Wor","content":"

Ten years after The collapse of Lehman Brothers, On September 12, 2018, CNBC premiered The original documentary \"Crisis On Wall Street: The Week That Shook The World\".

In this documentary, CNBC anchor Andrew Ross Sorkin, author of the bestselling book \"Too Big to Fail,\" interviews many of the people at the center of the storm at the time, attempting to show the public how the United States and the world in 2008 came close to a full-blown economic collapse, leading to the worst financial crisis in generations.

The documentary is a series of gripping interviews. The top U.S. government officials interviewed, as well as the CEOs of major U.S. banks, had gathered together to try to save Lehman Brothers from bankruptcy.

Wall Street CEOs Jamie Dimon, John Thain, and others described dramatic, all-weather negotiations. Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson recounts the desperate moment he realized Lehman's collapse could bring down the global financial system.

Will a financial crisis of this magnitude happen again? Sorkin repeatedly asked this question to those who had reunited because of the documentary. They recall the nightmares they faced ten years ago, when they shared the same breath as the fate of finance worldwide.

The protagonist of this article is Warren Buffett.

When banks began to collapse in 2008, executives turned to Buffett for financial support in times of crisis. Later, he called this event \"the Pearl Harbor incident of the American economy\".

In the interview, Buffett discussed some details of the crisis process, the interconnected impact of regulation, institutions, and markets, andBerkshireThey discussed their own considerations, including their grasp of human nature, which was quite interesting.

He said,\"When people are afraid, panic occurs. Confidence is built step by step, but fear is immediate.”

\"A crisis always comes at some point.\"But I don't worry about crises because I manage my behavior well.”

This documentary was released in 2018, ten years after the crisis. This perfect timeline makes Buffett's retrospective and reflections even more relevant to the present.

Especially inSilicon Valley BankThe bankruptcy triggered a chain reaction that spread from the United States to...AtlanticOn the other sideCredit SuisseThis has spread investor concerns about the stability of the banking systems in Europe and the United States.

At this point, looking back at Buffett's way of thinking during the 2008 crisis, the weight he gave to decision-making information, and his consistent investment principles will be very inspiring.

Eason's translation is very enjoyable to read, and I hope everyone will find it helpful.

\"This is the largest financial behavior in history, but it turns out that all the participants behaved poorly.\"

Sorkin:Going back to 2008, looking at the big picture, what do you think led to the 2008 crisis?

Buffett:Numerous tributaries converge to form the Missouri River. (But I think the most important factor is that) people think housing will only go up and not down, and the residential market has reached $2 trillion. This is a very large asset class.

People used it as currency (through asset securitization), but then they discovered that it didn't rise all the way up.

They raised debts through real estate, which influenced the event from beginning to end of this rope.

The people at the top of the rope were busy issuing mortgages on properties they knew they didn't need to hold, which they could immediately package and sell to investors as far away as Norway.

Some people refinance through these loans, and it seems to have no impact on them whether the mortgage borrower's monthly payments are too high or whether they have overstated their income.

The people who provide them with refinancing are also involved.

Essentially, there is a huge speculative behavior in real estate. Of the 75 million American homebuyers, 50 million were involved in mortgage lending, while only 25 million were spared the impact. Fifty million borrowing households acquired homes through leverage, and many depended on it for survival, while their asset prices collapsed.

This was the largest financial behavior in history, but it turned out that all the participants behaved poorly.

They believed (that property prices only go up, not down), and this is what happens when people believe something absurd.

Sorkin:Were you worried when some hedge funds that held subprime loans collapsed in early 2008? Do you remember how you felt?

Buffett:I'm not worried. Because I always assume that if you spend your whole life involved in the American economy, its value will increase significantly over time, but it will also come with some bumps and bumps.

Our economic system dictates that we will experience some cyclical madness, so I never try to predict the market, nor do I predict business (the future direction). I just try to adapt to everything that happens.

In the summer of 2008, I did receive a call from a top Wall Street firm trying to sell us tens of billions (many, many, many billions) of Freddie Mac stock. I know something might be wrong.

“I wrote down the page number where I found the problem on the homepage, and I knew we would not invest in it (Lehman).”

Sorkin:I don't know if you remember that after Bear Stearns collapsed and before Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae did, you received a call from Richard Dick Fuld (Chairman and CEO of Lehman Brothers) telling you that his stock was being targeted by short sellers.

Buffett:Yes, I highly doubt anyone who says that to me. I like people who short Berkshire Hathaway. How could a short seller hurt you?

Sorkin:Fuld said you had an investment opportunity of 3-5 billion. Were you interested at the time?

Buffett:I am interested in listening to his speech.

Sorkin:How did you reply to him?

