Market Sell-Off? Don’t Panic!

“Capricious” would be an apt description of the current market. i guess most tiger friends would agree that changes in the market sentiments can be drastic and often take you by surprise (or shock for those entered new positions at its recent high).  Not too long ago, the market sentiments was bullish as the indices bounced off rapidly from its low. However, the stubbornly strong economic data coupled with recent hawkish Fed remarks just triggered a sell-off for most stocks with tech taking the biggest hit. Sell-offs can be daunting as you see your portfolio dives into the red or your profits getting eroded rapidly. However, it is imperative that one does not panic sell. Most retail investors end up losing money because they buy high and sell low (instead of the re

Keppel Corp - Good Dividend Yield with Upside

I would go for $KEPPEL CORPORATION LIMITED(BN4.SI)$  since the most Tiger friends would choose local banks. The divestment of $SEMBCORP MARINE LTD(S51.SI)$  heralds a new era for Keppel Corp as it continues its journey towards an asset light model. This includes Keppel transforming its Urban Development business, focusing on real-estate-as-service solutions. With the lifting of COVID-19 measures, one may see recovering sentiments and potentially better performance of its Urban Development business. While Keppel’s FY22 net profit is marginally lower than FY21, it is attributed to partial impairment and lower earnings in Urban Dev

If I had extra $100k… I would…

An additional $100k would be a mini dream come true. It will definitely come in handy to defray some of the expenses (with GST raised to 8% and another hike next year [Facepalm] ) With this extra cash, I would first set aside $20k for charity as It is more blessed to give than to receive. While the govt has set aside subsidies for the more needy, the high inflation and GST hikes still have a sizeable impact on the less fortunate/lower income group. Why not spread the love and help these people as well? With the remaining amount, I would set aside $50k - $60k in dividend stocks for my family/parents to generate consistent and steady passive income. This may be REITS with good long-term potential such as $ASCENDAS REAL ESTATE INV TRUST(A17U.SI)$

With renewed optimism on Chinese tourism, a couple of sectors will benefit which includes airlines, hotels, entertainment and retail sector. $SINGAPORE AIRLINES LTD(C6L.SI)$, being the best airline globally, will benefit from easing travel restriction increasing flight frequency to China. Its record operating profit is a testament of airlines being one of the greatest beneficiaries of reopening. Based on Singapore Tourism Board’s insights on Chinese travelers, the predominant activities are shopping, casino and sight-seeing. $GENTING SINGAPORE LIMITED(G13.SI)$ provides a one-stop integrated resort that offers gambling (casino), attractions (Universal Studios, Sea Aquarium) & various dining opt

A pullback seems inevitable especially after a massive rally as well as recent stubborn inflation and hawkish Fed comments. It will not be surprising for slightly larger rate hikes and higher terminal rates since the overall labour market remains strong. I don’t have a hedging strategy in mind. Instead, continue to focus on building a diversified portfolio including those that will thrive or survive in a high interest rate environment. Would definitely avoid companies that are not profitable, and also speculative stocks that will be under immese pressure from the elevated interest rates. Don’t panic sell as long as you are holding onto fundamentally strong companies. Look for the next price level to DCA or enter the next good bargains.
@Tiger_chat:$720 bln Evaporated in a Day! Why is that? How will market move?
It is important that one’s judgment not get clouded by $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$’s massive rally. While Tesla is not entirely related to EVs, one must be cognisant that the competition in the EV industry is intensifying. The recent price cuts is a testament that Tesla recognises it may no longer be able to sustain the premium amidst the competition. Let’s not forget that BYD has even dethroned Tesla as the no. 1 EV seller in China. Tesla has reached a key resistance level, and with the enormous recent rally, we might see Tesla entering a consolidation stage in the coming weeks. The recent hawkish Fed comments post inflation data might spark concerns about higher interest rate which will impact growth stocks such as Tesla. Don’t FOMO, my Tiger fri

I would love to be the CEO of $Microsoft(MSFT)$. It is without doubt that Microsoft has become one of the most essential companies in the world (besides Google). Its suite of productive software has become indispensable for most employees (imagine having to work without any of these products?) Microsoft’s continuous innovation and Azure cloud services have been instrumental in helping corporates on their digital transformation journey. This is further powered by its investment in AI, including the recent massive investment in OpenAI. There are immense opportunities for AI, and it will be exciting to see how AI can benefit organisations and individuals [Grin] Let’s also not forget gaming that Microsoft is also a leader in! Knowledge is Power, Time to Read Up!

