Another huge factor is that overall energy costs are lower, and maintenance costs are as well.</p>\n<p>The U.S. president has set a goal for half of all new U.S. vehicle sales to be electric by 2030, while also tightening pollution standards for cars and trucks in a barrage of action aimed at reducing what many feel is the largest source of planet-heating gases in America. Last week, the White House outlined its plan to cut emissions from vehicles, with President Biden signing an executive order demanding that 50% of all new cars and trucks sold by the end of the decade be powered by electric batteries.</p>\n<p>While that goal is extremely optimistic, and perhaps very unlikely, the adoption of the EV future is going full-speed ahead. The analysts at Jefferies think three top companies are poised to be huge winners. They noted this in a recent research report:</p>\n<blockquote>\n We believe Auto original equipment manufacturers can transition into an EV driven industry of connected products while also operating with less and better allocated capital. We think this could lead to a re-rating of Auto OEMs’ valuation multiples. Investment spending has already started to stabilize, if not decline as OEMs:1) Increasingly re-allocate spending from internal; combustion engine vehicles to fund electric vehicles and software investment.2) Build vertical integration for electrification partly through joint investments off the balance sheet.3) Electric Vehicle development costs benefit from higher modularity and scale.The analyst points out that auto inventories are at record lows; re-building them to dealer/OEM “optimal” levels in 45-60 days would add 1.3 to 2.1 million units, 8-11% of North American output, supporting pricing well into 2022 and structural change.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Jefferies thinks the stocks of these three companies are poised to benefit as well and rates them all at Buy. Remember though that no single analyst call should ever be used as a basis to buy or sell a stock.</p>\n<p>Ford</p>\n<p>The venerable American automaker is poised to be a big EV player, and management has rebuilt the legacy car company in recent years. Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) designs, manufactures, markets and services a range of Ford trucks, cars, sport utility vehicles, electrified vehicles, and Lincoln luxury vehicles worldwide.</p>\n<p>It operates through three segments. The Automotive segment sells Ford and Lincoln vehicles, service parts and accessories through distributors and dealers, as well as through dealerships to commercial fleet customers, daily rental car companies and governments.&nbsp;The Mobility segment designs and builds mobility services, and it provides self-driving systems development services.</p>\n<p>The Ford Credit segment primarily engages in vehicle-related financing and leasing activities to and through automotive dealers. It provides retail installment sale contracts for new and used vehicles and direct financing leases for new vehicles to retail and commercial customers, such as leasing companies, government entities, daily rental companies and fleet customers.</p>\n<p>Ford made a stunning $1.1 billion in adjusted earnings before interest and taxes for the second quarter, a big swing from the same period last year when the company reported a $1.9 billion loss. The company also reported that adjusted earnings for the full year would come in between $9 billion and $10 billion, a massive boost from its prior forecast of around $5.5 billion, and it said sales could rise as much as 30% compared to first-half volumes. These figures were not lost on the Jefferies team.</p>\n<p>Ford, which is investing $22 billion in EVs, has announced that 40% of its vehicles will be electrified by 2030, generating excitement with the recent debut of the F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup.</p>\n<p>The Jefferies price target for Ford stock is $17. That compares with the lower $14.98 Wall Street consensus target and Monday’s closing print of $13.75.</p>\n<p>Lithia Motors</p>\n<p>This stock could be a very good idea for accounts wanting to participate. Lithia Motors Inc. (NYSE: LAD) operates as an automotive retailer in the United States. The company offers new and used vehicles; vehicle financing services; warranties, insurance contracts and vehicle and theft protection services; and automotive repair and maintenance services. It also sells vehicle body and parts. As of February 19, 2021, the company operated through 210 stores. It also offers its products online through 200 websites.</p>\n<p>Jefferies likes where the company is positioned and noted this earlier this summer:</p>\n<p>We see Lithia Motors as best positioned in an environment of increasing EV penetration as the company’s strong history in ICE parts and service operations (10% of sales, 32% of gross profit) gives us confidence in a successful battery power electric vehicle (BEV) ramp, while simultaneously a larger share of vehicle service is likely to shift to better-capitalized franchised dealers regardless of powertrain technology. Additionally, we believe the company’s legacy store base in the rural West/ Northwest is less prone to see near-term BEV disruption from lower maintenance/ service spend, as longer travel distances and limited charging infrastructure are likely headwinds to regional BEV adoption. In “expansion markets,” in central/east and southern states, we expect LAD will continue to gain share as digital selling initiatives expand market penetration well beyond “traditional” stores’ reach.