I’m watching the after-hours tape in Rocket Lab and the move doesn’t align with the underlying information.

The stock is down roughly $5 in after-hours trade following reports that a director sold 30,000 shares last week.

📊 Insider activity in context

The filings show 30k shares sold across December under a pre-arranged 10b5-1 plan. Post-sale, the director still owns approximately 393,000 shares. On a ~$20B market capitalisation, this transaction is immaterial. It does not alter control, incentives, or long-term ownership alignment.

For comparison, when the CEO sold roughly 2 million shares around $55, the stock digested the supply quickly and resumed its uptrend. Scale matters.

📉 4-hour structure and indicators

On the 4-hour chart, price is still holding above rising short-term EMAs after a sharp expansion phase. Bollinger Bands had widened materially during the run into the mid-$70s, signalling momentum extension rather than exhaustion. The current pullback is occurring from the upper band back toward the mid-band, which is typical after a vertical advance.

Momentum indicators had already begun cooling before the after-hours headline. RSI rolled off elevated levels rather than breaking down, and there is no loss of trend structure at this stage. This looks like consolidation and digestion, not technical failure.

Importantly, this move is happening in thin after-hours liquidity, where indicators tend to overshoot short-term but rarely redefine the underlying trend.

🧠 Market memory

There’s lingering sensitivity after the last broad market pullback that took this name from the $70s into the $30s. That move was macro-driven. This one isn’t. The current chart structure does not resemble that prior breakdown.

🚀 Proxy dynamics

If SpaceX becomes the IPO of the year, Rocket Lab remains the closest listed proxy for space launch and infrastructure exposure. That doesn’t make the stock cheap. It does mean that headline-driven reactions deserve to be weighed carefully against structure.

The simpler explanation usually holds. A stock that runs this far can retrace without anything breaking.

Sometimes the signal isn’t the insider sale. It’s whether the chart confirms the fear. At the moment, it doesn’t.
