Fool","summary":"Don't underestimate JD and these two other e-commerce companies.","content":"
Alibaba (NYSE:BABA), China's top e-commerce and cloud company, lost nearly 10% of its value from January to late May, underperforming many industry peers. An antitrust probe in China, tighter auditing standards in the U.S., and the rotation from growth to value stocks all weighed down its stock.
\n
Alibaba's stock might look cheap at 18 times forward earnings, but analysts still expect its earnings to dip 3% this year as it absorbs a record $2.75 billion antitrust fine. It will also need to halt its exclusive deals with big brands, which could soften its defenses against smaller e-commerce marketplaces.
\n
And that's not all. Alibaba could be forced to divest its media assets and share its user data with the government, while its fintech affiliate, Ant Group, will be more tightly regulated as a financial holding company. Alibaba might weather all these headwinds and recover over the long term, but its stock could remain dead money for the foreseeable future.
\n
Instead of betting on Alibaba's potential comeback, investors should consider buying shares of Chinese tech stocks that aren't in regulatory crosshairs. These three e-commerce companies fit the bill: JD.com (NASDAQ:JD), Pinduoduo (NASDAQ:PDD), and Baozun (NASDAQ:BZUN).
\n
\n
1. JD.com
\n
JD.com is China's second-largest e-commerce company after Alibaba. However, it's actually the country's largest direct retailer, since it generates most of its revenue from its first-party marketplace.
\n
Unlike Alibaba, which generates most of its e-commerce revenue from third-party sellers on Taobao and Tmall, JD takes on its own inventories and fulfills orders with its logistics network. This business model is more capital-intensive, but it shields its buyers from fake products.
\n
Alibaba's co-founder, Jack Ma, once said JD's lower-margin business model would end in a \"tragedy,\" but economies of scale gradually kicked in and enabled it to generate consistent profits. JD's logistics arm also balanced out its costs by offering its services to third-party customers.
\n
JD's revenue and adjusted earnings rose 29% and 57%, respectively, in 2020. It ended the first quarter with nearly 500 million annual active consumers, and analysts expect its revenue and earnings to grow another 26% and 13%, respectively, this year.
\n
JD doesn't face as much regulatory heat as Alibaba, it margins are expanding, and the stock trades at just 28 times forward earnings estimates and less than 1 times estimated sales.
\n
2. Pinduoduo
\n
Pinduoduo is the third-largest e-commerce player in China in terms of annual revenue, but in terms of total shoppers, it's actually bigger than JD, with 628 million annual active buyers. Like Alibaba, Pinduoduo generates most of its revenue through listing fees and ads for third-party merchants.
\n
\n
Pinduoduo carved out a niche with its discount marketplace, which encouraged shoppers to team up for group discounts. That strategy, which relied heavily on users sharing links across social networks, caught on across China's lower-tier cities.
\n
Pinduoduo subsequently expanded into China's top-tier cities and partnered with bigger brands to challenge Alibaba and JD. It also gained an early mover's advantage in online agriculture by enabling over 12 million farmers to directly ship their produce to customers.
\n
Pinduoduo's revenue surged 97% in 2020, then soared another 239% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2021. Analysts expect its revenue to grow 92% for the full year. Those estimates are impressive for a stock that trades at about eight times this year's sales.
\n
Pinduoduo is still unprofitable due to its aggressive discounts, subsidies for sellers, and the expansion of its logistics network. However, its adjusted operating and net losses still narrowed year-over-year last quarter, and it could gradually inch toward profitability as it increases its scale.
\n
3. Baozun
\n
Baozun is sometimes called the \"Shopify of China\", but that comparison is misleading. Unlike Shopify, which provides self-serve e-commerce services to smaller businesses, Baozun mainly provides end-to-end e-commerce solutions to large international companies.
\n
It can be difficult for large U.S. companies to build Chinese websites, launch marketing campaigns, and set up e-commerce marketplaces, so Baozun is a \"one-stop shop\" that handles all those needs. It also helps companies integrate their online marketplaces with Tmall, JD, and Pinduoduo, which makes it a well-balanced play on China's booming e-commerce sector.
\n
Baozun's business model is capital-intensive, but it expanded its margins in recent years by pivoting from a \"distribution-based\" model, in which it directly fulfilled orders, to a \"non-distribution\" based model, which allows its clients to directly ship their products to their customers.
