Fool","summary":"Don't underestimate JD and these two other e-commerce companies.","content":"
Alibaba (NYSE:BABA), China's top e-commerce and cloud company, lost nearly 10% of its value from January to late May, underperforming many industry peers. An antitrust probe in China, tighter auditing standards in the U.S., and the rotation from growth to value stocks all weighed down its stock.
\n
Alibaba's stock might look cheap at 18 times forward earnings, but analysts still expect its earnings to dip 3% this year as it absorbs a record $2.75 billion antitrust fine. It will also need to halt its exclusive deals with big brands, which could soften its defenses against smaller e-commerce marketplaces.
\n
And that's not all. Alibaba could be forced to divest its media assets and share its user data with the government, while its fintech affiliate, Ant Group, will be more tightly regulated as a financial holding company. Alibaba might weather all these headwinds and recover over the long term, but its stock could remain dead money for the foreseeable future.
\n
Instead of betting on Alibaba's potential comeback, investors should consider buying shares of Chinese tech stocks that aren't in regulatory crosshairs. These three e-commerce companies fit the bill: JD.com (NASDAQ:JD), Pinduoduo (NASDAQ:PDD), and Baozun (NASDAQ:BZUN).
\n
\n
1. JD.com
\n
JD.com is China's second-largest e-commerce company after Alibaba. However, it's actually the country's largest direct retailer, since it generates most of its revenue from its first-party marketplace.
\n
Unlike Alibaba, which generates most of its e-commerce revenue from third-party sellers on Taobao and Tmall, JD takes on its own inventories and fulfills orders with its logistics network. This business model is more capital-intensive, but it shields its buyers from fake products.
\n
Alibaba's co-founder, Jack Ma, once said JD's lower-margin business model would end in a \"tragedy,\" but economies of scale gradually kicked in and enabled it to generate consistent profits. JD's logistics arm also balanced out its costs by offering its services to third-party customers.
\n
JD's revenue and adjusted earnings rose 29% and 57%, respectively, in 2020. It ended the first quarter with nearly 500 million annual active consumers, and analysts expect its revenue and earnings to grow another 26% and 13%, respectively, this year.
\n
JD doesn't face as much regulatory heat as Alibaba, it margins are expanding, and the stock trades at just 28 times forward earnings estimates and less than 1 times estimated sales.
\n
2. Pinduoduo
\n
Pinduoduo is the third-largest e-commerce player in China in terms of annual revenue, but in terms of total shoppers, it's actually bigger than JD, with 628 million annual active buyers. Like Alibaba, Pinduoduo generates most of its revenue through listing fees and ads for third-party merchants.
\n
\n
Pinduoduo carved out a niche with its discount marketplace, which encouraged shoppers to team up for group discounts. That strategy, which relied heavily on users sharing links across social networks, caught on across China's lower-tier cities.
\n
Pinduoduo subsequently expanded into China's top-tier cities and partnered with bigger brands to challenge Alibaba and JD. It also gained an early mover's advantage in online agriculture by enabling over 12 million farmers to directly ship their produce to customers.
\n
Pinduoduo's revenue surged 97% in 2020, then soared another 239% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2021. Analysts expect its revenue to grow 92% for the full year. Those estimates are impressive for a stock that trades at about eight times this year's sales.
\n
Pinduoduo is still unprofitable due to its aggressive discounts, subsidies for sellers, and the expansion of its logistics network. However, its adjusted operating and net losses still narrowed year-over-year last quarter, and it could gradually inch toward profitability as it increases its scale.
\n
3. Baozun
\n
Baozun is sometimes called the \"Shopify of China\", but that comparison is misleading. Unlike Shopify, which provides self-serve e-commerce services to smaller businesses, Baozun mainly provides end-to-end e-commerce solutions to large international companies.
\n
It can be difficult for large U.S. companies to build Chinese websites, launch marketing campaigns, and set up e-commerce marketplaces, so Baozun is a \"one-stop shop\" that handles all those needs. It also helps companies integrate their online marketplaces with Tmall, JD, and Pinduoduo, which makes it a well-balanced play on China's booming e-commerce sector.
\n
Baozun's business model is capital-intensive, but it expanded its margins in recent years by pivoting from a \"distribution-based\" model, in which it directly fulfilled orders, to a \"non-distribution\" based model, which allows its clients to directly ship their products to their customers.
\n
