The global economy will get worse before it gets better, and that&#39;s going to be hit to the gut of Disney as a consumer-facing titan. Advertisers will pare back their marketing budgets for the company&#39;s TV and streaming businesses. The iconic theme parks segment that set new records in fiscal 2022 will be challenged. Box office returns will continue the systemic decline that&#39;s been happening for two decades.</p><p>Thankfully, the horizon is brighter than the pothole-filled road that lies immediately ahead. Let&#39;s start with Disney&#39;s media and entertainment distribution segment. Revenue rose 8% in fiscal 2022, as a 20% surge in its premium streaming business was enough to lift flat results at its legacy linear networks.</p><p>Disney+ -- along with Hulu and ESPN+ -- now account for nearly a quarter of the company&#39;s total revenue. The sticking point here is that the direct-to-consumer streaming business served up an operating deficit of more than $4 billion in the last fiscal year. The red ink at Disney+ is the main reason why Iger is here and dismissed CEO Bob Chapek is not. When the platform launched three years ago, the goal was for Disney+ to become profitable by the end of fiscal 2024. With losses widening, it didn&#39;t seem likely. As Iger&#39;s primary objective, you have to like his chances of getting the balance right on the streaming end. It may not happen in two years, but three years from now we could be there. A recent price hike and the addition of an ad-supported tier should help Disney+ in the quest to add to the media giant&#39;s bottom line instead of subtract from it by early 2026.</p><p>Ads will naturally come back to the market once consumers are spending again, and Disney&#39;s unmatched content catalog and franchises will continue to make it a desirable market for advertisers to reach. Despite<i>Avatar: The Way of Water</i> becoming the first film since 2019 to top $2 billion in worldwide ticket sales, theatrical distribution will continue to be a challenge for Disney and its peers. The good news is that the company already has strong and established streaming platforms that will help offset any weakness at the local multiplex.</p><p>Turning to Disney&#39;s theme parks business, the segment saved it over the past year as &#34;revenge travel&#34; became a thing. Folks paid a premium to get back to the leading theme park operator after scrapping vacation plans in 2020 and at least globally in 2021. This segment will see turnstile clicks slow this year if not next year if there isn&#39;t a soft landing to the mounting economic pressures, but Disney&#39;s gated attractions always bounce back.</p><p>The interesting year for the theme parks will be 2025, when its largest rival in Florida opens Epic Universe at Universal Orlando. Disney will need a response if it doesn&#39;t want to squander market share at its largest resort. Iger hasn&#39;t said a lot about the future of Disney&#39;s theme parks business, but if he really wants to cement his legacy -- and be able to stay away for good this time -- it will have to be about more than just turning Disney+ around. It&#39;s too late for Disney to have a new park in Florida to compete against Epic Universe when it opens, but the plans will likely be in place by then to keep patrons close and shareholders even closer.</p><p>Disney continues to be the class act of media stocks. Trailing revenue already exceeds its pre-pandemic peak of fiscal 2019. Analysts see adjusted earnings surpassing the all-time high of $7.08 a share it posted in fiscal 2018 by fiscal 2026. Box office returns will continue the systemic decline that's been happening for two decades.Thankfully, the horizon is brighter than the pothole-filled road that lies immediately ahead. Let's start with Disney's media and entertainment distribution segment. Revenue rose 8% in fiscal 2022, as a 20% surge in its premium streaming business was enough to lift flat results at its legacy linear networks.Disney+ -- along with Hulu and ESPN+ -- now account for nearly a quarter of the company's total revenue. The sticking point here is that the direct-to-consumer streaming business served up an operating deficit of more than $4 billion in the last fiscal year. The red ink at Disney+ is the main reason why Iger is here and dismissed CEO Bob Chapek is not. When the platform launched three years ago, the goal was for Disney+ to become profitable by the end of fiscal 2024. With losses widening, it didn't seem likely. They closed Friday at $72.16.</p><p>Through a spokeswoman, Ms. Wood declined to comment.</p><p>While many on Wall Street are cutting risk and bracing for a recession, Ms. Wood has been adding to riskier positions in recent weeks, buying more shares of cryptocurrency exchangeCoinbase GlobalInc. and a bitcoin futures ETF.</p><p>ARKK added 931,000 shares of Coinbase worth roughly $43 million in November, according to FactSet. Consider that in 2017, the company generated revenue of $414 million. In 2021, it generated revenue of nearly $10 billion -- up 24 times in just four years. And revenue through the first half of 2022 is up another impressive 44% year over year.