'The truth is that the reasons people come into the physical office are changing.'</p>\n<p>As they return to work, employees of website platform Contentful Inc. are getting an eyeful of their new offices in Berlin and Denver and a realigned headquarters in San Francisco, which include hallmarks of the post-pandemic workplace -- a theater in Berlin and group rooms in San Francisco that are devoted to interactive meetings, with kitchen space doubled.</p>\n<p>\"We think the office is a social place first,\" Contentful Chief Executive Steve Sloan told MarketWatch. \"The office is where the great ideas are hatched -- especially in an idea-centric economy.\"</p>\n<p>Millions of tech workers are slowly making the migration back to offices as millions become fully vaccinated and states lift restrictions. At Contentful, all 550 employees, including Sloan, will continue to work from home most of the time, and occasionally venture into the office for socializing and collaboration.</p>\n<p>But many of those returning may not recognize the new digs, which are largely being designed to foster a nexus of ideas shared in theater-like settings and socially-distanced conference rooms, with specialized break-out areas for brainstorming and socializing. Workers will need to get used to the new office lingo of dynamic spaces and hoteling.</p>\n<p>\"It's about going into the tunnel, and coming out of the tunnel,\" VMware Chief Operating Officer Sanjay Poonen told MarketWatch, about a conservative return to the office. \"This is sort of like a traffic jam -- you slow down, and then gradually regain speed. We will get back to normalcy.\"</p>\n<p>Tech companies -- among the first to ask employees to work from home during the pandemic -- are leading the return to the office by the fall. Their reopening plans offer a glimpse into office life of the next few years, with a heavy emphasis on a hybrid work model and three-day work weeks onsite, as well as no vaccine requirements. California's COVID-19 state of emergency order will remain in place beyond June 15, despite plans to fully reopen the state's economy on that date, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday.</p>\n<p>\"Three days a week [in the office] is the new five,\" <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWLO\">Twilio Inc</a>. The truth is that the reasons people come into the physical office are changing.\"</p>\n<p>Dynamic spaces will occupy a key part of Twilio's plans. The San Francisco-based company has revamped offices with specific areas for open collaboration, community and socializing, heads-down work, and flexible multipurpose spaces, said Lake, who added that some employees will trickle back to Twilio's Bay Area offices beginning July 14. Employees have the option of working from home throughout the year.</p>\n<p>Pre-pandemic, many in Silicon Valley were already on the path to a hybrid situation. Advances in videoconferencing technology and bandwidth had given them the luxury of working from home several days a week to avoid car-choked freeways. And employers were OK with the arrangement to scoop up talent from across the country. What COVID did was accelerate a work trend that was already clearly in motion, said Heather Kernahan, global CEO at PR agency Hotwire.</p>\n<p>\"It's not going 'back to work.' We've been working hard,\" Kernahan said. \"Thoughtful working is what you do, not where you go.\"</p>\n<p>An exodus back to the office is likely to occur by September, based on data collected by real-estate company Savills, which surveyed more than 120 tech companies in March. More than half said they expect to be back in the office by the third quarter of this calendar year.</p>\n<p>Silicon Valley's largest employers, sitting on millions of square feet of land they own, have been particularly aggressive in dictating when workers get back. How that pans out in an era when employees are increasingly outspoken about work conditions, including the option to work exclusively from home, bears watching, say labor experts.</p>\n<p>While employees at smaller companies have overwhelmingly shown a preference to return, those at Apple and other behemoths aren't so sure, given the large number of people congregating in <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> place.</p>\n<p>Shortly after Apple Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AAPL\">$(AAPL)$</a> pronounced employees must work in the office at least three days a week (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday) beginning in early September -- including at Apple Park, the futuristic \"spaceship\"-like headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., that the company spent an estimated $5 billion to design and build -- some workers pushed back.</p>\n<p>\"We would like to take the opportunity to communicate a growing concern among our colleagues,\" Apple employees said in a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook. \"That Apple's remote/location-flexible work policy, and the communication around it, have already forced some of our colleagues to quit. Without the inclusivity that flexibility brings, many of us feel we have to choose between either a combination of our families, our well-being, and being empowered to do our best work, or being a part of Apple.