We observed another bull trap formed in June, as the market rejected buying momentum at its near-term resistance again.

BABA hit our near-term price target of $120, allowing us to take profit and cut 50% of our exposure. Notably, the bull trap price action is not constructive.

Our reverse cash flow valuation model indicates that the market is asking for a higher yield and hurdle rate to hold BABA stock. Therefore, BABA could underperform.

Therefore, we revise our rating from Strong Buy to Hold. We urge investors to be patient and await a potential re-test of its May lows.

Price Action Thesis

We follow up our post-FQ4 earnings update with a detailed price action analysis on Alibaba (NYSE:BABA) stock. As expected, BABA hit our near-term price target (PT) of $120 in early June but formed a bull trap. Therefore, we revisited our price action thesis and update readers on some significant developments.

Accordingly, it's increasingly clear that BABA stock has faced stiff selling pressure at the $120 level. Notwithstanding, its March capitulation levels have held firmly, which bodes well for longer-term recovery in momentum.

However, we must emphasize that we have not observed a significant bear trap price action that could indicate a sustained reversal in its bearish bias. Therefore, the market has been very astute in using positive news in Alibaba over the past three months, drawing in dip buyers rapidly toward the $120 resistance before creating those bull traps.

Our price action analysis indicates a possible re-test of May lows before the next leg higher. But, we don't expect a breakdown of March lows for now.

We also revisited our valuation analysis and tried to model the market's perception of BABA valuation. Our reverse cash flow model indicates that the market could be asking for a higher hurdle rate and a higher free cash flow (FCF) yield, given its risks. Therefore, BABA stock could continue to underperform, as seen by the bull traps at its near-term resistance.

Therefore, we revise our rating from Strong Buy to Hold as we await a re-test of its May lows. We will reassess our rating if we observe a double bottom bear trap or constructive price action signals close to its near-term support.

Another Bull Trap impeded BABA's Recovery in June

BABA price chart (weekly) (TradingView)

On our weekly chart, we can corral the two significant bull traps that formed at the $120 near-term resistance level in March and June. Therefore, we hope investors have used our previous short-term PT to take profit and loosen their exposure. We have also cut 50% of our exposure at our near-term PT (using automated sell-limit orders).

However, we didn't expect a bull trap to form again so soon at its near-term resistance. As a result, we believe that BABA could continue trading at a range below the $120 level. Therefore, we think it's apt to rescind our medium-term PT of $160 given the price action developments.

Given the bull trap, we expect the price to retrace further to re-test its May lows. However, it's still too early to observe whether the May lows could hold. Notably, we expect to see a bear trap price action trigger at its May lows to inform us of a potential reversal in its bearish bias. Therefore, we urge investors to pay attention to the upcoming re-test.

BABA Stock Valuation Could Face Challenges

BABA stock reverse cash flow valuation model. Data source: S&P Cap IQ, author

The market's bull trap in June highlighted its lack of confidence in BABA stock. Therefore, we revisited our models and checked on the updated consensus estimates.

We noticed that its FCF estimates had been marked down significantly as the Street factored in macro headwinds and weaker consumer spending. Consequently, it affects Alibaba's FCF profitability and our previous valuation analysis.

Therefore, we updated our model with a reverse cash flow valuation analysis. We used a hurdle rate slightly above the Invesco QQQ ETF's (QQQ) 5Y CAGR of 14.7%. We believe it's the minimum we require to take risks investing in Alibaba. We also used a slightly higher than average FCF yield of 4.75% (but below its current NTM FCF yield of 6.02%).

Finally, using a blended FCF margin of 12.1%, we require Alibaba to post a TTM revenue of CNY1,474.91B by CQ2'26. The revised consensus estimates indicate that Alibaba could deliver revenue of CNY1,167B in FY25 (ending March 2025).

Accordingly, it requires Alibaba to post a revenue CAGR of 20.6% from FY25-CQ2'26, an unlikely scenario. Therefore, we think it could explain why the market remains tentative in re-rating BABA stock above its near-term resistance.

Is BABA Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?