</p><p>According to <i>Bloomberg</i>, Sea Limited just sent a memo to employees, saying that its top goal is to become cash-flow positive as quickly as possible. And as we&#39;ll see, it&#39;s pulling out all the stops to accomplish this. Here&#39;s what investors need to know.</p><h2>Why Sea Limited is pivoting toward profits</h2><p>In 2017, Sea Limited primarily generated revenue from its video game platform Garena, much of that coming from Asia with a concentration in its home Singapore market. Since then, the company has expanded its revenue sources to include e-commerce (through its Shopee platform) and digital payments (through its fintech arm SeaMoney). It&#39;s expanded and grown substantially in markets like Europe and Latin America.</p><p>Sea Limited is now prioritizing profits over growth because of how quickly the global financing market changed. In his memo to employees, founder and CEO Forrest Li explained, &#34;With investors fleeing for &#39;safe haven&#39; investments, we do not anticipate being able to raise funds in the market.&#34;</p><p>In short, Sea Limited grew and expanded rapidly. But it did so by relying heavily on cash from financing activities, as the chart below shows. And it can&#39;t keep dipping into that honey pot now that the macroeconomic environment is different.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a6de5c2491384ebaf7378436cf315ba\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"449\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>SE REVENUE (TTM) DATA BY YCHARTS.</span></p><p>To Li&#39;s point, the cost of capital rose. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates at the fastest pace in decades, giving investors much better returns on relatively risk-free assets. They&#39;re now less willing to lend money to companies like Sea Limited without demanding a much higher rate of return. Basically, the terms for borrowing money aren&#39;t as compelling as they were.</p><p>Similarly, the Federal Reserve has taken liquidity out of the system by shrinking its balance sheet. This has a side effect of causing stock valuations to drop. Sea Limited could raise funds by diluting shares as it&#39;s done in the past, but the terms are far less attractive. Sea Limited stock had ap rice-to-sales (P/S) valuation of over 30 in early 2021. Its valuation has plummeted more than 90% to a P/S ratio under 3 as of this writing -- an all-time low for the company.</p><p>Sea Limited isn&#39;t the only company pivoting in light of market conditions. For example, the parent company of Snapchat, <b>Snap</b>, released a memo to employees earlier this month, and tech website The Verge got hold of it. Snap&#39;s CEO reportedly said: &#34;Our business will be valued based on our ability to generate profits. We must adapt our strategy accordingly.&#34;</p><p>Snap is adapting to the market&#39;s preference for profitability, in part, by launching an enterprise division for its augmented-reality technology. But it&#39;s also cutting projects like its selfie drone. And as we&#39;ll see, Sea Limited is making cuts as well.</p><h2>What Sea Limited is giving up</h2><p>Sea Limited&#39;s video game segment, Garena, is its profitable venture. However, adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) for this segment fell 55% year over year in the second quarter of 2022 to $333.6 million, in part due to its hit <i>Free Fire</i>game being banned in India and also a general slowdown in the video game space.</p><p>However, Garena&#39;s struggles appear to be ongoing. According to a September Reuters report, about 15% of Garena&#39;s staff may have just been let go as Sea Limited pivots hard toward profits. Moreover, the same Reuters report says that Sea Limited is shutting down Shopee in Argentina altogether as well as shutting down local operations in Columbia, Chile, and Mexico -- cross-border shipments will still be allowed in those three countries. This follows Sea Limited pulling out of some European markets earlier this year.</p><p>Finally, back to the <i>Bloomberg</i> report, management is extremely serious about cash-flow positivity. It&#39;s reportedly forgoing paychecks for executives until Sea Limited reaches self-sufficiency. And revenue through the first half of 2022 is up another impressive 44% year over year.According to Bloomberg, Sea Limited just sent a memo to employees, saying that its top goal is to become cash-flow positive as quickly as possible. And as we'll see, it's pulling out all the stops to accomplish this. Here's what investors need to know.Why Sea Limited is pivoting toward profitsIn 2017, Sea Limited primarily generated revenue from its video game platform Garena, much of that coming from Asia with a concentration in its home Singapore market. Since then, the company has expanded its revenue sources to include e-commerce (through its Shopee platform) and digital payments (through its fintech arm SeaMoney). It's expanded and grown substantially in markets like Europe and Latin America.Sea Limited is now prioritizing profits over growth because of how quickly the global financing market changed. In his memo to employees, founder and CEO Forrest Li explained, \"With investors fleeing for 'safe haven' investments, we do not anticipate being able to raise funds in the market.