\n
Baozun's revenue and adjusted earnings increased 22% and 50%, respectively, in 2020. Ninety-two percent of its GMV (gross merchandise volume) came from its non-distribution-based business. Analysts expect its revenue and adjusted earnings to rise 35% and 5%, respectively, this year.
\n
This oft-overlooked stock trades at just 19 times forward earnings and 1.5 times this year's sales, which might make it an undervalued growth stock if investors fall in love with Chinese tech companies again.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Forget Alibaba, These 3 Chinese Tech Stocks Are Better Buys
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nForget Alibaba, These 3 Chinese Tech Stocks Are Better Buys\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-03 23:32 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Alibaba (NYSE:BABA), China's top e-commerce and cloud company, lost nearly 10% of its value from January to late May, underperforming many industry peers. Alibaba could be forced to divest its media assets and share its user data with the government, while its fintech affiliate, Ant Group, will be more tightly regulated as a financial holding company. Alibaba might weather all these headwinds and recover over the long term, but its stock could remain dead money for the foreseeable future.\nInstead of betting on Alibaba's potential comeback, investors should consider buying shares of Chinese tech stocks that aren't in regulatory crosshairs. These three e-commerce companies fit the bill: JD.com (NASDAQ:JD), Pinduoduo (NASDAQ:PDD), and Baozun (NASDAQ:BZUN).\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. JD.com\nJD.com is China's second-largest e-commerce company after Alibaba. However, it's actually the country's largest direct retailer, since it generates most of its revenue from its first-party marketplace.\nUnlike Alibaba, which generates most of its e-commerce revenue from third-party sellers on Taobao and Tmall, JD takes on its own inventories and fulfills orders with its logistics network. This business model is more capital-intensive, but it shields its buyers from fake products.\nAlibaba's co-founder, Jack Ma, once said JD's lower-margin business model would end in a \"tragedy,\" but economies of scale gradually kicked in and enabled it to generate consistent profits. JD's logistics arm also balanced out its costs by offering its services to third-party customers.\nJD's revenue and adjusted earnings rose 29% and 57%, respectively, in 2020. It ended the first quarter with nearly 500 million annual active consumers, and analysts expect its revenue and earnings to grow another 26% and 13%, respectively, this year.\nJD doesn't face as much regulatory heat as Alibaba, it margins are expanding, and the stock trades at just 28 times forward earnings estimates and less than 1 times estimated sales.\n2. Pinduoduo\nPinduoduo is the third-largest e-commerce player in China in terms of annual revenue, but in terms of total shoppers, it's actually bigger than JD, with 628 million annual active buyers. Like Alibaba, Pinduoduo generates most of its revenue through listing fees and ads for third-party merchants.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nPinduoduo carved out a niche with its discount marketplace, which encouraged shoppers to team up for group discounts. That strategy, which relied heavily on users sharing links across social networks, caught on across China's lower-tier cities.\nPinduoduo subsequently expanded into China's top-tier cities and partnered with bigger brands to challenge Alibaba and JD. It also gained an early mover's advantage in online agriculture by enabling over 12 million farmers to directly ship their produce to customers.\nPinduoduo's revenue surged 97% in 2020, then soared another 239% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2021. Analysts expect its revenue to grow 92% for the full year. Those estimates are impressive for a stock that trades at about eight times this year's sales.\nPinduoduo is still unprofitable due to its aggressive discounts, subsidies for sellers, and the expansion of its logistics network. However, its adjusted operating and net losses still narrowed year-over-year last quarter, and it could gradually inch toward profitability as it increases its scale.\n3. Baozun\nBaozun is sometimes called the \"Shopify of China\", but that comparison is misleading. Unlike Shopify, which provides self-serve e-commerce services to smaller businesses, Baozun mainly provides end-to-end e-commerce solutions to large international companies.\nIt can be difficult for large U.S. companies to build Chinese websites, launch marketing campaigns, and set up e-commerce marketplaces, so Baozun is a \"one-stop shop\" that handles all those needs. It also helps companies integrate their online marketplaces with Tmall, JD, and Pinduoduo, which makes it a well-balanced play on China's booming e-commerce sector.\nBaozun's business model is capital-intensive, but it expanded its margins in recent years by pivoting from a \"distribution-based\" model, in which it directly fulfilled orders, to a \"non-distribution\" based model, which allows its clients to directly ship their products to their customers.\nBaozun's revenue and adjusted earnings increased 22% and 50%, respectively, in 2020. Ninety-two percent of its GMV (gross merchandise volume) came from its non-distribution-based business. Analysts expect its revenue and adjusted earnings to rise 35% and 5%, respectively, this year.