We revise our rating on BABA stock from Strong Buy to Hold for now. We have already taken profit and cut 50% of our exposure at our near-term PT of $120. We observed another bull trap formed in June, as the market rejected buying momentum at its near-term resistance again.BABA hit our near-term price target of $120, allowing us to take profit and cut 50% of our exposure. Notably, the bull trap price action is not constructive. Our reverse cash flow valuation model indicates that the market is asking for a higher yield and hurdle rate to hold BABA stock. Therefore, BABA could underperform. Therefore, we revise our rating from Strong Buy to Hold. We urge investors to be patient and await a potential re-test of its May lows.Price Action ThesisWe follow up our post-FQ4 earnings update with a detailed price action analysis on Alibaba (NYSE:BABA) stock. As expected, BABA hit our near-term price target (PT) of $120 in early June but formed a bull trap. Therefore, we revisited our price action thesis and update readers on some significant developments.Accordingly, it's increasingly clear that BABA stock has faced stiff selling pressure at the $120 level. But, we don't expect a breakdown of March lows for now.We also revisited our valuation analysis and tried to model the market's perception of BABA valuation. We will reassess our rating if we observe a double bottom bear trap or constructive price action signals close to its near-term support.Another Bull Trap impeded BABA's Recovery in JuneBABA price chart (weekly) (TradingView)On our weekly chart, we can corral the two significant bull traps that formed at the $120 near-term resistance level in March and June. Therefore, we think it's apt to rescind our medium-term PT of $160 given the price action developments.Given the bull trap, we expect the price to retrace further to re-test its May lows. However, it's still too early to observe whether the May lows could hold. Notably, we expect to see a bear trap price action trigger at its May lows to inform us of a potential reversal in its bearish bias. Therefore, we urge investors to pay attention to the upcoming re-test.BABA Stock Valuation Could Face ChallengesBABA stock reverse cash flow valuation model. Data source: S&P Cap IQ, authorThe market's bull trap in June highlighted its lack of confidence in BABA stock. We also used a slightly higher than average FCF yield of 4.75% (but below its current NTM FCF yield of 6.02%).Finally, using a blended FCF margin of 12.1%, we require Alibaba to post a TTM revenue of CNY1,474.91B by CQ2'26. The revised consensus estimates indicate that Alibaba could deliver revenue of CNY1,167B in FY25 (ending March 2025).Accordingly, it requires Alibaba to post a revenue CAGR of 20.6% from FY25-CQ2'26, an unlikely scenario. Therefore, we think it could explain why the market remains tentative in re-rating BABA stock above its near-term resistance. Is BABA Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?We revise our rating on BABA stock from Strong Buy to Hold for now. We have already taken profit and cut 50% of our exposure at our near-term PT of $120. Given its series of bull traps at its near-term resistance, we rescind our medium-term PT of $160.Our valuation analysis also indicates that the market doesn't expect to re-rate BABA higher anytime soon. Therefore, investors should avoid adding anywhere near its near-term resistance.Notwithstanding, we urge investors to be patient and let the bull trap price action play out before adding exposure. We are awaiting a re-test of its May lows but will continue to monitor its price action closely.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":294,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9041951503,"gmtCreate":1655998129902,"gmtModify":1676535747851,"author":{"id":"3559086518230868","authorId":"3559086518230868","name":"Everythingibuygoesupppwinbigbig","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9d617261b5761f846aa77f568df27373","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3559086518230868","authorIdStr":"3559086518230868"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$THAI BEVERAGE PUBLIC CO LTD(Y92.SI)$đ","listText":"$THAI BEVERAGE PUBLIC CO LTD(Y92.SI)$đ","text":"$THAI BEVERAGE PUBLIC CO LTD(Y92.SI)$đ","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/fd1705e7801651bcd65f71e7c78d8022","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9041951503","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":223,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9043874208,"gmtCreate":1655910850504,"gmtModify":1676535730496,"author":{"id":"3559086518230868","authorId":"3559086518230868","name":"Everythingibuygoesupppwinbigbig","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9d617261b5761f846aa77f568df27373","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3559086518230868","authorIdStr":"3559086518230868"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Please đđ»","listText":"Please đđ»","text":"Please đđ»","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9043874208","repostId":"1115890604","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":326,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9043875785,"gmtCreate":1655910817547,"gmtModify":1676535730481,"author":{"id":"3559086518230868","authorId":"3559086518230868","name":"Everythingibuygoesupppwinbigbig","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9d617261b5761f846aa77f568df27373","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3559086518230868","authorIdStr":"3559086518230868"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$THAI BEVERAGE PUBLIC CO LTD(Y92.SI)$đ","listText":"$THAI BEVERAGE PUBLIC CO LTD(Y92.SI)$đ","text":"$THAI BEVERAGE PUBLIC CO LTD(Y92.SI)$đ","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/44f42f83a755a8686a3da78bee9bcb80","width":"1080","height":"2072"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9043875785","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":152,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9043875373,"gmtCreate":1655910782592,"gmtModify":1676535730466,"author":{"id":"3559086518230868","authorId":"3559086518230868","name":"Everythingibuygoesupppwinbigbig","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9d617261b5761f846aa77f568df27373","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3559086518230868","authorIdStr":"3559086518230868"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"đđ»","listText":"đđ»","text":"đđ»","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9043875373","repostId":"2245821282","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2245821282","pubTimestamp":1655910080,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2245821282?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-06-22 23:01","market":"us","language":"en","title":"FDA to Order Juul E-Cigarettes off U.S. Market","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2245821282","media":"The Wall Street Journal","summary":"U.S. health officials are poised to reject Juulâs application after two-year reviewJuul had sought a","content":"