\"In short, Sea Limited grew and expanded rapidly. But it did so by relying heavily on cash from financing activities, as the chart below shows. And it can't keep dipping into that honey pot now that the macroeconomic environment is different.SE REVENUE (TTM) DATA BY YCHARTS.To Li's point, the cost of capital rose. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates at the fastest pace in decades, giving investors much better returns on relatively risk-free assets. They're now less willing to lend money to companies like Sea Limited without demanding a much higher rate of return. Basically, the terms for borrowing money aren't as compelling as they were.Similarly, the Federal Reserve has taken liquidity out of the system by shrinking its balance sheet. This has a side effect of causing stock valuations to drop. Sea Limited could raise funds by diluting shares as it's done in the past, but the terms are far less attractive. Sea Limited stock had ap rice-to-sales (P/S) valuation of over 30 in early 2021. Its valuation has plummeted more than 90% to a P/S ratio under 3 as of this writing -- an all-time low for the company.Sea Limited isn't the only company pivoting in light of market conditions. For example, the parent company of Snapchat, Snap, released a memo to employees earlier this month, and tech website The Verge got hold of it. Snap's CEO reportedly said: \"Our business will be valued based on our ability to generate profits. We must adapt our strategy accordingly.\"Snap is adapting to the market's preference for profitability, in part, by launching an enterprise division for its augmented-reality technology. But it's also cutting projects like its selfie drone. And as we'll see, Sea Limited is making cuts as well.What Sea Limited is giving upSea Limited's video game segment, Garena, is its profitable venture. However, adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) for this segment fell 55% year over year in the second quarter of 2022 to $333.6 million, in part due to its hit Free Firegame being banned in India and also a general slowdown in the video game space.However, Garena's struggles appear to be ongoing. According to a September Reuters report, about 15% of Garena's staff may have just been let go as Sea Limited pivots hard toward profits. Moreover, the same Reuters report says that Sea Limited is shutting down Shopee in Argentina altogether as well as shutting down local operations in Columbia, Chile, and Mexico -- cross-border shipments will still be allowed in those three countries. This follows Sea Limited pulling out of some European markets earlier this year.Finally, back to the Bloomberg report, management is extremely serious about cash-flow positivity. The 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus has &#34;the best battery life ever in an iPhone,&#34; the company said.</p><p>All told, the iPhone 14 models &#34;have incredible new features that will help our users in meaningful ways,&#34; Apple chief executive Tim Cook said at Wednesday&#39;s unveiling.</p><p>How meaningful those upgrades really are remains to be seen. But there&#39;s no denying that the birth of the iPhone 15 years ago marked the beginning of a new, more intimate relationship between humans and their phones. Some might say that connection has morphed into codependency; people can&#39;t seem to function without their smartphones.</p><p>Is now the time to take that relationship to the next level and get a new iPhone?</p><h2>Why it matters</h2><p>&#34;I think keeping the price at $799 was a brilliant move on Apple&#39;s part,&#34; said Charles Lindsey, associate professor of Marketing, University at Buffalo School of Management a professor at the University at Buffalo. &#34;By not raising the price, they will not only capture early sales from the Apple innovators/early adopters (who typically buy new versions as soon as possible) but they will also pull in/convert your more mainstream users (who are typically slower to upgrade).&#34;</p><p>The iPhone 14 comes in &#34;stunning&#34; colors including deep purple and starlight. Those pretty hues contrast with some gloomy economic data in the U.S: Record-high inflation has pushed Americans&#39; cost of living way up, home prices and rents have soared, and credit card debt has piled up as pandemic-related government relief has receded. The labor market remains extremely tight, but some companies have been laying off employees or freezing hiring.</p><p>All of that may make consumers skittish about shelling out close to $1,000 on a phone. Which may explain Apple&#39;s decision to keep the base price of the iPhone 14 exactly the same as the starting price for the iPhone 13, unveiled in 2021.</p><p>The price isn&#39;t the only thing that didn&#39;t budge.</p><p>&#34;The base iPhone 14 model is actually almost identical to the 13,&#34; said Melanie Pinola, a senior writer and editor on the smartphone beat at Consumer Reports.