Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) is scheduled to release its first-quarter results Monday, after the market close.

Key Q1 Metrics to Watch For: Tesla is expected to report non-GAAP earnings per share, or EPS, of 79 cents in the first quarter of 2021, up sharply from 23 cents in the year-ago quarter.

The consensus revenue forecast for the quarter is at $10.29 billion, up 72% year-over-year.

In the fourth quarter, Tesla had earned 80 cents per share on a non-GAAP basis on revenues of $10.74 billion.

Tesla revealed in early April it delivered a record 184,800 vehicles in the first quarter, comprising 182,780 Model 3/Y vehicles and 2,020 Model S/X vehicles. This represents a 109% year-over-year increase and 2.2% sequential growth. Quarterly production was at 180,338.

Focus On Regulatory Credits, Automotive Margins: The focus is likely to be on regulatory credits, which accounted for 4.3% of its revenues in the fourth quarter of 2020. Zero-emission vehicle regulations adopted by several states allow EV manufacturers to earn regulatory credits, which can be monetized by selling to legacy automakers, who are not able to achieve the minimum target set for the proportion of green energy vehicles sold.

Automotive gross margin slipped to 24.1% in the fourth quarter of 2020 from 27.7% in the previous quarter. It's likely the company could see a further moderation in margins, as production of the higher priced Model S/X vehicles was stalled in the quarter to allow for model refreshes.

View more earnings on TSLA

With competitive pressure intensifying, Tesla could aggressively slash vehicles prices in order to achieve volume production targets, long-time Tesla bear Gordon Johnson said in a note previewing the quarterly results.

Tesla investors may also be keen to find out more about the company's Bitcoin investment strategy and its decision to allow the use of Bitcoin for vehicle purchases.

Forward Outlook: Tesla is well positioned to capitalize on the opportunity presented by the exponential growth that is anticipated for green energy vehicles. Its Giga Shanghai factory is now churning out both Model S and Model Y vehicles, and more capacity is expected to come on line with the opening of factories in Berlin and Texas.

Tesla's CFO Zach Kirkhorn said on the earnings call that the company is shooting for a 50% compounded annual growth rate in volume sales and expects to materially exceed the target in 2021.

Stock Take: Tesla's shares, which were flying high until early February, joined the tech sell-off that ensued. From a split-adjusted high of $900.40 on Jan. 25, the stock fell to $539.49 on March 5, a peak-to-trough decline of 40%.

Although the stock has made good some of the losses since then, it is yet to break above $800 level.

Tesla holds a several-year lead and is now expanding aggressively into storage, and therefore a premium valuation for its shares is justified, CANACCORD Genuity analyst Jed Dorsheimer said in a recent note. The firm has a $1,071 price target for the stock.

Friday, Tesla's shares ended 1.35% higher at $729.40.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
What to Expect From Tesla's Q1 Earnings Report On Monday
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhat to Expect From Tesla's Q1 Earnings Report On Monday\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Benzinga
\n
2021-04-25 10:38
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

EV giant Tesla, Inc.