Baozun's revenue and adjusted earnings increased 22% and 50%, respectively, in 2020. Ninety-two percent of its GMV (gross merchandise volume) came from its non-distribution-based business. An antitrust probe in China, tighter auditing standards in the U.S., and the rotation from growth to value stocks all weighed down its stock.\nAlibaba's stock might look cheap at 18 times forward earnings, but analysts still expect its earnings to dip 3% this year as it absorbs a record $2.75 billion antitrust fine. It will also need to halt its exclusive deals with big brands, which could soften its defenses against smaller e-commerce marketplaces.\nAnd that's not all. Alibaba could be forced to divest its media assets and share its user data with the government, while its fintech affiliate, Ant Group, will be more tightly regulated as a financial holding company. Alibaba might weather all these headwinds and recover over the long term, but its stock could remain dead money for the foreseeable future.\nInstead of betting on Alibaba's potential comeback, investors should consider buying shares of Chinese tech stocks that aren't in regulatory crosshairs. These three e-commerce companies fit the bill: JD.com (NASDAQ:JD), Pinduoduo (NASDAQ:PDD), and Baozun (NASDAQ:BZUN).\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. JD.com\nJD.com is China's second-largest e-commerce company after Alibaba. However, it's actually the country's largest direct retailer, since it generates most of its revenue from its first-party marketplace.\nUnlike Alibaba, which generates most of its e-commerce revenue from third-party sellers on Taobao and Tmall, JD takes on its own inventories and fulfills orders with its logistics network. This business model is more capital-intensive, but it shields its buyers from fake products.\nAlibaba's co-founder, Jack Ma, once said JD's lower-margin business model would end in a \"tragedy,\" but economies of scale gradually kicked in and enabled it to generate consistent profits. JD's logistics arm also balanced out its costs by offering its services to third-party customers.\nJD's revenue and adjusted earnings rose 29% and 57%, respectively, in 2020. It ended the first quarter with nearly 500 million annual active consumers, and analysts expect its revenue and earnings to grow another 26% and 13%, respectively, this year.\nJD doesn't face as much regulatory heat as Alibaba, it margins are expanding, and the stock trades at just 28 times forward earnings estimates and less than 1 times estimated sales.\n2. Pinduoduo\nPinduoduo is the third-largest e-commerce player in China in terms of annual revenue, but in terms of total shoppers, it's actually bigger than JD, with 628 million annual active buyers. Like Alibaba, Pinduoduo generates most of its revenue through listing fees and ads for third-party merchants.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nPinduoduo carved out a niche with its discount marketplace, which encouraged shoppers to team up for group discounts. That strategy, which relied heavily on users sharing links across social networks, caught on across China's lower-tier cities.\nPinduoduo subsequently expanded into China's top-tier cities and partnered with bigger brands to challenge Alibaba and JD. It also gained an early mover's advantage in online agriculture by enabling over 12 million farmers to directly ship their produce to customers.\nPinduoduo's revenue surged 97% in 2020, then soared another 239% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2021. Analysts expect its revenue to grow 92% for the full year. Those estimates are impressive for a stock that trades at about eight times this year's sales.\nPinduoduo is still unprofitable due to its aggressive discounts, subsidies for sellers, and the expansion of its logistics network. However, its adjusted operating and net losses still narrowed year-over-year last quarter, and it could gradually inch toward profitability as it increases its scale.\n3. Baozun\nBaozun is sometimes called the \"Shopify of China\", but that comparison is misleading. Unlike Shopify, which provides self-serve e-commerce services to smaller businesses, Baozun mainly provides end-to-end e-commerce solutions to large international companies.\nIt can be difficult for large U.S. companies to build Chinese websites, launch marketing campaigns, and set up e-commerce marketplaces, so Baozun is a \"one-stop shop\" that handles all those needs. It also helps companies integrate their online marketplaces with Tmall, JD, and Pinduoduo, which makes it a well-balanced play on China's booming e-commerce sector.\nBaozun's business model is capital-intensive, but it expanded its margins in recent years by pivoting from a \"distribution-based\" model, in which it directly fulfilled orders, to a \"non-distribution\" based model, which allows its clients to directly ship their products to their customers.\nBaozun's revenue and adjusted earnings increased 22% and 50%, respectively, in 2020. Ninety-two percent of its GMV (gross merchandise volume) came from its non-distribution-based business. Analysts expect its revenue and adjusted earnings to rise 35% and 5%, respectively, this year.\nThis oft-overlooked stock trades at just 19 times forward earnings and 1.5 times this year's sales, which might make it an undervalued growth stock if investors fall in love with Chinese tech companies again.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":238,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9091842648,"gmtCreate":1643845827810,"gmtModify":1676533862057,"author":{"id":"3578570760040163","authorId":"3578570760040163","name":"hmmwvms","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a906b2444a1aca7cd161a6e1ee03687e","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578570760040163","authorIdStr":"3578570760040163"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$PayPal(PYPL)$are we still pals? It hasn’t provided revenue guidance since the start of the pandemic, citing uncertainty. This is Apple’s second quarter in a row with double-digit growth in all product categories. Apple CFO Luca Maestri told analysts that the company expects June quarter revenue to rise by double digits year-over-year, although it faces some supply shortages due to the worldwide chip shortage.