As the saying goes, "Knowledge is Power". The more you know, the better you are. This is one of the the reasons why you should never stop learning. While some may opine that knowledge can be obtained through real-life experience and people interaction, reading brings forth many other benefits besides expanding your knowledge.  Personally, I am not a fan of fiction (no offence to those who do!) though they do offer some thrills and entertainment occasionally. Given the limited time due to a busy work schedule, I prefer focusing my reading time on self-help books. Since many of my Tiger friends would be sharing finance/investment related books, Iwill share the other genres instead [Grin]  2 notables titles I would like to read this year are:  1. N

3 Pitfalls to Avoid in the Stock Market

The COVID-19 pandemic has attracted a wave of new investors who may think investing is simple and the stock market is platform to get rich quickly. Some may have probably realised that the market is probably a bigger and way more complex animal than it appears to be as most portfolio get decimated under a rising interest rate environment in 2022.  With 2023 likely to another challenging year as recessionary fears starting to haunt investors, it is critical to know the common pitfalls and be prepared to avoid them.  1. Failing to diversify the portfolio It is human nature to have favourite or preferred companies. Posts containing headers such as "How much you have earned if you invested $xxx in xxx stock" are plastered over social media, and also

Wishing Tiger Brokers and all my fellow Tiger friends a year abundant of joy, good health, properity and wealth!  2022 has been a very challenging year for most retail investors with many of the stocks so badly beaten down. Happy Lunar New Year! It’s time to feast again!

Hello my fellow Tiger friends! It’s our favouriteLunar New Year once again! It's time r o feast and enjoy this joyous season with your loved ones. There are many yummy goodies, such aa bak kwa, pineapple tarts that are so classic and well-loved by many. For our non-Chinese friends, pineapple tarts in dialect ("ong lai") resembles or signifies wealth and prosperity, hence it's definitely a must-buy during this festive period. I am pretty much spoilt for choices in which goodies to share - who wouldn't when faced with so many yummy-licious goodies! [LOL]  Perhaps I shall share something less conventional, which is green pea cookies from Mdm Ling! The crunchy green peas with a tinge of smokiness that simply melts in your mouth. For those who are not fans of green peas, fret not! Th

RSI - Easy to Use Momentum Indicator

Technical indicators are widely by traders to understand the market sentiment. These indicators provide clues as to how the stock price will move using different metrics. There are several popular indicators, such as Moving AverageConvergence Divergence (MACD), Relative Strength Index (RSI) and Stochastic Oscillator.  There is no perfect technical indicator. Insteadof trying to use most of them in your analysis, pick one or a few that you find useful in making your trading decisions. For me, I find the RSIthe easiest to apply.  So... what is the RSI?  The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a momentum indicator that measures the speed and magnitude of a stock's recent price changes. This helps to evaluate whether the stock is in an overvalued or undervalued c

Dividends As A Defensive Play in 2023 2022 is nearing to an end but the much anticipated Santa rally is nowhere in sight. Seems like Santa is stuck in the winter storm as the market shivers in the fears of a recession instead of busking in a year-end rally.  2023 will not be an easy year for investing as the probability of a recession continues to mount with the rising interest rates and news of layoffs proliferate across multiple industries. While one can never time the market, one should be cognisant of the type of assets to invest in such challenging times.  For myself, having a consistent cash flow through dividends will be one defensive play that I may adopt next year. REITS may have been badly battered in 2022, but choosing stron

Santa, please give me Microsoft If I am only allowed to choose 1 stock as my X’mas gift (though I hope Santa would be mor generous), I would go for $Microsoft(MSFT)$ . Yes, it may sound boring, but Microsoft is undoubtedly the leading tech company with one of the strongest economic moat and fundamentals globally. What beats having a stock that can weather you through the roughest of all storms yet gives you the growth and returns in an economic recovery? Firstly, Microsoft’s Intelligent Cloud, otherwise commonly referred to as Azure, has grown to become the largest revenue driver and poised to grow at least 20% year over year. 2022 - Year Full of Challenges & Test of Conviction 2022 is coming to an end with the much hoped-for Santa rally nowhere in sight while recessionary fears start to weigh on stocks again. As we move into the new year, it is good to reflect on some of the mistakes made this year, re-calibrate and prepare for an equally (hopefully not more) challenging 2023. To start off with, my overall US and SG portfolio are in the red though they fare better than the key market indices. While I am not generally worried about my portfolio (primarily due to avoidance of speculative stocks and focusing only on fundamentally strong stocks), there are areas which I could have done better to improve the portfolio performance. 1. Singapore : My Country, My Home 🇸🇬❤️ I am proud to call the little red dot, Singapore,as my home not just now but for many many more years to come.  Besides being one of the safest countries globally, Singapore is also an open economy that imports heavily due to the lack of natural resources. For example, Singapore had to import over 90% of its food. As a result, Singapore is also subjected to the inflationary pressures just like the other countries.  The rise in prices of food and necessities is prevalent in Singapore, albeit it being less severe than the US and Europe region. Singaporeans are fortunate that our competent government has established a diversified food supply chain to ensure a robust and sustainable prices as well as qu