U.S. health officials are poised to reject Juulâs application after two-year review

Juul had sought authorization for its tobacco- and menthol-flavored products to stay on the U.S. market.

The Food and Drug Administration is preparing to order Juul Labs Inc. to take its e-cigarettes off the U.S. market, according to people familiar with the matter.

The FDA could announce its decision as early as Wednesday, the people said. The marketing denial order would follow a nearly two-year review of data presented by the vaping company, which sought authorization for its tobacco- and menthol-flavored products to stay on the U.S. market.

Uncertainty has clouded Juul since it landed in the FDAâs sights four years ago, when its fruity flavors and hip marketing were blamed for fueling a surge of underage vaping. The company since then has been trying to regain the trust of regulators and the public. It limited its marketing and in 2019 stopped selling sweet and fruity flavors. Juulâs sales have tumbled in recent years.

The FDA has been conducting a review of U.S. vaping products, weighing their popularity with young people against their potential benefits as less harmful alternatives for adult cigarette smokers. All U.S. e-cigarette manufacturers in 2020 were required to submit their products for FDA review to stay on the market.

The FDA in 2020 barred the sale of all sweet and fruity e-cigarette cartridges and hasnât yet allowed any to come back. The agency has cleared the way for Juulâs biggest rivals, Reynolds American Inc. and NJOY Holdings Inc., to keep tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes on the market. Industry observers had expected Juul to receive similar clearance.

Juul had no immediate comment. The company could pursue an appeal through the FDA, challenge the decision in court or file a revised application for its products.

Juul surged to the top of the U.S. e-cigarette market in 2018, but it has lost some ground to other brands more recently. It slipped to second place behind Reynoldsâ Vuse brand in the 12 weeks ended June 4, according to an analysis of Nielsen data by Goldman Sachs analyst Bonnie Herzog.

Last year, Juul reported a net loss of $259 million and an 11% decline in sales to $1.3 billion, according to a disclosure the company made to employees. The U.S. represents nearly all of Juulâs revenue, though its products are also available in Canada, the U.K., Italy, France and the Philippines.

The FDA is separately moving forward on a plan to mandate the elimination of nearly all nicotine in cigarettes, a policy that would upend the $95 billion U.S. cigarette industry and, health officials say, prompt millions of people to quit smoking or switch to alternatives such as e-cigarettes. That rule will take years to implement and tobacco companies could sue to fight it.

An FDA order against Juul would be a blow for Marlboro maker Altria Group Inc., which in 2018 paid $12.8 billion for a 35% stake in Juul. The deal valued Juul at about $35 billion. Since then, Juulâs value has plummeted amid the regulatory crackdowns and declining sales. Altria valued its Juul stake at $1.6 billion as of March 31.

Shares of Altria, which assisted Juul with its FDA application, fell about 10% in early Wednesday trading after The Wall Street Journal reported on the expected FDA decision.

When Juul became a teen status symbol, many agencies launched investigations into the e-cigarette startup. States, school administrators and families filed thousands of lawsuits against the company alleging that Juul had targeted teens. A criminal investigation by federal prosecutors and the FDA is pending, according to a person familiar with the matter, as are most of those lawsuits.

Regulators and lawmakers criticized Juulâs early use of young adult models, celebrities and social-media influencers in its marketing. In response, Juul voluntarily shut down its Facebook and Instagram accounts in the U.S., stopped using models in its advertising and suspended all of its print, broadcast and digital advertising in the U.S. In 2019, Juul halted U.S. sales of its mango, mint and other sweet flavored pods, leaving only tobacco and menthol on the market. The company has said that it never targeted children.

Underage vaping has fallen in the U.S. since federal restrictions raised the legal purchase age for tobacco products to 21 and barred the sale of sweet and fruity e-cigarette refill cartridges. Juulâs popularity among young people also has dropped. A federal study released in September showed that Juul was the No. 4 brand among high school vapers, after Puff Bar, Vuse and Smok.