</p><p>Based on what Pinola saw at Wednesday&#39;s unveiling, it appears that the iPhone 14 has the same display, processor, overall design and the same battery as the 13. &#34;If you have a 13, I don&#39;t know if I would switch to a 14 this year,&#34; Pinola said. &#34;There are small improvements with the 14, but I wouldn&#39;t say I would rush out right now.&#34;</p><p>The most notable change among the iPhone 14 models is the new larger version, the iPhone 14 Plus, with a 6.7-inch display, which is similar in size to the Samsung  Galaxy S22, Pinola said. &#34;This is the first time that Apple has ever made a large screen phone under $1,000, so it&#39;s more accessible for people who want a larger phone,&#34; Pinola told MarketWatch.</p><h2>The verdict</h2><p>Skip the iPhone 14, unless your existing phone is on life support. &#34;If you&#39;re not able to get security or software updates, it&#39;s definitely time to get a new phone,&#34; Pinola said.</p><h2>My reasons</h2><p>Tech companies have trained us to line up for new products on their schedule. But should Apple dictate when you spend money? Maybe that&#39;s how it became one of the world&#39;s most profitable companies. But blindly following Apple&#39;s marching orders is not how you will become the most profitable version of yourself.</p><h2>Is my verdict best for you?</h2><p>On the other hand, the fact that Apple kept the starting price the same on the iPhone 14 could make an upgrade easier to swallow, said Philip Michaels, U.S. managing editor at the product review site Tom&#39;s Guide.</p><p>&#34;People who bought the iPhone 13 last year are probably still very happy with their phones and will have little reason to upgrade,&#34; Michaels told MarketWatch. &#34;And given Apple&#39;s track record of lengthy software support -- iOS 16 works fine on phones released five years ago -- it&#39;s easy to hold onto your current iPhone for a long time.&#34;</p><p>&#34;That said, if you&#39;ve got an iPhone 11 or earlier, you will definitely notice an improvement in performance, even with the A15 Bionic chip on the iPhone 14 as opposed to the more advanced A16 Bionic powering the Pro models. Cameras figure to produce better results, too, though testing Apple&#39;s new phones will confirm that. Because Apple held the pricing at iPhone 13 levels despite the rumors of price hikes, an upgrade is even easier to justify,&#34; Michaels said.</p><p>Another possible incentive to upgrade: deals available through Apple can cut up to $800 off the price tag of the iPhone 14, and major mobile phone carriers including AT&amp;T <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/T\">$(T)$</a>, T-Mobile <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TMUS\">$(TMUS)$</a> and Verizon <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/VZ\">$(VZ)$</a>, are offering discounts as well.</p><p>If you&#39;re trying to decide whether to upgrade, don&#39;t forget about the value of your existing phone, said Josh Lowitz co-founder of Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, publisher of the upcoming CIRP-Apple report on Substack.</p><p>&#34;Used iPhones have real value, as trade-ins or hand-me-downs to family or friends,&#34; Lowitz said. &#34;Our data shows that about half of new iPhone buyers trade-in or sell their old phone, and more than a third of those who monetize their old phone, report that it was worth more than $300.&#34;</p><p>Retail promotions, including enhanced trade-in offers, can reduce the cost of ownership further, he noted.</p><p>Another key point: mobile carriers are offering longer payment plans. In the past, phone purchases were generally broken up into 24 or even 18 or 20 payments. Now, 30 and 36 monthly payment plans are common, Lowitz said.</p><p>&#34;That reduces the monthly outlay, though it postpones the relief of making that final payment, and the new phone buyer needs to be confident that their phone will serve them that long. Even with the strong residual value of an iPhone, a buyer with 36 payments may have negative equity in their phone into their third year of ownership,&#34; Lowitz said.</p><p>Apple shares closed almost 1% up Wednesday after the iPhone 14 event, but they are down 12% year to date. In the past, phone purchases were generally broken up into 24 or even 18 or 20 payments. Now, 30 and 36 monthly payment plans are common, Lowitz said.</p><p>&#34;That reduces the monthly outlay, though it postpones the relief of making that final payment, and the new phone buyer needs to be confident that their phone will serve them that long. Revenue climbed 29% year over year to $2.9 billion, led by revenue increases for both its e-commerce and digital financial services segments. However, net loss ballooned, more than doubling year over year from $433.7 million in Q2 of 2021 to $931.2 million a year later.