Apple has said in the past months that its business has been boosted by the pandemic as consumers and businesses bought computers to work and entertain themselves while at home. But Apple’s strong results in the quarter suggest that the trend may persist as more economies open up.

Or, as Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement: “This quarter reflects both the enduring ways our products have helped our users meet this moment in their own lives, as well as the optimism consumers seem to feel about better days ahead for all of us.”

Mac sales were up 70%, and Cook said that the result was “fueled by” the company’s introduction of its Mac laptops that used its own M1 chips for longer battery life, instead of processors sold by Intel. iPad sales were up nearly 79% year-over-year.

Neither of those results include iPad Pro or iMac models the company announced in March, which are expected to drive additional demand.

“We’re seeing strong first-time buyers on the Mac … it continues to run just south of 50%,” Cook told CNBC’s Josh Lipton. “And, in China, it’s even higher than that … it’s more around two-thirds. And that speaks to people preferring to work on the Mac.”

Apple’s iPhone also reported strong results this quarter, quelling fears that the current annual cycle could slow down. Last year, Apple released iPhones with a new exterior design and 5G support, which many investors believed could prompt a major upgrade cycle, which this quarter’s results indicate.

In greater China, which includes the mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Apple’s revenue increased over 87% year-over-year to $17.73 billion, although the comparison is to a quarter last year in which China was largely shut down in the early days of the pandemic. Every other geographical category, including the Americas and Europe, were also up on an annual basis.

Apple’s high-margin services business, including iCloud, App Store, and subscriptions like Apple Music, also showed 26.7% growth.

One metric that Apple uses to show the growth in services is the number of subscriptions it has, which not only include its own subscriptions like Apple One, but also subscriptions through its App Store.

“We now have over 660 million paid subscriptions across the services on the platform, and that’s up 40 million from the previous quarter, which is an acceleration from 35 million,” Cook told CNBC.

However, Apple’s App Store has been challenged by lawmakers and companies that say it costs too much and has too much power. A closely-watched trial with Fortnite maker Epic Games over App Store policies kicks off next week.

“The App Store has been an economic miracle. Last year, the estimates are that there was over a half a trillion dollars of economic activity because of the store. And, so, this has been just an economic gamechanger for not only the United States, but several countries around the world. And, we’re going to go in and tell our story. And we’ll see where it goes. He was a top lieutenant to Musk and the brains behind the ramp up of Model 3 production in 2018. The executive previously served as president of Tesla’s automotive business, and was named head of heavy trucking in March of this year.

“That is a huge and unexpected loss,” Pierre Ferragu, an analyst at New Street Research who has a buy recommendation on the Tesla shares, said in an email. He added the news is part of a pattern of high-level executive departures at the company. “Jerome’s contribution to Tesla will remain part of the company and the company will continue to attract other top-guns.”

Tesla fell as much as 0.8% in postmarket trading Monday after closing up 1% to $605.13. The stock is down about 14% this year.

Guillen, who is French, joined Tesla in the fall of 2010 as the program director for the Model S, the breakthrough electric vehicle which laid the groundwork for the crossover Model X and more mass market Model 3 that followed. He was 48 years old as of Tesla’s latest annual report.

Guillen didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Turnover Struggle

Tesla has struggled with executive turnover for years. Guillen took a several-months-long leave of absence from the company in 2015 but returned in 2016 to lead the company’s Semi truck program. He was promoted in 2018 to serve as the head of automotive operations.

