for what they can do.
Nvidia's share price reached an all time high of USD 553.46 last week and is up 10.4% in the past 5 trading days.
Nvidia said that the capabilities of its new products will not trigger rules put in place by the US government to limit the export of AI related chips to China.
Not to be outdone, Nvidia's main rival $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$
big reveal during CES 2024 is Ryzen 8000G APUs. APU or Accelerated Processing Unit is a type of processor that combines both a CPU and a GPU onto a single chip. According to AMD, the Ryzen 8000G graphics are so good that users are able to play Cyberpunk 2077 on these APUs.
AMD's AI announcements are perhaps less exciting to gamers but are helpful to developers. Ryzen AI grants access to thousands of various AI models for developers to use.
AMD's share price is up 4.4% in the past 5 days.
has introduced 5 new chips in the Intel Core HX Series at CES 2024. Starting with the mid range Core i5-14450HX, the line up includes the impressive Core I9-14900 HX, equipped with 24 cores and 32 threads. According to Intel, this will give a 17% boost in gaming and up to 51% faster performance in productivity tasks with these chips.
Intel's share price is only up 0. 13% in the past 5 days.
A great way to capture the upward momentum with these Semiconductor stocks is to buy $Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares(SOXL)$
This leveraged ETF provides 3 times the daily investment results or 300% of the performance of NYSE Semiconductor Index. However SOXL is only suitable for daily trades. It is definitely not suitable for long term holds due to the compounding nature of the ETF.
SOXL is up 6% in the past 5 days last week.
For long term investors it would be better to invest in $VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF(SMH)$ which represents the best semiconductor stocks trading in the US. The Top 10 holdings include Nvidia, TSMC, Broadcom, AMD, Intel, ASML, Lam Research and many more. The total number of holdings is 26. The expense ratio is 0.35%. The dividend yield is 0.58%.
SMH is up 3% in the past 5 days and 52% in the past year.
Semiconductors are at the heart of the AI revolution. Nvidia controls 90% of the market share while AMD is also trying to chip away at Nvidia's market share with its latest AMD Instinct MI300X accelerators that offer large on chip memory ideal for Generative AI.
AI is here to stay. CES 2024 offers a tantalising glimpse into the future of AI with the latest developments and technological advances of which semiconductors play a crucial role. We certainly live in exciting times and the best is yet to be.
