Wall Street Faces Another High-Stakes Week

Investors certainly needed one after Friday’s market sell-off, and the coming days offer little chance to catch their breath.

The week gets underway with earnings from $Apple(AAPL)$ and $Palantir(PLTR)$ after Monday’s closing bell. Both companies could either add to Friday’s market turmoil or help restore some confidence. Results from $Loews(L)$ , along with several semiconductor and energy companies, will also be on investors’ radar.

The Week That Shook Big Tech

Last week’s technology sell-off was a reminder of just how demanding investors have become.

After an encouraging start to the earnings season, disappointing results from Alphabet, Amazon and Intel triggered a sharp reversal. The week had already been eventful, beginning with Anthropic’s S-1 filing, but the latest earnings reports ultimately put technology stocks under heavy pressure.

The market reaction was particularly striking because several businesses delivered strong results in strategically important areas.

  • Alphabet: Revenue and earnings missed expectations, sending shares down approximately 13%. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted growth in search, but monetization remains a concern as AI changes how users interact with the platform.

  • Amazon: The company missed on both revenue and earnings. Strong performance from Amazon Web Services was not enough to prevent a sell-off.

  • $Intel(INTC)$ : Earnings came in above expectations and revenue was broadly in line, but weakness in PC sales, partly attributed to rising memory costs, overshadowed the results. Shares plunged more than 28%.

The common theme was not simply disappointing fundamentals. It was the increasingly high bar companies must clear to satisfy investors.

Strong AI and Cloud Growth Wasn't Enough

Look beneath the headline numbers, and the picture becomes more complicated.

Several of these companies delivered impressive growth in precisely the businesses investors have been counting on to drive the next phase of the AI boom.

Amazon Web Services generated $45.9 billion in revenue, representing 40% year-over-year growth and comfortably exceeding analyst expectations.

Alphabet's cloud division also performed strongly, reporting $30.7 billion in revenue, ahead of the $29.1 billion analysts had anticipated.

Intel delivered another encouraging figure in its data center and AI business: revenue reached $7.318 billion, compared with expectations of $6.675 billion, representing 78% growth from a year earlier.

Even $SanDisk Corp.(SNDK)$ , which beat expectations on both revenue and earnings, was caught up in the broader technology sell-off.

These figures point to businesses that are still benefiting from substantial AI-related demand. Yet investors are no longer rewarding growth automatically. They want stronger evidence that investment is translating into sustainable profits, cash flow and shareholder returns.

Washington Takes Center Stage

Technology earnings are only part of the story this week. Tuesday's U.S. midterm elections could have important implications for financial markets.

Investors will be watching the potential impact on congressional control, the Iran war, AI regulation and the continued expansion of data centers.

Political developments could influence sectors well beyond technology, particularly if policymakers begin challenging the pace of AI infrastructure investment or changing government spending priorities.

A Packed Calendar: What Investors Should Watch

The coming week brings a demanding combination of corporate earnings and economic releases.

  • Apple and Palantir report after the closing bell.

The Bottom Line: A Market Searching for Its Next Catalyst

After Friday's sell-off, investors are looking for reassurance. This week could determine whether Wall Street finds a reason to stabilize, or another reason to sell…
