The May $500 puts are trading at $3.50, down from $11, and the May $550 puts are trading at $6.85, down from $20.</p><p>Securing profits is largely a matter of discipline. Some investors will secure profits with gains of 70% on the puts, others will go for 90%. Despite having a large share of the luxury EV market, the company has posted several years of significant losses in its history. Investors are now hoping that the days of red ink are behind us, which is why the focus must now shift to key margin metrics.</p>\n<p>Tesla's GAAP and non-GAAP numbers have always varied wildly due to stock-based compensation. That gap has been quite large recently thanks to Elon Musk's large bonus plan hitting a number of tranches in 2020. Analysts primarily use the adjusted numbers, and Tesla delivered $2.24 in adjusted EPS last year. As the graphic below shows, estimates for this year have been rising for more than a year, with the current average of $4.22 up a bit from the $3.98 average seen at the end of last year.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8efe7dc5dee0d26aa4c3862123e6bddf\" tg-width=\"385\" tg-height=\"103\"><span>Source: Seeking Alpha Tesla analyst estimates page</span></p>\n<p>It will be very interesting to see the margin numbers reported when Tesla earnings come out on Monday, April 26th. While the company&nbsp;did beat estimates&nbsp;for Q1 production and deliveries, there was no production of the Model S or X in the quarter. Elon Musk had said on the Q1 conference call that the refreshed versions of those luxury models were in production already and would be delivered in February, but that obviously did not happen. With these being higher margin vehicles in the past, you would figure overall margins will be hurt.</p>\n<p>Q1 also saw sharp rises in key commodity prices like nickel and cobalt, as well as the initial ramp of the Model Y made in China. Tesla skeptics also believe that highly profitable credit sales will fade over time, but it remains to be seen in the short term how much they will contribute. There also were a number of price cuts during the quarter, like for the Model 3 in Japan and a number of European countries. For a time, Tesla also cut prices in the US on the Model Y and also had a much lower priced Standard Range variant that was sold for part of the quarter.</p>\n<p>As the graphic below details, Tesla's GAAP automotive gross margins have mostly been in the mid 20s percentage-wise over the past five quarters. Credit sales have helped quite a bit, but don't forget that this is only just part of the business. Tesla's energy business has seen low margins or negative margins in recent periods, and the services/other segment loses plenty of money each quarter. Overall for Q4 2020, the company's total GAAP gross margin figure was 19.23%, nearly 500 basis points below the automotive segment's GAAP gross margin figure.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c951c203e6189adb5a1cae8b1a41489e\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"57\"><span>Source: Tesla Q4 2020 investor letter</span></p>\n<p>With almost no Model S/X vehicles sold during the period, company-wide average selling prices will certainly decline. The key question is was Tesla able to keep costs at a reasonable level, or are we going to see a significant drop in gross margins? Management spoke&nbsp;on the conference call&nbsp;about a number of supposedly one-time items that were headwinds in Q4, which if they truly dissipate could really help things in Q1.</p>\n<p>On the operating side, there shouldn't be as much expense given a shorter quarter, less coming from the CEO pay package, and Q4 having a larger part of expenses relating to the employee performance grant process. As a point of reference, the&nbsp;current estimates&nbsp;call for $10.12 billion in Q1 revenue and $0.74 in non-GAAP EPS, compared to $10.74 billion and $0.80 in Q4 2020.</p>\n<p>While the Street expects more than $4 in earnings this year, that number is forecast to surge into the low-double digits by 2024. It certainly helps that expected sharply rising deliveries over time should result in more revenue. However, if there are too many price cuts needed to achieve that growth, whether it be to competition or other factors like global economics, certain margin targets will not be met.</p>\n<p>Don't forget, Tesla's share count is rising over time, which is pressuring the EPS forecast for a given level of net income. The unit sales surge in Japan&nbsp;is a good example&nbsp;of how things can change, as it was driven by price cuts of 13%-17% for the Model 3. I can certainly sell more dollar bills for 90 cents each than I can for 95 cents, but it won't be good for my bottom line.