</p><p>It also didn&#39;t help that Sea Limited&#39;s operating metrics remained weak, especially for its profitable digital entertainment division, Garena. The number of quarterly active users declined by 15% year over year to 619.3 million but managed to edge up 0.6% higher than the previous quarter&#39;s 615.9 million. The number of quarterly paying users, however, reported its third consecutive quarter-over-quarter decline, falling 8.6% from 1Q2022 to 56.1 million in 2Q2022. On a year-over-year basis, this metric registered a steep 39% plunge.</p><p>Things were somewhat better over at the company&#39;s e-commerce arm, Shopee. Gross orders jumped by 42% year over year to 2 billion, while gross merchandise value rose 27% year over year to $19 billion.  Sea&#39;s digital financial services division, SeaMoney, saw a healthy 53% year-over-year jump in quarterly active users that led to a 36% year-over-year increase in total payment volume for the company&#39;s mobile wallet.</p><h2>Now what</h2><p>Despite the strong numbers at Shopee, various news outlets reported that the division had withdrawn some job offers for positions at its headquarters in Singapore. This move suggests that the unit is slowing down its hiring in anticipation of a slump in consumer demand and spending as the world is wracked by high inflation and the looming threat of a recession.</p><p>Sea Limited&#39;s gaming unit is also slowing down on its livestream platform and reportedly shutting down projects as the group strives to limit its cash burn rate. Employees at Garena were also told there would be job cuts as the company attempts to boost profitability. Demand for cybersecurity software remained robust in the face of ongoing macroeconomic weakness.</p><p>For the quarter, CrowdStrike (ticker: CRWD) posted revenue of $535.2 million, up 58% from a year ago, and above both the company&#39;s guidance range of $512.7 million to $516.8 million and Street consensus at $515 million.</p><p>On an adjusted basis, the company earned 36 cents a share in the quarter, above both the company&#39;s forecast for 27 to 28 cents, and Street consensus at 28 cents. Under generally accepted accounting principles, CrowdStrike lost $49.3 million, or 21 cents a share, narrowing from a loss of $57.3 million, or 25 cents a share, in the year ago quarter.</p><p>The company said annual recurring revenue reached $2.15 billion, up 59% from a year ago, adding 1,741 net new customers in the quarter, boosting the total to 19,686 customers. That&#39;s up 51% from a year earlier.</p><p>&#34;As organizations respond to macroeconomic conditions, they are prioritizing investments and looking to standardize with a security partner they can trust to achieve better protection with less time, fewer resources and lower total cost of ownership,&#34; CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said in a statement.</p><p>For the October quarter, CrowdStrike sees revenue of $569.1 million to $575.9 million, with non-GAAP profits of 30 to 32 cents a share; Street consensus estimates had been revenue of $568.5 million and profits of 28 cents a share.</p><p>For the full fiscal year ending in January, CrowdStrike now sees revenue of $2.223 billion to $2.232, up from a previous forecast of $2.2 billion. The company now sees full year non-GAAP profits of $1.31 to $1.33 a share, up from a previous forecast range of $1.18 to $1.22 a share.</p><p>CrowdStrike said the revised guidance &#34;reflects our technology advantage and strong industry tailwinds combined with a pragmatic view of current macroeconomic conditions.&#34;</p><p>In late trading, CrowdStrike stock is up 0.08% to $193.44. BofA also predicts PC revenue will shrink 9% this year.</p><h2>‘Overbought’ PC Categories</h2><p>“All PC categories except commercial desktops and workstations were overbought during the last two years,” they said.</p><p>“We expect the overbought categories to see lower demand levels at least through 2023. We expect revenues to see less erosion versus units, as inflationary costs and richer configurations should provide some pricing support.”</p><p>As for PC stocks, the Nasdaq Computer stock index, has dropped 24.7% so far this year, compared to a more modest 14.9%  slide for the S&amp;P 500</p><p>“We cut our 2022 and 2023 estimates for PCs for <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DELL\">Dell Technologies</a> and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/HPQ\">HP</a>, but leave <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AAPL\">Apple</a> unchanged,” the analysts said.</p><p>“We maintain our underperform on HPQ, as we expect earnings in not only their PC, but also their print business to see mean reversion after being outsized covid beneficiaries.”</p><h2>Buy Rating on Dell, Apple</h2><p>Looking at Dell, “we see its PC business as a structural out-grower versus the overall market, and see scope for further revenue share gains in this segment,” the analysts said.</p><p>“For 2024, we see larger benefit for Dell than HPQ, as it has higher exposure to commercial PCs, which on aggregate have shorter replacement cycles versus consumer PCs,” they said.</p><p>“Our analysis implies that commercial PCs will see better unit growth from 2022-2024 compared to consumer PCs. This is because … excluding Chromebooks, commercial desktops and workstations were underbought” earlier in the pandemic.