\"</p>\n<p>Google parent Alphabet Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GOOGL\">$(GOOGL)$</a>(GOOGL) said it expects about 20% of its workforce to remain fully remote this fall , while 60% will work a hybrid office/home mix.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Facebook</a> Inc. (FB) employees have returned to a 10% maximum capacity at corporate headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., and other select San Francisco Bay Area offices. Facebook is likely to fully reopen most U.S. offices by October, and non-remote employees will work in offices at least half the time. The company and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWTR\">Twitter</a> Inc. (TWTR) have said employees will be allowed to permanently work from home if their jobs allow for it.</p>\n<p>MarketWatch talked to at least 20 companies, and a handful, including Twilio and Box, require employees to be vaccinated before returning to the office. Facebook and Amazon.com Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\">$(AMZN)$</a>, for example, only encourage employees to vaccinate.</p>\n<p>Others, however, have taken a more measured approach.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CRM\">Salesforce</a>.com Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CRM.AU\">$(CRM.AU)$</a> reopened its first U.S. office, the Salesforce <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWR.AU\">Tower</a> headquarters in San Francisco, in May. Offices in Palo Alto, Calif., and Irvine, Calif, will follow in the coming months. At the same time, the company extended the option for all employees to continue to work from home through the end of 2021.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/OKTA\">Okta Inc.</a> (OKTA) is shifting from large, campus-type locations serving regions to distributed offices based on where employees live. The new offices will function like Apple stores -- an \"experiential place\" where customers and partners can learn about products and chat with experts, and employees can collaborate as needed, an Okta spokeswoman told MarketWatch.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BOX\">Box Inc</a>. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BOX.UK\">$(BOX.UK)$</a> is opening its San Francisco office in mid-July and its Redwood City, Calif., headquarters in early August at limited capacity, per local regulations. What its workers will encounter is a mix of assigned desks and hoteling, a form of office management in which workers schedule their use of desks, cubicles and offices. But travel remains prohibited until at least later this summer, and quarterly all-hands meetings will remain virtual through Feb. 1, 2022.</p>\n<p>Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/HPE\">$(HPE)$</a> has divided its workforce into two classes: \"Edge\" workers will come to the office with their laptops once or twice a week for meetings, collaboration and culture. \"Office\" workers will maintain dedicated work stations and come to the office most days.</p>\n<p>German software giant SAP (SAP.XE), which has a Palo Alto, Calif., campus, opened its offices in late April at less than 5% daily capacity for \"employees who choose to return to the office for business critical needs,\" a spokesperson said.</p>\n<p>Then there are outliers like VMware Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/VMW\">$(VMW)$</a>, where few employees currently work onsite. The company is offering employees the choice to permanently work from home as part of a digital-first approach. VMware prohibits meetings and events of more than 10 people at the office -- a policy that will remain in effect until at least July 30. Few employees are currently working at the office, according to the company.</p>\n<p>Boatsetter Inc., an online platform for boat rentals in Florida, went to the extreme and shed 6,000 feet of office space.</p>\n<p>Whether employees are entirely open to the idea of returning full-time in the foreseeable future is another matter.</p>\n<p>About <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> in three (34%) working from home said they would look for a new job if forced to be in the office full time, and nearly half (49%) prefer a hybrid arrangement, according to a Robert Half poll of 1,000 U.S. workers in March .</p>\n<p>\"After a year of drastic change, many business leaders are eager to restore a sense of normalcy and welcome staff back to the office,\" said Paul McDonald, senior executive director at Robert Half. \"But reopening doors will bring new obstacles for companies to navigate. The San Francisco-based company has revamped offices with specific areas for open collaboration, community and socializing, heads-down work, and flexible multipurpose spaces, said Lake, who added that some employees will trickle back to Twilio's Bay Area offices beginning July 14. Employees have the option of working from home throughout the year.</p>\n<p>Pre-pandemic, many in Silicon Valley were already on the path to a hybrid situation. Advances in videoconferencing technology and bandwidth had given them the luxury of working from home several days a week to avoid car-choked freeways. And employers were OK with the arrangement to scoop up talent from across the country. What COVID did was accelerate a work trend that was already clearly in motion, said Heather Kernahan, global CEO at PR agency Hotwire.