</p>\n<p>As for Tesla shares, they are at a very interesting point right now. They closed Monday just above the 100-day moving average (green line below), but remain under the 50-day (purple line). The current&nbsp;Street price target average&nbsp;implies $60 of downside from here, and the stock's movement until earnings will likely be dependent on whether inflation data results in bond yields moving sharply higher or not. If the stock cannot break above the 50-day, that declining key technical level could provide more resistance, and it brings up the possibility of the stock seeing the dreaded death cross later this year.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ab48feaf079058dba48f4e221d0db55b\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"271\"><span>Source: Yahoo! Finance</span></p>\n<p>Tesla certainly defied reduced expectations when it reported its Q1 delivery figures, but my primary Q1 focus will be on margins. How profitable will the company be when it is selling almost no Model S/X units, especially with commodity headwinds and the ramp of the China-made Model Y. Analyst estimates are certainly on the rise, with the Street now calling for a more than $2.2 billion improvement in non-GAAP net income this year. Despite having a large share of the luxury EV market, the company has posted several years of significant losses in its history. Investors are now hoping that the days of red ink are behind us, which is why the focus must now shift to key margin metrics.\nTesla's GAAP and non-GAAP numbers have always varied wildly due to stock-based compensation. That gap has been quite large recently thanks to Elon Musk's large bonus plan hitting a number of tranches in 2020. Analysts primarily use the adjusted numbers, and Tesla delivered $2.24 in adjusted EPS last year. As the graphic below shows, estimates for this year have been rising for more than a year, with the current average of $4.22 up a bit from the $3.98 average seen at the end of last year.\nSource: Seeking Alpha Tesla analyst estimates page\nIt will be very interesting to see the margin numbers reported when Tesla earnings come out on Monday, April 26th. While the company did beat estimates for Q1 production and deliveries, there was no production of the Model S or X in the quarter. Elon Musk had said on the Q1 conference call that the refreshed versions of those luxury models were in production already and would be delivered in February, but that obviously did not happen. With these being higher margin vehicles in the past, you would figure overall margins will be hurt.\nQ1 also saw sharp rises in key commodity prices like nickel and cobalt, as well as the initial ramp of the Model Y made in China. Tesla skeptics also believe that highly profitable credit sales will fade over time, but it remains to be seen in the short term how much they will contribute. There also were a number of price cuts during the quarter, like for the Model 3 in Japan and a number of European countries. For a time, Tesla also cut prices in the US on the Model Y and also had a much lower priced Standard Range variant that was sold for part of the quarter.\nAs the graphic below details, Tesla's GAAP automotive gross margins have mostly been in the mid 20s percentage-wise over the past five quarters. Credit sales have helped quite a bit, but don't forget that this is only just part of the business. Tesla's energy business has seen low margins or negative margins in recent periods, and the services/other segment loses plenty of money each quarter. Overall for Q4 2020, the company's total GAAP gross margin figure was 19.23%, nearly 500 basis points below the automotive segment's GAAP gross margin figure.\nSource: Tesla Q4 2020 investor letter\nWith almost no Model S/X vehicles sold during the period, company-wide average selling prices will certainly decline. The key question is was Tesla able to keep costs at a reasonable level, or are we going to see a significant drop in gross margins? Management spoke on the conference call about a number of supposedly one-time items that were headwinds in Q4, which if they truly dissipate could really help things in Q1.\nOn the operating side, there shouldn't be as much expense given a shorter quarter, less coming from the CEO pay package, and Q4 having a larger part of expenses relating to the employee performance grant process. As a point of reference, the current estimates call for $10.12 billion in Q1 revenue and $0.74 in non-GAAP EPS, compared to $10.74 billion and $0.80 in Q4 2020.\nWhile the Street expects more than $4 in earnings this year, that number is forecast to surge into the low-double digits by 2024. It certainly helps that expected sharply rising deliveries over time should result in more revenue. However, if there are too many price cuts needed to achieve that growth, whether it be to competition or other factors like global economics, certain margin targets will not be met.