</p>\n<p>With a current growth goal to increase revenue from $13 billion (in 2020) to $50 billion in 2025, we see Lithia Motors aggressive M&amp;A (acquired $7.5 billion in annualized sales in the trailing 12 months) and omnichannel sales initiatives bringing operating expertise and online selling reach to a national scale, likely at the expense of smaller incumbents.</p>\n<p>Investors receive a 0.39% dividend. Jefferies has a $406 price target, but the consensus target is up at $455.55. Lithia Motors stock closed on Monday at $363.08.</p>\n<p>Tesla</p>\n<p>The obvious starting point for investors is the EV pioneer. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) designs, develops, manufactures, leases and sells electric vehicles, and energy-generation and storage systems in the United States, China and elsewhere. Its Automotive segment offers electric vehicles, as well as sells automotive regulatory credits. The Energy Generation and Storage segment engages in the design, manufacture, installation, sale and leasing of solar energy generation and energy storage products, as well as related services, to residential, commercial and industrial customers and utilities.</p>\n<p>Jefferies said this about the EV giant earlier this year:</p>\n<blockquote>\n For the past decade, Tesla has led the way in building charging infrastructure, which was particularly critical to position EVs as a true alternative to ICE vehicles in terms of range and long-distance driving. Opening the Tesla network to other brands has been a recurring topic, in the US and more recently in Germany.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Jefferies upgraded Tesla stock to Buy this week, also lifting its price target to $850 from $775. The consensus target is just $652.52, but the shares were last seen trading at $688.72.</p>\n<p>Many expect the EV market to dominate by as early as 2035. That prompted him to dial down the risk taking to comparatively sedate activities such as bungee jumping, yacht racing and a 2,000-kilometer triathlon.</p>\n<p>But the race to establish the world’s first space-tourism venture has revived the aging entrepreneur’s buccaneering spirit. After the announcement last month thatAmazon.com Inc.founder Jeff Bezos would ride on rocket made by his Blue Origin company on July 20, Branson declared that he’d be aboard aVirgin Galactic Holdings Inc.test flight nine days earlier -- a week before he turns 71.</p>\n<p>Will Whitehorn, a former president of Virgin Galactic who helped establish the company, said the move is typical of Branson, whose mantra of “Screw It, Let’s Do It” and a propensity to approve even the most challenging projects led staff to nickname him “Dr. Yes.”</p>\n<p>“Richard is not a fearful person, but he’s also a thoughtful person,” Whitehorn, now president of the UKspace trade association, said in an interview. “He would not be going if he did not believe that this was safe. And if he manages to beat Jeff Bezos, good luck to him.”</p>\n<p>The decision to fly followed approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration for Virgin Galactic to carry fee-paying passengers.</p>\n<p>“You can’t expect scientists and space tourists to go if the boss is not prepared to,” Whitehorn said.</p>\n<p><b>Deadly Crash</b></p>\n<p>Branson will journey in Virgin’s VSS Unity spaceplane, itself carried aloft by a so-called mothership aircraft, in a trip that’s expected to take about 90 minutes from takeoff to landing. After being released from the carrier plane, the Unity will ignite a rocket engine to propel it to a height of 55 miles above Earth.</p>\n<p>That’s beyond the boundary recognized by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration as the edge of space, although short of the Karman Line, an internationally recognized space frontier at 62 miles from the planet.</p>\n<p>The same Virgin Galactic spacecraft model suffered a crash that killed a test pilot in 2014, when a descent mechanism was triggered with the rocket still climbing. The company did an extensive design modification to prevent that from happening again.</p>\n<p>Chief Executive Officer Michael Colglazier said earlier this month that the company is ready for Branson’s trip after a successful test flight in May.</p>\n<p>Branson, who was knighted in 1999 by Queen Elizabeth II for “services to entrepreneurship,” has a net worth of about $7.5 billion according to theBloomberg Billionaires Index. More than 40 Virgin-brand businesses collect annual revenue of about $22 billion through partnerships, affiliations and direct holdings, a spokeswoman said in December. As with Virgin Galactic, he has typically left day-to-day management to hired executives.</p>\n<p>His business career -- spanning everything from a punk record label to gyms, bridal wear, bank accounts, a mobile phone provider and the airline for which he’s been best known -- has been as varied as his extra-curricular activities.</p>\n<p>After running a student magazine at the age of 16, his first serious foray into commerce was through a mail-order music distributor and shop that got him a costly conviction for tax evasion. Undeterred, he went on to found Virgin Records in 1972, with the name chosen to reflect his inexperience in business.