In its submission to the FDA, Juul submitted two flavorsâmenthol and Virginia Tobaccoâin two nicotine strengths, 3% and 5%. The marketing denial order would follow a nearly two-year review of data presented by the vaping company, which sought authorization for its tobacco- and menthol-flavored products to stay on the U.S. market.Uncertainty has clouded Juul since it landed in the FDAâs sights four years ago, when its fruity flavors and hip marketing were blamed for fueling a surge of underage vaping. Industry observers had expected Juul to receive similar clearance.Juul had no immediate comment. The company could pursue an appeal through the FDA, challenge the decision in court or file a revised application for its products.Juul surged to the top of the U.S. e-cigarette market in 2018, but it has lost some ground to other brands more recently. It slipped to second place behind Reynoldsâ Vuse brand in the 12 weeks ended June 4, according to an analysis of Nielsen data by Goldman Sachs analyst Bonnie Herzog.Last year, Juul reported a net loss of $259 million and an 11% decline in sales to $1.3 billion, according to a disclosure the company made to employees. The U.S. represents nearly all of Juulâs revenue, though its products are also available in Canada, the U.K., Italy, France and the Philippines. That rule will take years to implement and tobacco companies could sue to fight it.An FDA order against Juul would be a blow for Marlboro maker Altria Group Inc., which in 2018 paid $12.8 billion for a 35% stake in Juul. The deal valued Juul at about $35 billion. Since then, Juulâs value has plummeted amid the regulatory crackdowns and declining sales. Altria valued its Juul stake at $1.6 billion as of March 31.Shares of Altria, which assisted Juul with its FDA application, fell about 10% in early Wednesday trading after The Wall Street Journal reported on the expected FDA decision. When Juul became a teen status symbol, many agencies launched investigations into the e-cigarette startup. States, school administrators and families filed thousands of lawsuits against the company alleging that Juul had targeted teens. A criminal investigation by federal prosecutors and the FDA is pending, according to a person familiar with the matter, as are most of those lawsuits.Regulators and lawmakers criticized Juulâs early use of young adult models, celebrities and social-media influencers in its marketing. The company has said that it never targeted children.Underage vaping has fallen in the U.S. since federal restrictions raised the legal purchase age for tobacco products to 21 and barred the sale of sweet and fruity e-cigarette refill cartridges. Juulâs popularity among young people also has dropped. A federal study released in September showed that Juul was the No. 4 brand among high school vapers, after Puff Bar, Vuse and Smok.In its submission to the FDA, Juul submitted two flavorsâmenthol and Virginia Tobaccoâin two nicotine strengths, 3% and 5%. The companyâs application amounted to more than 125,000 pages, including scientific research, marketing materials and an update on its efforts to curb illegal sales to minors. Juul also pitched a new device designed to unlock only for users at least 21 years old.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":312,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9057332295,"gmtCreate":1655463260917,"gmtModify":1676535644580,"author":{"id":"3559086518230868","authorId":"3559086518230868","name":"Everythingibuygoesupppwinbigbig","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9d617261b5761f846aa77f568df27373","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3559086518230868","authorIdStr":"3559086518230868"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"đđ»đđ»đđ»","listText":"đđ»đđ»đđ»","text":"đđ»đđ»đđ»","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9057332295","repostId":"1115493440","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"1115493440","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com ending ","content":"
AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. appointed former BHP Group executive Alberto Calderon to its top job, ending a nearly year-long head hunt thatâs weighed on the shares of the No. 3 gold producer.
\n
Calderon, a 61-year-old Colombian who once served as a junior minister in a government that fought drug lord Pablo Escobar, will join AngloGold on Sept. 1. The Ivy League economist, who was in the running to become chief executive officer at BHP before the position went to Andrew Mackenzie, served as CEO of Melbourne-based explosives maker Orica Ltd. until February.
\n
AngloGold hasnât had a permanent CEO since Kelvin Dushniskyâs abrupt departure last September after holding the position for just two years. The Johannesburg-based minerâs shares have underperformed peers in the past year as the CEO hunt dragged on and the company had to suspend operations at a mine in Ghana. While Calderonâs experience lies in industrial metals, coal and oil, his background may help AngloGold to advance its key expansion projects in Colombia.
\n