\nDon't forget, Tesla's share count is rising over time, which is pressuring the EPS forecast for a given level of net income. The unit sales surge in Japan is a good example of how things can change, as it was driven by price cuts of 13%-17% for the Model 3. I can certainly sell more dollar bills for 90 cents each than I can for 95 cents, but it won't be good for my bottom line.\nAs for Tesla shares, they are at a very interesting point right now. They closed Monday just above the 100-day moving average (green line below), but remain under the 50-day (purple line). The current Street price target average implies $60 of downside from here, and the stock's movement until earnings will likely be dependent on whether inflation data results in bond yields moving sharply higher or not. If the stock cannot break above the 50-day, that declining key technical level could provide more resistance, and it brings up the possibility of the stock seeing the dreaded death cross later this year.\nSource: Yahoo! Finance\nTesla certainly defied reduced expectations when it reported its Q1 delivery figures, but my primary Q1 focus will be on margins. How profitable will the company be when it is selling almost no Model S/X units, especially with commodity headwinds and the ramp of the China-made Model Y. Analyst estimates are certainly on the rise, with the Street now calling for a more than $2.2 billion improvement in non-GAAP net income this year. Photographer: Tiffany Hagler-Geard/Bloomberg</span></p><p>Coinbase is the talk of Wall Street, as the largest crypto platform in the U.S. gears up for its public debut on a traditional exchange Wednesday, through a direct listing.</p><p>There is no doubt that the public offering of Coinbase is a big deal in the world of crypto. The company was created just over a decade ago with the genesis of bitcoin  and is now in the midst of a moment that many in the industry have described as a tipping point .</p><p>There are few ways to get direct ownership of crypto currencies, outside of buying them directly, a service that Coinbase provides for a fee, and what investors appear willing to be pay up for.</p><p>Leeor Shimron, analyst at FundStrat Global Advisors, described the Coinbase listing as seminal. \"Coinbase's direct listing is a watershed moment for the crypto industry.\"</p><p>Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said the listing is a reflection of the crypto's mainstream evolution.</p><p>\"Coinbase is a foundational piece of the crypto ecosystem and is a barometer for the growing mainstream adoption of Bitcoin and crypto for the coming years in our opinion,\" he wrote in a research note Tuesday.</p><p>Some caution that the implied valuations for Coinbase as a crypto exchange are too lofty , the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange.</p><p>In a direct listing, a company floats its shares on a stock exchange, but without hiring banks to underwrite the transaction, like in an IPO.</p><p>Here's what you need to know about the coming offering.</p><p><b>What is Coinbase?</b></p><p>The Silicon Valley crypto exchange was co-founded in 2012 by Brian Armstrong, 38, who runs the platform as chief executive. Fred Ehrsam, a Coinbase director, also helped to create the company.</p><p>According to Forbes , Armstrong's networth is currently $6.5 billion based on his ownership in the company and his wealth is likely to increase if the direct listing goes off successfully.</p><p><b>When will Coinbase go public?</b></p><p>Coinbase will list on April 14. The precise timing of the list isn't clear but <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PLTR\">Palantir Technologies Inc.</a>'s (PLTR)direct listing   after 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time.</p><p><b>Where will it list?</b></p><p>Coinbase is set to go public on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol \"COIN\" as a direct listing, meaning it isn't raising any new money, as a company would under a traditional IPO.</p><p>Coinbase is the Nasdaq's first major direct listing, with Spotify <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SPOT\">$(SPOT)$</a>, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WORK\">Slack Technologies</a> (WORK) and most recently Palantir Technologies (PLTR) all opting to directly list at the NYSE.</p><p><b>Valuations?</b></p><p>Valuations for Coinbase vary from $50 billion to $150 billion based on some decentralized crypto platforms that attempt to replicate how the company's shares might trade. At the top end of the spectrum, Coinbase would be bigger than a number of U.S. exchanges, including ICE, Nasdaq, CME Group <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CME\">$(CME)$</a> and Cboe Global Markets <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CBOE\">$(CBOE)$</a>.