\nThis oft-overlooked stock trades at just 19 times forward earnings and 1.5 times this year's sales, which might make it an undervalued growth stock if investors fall in love with Chinese tech companies again.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":238,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9091842648,"gmtCreate":1643845827810,"gmtModify":1676533862057,"author":{"id":"3578570760040163","authorId":"3578570760040163","name":"hmmwvms","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a906b2444a1aca7cd161a6e1ee03687e","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578570760040163","authorIdStr":"3578570760040163"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$PayPal(PYPL)$are we still pals? Apple CFO Luca Maestri told analysts that the company expects June quarter revenue to rise by double digits year-over-year, although it faces some supply shortages due to the worldwide chip shortage.Apple has said in the past months that its business has been boosted by the pandemic as consumers and businesses bought computers to work and entertain themselves while at home. But Apple’s strong results in the quarter suggest that the trend may persist as more economies open up.Or, as Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement: “This quarter reflects both the enduring ways our products have helped our users meet this moment in their own lives, as well as the optimism consumers seem to feel about better days ahead for all of us.”Mac sales were up 70%, and Cook said that the result was “fueled by” the company’s introduction of its Mac laptops that used its own M1 chips for longer battery life, instead of processors sold by Intel. iPad sales were up nearly 79% year-over-year.Neither of those results include iPad Pro or iMac models the company announced in March, which are expected to drive additional demand.“We’re seeing strong first-time buyers on the Mac … it continues to run just south of 50%,” Cook told CNBC’s Josh Lipton. “And, in China, it’s even higher than that … it’s more around two-thirds. And that speaks to people preferring to work on the Mac.”Apple’s iPhone also reported strong results this quarter, quelling fears that the current annual cycle could slow down. Last year, Apple released iPhones with a new exterior design and 5G support, which many investors believed could prompt a major upgrade cycle, which this quarter’s results indicate. In greater China, which includes the mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Apple’s revenue increased over 87% year-over-year to $17.73 billion, although the comparison is to a quarter last year in which China was largely shut down in the early days of the pandemic. Every other geographical category, including the Americas and Europe, were also up on an annual basis.Apple’s high-margin services business, including iCloud, App Store, and subscriptions like Apple Music, also showed 26.7% growth. One metric that Apple uses to show the growth in services is the number of subscriptions it has, which not only include its own subscriptions like Apple One, but also subscriptions through its App Store.“We now have over 660 million paid subscriptions across the services on the platform, and that’s up 40 million from the previous quarter, which is an acceleration from 35 million,” Cook told CNBC.However, Apple’s App Store has been challenged by lawmakers and companies that say it costs too much and has too much power. A closely-watched trial with Fortnite maker Epic Games over App Store policies kicks off next week.“The App Store has been an economic miracle. Last year, the estimates are that there was over a half a trillion dollars of economic activity because of the store. And, so, this has been just an economic gamechanger for not only the United States, but several countries around the world. And, we’re going to go in and tell our story. And we’ll see where it goes. But, we’re confident,” Cook told CNBC.Apple’s gross margin was also unusually elevated for the company. Most quarters, it tends to be in the 38% to 39% range, but in the quarter ending in March, Apple reported 42.5% margins.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":129,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3567052123559984","authorId":"3567052123559984","name":"YiiYii","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bb10d436567743e0e60ba0933900bf20","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3567052123559984","authorIdStr":"3567052123559984"},"content":"Done. Tesla managed aGAAPnet income of $438 million in the first quarter, up from just $16 million one-year prior. It would appear, at least at first glance, that the electric-vehicle (EV) pioneer is on the right track in terms of profitability.
\n
The problem is that these profits aren't really coming from the cars that Tesla sells. The company currently generates hundreds of millions of dollars in pure profit each quarter from the sale of regulatory credits, a side effect of other automakers not making enough zero-emission vehicles to meet regulatory requirements.
\n
Regulatory credit sales totaled $518 million in the first quarter, accounting for all of Tesla's profit and then some. This has been the case in previous quarters, as well. In fact, after backing out regulatory credits from Tesla's net income, the company has been unprofitable for six-straight quarters.
\n
Tesla's bottom line got an additional boost in the first quarter from a gain onthe sale ofBitcointo the tune of $101 million, which showed up as a reduction in costs. The picture doesn't look so rosy when both regulatory credits and Bitcoin gains are excluded:
\n

\n
DATA SOURCE: TESLA. CHART BY AUTHOR.