âItâs not going to be easy, but I hope I can explain what a world class mining company like AngloGold can do,â Calderon said in a video interview, commenting on his task of getting the Colombian authorities to approve the minerâs Quebradona and Gramalote projects. âI think I have a good chance of persuading them.â
\n
AngloGoldâs shares climbed as much as 5.8% in Johannesburg, the most in seven weeks. That pared the stockâs losses over the past 12 months to 42%.
\n
While AngloGold emerged from a mining empire created by Ernest Oppenheimer a century ago, it sold its remaining South African operations last year to focus on more profitable mines elsewhere in Africa, Australia and the Americas. The new CEO may face questions about whether the company could finally move its primary listing from Johannesburg -- an idea thatâs been bandied about for years.
\n
âItâs not the immediate priority for me but itâs something that in due time the board and myself will consider again and give our views to the market,â Calderon said.
\n
A potential London listing is among the options that Calderon will consider as he tries to close the discount at which AngloGold trades to larger rivals Newmont Corp. and Barrick Gold Corp.
\n
âIf we can bring credibility back to our projects, be more predictable in our production and cost focus, if we are seen as the excellent operators that we are, I think we can bring a lot of that discount value back into this company and thatâs my plan,â he said.
\n
Calderon will take over from interim CEO Christine Ramon, who will return to her previous position as AngloGoldâs chief financial officer. During her time at the helm, Ramon sketched out a plan to expand output at key operations in Tanzania, Ghana and Guinea, while potentially investing more than $2 billion in two new mines in Colombia from 2022.
\n
Leadership Experience
\n
Calderon, who gained experience of South Africa during his time as head of BHPâs aluminum business, was CEO of both Cerrejon Coal Co. and Ecopetrol in his home country of Colombia. Prior to that, he held leadership positions at the International Monetary Fund.
\n
âItâs an excellent appointment, and it removes uncertainties about the leadership crisis,â said Rene Hochreiter, an analyst at Noah Capital Ltd. In Colombia, âhe can probably get things done better than say an American or South African,â he said.
\n
Calderonâs six years at Orica coincided with a difficult period for the company. The explosives maker had to contend with a steep rise in the price of natural gas, itâs main input cost, and more recently Oricaâs profits hit by the Covid-19 economic slowdown and Chinaâs ban on Australian coal imports. Orica shares fell by more than a third during Calderonâs tenure.
\n
AngloGold joined rivals in increasing its dividend after record gold prices boosted earnings last year, but producers have had to work hard to retain investor interest this year as bullionâs rally sputtered.
\n
The new CEO must also get the companyâs key Ghana mine back on track after underground operations at Obuasi were suspended in May following the death of a worker. That setback will curb output this year, just as the mine was ramping up following a $545 million redevelopment.
\n
âWe have the right person to lead this company forward and realize its outstanding potential, drawing on his huge leadership experience in the resources sector across a variety of geographies,â said AngloGold Chairman Maria Ramos said in the statement.
\n
What Bloomberg Intelligence Says
\n
âAngloGoldâs appointment of experienced mining executive Alberto Calderon as CEO is a good starting point for the company to narrow the valuation gap with many of its gold-mining peers. While the market may take a âwait and seeâ approach given Calderonâs lack of specific gold-mining background, the combination of his recent Australian-based role and his Colombian heritage fits in well with the geographical spread of AngloGoldâs assets and the companyâs growth ambitions.â
","source":"lsy1612507957220","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
AngloGold Names CEO as No. 3 Gold Miner Eyes Colombia Growth
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nAngloGold Names CEO as No. 3 Gold Miner Eyes Colombia Growth\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-06 21:28 GMT+8 Bloomberg\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. appointed former BHP Group executive Alberto Calderon to its top job, ending a nearly year-long head hunt thatâs weighed on the shares of the No. 3 gold producer.\nCalderon, a 61...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{},"source_url":"https://finance.yahoo.com/news/no-3-gold-miner-anglogold-064803124.html","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1115183227","content_text":"AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. appointed former BHP Group executive Alberto Calderon to its top job, ending a nearly year-long head hunt thatâs weighed on the shares of the No. 3 gold producer.\nCalderon, a 61-year-old Colombian who once served as a junior minister in a government that fought drug lord Pablo Escobar, will join AngloGold on Sept. 1.

