Do You Have Experience Where Stock Gains > Options?

Over the past 10 years, both Nvidia and Bitcoin have delivered returns of up to 30,000%. In our community, we've also seen many users achieve over 100% gains from holding the underlying stock. In some cases, the returns even appear higher than those from options. For example, after TSM's earnings report yesterday, the stock surged, and one user shared a 222% gain from holding the stock. With gains this high, do you still believe in the leverage of options? Or do you believe in the magic of time? Have you ever made such impressive returns from holding the stock?

I Used to Hold Without Fear. Now I Sell Too Soon When I Have Unrealized Gains

Over the past decade, we've witnessed remarkable financial stories unfold. Companies like Nvidia have skyrocketed over 30,000%, while early Bitcoin investors have seen returns beyond imagination. These aren’t just numbers; they are examples of what’s possible when conviction meets patience. In trading and investing, there’s a loud crowd that praises high-risk, high-reward strategies, especially options. But sometimes, the most powerful gains come not from complexity or speed, but from simply holding a good stock through time. That sounds easy, but if you’ve been in the market long enough, you know it’s anything but. When Holding Worked Back when I started investing, I used Webull. I didn’t know much. I just kept reading one thing: ā€œBuy and hold through volatility.ā€ So that’s what I did. I

In theory, options should always deliver higher returns than the stock itself. After all, they're leveraged bets. But in real trading? Sometimes the unexpected happens — the stock ends up outperforming the option in percentage gain, especially when time or volatility plays tricks. Why Does It Happen? You’re right on direction, the stock flies — but your option… lags or even loses value. Why? Time decay: Options lose value with time, even if the stock moves slowly in your favor. Volatility crush: Right after a news event (like earnings), implied volatility may drop sharply, and your option premium deflates. Wrong strike or expiry: A deep out-of-the-money call doesn’t move much until the stock really explodes — and by then, you may have already sold or expired. Real Traders Know the Feeling
I trade both stocks and options. Take most profits from options trades.  Trade whatever instruments that best suit your risk appetite, skills level and time horizon.  There are many paths to financial freedom.
I'm uncomfortable with the inherent leverage in options and the elevated risk it carries. For me, it's stocks and that too in cash & carry mode.

nope im pretty new haha
Yes, there are plenty of situations where holding the stock itself outperforms holding or trading the options, especially when the movement in the underlying asset is steady, slower than expected, or simply not volatile enough to justify the cost and decay of options. A classic example is when a stock appreciates gradually over time without large price spikes. In such cases, long-term investors who simply bought and held the stock often come out ahead of traders using calls or spreads. This is particularly true when implied volatility is high—meaning options are expensive—and the actual move in the stock fails to exceed what the market was pricing in. Even if the stock moves in the right direction, the gains from an option might be minimal or even negative due to time decay (theta), volati

Stocks vs. Options: When Holding Beats Leverage in the Long Game

The debate between holding stocks and trading options is a classic one, especially when assets like NVIDIA ( $NVIDIA(NVDA)$ ) and Bitcoin (BTC) have delivered mind-blowing returns of up to 30,000% over the past decade. A recent example from our community—a 222% gain from holding Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company ( $Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM)$ ) stock—has reignited the question: Can simply holding a stock outperform the high-octane leverage of options? With TSMC’s Q2 2025 earnings sparking a 17.85% surge, we explore when stocks outshine options, when options steal the show, and how to strategize in today’s market. Whether you believe in the magic of time or the thrill of leverage, this

Based on my experience of trading both Stocks and Options for the past 4 years, options is certainly a double-edged sword. It can supplement your stocks (I sell cash-secured puts and covered calls) as additional income while waiting for the price to appreciate over time. However, when price movement is extreme, it can cause you to lose out on potentially larger gains. In the end, it really depends on your investment style.

I think they are different tools to be leveraged on by different investors, as long as they fully understand how they work and the risks involved. I wouldn’t say stocks are superior than options even with these gains as these are not the norm. For most investors, options offer greater returns at lesser risks than stocks and I am still trying to find time to properly learn how to leverage on options. Time is often important for any investment tool. We need time for growth and we need time for the 8th wonder of the world- compounding. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be this wise saying of time in the market is more important than timing the market. Timing the market is something that even experts can get it wrong. I haven’t made such impressive returns in percentage from stocks. However, on to

I've experienced both — options giving me 300% overnight, and stocks giving me 200% over time. But here's the catch: most traders can't emotionally survive long enough to enjoy big stock gains. Read more here: https://tigr.link/s/50Bjg9i