\n
There's no question that Tesla's growth is impressive, but there's also no question that the core business of making and selling cars is not turning a profit. The question Tesla investors need to ask themselves is: If Tesla isn't profitable now, when there's little to no competition in electric vehicles in the United States, what's going to happen when a deluge of competition fromtraditional automakersarrives?
\n
A ton of competition is coming
\n
Tesla's brand has a cult following, so some people will be buying Tesla vehicles regardless of the other options available. But that's not likely to be the case for most people.
\n
The number of electric vehicles available for purchase in the U.S. is set to explode in the coming years.General Motors(NYSE:GM)is planning to launch 30 EVs globally by 2025, with two-thirds set to be sold in North America. The company is aiming to sell 1 million EVs annually in North America by 2025.
\n
Those models include electric versions of the company's GMC Hummer and Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Tesla has a loyal customer base, but so does GM. Someone who's been a GM truck buyer for years is likely to stick with GM when they decide to switch to an electric vehicle.
\n

\n
\n
Ford(NYSE:F)is also pouring resources into electric vehicles, allocating $29 billion for electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. The company's plans include anelectric version of its F-150 pickup truck, which should hit the production lines by mid-2022. Given GM's and Ford's plans, it will not be easy for Tesla to steal away market share in the lucrative pickup-truck segment.
\n
Other car companies have big plans, as well.Volkswagen(OTC:VWAGY)already sells over 200,000 EVs annually andexpects that number to double this year. Tesla managed aGAAPnet income of $438 million in the first quarter, up from just $16 million one-year prior. It would appear, at least at first glance, that the electric-vehicle (EV) pioneer is on the right track in terms of profitability.\nThe problem is that these profits aren't really coming from the cars that Tesla sells. The company currently generates hundreds of millions of dollars in pure profit each quarter from the sale of regulatory credits, a side effect of other automakers not making enough zero-emission vehicles to meet regulatory requirements.\nRegulatory credit sales totaled $518 million in the first quarter, accounting for all of Tesla's profit and then some. This has been the case in previous quarters, as well. In fact, after backing out regulatory credits from Tesla's net income, the company has been unprofitable for six-straight quarters.\nTesla's bottom line got an additional boost in the first quarter from a gain onthe sale ofBitcointo the tune of $101 million, which showed up as a reduction in costs. The picture doesn't look so rosy when both regulatory credits and Bitcoin gains are excluded:\n\nDATA SOURCE: TESLA. CHART BY AUTHOR.\nThere's no question that Tesla's growth is impressive, but there's also no question that the core business of making and selling cars is not turning a profit. The question Tesla investors need to ask themselves is: If Tesla isn't profitable now, when there's little to no competition in electric vehicles in the United States, what's going to happen when a deluge of competition fromtraditional automakersarrives?\nA ton of competition is coming\nTesla's brand has a cult following, so some people will be buying Tesla vehicles regardless of the other options available. But that's not likely to be the case for most people.\nThe number of electric vehicles available for purchase in the U.S. is set to explode in the coming years.General Motors(NYSE:GM)is planning to launch 30 EVs globally by 2025, with two-thirds set to be sold in North America. The company is aiming to sell 1 million EVs annually in North America by 2025.\nThose models include electric versions of the company's GMC Hummer and Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Tesla has a loyal customer base, but so does GM. Someone who's been a GM truck buyer for years is likely to stick with GM when they decide to switch to an electric vehicle.\n\nIMAGE SOURCE: GM.\nFord(NYSE:F)is also pouring resources into electric vehicles, allocating $29 billion for electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. The company's plans include anelectric version of its F-150 pickup truck, which should hit the production lines by mid-2022. Given GM's and Ford's plans, it will not be easy for Tesla to steal away market share in the lucrative pickup-truck segment.\nOther car companies have big plans, as well.Volkswagen(OTC:VWAGY)already sells over 200,000 EVs annually andexpects that number to double this year. The company is aiming to sell roughly 2 million EVs annually by 2025 and expects to launch 70 EV models by 2030.Toyota(NYSE:TM)willlaunch 15 new electric vehicles by 2025, some of which will be under the new Toyota bZ sub-brand. The list goes on.\nNot only will all these electric vehicles provide consumers with a bevy of options beyond Tesla, but they'll also deprive Tesla of its regulatory-credit income as other automakers churn out an increasing number of EVs.\nNone of this is to say that Tesla can't be successful in a world where it faces more competition. The S&P 500 gained about 0.2% to another record close 4,255.15, boosted by the technology sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 85.85 points, or nearly 0.3%, to 34,393,75.