</p>\n<p>\"It's not going 'back to work.' We've been working hard,\" Kernahan said. \"Thoughtful working is what you do, not where you go.\"</p>\n<p>An exodus back to the office is likely to occur by September, based on data collected by real-estate company Savills, which surveyed more than 120 tech companies in March. (TWTR) have said employees will be allowed to permanently work from home if their jobs allow for it.</p>\n<p>MarketWatch talked to at least 20 companies, and a handful, including Twilio and Box, require employees to be vaccinated before returning to the office. Inflation will remain elevated enough to shake up the stock market, possibly causing a selloff as much as 15%. You need to prepare now.</p>\n<p>The reason: Persistently high inflation will move the 10-year Treasury yield to 2% and get the Federal Reserve to start tapering its stimulus by the end of the year. Both will rattle the stock market.</p>\n<p>The government said June 10 that the cost of living surged in May and drove the pace of inflation to a 13-year high of 5%.</p>\n<p>What should you do? Probably the opposite of what you are thinking. Before we get to that, here is a look at the two key events for stocks — in the bond market and at the Fed — between today and the end of the year.</p>\n<p><b>Rising yields</b></p>\n<p>Remember how the stock market freaked out earlier this year when the 10-year Treasury yield TMUBMUSD10Y,1.452%&nbsp;moved up to around 1.7%? Well, expect a repeat. Only worse.</p>\n<p>“We suspect that inflation in the U.S. will prove more persistent than investors currently appear to anticipate,” says Capital Economics economist Franziska Palmas, citing the tight labor market and wage growth. Her research group puts the 10-year yield at 2.25% by the end of this year, and 2.5% by the end of 2022.</p>\n<p>That’ll be a big move from the current level of 1.5%. Stock investors tend to panic when interest rates rise a lot.</p>\n<p><b>Fed tapering</b></p>\n<p>Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has downplayed the need for tapering the central bank’s bond purchases to keep yields low. But half of the 12 members of the Federal Open Market Committee&nbsp;(FOMC) have recently said they’re ready to start talking about tapering. The FOMC is the Fed branch that sets monetary policy.</p>\n<p>“It will be increasingly hard for Powell to claim the economy needs to make ‘substantial further progress’ toward achieving maximum employment before the Fed starts talking about talking about tapering,” says Ed Yardeni, author of Predicting the Markets and head of Yardeni Research. Powell has repeatedly said the Fed is awaiting “substantial further progress” in the economy before terminating its stimulus.</p>\n<p>“Given the performance of the economy, it is reasonable to expect they will start to taper before end of year, and a few months later they will start to raise the federal funds rate,” predicts Yardeni.</p>\n<p>He thinks the Fed will announce a decision to start tapering in its July meeting. Tapering refers to a reduction in bond purchases by the Fed. This tightens the money supply to put the brakes on growth. Once purchases go to zero, the Fed moves on to cutting rates.</p>\n<p>As we know, tapering causes a “taper tantrum” in the stock market, meaning a sharp selloff in indices like the S&amp;P 500 SPX,+0.19%,&nbsp;the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,+0.04%&nbsp;and Nasdaq COMP,+0.35%.</p>\n<p><b>How to prepare</b></p>\n<p>When considering how to position for the probable selloff caused by rising bond yields and Fed tightening, the key things to remember is why these things are happening in the first place, and what history tells us about how stocks behave.</p>\n<p>The consensus view is that tapering and rising bond yields kill off economic growth and the bull market in stocks. But this isn’t actually true.</p>\n<p>Yes, initially, tightening can make stocks fall — or churn sideways, at best. But then stocks shake it off and move higher as the bull market continues. This makes sense, because the tightening is happening for good reasons that help companies — strong economic growth. This pushes earnings a lot higher, which resets valuations lower — back down to levels investors feel comfortable with.</p>\n<p>“Tapering is part and parcel of a recovery,” says Leuthold market strategist Jim Paulsen. “It is a response to successful policy and a rebound in the economy. It is a natural part of the bull market that allows the market to go higher. It’s a healthy development.”</p>\n<p>Looking through all the market fireworks that may lie ahead, Paulsen thinks underlying economic growth will push S&amp;P 500 earnings up to $220 by the end of the year. Assuming the S&amp;P 500 is at current levels or a little bit lower, that would bring the index’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio down to 18-19 — which is near or below the average since 1990. “That sets up the next leg of the bull market,” he says.