Why I Am Holding OCBC Through Earnings (And Laughing Off the Citi Sell Off Noise)

๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸEveryone, deep breaths.  The Singapore market is having a bit of a moment right now, thanks largely to that recent Citi analyst commentary triggering a wave of nervous selling.  But while some are hitting the panic button, I am sitting tight and holding $OCBC Bank(O39.SI)$  straight through its upcoming Q3 2026 earnings report on Friday, November 6 2026.

Before this Citi induced dip, OCBC was the absolute crown jewel and top performer of the Singapore market, aggressively testing its 52 week high of SGD 32.57.  One analyst comment does not mean it is time to sell.  Even though the stock took a short term hit, dropping 9.73% in October, OCBC is still up a phenomenal 46.25% year todate.

When you look past the trading desk chatter, the underlying reality is a compounding machine built like an absolute financial fortress.

Here is exactly why I am not worried:

The Ultimate Buffer - Up 155.58%

I loaded up on OCBC back in January 2021 at an entry price of SGD 11.35.  Fast forward to today, and my position is up a massive 155.58%.  When you are sitting on triple digit gains and a rock solid dividend stream that has been compounding for over 5 years, one research note does not alter the long term structural power of a banking giant.

Institutional consensus remains overwhelmingly positive.  RHB Singapore analysts have upgraded their target price for OCBC from SGD 32.85 to SGD 33.70 and reiterated their Buy call.  RHB cited OCBC's fortress like balance sheet strength and powerful wealth management momentum.  Other major research houses track target prices between SGD 32.50 to SGD 37.23, with a median target of SGD 33.70.  That is an upside potential of 16% to 19%.

OCBC's Industry Leading Fundamentals & Record Earnings

When people panic sell over macro sentiment, they ignore the peerless metrics that OCBC's management has delivered:

The Best Ratios in Singapore:

OCBC boasts a flawless Non Performing Loan (NPL) ratio of just 0.90% together with a massive, conservative Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio of 14.0%.  OCBC carries minimal bad debt and hold vast reserves to absorb any regional shocks.

Record Breaking Performance:

In its 1H2026 financial report, OCBC smashed expectations with a record profit of SGD 4.19 billion, up 13% YoY.  Even as global interest rates softened, its premier wealth management and fee income divisions exploded - surging 27% to a record SGD 3.29 billion.

How OCBC Stacks Up Against DBS and UOB

When you line OCBC up against its peers, it sits beautifully in the sweet spot of value and defensive strength:

Valuation (Price to Book):

$DBS(D05.SI)$  commands a huge premium at 2.87x P/B ratio, making it expensive to accumulate here.  $UOB(U11.SI)$  sits on the value side at 1.20x P/B ratio.  OCBC offers the perfect balance at 1.94x P/B ratio.

OCBC's Wealth Moat:

Unlike its peers, OCBC holds unique, high margin growth engines in Great Eastern Holdings $Great Eastern(G07.SI)$ and Bank of Singapore (private banking).  This gives OCBC a dominant non-interest income safety net that insulates them far better than its peers when net interest income margins face global pressure.

OCBC's Dividend Machine

At compressed prices, OCBC offers a stellar trailing yield of 3.07%, backed by a firm 50% payout ratio policy.  Following the SGD 0.47 per share interim dividend payout in August 2026, the next big cash distribution will be declared together with its full year results in late February 2027.

Selling now means voluntarily walking away from a generational compounding stream of passive income right before the board calculates the next dividend payout.

DCA and the SGX 10 Share Board Lot Game Changer

Implementing a dollar cost averaging or DCA strategy,  is an incredible counter weapon against volatility.

Better yet, thanks to the SGX board lot size cut from 100 to 10 shares launched on 5 October 2026, OCBC's capital entry barrier has been reduced by a huge 90%.

Instead of needing SGD 2900 plus to buy a block of 100 OCBC shares, you can now scoop up bite sized batches of SGD 290 on your Tiger Brokers App whenever the market overreacts.  This lets you lower your cost basis and drives your long term yield on cost even higher.

What I Will Be Watching on 6 November Earnings:

When OCBC's earnings report drops on 6 November 2026, I will be tuning out media noise and tracking 3 important data points:

Net Interest Margin (NIM):

How well lending spreads hold up against the revised interest rate outlook.

Wealth Management Income:

Ensuring non interest wealth management inflows continue to outpace lending drag.

Asset Quality:

Confirming Non Performing Loans remain tightly locked down at that beautiful below 1% mark.

Concluding Thoughts

There is no better guiding principle than the wisdom of the Oracle of Omaha himself.  As Warren Buffett famously said:

"If you aren't willing to own a stock for 10 years, don't even think about owning it for 10 minutes".

Having held OCBC since January 2021, I am already more than halfway through that 10 year horizon. A temporary pullback does not change OCBC's fortress grade balance sheet or a wealth engine that is firing on all cylinders.  I am sitting tight, collecting the dividends and let time do the heavy lifting.  That is simply the magic of compounding.

๐ŸŽ Write & Win | Earnings Season: Hold or Sell?
Whenever a company is about to report, investors face the same question: Earnings tonightโ€”do you hold or sell? Some investors hold with confidence: โ€œI'm in it for the long term. One night won't change my view.โ€ Some trim their positions: โ€œLock in some gains and sleep better.โ€ Others keep cash ready: โ€œIf it drops, I'll buy more!โ€ One earnings report can send a stock soaringโ€”or fallingโ€”overnight. So, what's your move?

Good for you! In my opinion, OCBC is a strong and stable hold for long term investment. Do not get swayed by fearful sentiments if the stock you hold has a solid foundation.

Pandas Review: SG banks start to drop. After the setup of 10 lot per trade. My theory is now more people sell when able at a smaller lot of 10. Last time at lot of 100. More people HODL.