The executive is known for building an assembly line against all odds in a tent outside of Tesla’s auto plant in Fremont, California. He was a top lieutenant to Musk and the brains behind the ramp up of Model 3 production in 2018. The executive previously served as president of Tesla’s automotive business, and was named head of heavy trucking in March of this year.“That is a huge and unexpected loss,” Pierre Ferragu, an analyst at New Street Research who has a buy recommendation on the Tesla shares, said in an email. He added the news is part of a pattern of high-level executive departures at the company. “Jerome’s contribution to Tesla will remain part of the company and the company will continue to attract other top-guns.”Tesla fell as much as 0.8% in postmarket trading Monday after closing up 1% to $605.13. The stock is down about 14% this year.Guillen, who is French, joined Tesla in the fall of 2010 as the program director for the Model S, the breakthrough electric vehicle which laid the groundwork for the crossover Model X and more mass market Model 3 that followed. He was 48 years old as of Tesla’s latest annual report.Guillen didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.Turnover StruggleTesla has struggled with executive turnover for years. The S&P 500 gained about 0.2% to another record close 4,255.15, boosted by the technology sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 85.85 points, or nearly 0.3%, to 34,393,75.\nInvestors are giving growth and tech stocks another chance as bond yields come down. The 10-year Treasury fell below 1.43% on Friday, a three-month low. Cathie Wood’s Ark Innovation, an ETF that focuses on disruptive technology, returned about 6% last week. The fund rose 1.9% Monday even as the benchmark Treasury yield rose briefly back to 1.5%. Apple and Netflix both jumped more than 2%, while Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook also registered gains.\nBoosting cryptocurrency sentiment, Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Sunday said the company will resume bitcoin transactions once it confirms there is reasonable clean energy usage by miners. Bitcoin recovered back above $40,000 Monday. Tesla, a big holder of bitcoin, climbed nearly 1.3%.\n“The broad market’s modest performance is pretty much in line with historical patterns— specifically, June’s tendency for generally quiet trading,” said Chris Larkin, managing director of trading at E-Trade Financial. “As the market continues to sort through potential moves made by the Fed and looming inflation, we could continue to see this narrative play out in the short-term.”\nThe Fed’s two-day policy meeting will likely dominate investor behavior this week. Although the central bank is not expected to take any action, its forecasts for interest rates, inflation and the economy could move the markets. The Fed could possibly move up its forecast for a rate hike after saying in its last quarterly update that it would keep its benchmark rate near zero through 2023,the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.\nFed Chairman Jerome Powell will speak to the press after the central bank issues its statement Wednesday. Traders will be parsing his comments for any clues as to when the Fed could start to end its aggressive monthly asset purchases, especially given recent hotter-than-expected inflation readings.\nBillionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones said this week’s Fed meeting could be the most important in Powell’s career, and he warned that the chairman could spark a big sell-off in risk assets if he doesn’t do a good job of signaling a taper.\n“If they course correct, if they say, ‘We’ve got incoming data, we’ve accomplished our mission or we’re on the way very rapidly to accomplishing our mission on employment,’ then you’re going to get a taper tantrum,” Tudor Jones said. “You’re going to get a sell-off in fixed income. You’re going to get a correction in stocks.”\nU.S. stocks ended last week with a record closing high for the S&P 500 and the beginning of a rotation back into growth names.\nLast week, the 30-stock Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.8%, but the S&P 500 rose 0.4%, for its third straight positive week. The Nasdaq Composite was the outperformer with a gain of nearly 1.9%, posting its fourth winning week in a row as the tech trade came back into favor.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":173,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":104096274,"gmtCreate":1620344267298,"gmtModify":1704342167844,"author":{"id":"3578570760040163","authorId":"3578570760040163","name":"hmmwvms","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a906b2444a1aca7cd161a6e1ee03687e","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578570760040163","authorIdStr":"3578570760040163"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Square the earnings too! While careful not to derail the recovery - with no end in sight for supportive policy measures such as bond-buying - the rate-rise signal highlighted concerns about inflation.
\n
\"I think there was a scenario that people had in mind, that the Fed was going to allow for a larger and longer inflation overshoot, and I think with the increase in the dot plot yesterday... people are rethinking that scenario,\" said David Lefkowitz, head of equities for the Americas at UBS Global Wealth Management.
\n
Technology shares, which generally perform better when interest rates are low, powered a rally on Wall Street last year as investors flocked to stocks seen as relatively safe during times of economic turmoil.
\n
Investors returned to such positions on Thursday. Rather than launch rockets from the ground, like competitors such as Rocket Lab or Astra, the company’s aircraft carries its LauncherOne rockets up to about 45,000 feet altitude and drops them just before they fire the engine and accelerate into space –a method the company touts as more flexiblethan a ground-based system.\nLauncherOne is designed to carry small satellites that weigh up to 500 kilograms, or about 1,100 pounds, into space. The social-media giant could have permanently banned then-President Donald Trump on Jan. 7, after he used the platform to lie about the 2020 election and praise rioters trying to seize control of the US Capitol the day before. Trump and his supporters would have squealed, but decisive action by Facebook would have left them no choice: Deal with it.