The companyâs application amounted to more than 125,000 pages, including scientific research, marketing materials and an update on its efforts to curb illegal sales to minors. economically sensitive groups as worries persisted about a potential recession.

The benchmark S&P 500 swung between positive and negative during the session, but stocks picked up steam heading into the market's close. Benchmark U.S. Treasury yields fell to two-week lows, supporting tech and other rate-sensitive growth stocks.

Trading has remained volatile in the wake of the S&P 500 last week logging its biggest weekly percentage drop since March 2020. Investors are weighing how far stocks could fall after the index earlier this month fell over 20% from its January all-time high, confirming the common definition of a bear market.

âThere is a tremendous amount of uncertainty about the outlook and so the market is confused,â said Walter Todd, chief investment officer at Greenwood Capital in South Carolina.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 194.23 points, or 0.64%, to 30,677.36, the S&P 500 gained 35.84 points, or 0.95%, to 3,795.73 and the Nasdaq Composite added 179.11 points, or 1.62%, to 11,232.19.

In his second day of testifying before Congress, U.S. central bank chief Jerome Powell said the Fed's commitment to reining in 40-year-high inflation is "unconditional" but also comes with the risk of higher unemployment.

U.S. business activity slowed considerably in June as high inflation and declining consumer confidence dampened demand across the board, a survey on Thursday showed.

âThe Fed wants to see things start to slow and the data is starting to reflect that,â said James Ragan, director of wealth management research atD.A. Davidson.

Citigroup analysts are forecasting a near 50% probability of a global recession.

âEconomic growth is slowing. Is it going to slow enough to go into a recession, thatâs the big question,â Ragan said.