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d2200134a14a3d37a8a656d85f6906c0\" tg-width=\"955\" tg-height=\"657\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>David Trainer, CEO of New Constructs, an investment research firm, said the crypto platform's value is ridiculously high. \"Even though Coinbase's revenue surged over the past 12 months, the company has little-to-no-chance of meeting the future profit expectations that are baked into its ridiculously high expected valuation of $100 billion,\" he said.</p><p>\"Coinbase's expected valuation of $100 billion implies that its revenue will be 1.5x the combined 2020 revenues of two of the most established exchanges in the marketplace, Nasdaq Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NDAQ\">$(NDAQ)$</a> and Intercontinental Exchange <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ICE\">$(ICE)$</a>, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange,\" he said.</p><p>Trainer said that based on his calculation, Coinbase's valuation should be closer to $18.9 billion--an 81% decrease from the $100 billion expected valuation.</p><p><b>'Not for the faint of heart'</b></p><p>MoffettNathanson analyst Lisa Ellis explained to MarketWatch why the offering is, as she describes it \"not for the faint of heart,\" but why she initiated coverage of the exchange at a buy with a price-target of $600, even before it sees its first trade on the Nasdaq.</p><p>\"I'm super super bullish on Coinbase...because you get the sense that they are a market leader in the space and crypto agnostic,\" she said.</p><p>That said, she acknowledges that currently 90% of Coinbase's revenues are derived directly from retail trading, with most in the U.S. and trading centered primarily on the two largest cryptos: bitcoin and Ether  on the ethereum blockchain.</p><p>\"So the implications is that Coinbase's revenues are correlated with the level of activity in cryto currency and especially bitcoin and ether.\"</p><p>Ellis says investors need to have at least a one-year long-term investment strategy in bitcoin, which could still go to zero by some bearish accounts, but a three-year outlook is even better, because the crypto complex has tended to operate in three-year cycles of boom and then bust.</p><p><b>Validation for crypto or a top?</b></p><p>Some bulls see Coinbase as validation for the nascent crpyto industry.</p><p>Alex Mashinsky, head of crypto-lending and trading platform Celsius Network, put it this way:</p><p>\"We look at the Coinbase listing as an additional validation of the space, and a major PR opportunity for the entire industry to shine as the future of finance,\" he told MarketWatch via email.</p><p>\"Coinbase has more users and more revenues than many of the largest Wall Street players and is more profitable than any major exchange, and this validation puts most skeptics at a crossroads having to re-evaluate their denial and frustration with the disruption coming at them from all sides.\"</p><p>Others suggest that it may prove a new top for the market and put crypto prices under pressure after a precipitous rally in recent days and a fresh record for bitcoin.</p><p>Yves Lamoureux, the president of Montreal-based macroeconomic research firm Lamoureux &amp; Co., told MarketWatch that he is fearful that too much euphoria surrounds bitcoin and crypto and sees it due for a retrenchment as a result. \"Can you find out-there anyone with a bearish viewpoint?\" he asked. \"A resounding no,\" said Lamoureux.</p><p><b>Is Coinbase the largest crypto exchange?</b></p><p>Coinbase is the second-largest crypto platform, but the largest in the U.S., by volume. The title of largest goes to Binance, which sees $47 billion in crypto trading volume in a 24-hour period, according to CoinMarketCap.com .</p><p><b>Who else owns Coinbase?</b></p><p>Venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, is the largest owner of Coinbase, boasting about 25% of Class A shares  and 14%% of Class B. The company was created just over a decade ago with the genesis of bitcoin  and is now in the midst of a moment that many in the industry have described as a tipping point .There are few ways to get direct ownership of crypto currencies, outside of buying them directly, a service that Coinbase provides for a fee, and what investors appear willing to be pay up for.Leeor Shimron, analyst at FundStrat Global Advisors, described the Coinbase listing as seminal. \"Coinbase's direct listing is a watershed moment for the crypto industry.\"Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said the listing is a reflection of the crypto's mainstream evolution.