Buffett:I told him to tell me your ideas, first tell me your quote, and then I'll know if I'm interested in doing some research on it.

Then he threw out some tentative ideas. In fact, I remember him asking me if I could have Henry \"Hank” Merritt Paulson (then U.S. Treasury Secretary) call me about it.

Hank called me at 67 a.m. Friday morning with some completely unqualified endorsements. He probably hoped I would finance Lehman, but his sales pitch went too far. I think he also realized that this was wrong.

Anyway, that afternoon I flipped through Lehman's 10K report, which was 250-300 pages long. I wrote down the page number where I found the problem on the homepage, and I knew we wouldn't invest in it.

My office still keeps this note.

Sorkin:What did you see?

Buffett:I just saw a lot of things that made me worry about their finances, and what was already happening on Wall Street at the time and probably happening to them.

\"We're probably the best billion-dollar quick buyer.\"

Sorkin:Now we come to \"that weekend\" on September 12, 2008. You're not getting a call from Lehman Brothers, you're getting a call from AIG asking if you'd like to invest $10 billion in it.

Buffett:I told them, don't count on us, I know time is very precious to you, so don't waste it on us. So, at that point, I refused.

Soon after, they returned to our sight. I said at the time, \"I can't solve this problem. We're going to have to pay about $27 billion. We have the financial resources, but I don't know where we're going to go because of it.\"

The reality at the time was that they sent me a lot of material at 8 p.m. on Friday, telling me that they were in crisis.

Sorkin:What do you think it means when they call Warren Buffett?

Buffett:This means that they know that if we see something, we can act very quickly. We're probably the best billion-dollar-level quick buyer.

And in this case, they knew I was very interested in the insurance business. They could go bankrupt in a few days, so they were also very desperate.

\"If I were the Federal Reserve chairman at the time and realized what was happening, I think I would have chosen to intervene regardless of whether I had the ability to do so or not.\"

Sorkin:Many people look back on the crisis and still see the collapse of Lehman Brothers that weekend as a pivotal moment in the crisis, and debate whether the U.S. government should have intervened at that moment. The next morning,New York timesAnd the Wall Street Journal wrote columns praising it (the U.S. government did not intervene).

Buffett:Yes, at the time everyone was thinking, \"Let these Wall Street people go, we've had enough of them.\"

A long time ago, the chairman of the Federal Reserve said that they could do whatever they wanted. This may change to some extent under the Dodd-Frank Act, but...

(Note: The full name of the Dodd-Frank Act is the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, a U.S. federal law passed on July 21, 2010. It is generally considered one of the most important bills enacted during President Obama's term.)

Sorkin:So you think that if the Federal Reserve wanted to intervene, they could have intervened at the time.

Buffett:If I were the chairman of the Federal Reserve at the time and had seen everything happening in the United States, I think I would have chosen to intervene regardless of whether I had the ability to do so or not.

The Supreme Court might arrest me as a criminal, but I think that's what I have to do in the national interest in that role.

Sorkin:So you think the Fed made a mistake?

Buffett:I don't know.

Because they have to promise the public too much. Many people face losing their homes, seeing their assets shrink significantly, and various personal problems.

However, it is very difficult to promise that all AIG employees will be bailed out and the public will be protected.

Sorkin:At the time, how much political pressure was on Hank, the Federal Reserve, and others in need of a bailout.

Buffett:Huge. Bernanke (then chairman of the Federal Reserve), Hank Paulson, Tim Geithner (then president of the New York Federal Reserve), and George Bush were arguing fiercely at the time, but the American people would not buy it.

\"I think the silent hero in the whole event is...\"Bank of AmericaCEO Ken Lewis, he bought Merrill Lynch.

Sorkin:Lehman Brothers went bankrupt, Bank of America bought Merrill Lynch, and AIG got a bailout. But then people began to worry again.General electric、Goldman SachsThe future of Morgan Stanley.

Buffett:After Lehman collapsed, the largest holders of commercial paper were money market funds, and these things fell one after another (like dominoes), and anything Hank and Bernanke did had to consider the reaction from Congress.

Congress did not realize the seriousness of the problem, but Bush did. I didn't vote for him, but he realized the seriousness of the problem, which made me give him a high score.

Sorkin:Later that week, I got a call from Goldman Sachs. Do you remember that call?

Buffett:I remember that phone call. Haha, you'll remember when Goldman Sachs asks you for money.

Sorkin:What were your thoughts at the time?

Buffett:I think the Treasury Department has reliable people in charge, the Federal Reserve has reliable people in charge, and the president is reliable, but Congress worries me. I think Goldman Sachs will be intact, as long as the market is not completely shut down.

I think the silent hero of the whole thing was Ken Lewis (Bank of America CEO) who bought Merrill Lynch on Monday.