Instead, Facebook (FB) suspended Trump’s account “indefinitely,” while asking the company’s “oversight board”—a group of outside policy experts—to recommend a permanent solution. On May 5, the board “upheld” Facebook’s decision to exile Trump, but it alsodinged Facebook for the arbitrary application of vague standards. Instead of handing the company a simple answer, it told Facebook to come up with a permanent solution of its own within six months.

Have you ever watched an overwrought parent try to negotiate with a misbehaving five-year-old? Instead of telling the kid to stop being a brat, the parent tries to persuade the child why it’s important to stop being a brat, hoping the child will stop being a brat because he sees the light and learns an important life lesson in the process. You want to shout, “just tell him to stop it!”

This is what’s going on with Facebook and its oversight board. Facebook is trying to dodge responsibility for making a decision sure to be unpopular with some of its users. The oversight board, relishing its own perceived importance, issued an11,800 word communiquethat didn’t resolve anything. The real answer is painfully obvious: Facebook should permanently ban anybody who’s a chronic liar and violence inciter. Yet nobody in Faceworld can say it.

Let’s quickly review what’s really happening in the Facebook saga, by annotating the motives of the key players. It won’t take thousands of words.

Donald Trump. He wants the largest possible audience for his propaganda, includinghis lies about the 2020 election being stolenfrom him. Trump is a wannabe despot whoclaims persecutionto distract followers from his aberrant behavior and his election losses. It also helps him raise money from gullible sympathizers. As a private-sector entity, Facebook has the right to boot users who cause the company trouble, which Trump clearly did. There’s no free speech or First Amendment issue at all, because Trump is still free to publish his own views on a platform of his own. If it were a free speech issue, Facebook could cite the First Amendment to declare it faces no obligation to publish anybody's views, just as a newspaper doesn't have to run government manifestoes. Trump's claim of “censorship” is ridiculous, but it obviously keeps him in the news and fires up his supporters.

The Trump cult.Echoing Trump, other Republican politiciansclaim Facebook and other social-media sites single out conservatives for “censorship.” They’re mixing up cause and effect. Election lies and other disinformation are now a staple of the Trump wing of the Republican party, and these lies trigger retaliation by the companies hosting the offending accounts. Most of them know this, but “censorship” gives them a bogus cause that helps generate outrage among their followers and juice their own campaign contributions.

Mark Zuckerberg. The Facebook CEO cares about making money above all, and there’s not necessarily anything wrong with that. Zuckerberg wants to outsource the decision about Trump so that he and the company don’t seem to be directly responsible for an outcome likely to anger millions of conservative Facebook users. He may also want to have plausible deniability the next time he testifies before Congress, so that when a Trump lackey such as Rep. Jim Jordan (R., Ohio) tries to pillory Zuckerberg for persecuting Trump, Zuckerberg can say, “it wasn’t me.” It’s not clear Facebook is actually losing money because of the Trump feud, but even if it is, Zuckerberg has miscalculated by failing to account for other damage caused by allowing the Trump debacle to fester.

Democrats. They don’t like Facebook either, but Sen. Elizabeth Warren and other Facebook critics on the left have a different gripe:Facebook abuses user dataand hastoo much powerin the digital advertising market. Facebook has few friends in Congress, but it does have one important thing going for it: The company’s Republican and Democratic critics are so divided that they may never agree on any legislation that reins in the company’s power.

There’s only one way the Facebook-Trump saga can end: A permanent Trump ban. Trump will never stop lying, and any negotiated return to Facebook would only restart the cycle. Around the same time Facebook indefinitely banned Trump, Twitteraxed his account permanently. It didn’t drag out the decision or ask somebody else to decide for it. Twitter (TWTR) is no longer explaining or relitigating its Trump decision, which is where Facebook might be in a year or two. The social-media giant could have permanently banned then-President Donald Trump on Jan. 7, after he used the platform to lie about the 2020 election and praise rioters trying to seize control of the US Capitol the day before. Trump and his supporters would have squealed, but decisive action by Facebook would have left them no choice: Deal with it.Instead, Facebook (FB) suspended Trump’s account “indefinitely,” while asking the company’s “oversight board”—a group of outside policy experts—to recommend a permanent solution. On May 5, the board “upheld” Facebook’s decision to exile Trump, but it alsodinged Facebook for the arbitrary application of vague standards. Instead of handing the company a simple answer, it told Facebook to come up with a permanent solution of its own within six months.Have you ever watched an overwrought parent try to negotiate with a misbehaving five-year-old? Instead of telling the kid to stop being a brat, the parent tries to persuade the child why it’s important to stop being a brat, hoping the child will stop being a brat because he sees the light and learns an important life lesson in the process. You want to shout, “just tell him to stop it!”This is what’s going on with Facebook and its oversight board.
