Tech Stabilizes as Investors Brace for a Crucial Week

The artificial intelligence selloff finally lost some momentum on Friday, but the rebound came at a cost for the broader market.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.23%, shedding 653 points, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.52%. The Nasdaq Composite proved more resilient, slipping just 0.21% as pressure on technology stocks eased.

The session reversed much of Thursday’s rotation into defensive stocks. Consumer staples, which had surged to record highs the previous day, fell 1.8%, while energy led the market with a 2.5% gain as oil prices climbed.

Despite Friday’s losses, the Dow recorded its third consecutive weekly advance. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq, however, posted their second straight weekly declines.

The takeaway is clear: investors are shifting positions rapidly, and confidence in the AI trade remains fragile.

The AI Trade Is Facing a Credibility Test

The latest wave of selling was triggered by $Meta Platforms, Inc.(META)$ ’ earnings, which intensified concerns over the enormous cost of building AI infrastructure.

Investors are increasingly questioning how much debt and equity financing will be needed to sustain the data-center boom, and whether the returns will justify the investment.

The key issue is whether the current turbulence represents a temporary correction after an overheated rally or a more fundamental turning point for the AI trade.

For now, the answer remains uncertain…

Big Tech Earnings Could Change Everything

Tech

Next week could provide the market with some much-needed clarity. $Microsoft(MSFT)$ , $Amazon.com(AMZN)$ , and $Alphabet(GOOG)$ are all scheduled to report earnings, putting the profitability of AI investments firmly in the spotlight.

Investors will be looking beyond headline revenue and earnings figures. Cloud growth, capital expenditure, operating margins, and cash generation could all influence whether confidence returns.

It’s offers a volatile market and does not necessarily mean the broader bull case is over. But the coming earnings reports will need to support those expectations.

A Packed Calendar Adds to the Uncertainty

Earnings season will reach a major milestone next week, with roughly one-third of S&P 500 companies scheduled to report.

Among the biggest names to watch:

  • Monday: $Verizon(VZ)$

  • Tuesday: Boeing, Coca-Cola, and Visa

  • Wednesday: Alphabet, GE Vernova, Microsoft, Ford, and T-Mobile US

  • Thursday: Amazon, Caterpillar, Eli Lilly, Intel, Mastercard, and Merck

  • Friday: AbbVie, Chevron, and ExxonMobil

The Federal Reserve will also meet on Tuesday and Wednesday. Markets broadly expect interest rates to remain unchanged, making the policy statement and press conference especially important for any clues about the outlook.

Inflation and growth data will add another layer of uncertainty. Thursday brings the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, alongside third-quarter GDP growth.

Together, these releases could reshape expectations for interest rates, corporate earnings, and equity valuations.

The Bottom Line: A Turning Point for AI?

Friday’s session offered a brief reprieve for technology stocks, but it did little to resolve the questions hanging over the AI investment boom.

The market is entering a decisive stretch in which earnings, spending plans, inflation data, and Federal Reserve guidance will all compete for investors’ attention…

If major technology companies demonstrate that AI demand is translating into sustainable revenue and profits, the recent selloff could prove to be a painful but temporary reset.

If capital spending continues to rise faster than cash generation, however, investors may demand a much higher standard of proof before rewarding AI-related stocks.

The next week could determine whether Wall Street is simply cooling an overheated trade, or beginning to rethink the AI rally itself…