</p>\n<p><b>Your five-point game plan</b></p>\n<p><b>1. Do not go to “defensives”</b></p>\n<p>When people see stock market turbulence, the knee-jerk reaction is to go for the “stability” of defensive names like utilities and consumer staples. But that would be a mistake. You want to go to defensives when the economy is slowing or contracting, not when it is strong. Another problem is that defensive names pay yield. So, like bonds, they get hit by rising interest rates, which devalue dividends — and dividend-paying stocks and bonds.</p>\n<p>“The best way to protect yourself is to tie your portfolio to the overheated economy. That is where the best profit growth and profit leverage is,” says Paulsen. “You do not get that with defensives.”</p>\n<p><b>2. Go with companies that benefit from growth</b></p>\n<p>Since rapid economic growth is causing the tapering — and the growth is usually not killed off by tightening — stocks linked to growth typically are the best place to be. This means cyclicals like industrials, basic materials consumer names, small-caps and international stocks. “Slower growth consumer staples and utilities won’t keep up with growth areas of the market,” says Paulsen.</p>\n<p>I first suggested Lindblad Expeditions LIND,+0.17%&nbsp;and Cardlytics CDLX,+4.54%&nbsp;and in my stock letter, Brush Up on Stocks (the link to my site is in the bio, below) in September 2020 and November 2019. I still like and own both even though they are up 48% and 157% — or two to four times the S&amp;P 500. Recent insider buying confirms they are buys and holds around current levels. Plus, both are cyclical names. Cardlytics helps credit card companies understand customer buying patterns for marketing purposes. Lindblad offers specialized cruise adventures to exotic locales. Both benefit from economic growth that powers more consumer spending.</p>\n<p><b>3. Do not get out of stocks</b></p>\n<p>If you think a selloff is coming, it might be tempting to try to get out of stocks right before that, to buy back after the weakness happens. But this is a lot harder than you think. In fact, it is almost impossible to get the timing right, say market veterans.</p>\n<p>“You have to make two smart decisions,” says Yardeni. “You have to get out just before the correction and then you have to decide when to get back in. I don’t know of too many people that can do that consistently.”</p>\n<p>Market timers often get out and don’t get back in, and they miss the next leg up. “You can get yourself into trouble trying to avoid the correction,” says Paulsen.</p>\n<p><b>4. Do not own bonds</b></p>\n<p>Bond yields will be 2% or higher by the end of year. So don’t own bonds, whose prices fall when yields rise — unless you simply plan to hold to maturity to collect the income.</p>\n<p><b>5. Inflation will remain elevated enough to shake up the stock market, possibly causing a selloff as much as 15%. You need to prepare now.\nThe reason: Persistently high inflation will move the 10-year Treasury yield to 2% and get the Federal Reserve to start tapering its stimulus by the end of the year. Both will rattle the stock market.\nThe government said June 10 that the cost of living surged in May and drove the pace of inflation to a 13-year high of 5%.\nWhat should you do? Probably the opposite of what you are thinking. Before we get to that, here is a look at the two key events for stocks — in the bond market and at the Fed — between today and the end of the year.\nRising yields\nRemember how the stock market freaked out earlier this year when the 10-year Treasury yield TMUBMUSD10Y,1.452% moved up to around 1.7%? Well, expect a repeat. Only worse.\n“We suspect that inflation in the U.S. will prove more persistent than investors currently appear to anticipate,” says Capital Economics economist Franziska Palmas, citing the tight labor market and wage growth. Her research group puts the 10-year yield at 2.25% by the end of this year, and 2.5% by the end of 2022.\nThat’ll be a big move from the current level of 1.5%. Stock investors tend to panic when interest rates rise a lot.\nFed tapering\nFed Chairman Jerome Powell has downplayed the need for tapering the central bank’s bond purchases to keep yields low. But half of the 12 members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) have recently said they’re ready to start talking about tapering. The FOMC is the Fed branch that sets monetary policy.\n“It will be increasingly hard for Powell to claim the economy needs to make ‘substantial further progress’ toward achieving maximum employment before the Fed starts talking about talking about tapering,” says Ed Yardeni, author of Predicting the Markets and head of Yardeni Research. Powell has repeatedly said the Fed is awaiting “substantial further progress” in the economy before terminating its stimulus.\n“Given the performance of the economy, it is reasonable to expect they will start to taper before end of year, and a few months later they will start to raise the federal funds rate,” predicts Yardeni.\nHe thinks the Fed will announce a decision to start tapering in its July meeting. Tapering refers to a reduction in bond purchases by the Fed. This tightens the money supply to put the brakes on growth. Once purchases go to zero, the Fed moves on to cutting rates.