I think he got some advice on buying Merrill Lynch for $30 (note: Bank of America actually bought Merrill Lynch for $30 billion at about $29 per share). He made his decision on Saturday and announced the acquisition on Sunday.

At the time, no one knew how much Merrill Lynch was worth, but he said we would pay $30 a share for it, which was a fair price.

(If it doesn't do this,) Merrill Lynch's stock price on Monday might only be 30 cents.

Sorkin:Do you think this is a big mistake?

Buffett:This is not a mistake for the entire financial system. Merrill Lynch also performed very well after being acquired, but at that point, if Bank of America hadn't announced the acquisition on Sunday, it could have been another Lehman Brothers.

In the Lehman moment, if they decided to bail out Lehman, they would have had to tell Merrill Lynch to survive on its own, and the whole thing would have changed.

\"Confidence is built step by step, but fear is immediate.\"

Sorkin:Looking back at that period of history, are there any things you felt you should have done but didn't? What investments did not materialize?

Buffett:I can look back at any week and find something like this.

If we had waited 4-5 months longer, Berkshire Hathaway could have bought many things at a cheaper price. The stock price in March 2009 was much cheaper than in October 2008.

In late October 2008, I wrote a column in the New York Times. In the long run, I was right, but the price was much cheaper four or five months later.

Sorkin:Do you ever think about where the red lines are that this system has taken us so far, but it still takes us back to the Great Depression?

Buffett:If the crisis is not handled properly, it may last longer. But we can always get out of a crisis, and we have already gotten out of a crisis.

At some point, the government must step in to resolve the crisis. There is only one force in the world that can make people deleverage, and there is only one force (referring to government departments). If they fail to do so for some reason, the crisis will arrive.

Sorkin:Can the public and the new generation learn any lessons from this crisis?

Buffett:No. No. Because people always panic, which is why the Federal Reserve was established.

In the 19th century, our country experienced all kinds of panic. When people are afraid, panic occurs. Confidence is built step by step, but fear is immediate.

Moreover, this is not affected by people's intelligence; even if they have a doctoral degree, being afraid is being afraid.

I know some people whose names you might be surprised to hear, who at that time chose to believe only in gold and nothing else.

The power of fear is enormous.

Sorkin:Do you see any connection or impact between the crisis ten years ago and today's politics, government, and institutions?

Buffett:Yes, people's long-term memories. This was also the case in 1929, and it took a long time. When they experience extreme fear, something sticks and gets etched in their minds.

They want to know who caused their fear. They really shouldn't blame themselves either. I mean, everyone shouldn't be required to be a financial expert.

Who would be blamed for falsely reporting some income on the loan application form when buying a house, believing that house prices will continue to rise, and thus refinancing?

Sorkin:So, is anyone responsible for this crisis?

This is also a political issue.

Buffett:Many people have done very stupid things, but I don't think anyone should be (responsible for it). I mean, there are always some people doing something fake.

This is also a political issue.

Buffett:Many people have done very stupid things, but I don't think anyone should be (responsible for it). I mean, there are always some people doing something fake. To some extent, these people are attracted to the real estate market because you can easily make money from it; you can take out a new loan in Bakersfield, California, and then easily sell it to Norway. Then, it becomes a series of contracts, with the value of one security contract based on another.

I once looked at a securitization product, and I had to go through 300,000 pages of material to understand the primary security and the secondary securities based on it, etc. Moreover, for a considerable period of time, everyone was safe and sound, so everyone was used to this method.

This is where the crisis will happen.

“Crises always come at some point, but I’m not worried about them. Because I manage my behavior well.”

Sorkin:Are you worried about another crisis coming?

Buffett:Crisis will always come at some point, but I am not worried about crisis.

Sorkin:And why?

Buffett said that because I managed my behavior well, Berkshire Hathaway would remain very healthy even if another crisis came.。

Sorkin:What are you worried about right now?

Buffett:Rising asset prices attract people who don't understand it at all to the market. People are interested in asset appreciation, but they don't really understand it themselves.

When you think your much dumber neighbor has become rich because of rising asset prices, but you haven't, your spouse will ask you: Can't you figure it out too (and make a lot of money)?

This is just too contagious.

This is a part of the capital system that will always exist. But if you ask me which type of asset is in this state right now, I haven't observed it yet.

Sorkin:Can we better deal with another crisis now?

Buffett:This is an interesting question.

I never read the entire 2000-plus pages of the Dodd-Frank Act; I only read the outline.

I have a view, and my view may be wrong. However, I (do) believe that this bill may prevent the Federal Reserve from handling the crisis quickly and collaboratively.

I would say that this was a terrible mistake. On Wall Street: The Week That Shook The World)。