</p>\n<p><b>Empire Building</b></p>\n<p>The label was an immediate success as Tubular Bells, the debut album from instrumentalist Mike Oldfield, became a best seller. The company went on to sign artists including the Rolling Stones and the Sex Pistols, the latter helping to enhance Branson’s image as an outsider, earning enough money to bankroll the foundation ofVirgin Atlantic Airways Ltd.in 1984.</p>\n<p>Amid a pattern of selling off all or parts of his various businesses, Branson had an unqualified success with Virgin Mobile, offloaded toNTL:Telewestfor almost 1 billion pounds ($1.4 billion) in 2006, and the subsequent sale of the combinedVirgin MediatoLiberty Globalfor $23 billion in 2013.</p>\n<p>Failures have included a doomed attempt by Virgin Cola to oustCoca-ColaandPepsias the leading U.S. soft drinks, and the condom line Mates, sold off just a year after its launch.</p>\n<p>Plans for an air-launched spaceship were first mooted at Virgin as long ago as 1995, according to Whitehorn, who says he, Branson and Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin drafted out the concept on a napkin. Virgin Galactic had a market value of more than $12 billion at the close on Thursday in New York.</p>\n<p>The listing in turn helped Branson save Virgin Atlantic when the coronavirus pandemic hit. The U.K. government declined to provide the grounded carrier with state aid, partly as a result of his residence on Necker Island, a tax haven he bought in 1978 in the appropriately named British Virgin Islands. It uses the personal-consumption expenditures deflator instead of the consumer-price index because PCE is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation and to make better comparisons with spending data.</p>\n<p>It shows that most items have moved backward and forward along the horizontal axis, implying that prices have shown little sensitivity to changes in demand, Vernazza explained. And for service sectors hit particuarly hard by the pandemic, including airfares and accommodation, the reopening of the econony has led to only a partial recovery of prices, which are still not back to pre-pandemic levels.</p>\n<p>It's a somewhat different story for car rentals, where acute supply shortages have caused prices to surge, while spending in the sector remains well below pre-pandemic levels because of limited supply. For used cars, the combination of a switch away from public transport by commuters and a global shortage of semiconductors for new cars has pushed up both demand and prices, he said..</p>\n<p>What's important to note, Vernazza said, is that since higher inflation is largely explained by the reopening of the economy and supply shortages, it's likely to prove temporary as the direct effects of the pandemic fade and supply adjusts to meet demand.</p>\n<p>But what would a more enduring inflation threat look like?</p>\n<p>In that case, most of the items would occupy the upper-right quadrant of the chart, reflecting what economists refer to as \"demand-pull inflation,\" Vernazza said. To date, \"this is clearly not the case,\" the economist wrote.</p>\n<p>While inflation jitters rattled financial markets as recently as last month, investor concerns have appeared to wane. Stocks rallied Thursday, with the S&amp;P 500 edging to a record close on Thursday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average remains not far off its all-time high and rallying tech shares, which are more sensitive to interest rates, pushed the Nasdaq Composite higher.</p>\n<p>The Federal Reserve holds a policy meeting next week. It uses the personal-consumption expenditures deflator instead of the consumer-price index because PCE is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation and to make better comparisons with spending data.</p>\n<p>It shows that most items have moved backward and forward along the horizontal axis, implying that prices have shown little sensitivity to changes in demand, Vernazza explained. And for service sectors hit particuarly hard by the pandemic, including airfares and accommodation, the reopening of the econony has led to only a partial recovery of prices, which are still not back to pre-pandemic levels.</p>\n<p>It's a somewhat different story for car rentals, where acute supply shortages have caused prices to surge, while spending in the sector remains well below pre-pandemic levels because of limited supply. For used cars, the combination of a switch away from public transport by commuters and a global shortage of semiconductors for new cars has pushed up both demand and prices, he said..</p>\n<p>What's important to note, Vernazza said, is that since higher inflation is largely explained by the reopening of the economy and supply shortages, it's likely to prove temporary as the direct effects of the pandemic fade and supply adjusts to meet demand.</p>\n<p>But what would a more enduring inflation threat look like?</p>\n<p>In that case, most of the items would occupy the upper-right quadrant of the chart, reflecting what economists refer to as \"demand-pull inflation,\" Vernazza said. To date, \"this is clearly not the case,\" the economist wrote.</p>\n<p>While inflation jitters rattled financial markets as recently as last month, investor concerns have appeared to wane.