\nInvestors are giving growth and tech stocks another chance as bond yields come down. The 10-year Treasury fell below 1.43% on Friday, a three-month low. Cathie Wood’s Ark Innovation, an ETF that focuses on disruptive technology, returned about 6% last week. The fund rose 1.9% Monday even as the benchmark Treasury yield rose briefly back to 1.5%. Apple and Netflix both jumped more than 2%, while Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook also registered gains.\nBoosting cryptocurrency sentiment, Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Sunday said the company will resume bitcoin transactions once it confirms there is reasonable clean energy usage by miners. Bitcoin recovered back above $40,000 Monday. Tesla, a big holder of bitcoin, climbed nearly 1.3%.\n“The broad market’s modest performance is pretty much in line with historical patterns— specifically, June’s tendency for generally quiet trading,” said Chris Larkin, managing director of trading at E-Trade Financial. “As the market continues to sort through potential moves made by the Fed and looming inflation, we could continue to see this narrative play out in the short-term.”\nThe Fed’s two-day policy meeting will likely dominate investor behavior this week. Although the central bank is not expected to take any action, its forecasts for interest rates, inflation and the economy could move the markets. The Fed could possibly move up its forecast for a rate hike after saying in its last quarterly update that it would keep its benchmark rate near zero through 2023,the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.\nFed Chairman Jerome Powell will speak to the press after the central bank issues its statement Wednesday. Traders will be parsing his comments for any clues as to when the Fed could start to end its aggressive monthly asset purchases, especially given recent hotter-than-expected inflation readings.\nBillionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones said this week’s Fed meeting could be the most important in Powell’s career, and he warned that the chairman could spark a big sell-off in risk assets if he doesn’t do a good job of signaling a taper.\n“If they course correct, if they say, ‘We’ve got incoming data, we’ve accomplished our mission or we’re on the way very rapidly to accomplishing our mission on employment,’ then you’re going to get a taper tantrum,” Tudor Jones said. “You’re going to get a sell-off in fixed income. You’re going to get a correction in stocks.”\nU.S. stocks ended last week with a record closing high for the S&P 500 and the beginning of a rotation back into growth names.\nLast week, the 30-stock Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.8%, but the S&P 500 rose 0.4%, for its third straight positive week. The Nasdaq Composite was the outperformer with a gain of nearly 1.9%, posting its fourth winning week in a row as the tech trade came back into favor.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":173,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":104096274,"gmtCreate":1620344267298,"gmtModify":1704342167844,"author":{"id":"3578570760040163","authorId":"3578570760040163","name":"hmmwvms","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a906b2444a1aca7cd161a6e1ee03687e","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578570760040163","authorIdStr":"3578570760040163"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Square the earnings too! When Mr. Buffett and his estate sell off his remaining shares, it is likely those money managers will hold an even bigger stake in the company, Mr. Cunningham said.“There will be a dawning of significant leadership and structural change, and these holders are preparing for that battle,” Mr. Cunningham said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":235,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3567052123559984","authorId":"3567052123559984","name":"YiiYii","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bb10d436567743e0e60ba0933900bf20","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3567052123559984","authorIdStr":"3567052123559984"},"content":"liked n commented","text":"liked n commented","html":"liked n commented"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9066126291,"gmtCreate":1651880008913,"gmtModify":1676534987841,"author":{"id":"3578570760040163","authorId":"3578570760040163","name":"hmmwvms","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a906b2444a1aca7cd161a6e1ee03687e","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578570760040163","authorIdStr":"3578570760040163"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Royal Caribbean Cruises(RCL)$share share ","listText":"$Royal Caribbean Cruises(RCL)$share share ","text":"$Royal Caribbean Cruises(RCL)$share share","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/8aa0b763a76af4db5e781835fb0035c9","width":"1080","height":"3501"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":1,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9066126291","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":58,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":896951390,"gmtCreate":1628553048810,"gmtModify":1703507898875,"author":{"id":"3578570760040163","authorId":"3578570760040163","name":"hmmwvms","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a906b2444a1aca7cd161a6e1ee03687e","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578570760040163","authorIdStr":"3578570760040163"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Teladoc Health Inc.(TDOC)$Sharing is caring?