Despite having a large share of the luxury EV market, the company has posted several years of significant losses in its history. Investors are now hoping that the days of red ink are behind us, which is why the focus must now shift to key margin metrics.
\n
Tesla's GAAP and non-GAAP numbers have always varied wildly due to stock-based compensation. That gap has been quite large recently thanks to Elon Musk's large bonus plan hitting a number of tranches in 2020. Analysts primarily use the adjusted numbers, and Tesla delivered $2.24 in adjusted EPS last year. As the graphic below shows, estimates for this year have been rising for more than a year, with the current average of $4.22 up a bit from the $3.98 average seen at the end of last year.
\n
Source: Seeking Alpha Tesla analyst estimates page
\n
It will be very interesting to see the margin numbers reported when Tesla earnings come out on Monday, April 26th. While the company did beat estimates for Q1 production and deliveries, there was no production of the Model S or X in the quarter. Elon Musk had said on the Q1 conference call that the refreshed versions of those luxury models were in production already and would be delivered in February, but that obviously did not happen. With these being higher margin vehicles in the past, you would figure overall margins will be hurt.
\n
Q1 also saw sharp rises in key commodity prices like nickel and cobalt, as well as the initial ramp of the Model Y made in China. Tesla skeptics also believe that highly profitable credit sales will fade over time, but it remains to be seen in the short term how much they will contribute. There also were a number of price cuts during the quarter, like for the Model 3 in Japan and a number of European countries. For a time, Tesla also cut prices in the US on the Model Y and also had a much lower priced Standard Range variant that was sold for part of the quarter.
\n
As the graphic below details, Tesla's GAAP automotive gross margins have mostly been in the mid 20s percentage-wise over the past five quarters. Credit sales have helped quite a bit, but don't forget that this is only just part of the business. Tesla's energy business has seen low margins or negative margins in recent periods, and the services/other segment loses plenty of money each quarter. Overall for Q4 2020, the company's total GAAP gross margin figure was 19.23%, nearly 500 basis points below the automotive segment's GAAP gross margin figure.
\n
Source: Tesla Q4 2020 investor letter
\n
With almost no Model S/X vehicles sold during the period, company-wide average selling prices will certainly decline. The key question is was Tesla able to keep costs at a reasonable level, or are we going to see a significant drop in gross margins? Management spoke on the conference call about a number of supposedly one-time items that were headwinds in Q4, which if they truly dissipate could really help things in Q1.
\n
On the operating side, there shouldn't be as much expense given a shorter quarter, less coming from the CEO pay package, and Q4 having a larger part of expenses relating to the employee performance grant process. As a point of reference, the current estimates call for $10.12 billion in Q1 revenue and $0.74 in non-GAAP EPS, compared to $10.74 billion and $0.80 in Q4 2020.
\n
While the Street expects more than $4 in earnings this year, that number is forecast to surge into the low-double digits by 2024. It certainly helps that expected sharply rising deliveries over time should result in more revenue. However, if there are too many price cuts needed to achieve that growth, whether it be to competition or other factors like global economics, certain margin targets will not be met.
\n
Don't forget, Tesla's share count is rising over time, which is pressuring the EPS forecast for a given level of net income. The unit sales surge in Japan is a good example of how things can change, as it was driven by price cuts of 13%-17% for the Model 3. I can certainly sell more dollar bills for 90 cents each than I can for 95 cents, but it won't be good for my bottom line.
\n
As for Tesla shares, they are at a very interesting point right now. They closed Monday just above the 100-day moving average (green line below), but remain under the 50-day (purple line). The current Street price target average implies $60 of downside from here, and the stock's movement until earnings will likely be dependent on whether inflation data results in bond yields moving sharply higher or not. If the stock cannot break above the 50-day, that declining key technical level could provide more resistance, and it brings up the possibility of the stock seeing the dreaded death cross later this year.
\n
Source: Yahoo! The Cannacord analyst,Jonathan Dorsheimer, backed up his bold assertion by noting that Tesla is involved in more than just cars, just like Apple does more than just make iPhones.

The Apple-like spin is admittedly aggressive, and maybe even a bit aspirational, but such is the nature of Tesla. Investors either believe in the vision of Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, or they don’t. So far, it has paid to be a believer, and the stock’s Monday rally suggests that Tesla’s investors are looking for new reasons to be evangelical.

The reason to believe could come as early as April 26, when Tesla is scheduled to reports first-quarter earnings after the market closes. Should the stock surge, investors can shout hallelujah. Should the stock stumble, look for a baptism by fire.

With Tesla’s stock around $725, aggressive investors could consider buying Tesla’s April $735call optionsthat expire April 30 for $37.50.

If the stock is at $800, the call is worth $65. Should the stock be below the strike price at expiration, the trade fails, though the call could be adjusted within the options market to keep it alive.

During the past 52 weeks, Tesla stock has ranged from $134.76 to $900.40. So far this year, the stock is up about 3%, compared with a gain of 10% for the S&P 500.

The last time we mentioned Tesla was in early April, just before the company reported first-quarter vehicle deliveries.

We then suggested that investors sell Tesla’s May $500 or May $550 put options to trade delivery data when the stock was around $661.75. So far, the trade has worked well. With Tesla’s stock around $725, aggressive investors could consider buying Tesla’s April $735call optionsthat expire April 30 for $37.50.If the stock is at $800, the call is worth $65. Should the stock be below the strike price at expiration, the trade fails, though the call could be adjusted within the options market to keep it alive.During the past 52 weeks, Tesla stock has ranged from $134.76 to $900.40. So far this year, the stock is up about 3%, compared with a gain of 10% for the S&P 500.The last time we mentioned Tesla was in early April, just before the company reported first-quarter vehicle deliveries. We then suggested that investors sell Tesla’s May $500 or May $550 put options to trade delivery data when the stock was around $661.75. So far, the trade has worked well. The May $500 puts are trading at $3.50, down from $11, and the May $550 puts are trading at $6.85, down from $20.Securing profits is largely a matter of discipline. Some investors will secure profits with gains of 70% on the puts, others will go for 90%. Still others will hold the puts until expiration because they are content acquiring the stock at the put strike price.Regardless of which side of the options market appeals to you, Tesla’s earnings should be a key event, and the sell-side analysts are likely to have more salacious comments to make.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":279,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":344158146,"gmtCreate":1618390002285,"gmtModify":1704710059118,"author":{"id":"3575163203849272","authorId":"3575163203849272","name":"jaedragon","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575163203849272","authorIdStr":"3575163203849272"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"?","listText":"?","text":"?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/344158146","repostId":"2127454000","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2127454000","pubTimestamp":1618364092,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2127454000?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-14 09:34","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Coinbase IPO: Everything you need to know about the ‘watershed moment’ in crypto","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2127454000","media":"MarketWatch","summary":"'That said, investing in Coinbase is not for the faint of heart, as the business--and the stock--wil","content":"
'That said, investing in Coinbase is not for the faint of heart, as the business--and the stock--will likely see dramatic, potentially protracted, swings,' MoffettNathanson's Ellis writes