</p><p>Getting back to Dell it also can gain revenue share in storage and servers, the analysts said. You can see below that <b>Blink Charging</b> (BLNK -0.76%), <b>ChargePoint Holdings</b> (CHPT -2.01%), and <b>EVgo</b> (EVGO -2.33%) are all losing about as much as they&#39;re making in revenue right now.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6de3f04602128e583e1e5eeabacad000\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"387\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>BLNK Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts</p><p>These companies are investing in growth, but they&#39;re doing so at an unsustainable rate. And it&#39;s not clear there will be a profitable market for them when they reach maturity.</p><h2>There&#39;s no moat in EV charging</h2><p>Ask yourself why you would choose one charger over another. The plugs are the same, the electricity is the same, there&#39;s literally no difference between one charger and the next.</p><p>This makes the charging business a commodity, whether you&#39;re selling physical chargers or electricity to customers directly. We&#39;ve seen that with <b>General Motors</b>&#39; (GM 0.83%) partnership with seven charging networks to service GM vehicles. GM will create the app for vehicles to find chargers and collect payment, and users will essentially be offered white-label charging from companies like Blink, ChargePoint, and EVgo.</p><p>If electricity wasn&#39;t readily available and chargers didn&#39;t use common plugs, there may be more potential for a moat to form. But the industry is moving toward commodification of almost everything about charging.</p><h2>The business model is unclear at best</h2><p>What&#39;s the right business model for EV charging companies? Do they just sell chargers and let manufacturers, retailers, and even gas stations put their own logos on chargers? Do they build out networks in the hopes of attracting customers to charge with them?</p><p>I actually think chargers will become such a commodity that they&#39;ll be a feature to draw customers to restaurants, retailers, and malls. Why stop at one fast food spot over another on a road trip? What if one has chargers? The same benefit can be given to shoppers at big-box retailers or malls.</p><p>No matter the business model that succeeds, it&#39;s hard to see how charging companies will be able to justify their current valuations.</p><h2>A market to stay away from</h2><p>EV charging stocks continue to have high valuations, but their financials are terrible, they don&#39;t have a moat, and it&#39;s not even clear what a successful business model will be long-term. Here's why these businesses are facing enormous headwinds long-term.Financials are terribleThe business of making EV chargers and selling electricity to drivers is a money loser, and looks like it will be one for years to come. You can see below that Blink Charging (BLNK -0.76%), ChargePoint Holdings (CHPT -2.01%), and EVgo (EVGO -2.33%) are all losing about as much as they're making in revenue right now.BLNK Revenue (TTM) data by YChartsThese companies are investing in growth, but they're doing so at an unsustainable rate. And it's not clear there will be a profitable market for them when they reach maturity.There's no moat in EV chargingAsk yourself why you would choose one charger over another. The plugs are the same, the electricity is the same, there's literally no difference between one charger and the next.This makes the charging business a commodity, whether you're selling physical chargers or electricity to customers directly. We've seen that with General Motors' (GM 0.83%) partnership with seven charging networks to service GM vehicles. GM will create the app for vehicles to find chargers and collect payment, and users will essentially be offered white-label charging from companies like Blink, ChargePoint, and EVgo.If electricity wasn't readily available and chargers didn't use common plugs, there may be more potential for a moat to form. But the industry is moving toward commodification of almost everything about charging.The business model is unclear at bestWhat's the right business model for EV charging companies? Do they just sell chargers and let manufacturers, retailers, and even gas stations put their own logos on chargers? Do they build out networks in the hopes of attracting customers to charge with them?I actually think chargers will become such a commodity that they'll be a feature to draw customers to restaurants, retailers, and malls. Why stop at one fast food spot over another on a road trip? What if one has chargers? The same benefit can be given to shoppers at big-box retailers or malls.No matter the business model that succeeds, it's hard to see how charging companies will be able to justify their current valuations.A market to stay away fromEV charging stocks continue to have high valuations, but their financials are terrible, they don't have a moat, and it's not even clear what a successful business model will be long-term.