Defensive groups considered safer bets in rocky economic times were the top-performing S&P 500 sectors. Benchmark U.S. Treasury yields fell to two-week lows, supporting tech and other rate-sensitive growth stocks.Trading has remained volatile in the wake of the S&P 500 last week logging its biggest weekly percentage drop since March 2020. Investors are weighing how far stocks could fall after the index earlier this month fell over 20% from its January all-time high, confirming the common definition of a bear market.âThere is a tremendous amount of uncertainty about the outlook and so the market is confused,â said Walter Todd, chief investment officer at Greenwood Capital in South Carolina. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 194.23 points, or 0.64%, to 30,677.36, the S&P 500 gained 35.84 points, or 0.95%, to 3,795.73 and the Nasdaq Composite added 179.11 points, or 1.62%, to 11,232.19.In his second day of testifying before Congress, U.S. central bank chief Jerome Powell said the Fed's commitment to reining in 40-year-high inflation is \"unconditional\" but also comes with the risk of higher unemployment.U.S. business activity slowed considerably in June as high inflation and declining consumer confidence dampened demand across the board, a survey on Thursday showed.âThe Fed wants to see things start to slow and the data is starting to reflect that,â said James Ragan, director of wealth management research atD.A. Davidson.Citigroup analysts are forecasting a near 50% probability of a global recession.âEconomic growth is slowing. Is it going to slow enough to go into a recession, thatâs the big question,â Ragan said.Defensive groups considered safer bets in rocky economic times were the top-performing S&P 500 sectors. Among them, utilities gained 2.4%, healthcare rose 2.2% and real estate added 2%.The heavyweight tech sector rose 1.4%, with Microsoft gaining 2.3% and Apple up 2.2%.The energy sector slumped 3.8%, continuing its recent pullback after soundly outperforming the market for most of 2022. Despite its youth and relatively small size in terms of global EV sales, NIO looks like it could one day be one of the most relevant companies in the EV sector. NIO is much more than just an EV car manufacturer, as it is also one of the most innovative companies in the space. Revolutions in charging technology and proprietary software should help NIO establish a moat, a unique selling point and can potentially create new revenue sources.
\n
BaaS: Another Layer of Revenue
\n
I have already talked extensively about NIOâs core business in previous articles. Today, Iâd like to start by focusing on the implications behind one NIOâs signature characteristic: Battery-as-a-Service. (BaaS)
\n
Granted, many articles have already covered this topic too. Normally though, these focus on BaaS vs regular charging, or how BaaS technology can make NIO cars more appealing. However, in this section, I am focusing on the implications BaaS can have on NIOâs revenue, as a completely separate business, which it could one day be.
\n
NIOâs BaaS offerings have come a very long way since the company first initiated this idea. In April, the company reached a deal with Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Company Limited(NYSE:SHI)to create a vast network of battery swap stations. NIO aims to have over 5000 stations by 2024. Furthermore, the latest iteration of the BaaS charging system allows car-owners to swap the battery for a fully charged one in minutes and without even needing to exit their car. BaaS is the fastest way to achieve the level of convenience we have when refueling traditional gas cars, and it may perhaps be the only way.
\n
So, the question is; Can NIO monetize its BaaS, and if so how would this look? The short answer to this question is yes. Ford Motors, Inc(NYSE:F)has already entered a deal with NIO to make use of NIOâs charging infrastructure.
\n
Having said this, charging stations today are for the most part unprofitable. But these work a bit different from NIOâs BaaS system. A big problem with regular charging stations is that their cost of electricity is much higher than what you would pay if you charged your car at home during the night. BaaS, however, works around this, since the replacement batteries could be charged anywhere. On top of that, what we do know is that NIO will stand to benefit a lot more from this line of business thanks to government subsidies. It has been openly stated by the CCP that China is moving away from consumer-focused subsidies, in favour of infrastructure based subsidies.
\n
Itâs still early days, but if BaaS takes off, and other producers focus on this model, NIO could stand to gain a lot from this by being a source of infrastructure and technology. For example, NIO could play a key role in providing the necessary charging infrastructure for Europe, a market which it is just recently entering.
\n
NIO: Monetizing knowledge
\n
The other key area where NIO excels, and many may not realize it, is technology and knowledge. Letâs make this clear with some numbers.
\n
According to data from Tencent Tech, NIO has 2768 patents in China, 204 in Europe and 193 patents in the United States. 1208 of the patents held in China are âinnovation patentsâ. This is a significant fact, because âinnovation patentsâ as classified by the Chinese are the ones whose content can be considered âgroundbreakingâ. To put these numbers into perspective, NIO holds more patents than rivals like Li Auto Inc.(NASDAQ:LI)and Xpeng Inc [XVEP].
\n
Diving deeper into these patents, we can see that most of these patents are related to the above-mentioned battery swap technology. Another hot topic of research today is autonomous driving. In this field, NIO has 47 patents, 64% of which are still pending. This is quite a small number if we compare it to Baidu, Inc(NASDAQ:BIDU), which boasts 632 patents. Lastly, I will note that I think one of the most successful areas where NIO is innovating is in terms of design and user interface/software. For example, the NIO ET7 features an `intelligent cockpitâ, which is powered by NOMI, NIOâs artificial intelligence.
\n
What I am trying to say is that perhaps what some see as NIOâs weakness, could be one of its biggest strengths. Many analysts seem to have a problem with the fact that NIO doesnât make its cars, but this aspect of the car business is becoming less and less relevant. The CEO of NVIDIA Corporation(NASDAQ:NVDA) has been quoted as saying that by 2025, cars will be sold at cost price, and it will be software sales that will provide these manufacturers revenue.
\n
It seems like the traditional car is going the way of smartphones. Putting together the components is perhaps the least important of the value-adding activities here. Whatâs most relevant is the operating system and the value of the brand. NIO shines in both of these areas, and this is perhaps another way in which we could say NIO is quite similar to Apple Inc(NASDAQ:AAPL).
\n
Valuation
\n
I believe the above are two strong points that highlight that NIO has potential way beyond the production of cars. Having said this, it is very hard to quantify how these advancements in innovation will change NIOâs revenues and profitability in the future. What I propose here is a valuation where we value NIO at its most basic level, through revenues achieved from car sales. However, I will defend that the P/S multiple will remain much higher than that of its âpeersâ given the reasons stated above.
\n