Here comes the Coinbase IPO! Fred Ehrsam, a Coinbase director, also helped to create the company.According to Forbes , Armstrong's networth is currently $6.5 billion based on his ownership in the company and his wealth is likely to increase if the direct listing goes off successfully. When will Coinbase go public?Coinbase will list on April 14. The precise timing of the list isn't clear but Palantir Technologies Inc.'s (PLTR)direct listing after 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time.Where will it list?Coinbase is set to go public on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol \"COIN\" as a direct listing, meaning it isn't raising any new money, as a company would under a traditional IPO.Coinbase is the Nasdaq's first major direct listing, with Spotify $(SPOT)$, Slack Technologies (WORK) and most recently Palantir Technologies (PLTR) all opting to directly list at the NYSE.Valuations?Valuations for Coinbase vary from $50 billion to $150 billion based on some decentralized crypto platforms that attempt to replicate how the company's shares might trade. The title of largest goes to Binance, which sees $47 billion in crypto trading volume in a 24-hour period, according to CoinMarketCap.com .Who else owns Coinbase?Venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, is the largest owner of Coinbase, boasting about 25% of Class A shares and 14%% of Class B. And Marc Andreessen, head of the venture capital outfit, sits on Coinbase's board.Other factsFor those aiming for an even deeper dive into Coinbase, check out MarketWatch's 5 things to know about the company.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":240,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":374856523,"gmtCreate":1619440285362,"gmtModify":1704723870266,"author":{"id":"3575163203849272","authorId":"3575163203849272","name":"jaedragon","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575163203849272","authorIdStr":"3575163203849272"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Moon","listText":"Moon","text":"Moon","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/374856523","repostId":"2130364766","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2130364766","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Stock Market Quotes, Business News, Financial News, Trading Ideas, and Stock Research by Professionals","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Benzinga","id":"1052270027","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d08bf7808052c0ca9deb4e944cae32aa"},"pubTimestamp":1619318325,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2130364766?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-25 10:38","market":"us","language":"en","title":"What to Expect From Tesla's Q1 Earnings Report On Monday","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2130364766","media":"Benzinga","summary":"EV giant Tesla, Inc. is scheduled to release its first-quarter results Monday, after the market close.Key Q1 Metrics to Watch For: Tesla is expected to report non-GAAP earnings per share, or EPS, of 79 cents in the first quarter of 2021, up sharply from 23 cents in the year-ago quarter. The consensus revenue forecast for the quarter is at $10.29 billion, up 72% year-over-year.Focus On Regulatory Credits, Automotive Margins: The focus is likely to be on regulatory credits, which accounted for 4","content":"

EV giant Tesla, Inc.

The May $500 puts are trading at $3.50, down from $11, and the May $550 puts are trading at $6.85, down from $20.

Securing profits is largely a matter of discipline. Still others will hold the puts until expiration because they are content acquiring the stock at the put strike price.Regardless of which side of the options market appeals to you, Tesla’s earnings should be a key event, and the sell-side analysts are likely to have more salacious comments to make.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":279,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":372811488,"gmtCreate":1619190252044,"gmtModify":1704721088283,"author":{"id":"3575163203849272","authorId":"3575163203849272","name":"jaedragon","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575163203849272","authorIdStr":"3575163203849272"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Sea Ltd(SE)$up up","listText":"$Sea Ltd(SE)$up up","text":"$Sea Ltd(SE)$up up","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/372811488","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":163,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":344723434,"gmtCreate":1618444800028,"gmtModify":1704710871655,"author":{"id":"3575163203849272","authorId":"3575163203849272","name":"jaedragon","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575163203849272","authorIdStr":"3575163203849272"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Up up","listText":"Up up","text":"Up up","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/344723434","repostId":"1126332570","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"1126332570","pubTimestamp":1618372916,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1126332570?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-14 12:01","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Tesla Focus Shifts To Margins","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1126332570","media":"seekingalpha","summary":"Analysts expect non-GAAP profit to surge this year.Short-term situation could see a number of pressures.Stock at a key technical point right now.One of the largest criticisms of electric vehicle maker Tesla has been its inability to generate meaningful profits.