\nAs we know, tapering causes a “taper tantrum” in the stock market, meaning a sharp selloff in indices like the S&P 500 SPX,+0.19%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,+0.04% and Nasdaq COMP,+0.35%.\nHow to prepare\nWhen considering how to position for the probable selloff caused by rising bond yields and Fed tightening, the key things to remember is why these things are happening in the first place, and what history tells us about how stocks behave.\nThe consensus view is that tapering and rising bond yields kill off economic growth and the bull market in stocks. But this isn’t actually true.\nYes, initially, tightening can make stocks fall — or churn sideways, at best. But then stocks shake it off and move higher as the bull market continues. This makes sense, because the tightening is happening for good reasons that help companies — strong economic growth. This pushes earnings a lot higher, which resets valuations lower — back down to levels investors feel comfortable with.\n“Tapering is part and parcel of a recovery,” says Leuthold market strategist Jim Paulsen. “It is a response to successful policy and a rebound in the economy. It is a natural part of the bull market that allows the market to go higher. It’s a healthy development.”\nLooking through all the market fireworks that may lie ahead, Paulsen thinks underlying economic growth will push S&P 500 earnings up to $220 by the end of the year. Assuming the S&P 500 is at current levels or a little bit lower, that would bring the index’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio down to 18-19 — which is near or below the average since 1990. “That sets up the next leg of the bull market,” he says.\nYour five-point game plan\n1. Do not go to “defensives”\nWhen people see stock market turbulence, the knee-jerk reaction is to go for the “stability” of defensive names like utilities and consumer staples. But that would be a mistake. You want to go to defensives when the economy is slowing or contracting, not when it is strong. Another problem is that defensive names pay yield. So, like bonds, they get hit by rising interest rates, which devalue dividends — and dividend-paying stocks and bonds.\n“The best way to protect yourself is to tie your portfolio to the overheated economy. That is where the best profit growth and profit leverage is,” says Paulsen. “You do not get that with defensives.”\n2. Go with companies that benefit from growth\nSince rapid economic growth is causing the tapering — and the growth is usually not killed off by tightening — stocks linked to growth typically are the best place to be. This means cyclicals like industrials, basic materials consumer names, small-caps and international stocks. “Slower growth consumer staples and utilities won’t keep up with growth areas of the market,” says Paulsen.\nI first suggested Lindblad Expeditions LIND,+0.17% and Cardlytics CDLX,+4.54% and in my stock letter, Brush Up on Stocks (the link to my site is in the bio, below) in September 2020 and November 2019. I still like and own both even though they are up 48% and 157% — or two to four times the S&P 500. Recent insider buying confirms they are buys and holds around current levels. Plus, both are cyclical names. Cardlytics helps credit card companies understand customer buying patterns for marketing purposes. Lindblad offers specialized cruise adventures to exotic locales. Both benefit from economic growth that powers more consumer spending.\n3. Do not get out of stocks\nIf you think a selloff is coming, it might be tempting to try to get out of stocks right before that, to buy back after the weakness happens. But this is a lot harder than you think. In fact, it is almost impossible to get the timing right, say market veterans.\n“You have to make two smart decisions,” says Yardeni. “You have to get out just before the correction and then you have to decide when to get back in. I don’t know of too many people that can do that consistently.”\nMarket timers often get out and don’t get back in, and they miss the next leg up. “You can get yourself into trouble trying to avoid the correction,” says Paulsen.\n4. Do not own bonds\nBond yields will be 2% or higher by the end of year. So don’t own bonds, whose prices fall when yields rise — unless you simply plan to hold to maturity to collect the income.\n5. Investors will also be looking for information about a recent wireless auction offering spectrum that will be crucial for 5G network deployments. Though the bids haven't been made public yet, the auction drove record spending and AT&amp;T and Verizon are both expected to have paid up handsomely to assert their standing. Advances in videoconferencing technology and bandwidth had given them the luxury of working from home several days a week to avoid car-choked freeways. And employers were OK with the arrangement to scoop up talent from across the country. (TWTR) have said employees will be allowed to permanently work from home if their jobs allow for it.</p>\n<p>MarketWatch talked to at least 20 companies, and a handful, including Twilio and Box, require employees to be vaccinated before returning to the office. Offices in Palo Alto, Calif., and Irvine, Calif, will follow in the coming months.