Now, letâs start with revenues and sales. At its most core level, we can predict NIOâs revenues by looking at how many cars it will produce in the next few years, and we have a good idea of what this could be. Recently, NIO renewed its manufacturing agreement with Jianghuai Automobile Group [JAC]. Supposedly, the company will be doubling its production capacity to around 240.000 units per year, at least until May 2024.
\n
Therefore, a very simple forecast of NIOâs revenues could be made based on this simple production fact. In the next 3 years, NIO will have the capacity to produce 720.000 new cars. Will they be able to sell them all? In 2020, NIO sold 43,728 vehicles. Forwards growth estimates have NIO doubling in revenue in the next year, which, assuming all revenues come from car sales and the price stays the same, would mean selling 87.456 units. If we pulled back growth to around 80% for 2022 and 50% for 2023, we would have corresponding sales of 157,420 and 236,132. This kind of growth is close to current estimates, and fits in quite nicely with NIOâs plans, since it seems like, by the end of this period, when the manufacturing agreement ends, NIO would be selling at near full capacity. The important point I am trying to make here is that given this recent deal, investors should not be worried about NIOâs production constraints. Furthermore, it doesnât seem like NIO will struggle from the demand side, especially as it plans to enter the European EV market.
\n
Now, the second point I will argue in this valuation, is that, given the changes in how the EV sector is shaping up, we should not apply industry multiples to a stock like NIO. In my previous article on the company, I did this and forecasted a price for 2030 of up to $400/share. However, a case can be made that NIO should command a premium in valuation. This is because the company is, quite literally, not making cars. Rather, itâs developing a brand, proprietary technology and also changing how we think about charging.
\n
Creating batteries for cars is a business in and of itself. A successful company in this sector is Contemporary Amperex Technology [CATL]. According to data from Market Screener, this company has an operating margin of 13%, grew revenues by 250% last year and trades at a P/E of 114 and a P/S of around 25.
\n
On the other hand, as car manufacturers begin to focus on delivering cars with an integrated operating system and software, we may see companyâs like NIO trade at valuation multiples more in line with that of SaaS companies. Companies that sell software, like Adobe, Inc.(NASDAQ:ADBE)or Salesforce.com(NYSE:CRM)trade at P/S multiples of 15-20.
\n
If NIO were to sell 236,132 cars in 2023-2024 at an average price of $57,000, it would bring in $13,440 million in revenue. Assuming no dilution, this would imply roughly $10.25 of revenue/share. Given the fact that NIO could also begin to monetize its BaaS offerings, and that the company could even license its software and technology to other players, I feel like todayâs P/S of 17 should be maintained, if not expanded. Growth may slow down, but we have to put a value on the assets NIO has in the form of patents and technology.
\n
In conclusion, my price target for NIO would be $174/share by the end of 2023.
\n
Risks
\n
Having said this, there are some potential risks that the company faces in todayâs environment. Firstly, and even though I see this mostly as a strength, not having its own manufacturing facilities can be seen as a disadvantage. If push comes to shove, JAC could refuse to honour their manufacturing contract, though I am sure this would be expensive.
\n
On another note, it is still not clear how widely adopted BaaS technology will be. Traditional charging spots are getting more advanced and, thanks to renewable sources of energy, such as solar, these charging stations could soon provide much more competitive charging rates. Clearly, NIO will have to partner up with other manufacturers to make BaaS a worldwide reality.
\n
Lastly, it is worth mentioning that, despite the high growth and improving profitability, it is very much on the cards to see further shareholder dilution, something which the valuation above did not account for.
\n
Takeaway
\n
NIOâs success over the last few years will ultimately be what makes the company successful in the future. NIO has found a way to innovate left, right and centre. It has changed the concept of charging through BaaS. It has also executed this innovation by building battery swap stations that are incredibly fast. It has innovated in terms of software and style, and I do not doubt that the company will continue to do so in the future. Ultimately, NIO is much more than an EV manufacturer and should be valued as such.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
NIO: One EV Company To Rule Them All
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNIO: One EV Company To Rule Them All\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-15 09:57 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nNIO has unique characteristics that make it a superior player in the EV sector.\nThe company could find new avenues of monetization through BaaS and software licensing.\nNIO commands high ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"NIO":"èæ„"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4434788-nio-one-ev-company-to-rule-them-all","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1140305126","content_text":"Summary\n\nNIO has unique characteristics that make it a superior player in the EV sector.\nThe company could find new avenues of monetization through BaaS and software licensing.\nNIO commands high valuation multiples and should continue to do so in the future. US growth and rising inflation), as well as beneficiaries of the faster-than-expected re-opening in Europe,â the bankâs analysts wrote in a note published Wednesday. The bank added stocks to its âBest Ideas List,â some of which it said were set for a particularly strong bounce and positive growth. âThe companies range from airlines to online fashion retail to healthcare supplies and insurance,â the analysts, led by Jill Carey Hall, wrote.BofAâs âbestâ stock picks include:Luxury and retailLuxury online fashion retailerFarfetchis a pick for the bank, which said it is âa good way to gain exposure to North America and especially the U.S., which is the groupâs single largest country exposure.â It comes as the bank noted a sharp rise in demand for luxury goods in March. The bank also picked ecommerce retailerAsosand duty-free operatorDufry.FoodBofA likes salmon supplierAtlantic Sapphireas it is building a large-scale land-based farm in Miami â making it the first local producer for the U.S. market. The bank also pickedAAK, a Swedish specialist producer of fats and oils, which it said is tapping into a U.S. trend for plant-based foods as well as a rise in chocolate consumption.Airlines and aerospaceBritish Airways-ownerIAGis a pick for BofA as it âcould see a strong swing in both sentiment and earnings momentum as the economy opens up.â Europe is set to be the most popular travel destination for Americans once travel restrictions are lifted, according to a survey the bank carried out in March, which is set to benefit the airline stock. German aircraft engine manufacturerMTU Aero Enginesis also a pick.Metals and manufacturingGerman steel and engineering firmThyssenkruppis set to benefit from a V-shaped recovery after the coronavirus pandemic, BofAâs analysts said. âThere are discussions about a potential lifting of US tariffs on European metals.