\"Coinbase is a foundational piece of the crypto ecosystem and is a barometer for the growing mainstream adoption of Bitcoin and crypto for the coming years in our opinion,\" he wrote in a research note Tuesday.Some caution that the implied valuations for Coinbase as a crypto exchange are too lofty , the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange.In a direct listing, a company floats its shares on a stock exchange, but without hiring banks to underwrite the transaction, like in an IPO.Here's what you need to know about the coming offering.What is Coinbase?The Silicon Valley crypto exchange was co-founded in 2012 by Brian Armstrong, 38, who runs the platform as chief executive. Fred Ehrsam, a Coinbase director, also helped to create the company.According to Forbes , Armstrong's networth is currently $6.5 billion based on his ownership in the company and his wealth is likely to increase if the direct listing goes off successfully.When will Coinbase go public?Coinbase will list on April 14. The precise timing of the list isn't clear but Palantir Technologies Inc.'s (PLTR)direct listing   after 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time.Where will it list?Coinbase is set to go public on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol \"COIN\" as a direct listing, meaning it isn't raising any new money, as a company would under a traditional IPO.Coinbase is the Nasdaq's first major direct listing, with Spotify $(SPOT)$, Slack Technologies (WORK) and most recently Palantir Technologies (PLTR) all opting to directly list at the NYSE.Valuations?Valuations for Coinbase vary from $50 billion to $150 billion based on some decentralized crypto platforms that attempt to replicate how the company's shares might trade. At the top end of the spectrum, Coinbase would be bigger than a number of U.S. exchanges, including ICE, Nasdaq, CME Group $(CME)$ and Cboe Global Markets $(CBOE)$.David Trainer, CEO of New Constructs, an investment research firm, said the crypto platform's value is ridiculously high. \"Even though Coinbase's revenue surged over the past 12 months, the company has little-to-no-chance of meeting the future profit expectations that are baked into its ridiculously high expected valuation of $100 billion,\" he said.\"Coinbase's expected valuation of $100 billion implies that its revenue will be 1.5x the combined 2020 revenues of two of the most established exchanges in the marketplace, Nasdaq Inc. $(NDAQ)$ and Intercontinental Exchange $(ICE)$, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange,\" he said.Trainer said that based on his calculation, Coinbase's valuation should be closer to $18.9 billion--an 81% decrease from the $100 billion expected valuation.'Not for the faint of heart'MoffettNathanson analyst Lisa Ellis explained to MarketWatch why the offering is, as she describes it \"not for the faint of heart,\" but why she initiated coverage of the exchange at a buy with a price-target of $600, even before it sees its first trade on the Nasdaq.\"I'm super super bullish on Coinbase...because you get the sense that they are a market leader in the space and crypto agnostic,\" she said.That said, she acknowledges that currently 90% of Coinbase's revenues are derived directly from retail trading, with most in the U.S. and trading centered primarily on the two largest cryptos: bitcoin and Ether  on the ethereum blockchain.\"So the implications is that Coinbase's revenues are correlated with the level of activity in cryto currency and especially bitcoin and ether.\"Ellis says investors need to have at least a one-year long-term investment strategy in bitcoin, which could still go to zero by some bearish accounts, but a three-year outlook is even better, because the crypto complex has tended to operate in three-year cycles of boom and then bust.Validation for crypto or a top?Some bulls see Coinbase as validation for the nascent crpyto industry.Alex Mashinsky, head of crypto-lending and trading platform Celsius Network, put it this way:\"We look at the Coinbase listing as an additional validation of the space, and a major PR opportunity for the entire industry to shine as the future of finance,\" he told MarketWatch via email.\"Coinbase has more users and more revenues than many of the largest Wall Street players and is more profitable than any major exchange, and this validation puts most skeptics at a crossroads having to re-evaluate their denial and frustration with the disruption coming at them from all sides.\"Others suggest that it may prove a new top for the market and put crypto prices under pressure after a precipitous rally in recent days and a fresh record for bitcoin.Yves Lamoureux, the president of Montreal-based macroeconomic research firm Lamoureux & Co., told MarketWatch that he is fearful that too much euphoria surrounds bitcoin and crypto and sees it due for a retrenchment as a result. \"Can you find out-there anyone with a bearish viewpoint?\" he asked. \"A resounding no,\" said Lamoureux.Is Coinbase the largest crypto exchange?Coinbase is the second-largest crypto platform, but the largest in the U.S., by volume. The title of largest goes to Binance, which sees $47 billion in crypto trading volume in a 24-hour period, according to CoinMarketCap.com .Who else owns Coinbase?Venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, is the largest owner of Coinbase, boasting about 25% of Class A shares  and 14%% of Class B.
