Ride-hailing firm Grab Holdings Inc. has also expressed interest in the trading venue that’s set to be launched this year, she said.</p><p>Companies with net-zero or even net-negative ambitions are quickly realizing that “negotiating <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-on-<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> with their small sustainability teams” to find the best projects “is completely unrealistic and is draining their manpower,” Cho said.</p><p>Microsoft and Google declined to comment, while Amazon.com Inc. didn’t respond to a request for comment.</p><p><b>Grab Support</b></p><p>Singapore-based Grab said the company supports carbon offset programs that reduce emissions and provide economic uplift to communities.</p><p>“Having greater transparency and assurance will help us achieve that promise to our consumers and key stakeholders,” a spokesperson said. “We look forward to more details when CIX is launched.”</p><p>Private companies are coming under increasing pressure to reduce their carbon footprint to support goals under the Paris Agreement, and are looking for ways to cancel greenhouse gas emissions that can’t immediately be slashed. Singapore last week announced a pilot project to encourage more companies to buy certificates for offsets, even as quality control remains a concern globally.</p><p>Climate experts have warned that validating cheap offsets that don’t actually remove carbon dioxide could give companies a way to claim they’re carbon free without undertaking costly work to reduce planet-warming emissions -- resulting in greater pollution overall. Even respected environmental groups like the Nature Conservancy have come under fire for selling offsets that protect forests no longer in danger of being torn down.</p><p>Several private markets have emerged to trade carbon credits, such as the Carbon Trade Exchange in London, though Singapore is among the first to offer trading of carbon offsets backed by a public bourse. Unlike carbon credits, which give the holder the right to emit carbon, carbon offsets are projects -- from forests to solar power -- that counterbalance the use of fossil fuels.</p><p>While not among the world’s biggest carbon emitters, tech companies have a sizable footprint thanks to energy-intensive data centers. As of April, of the 10 largest U.S. companies by market value, only four had announced plans to reduce emissions to net zero by 2050 -- all of them tech firms.</p><p>Google last year said its net carbon footprint over its lifetime was zero, while Microsoft aims to be carbon negative by 2030. Large corporations are mostly worried about the quality and scale of their offsets and projects they back, Cho said.</p><p>Climate Impact X will host an exchange for carbon offsets trading as well as a marketplace of nature conservancy projects such as forests, wetlands or mangroves that companies can support. The new platform is also backed by Singapore investor Temasek Holdings Pte., along with commercial banks Standard Chartered Plc and DBS Group Holdings Ltd.</p><p><b>Verify Projects</b></p><p>Climate Impact X will create a rating system for participants based on existing sustainability gauges such as the Gold Standard and will also use satellites, artificial intelligence and blockchain technology to verify the integrity of projects. The aim is to trade products such as futures and other derivatives on the exchange, said Lee Beng Hong, SGX’s head of fixed income, currencies and commodities.</p><p>The platform will operate at the scale of a startup initially, and is hiring at least 20 people across areas such as tech, operations, legal and sales. Ride-hailing firm Grab Holdings Inc. has also expressed interest in the trading venue that’s set to be launched this year, she said.Companies with net-zero or even net-negative ambitions are quickly realizing that “negotiating one-on-one with their small sustainability teams” to find the best projects “is completely unrealistic and is draining their manpower,” Cho said.Microsoft and Google declined to comment, while Amazon.com Inc. didn’t respond to a request for comment.Grab SupportSingapore-based Grab said the company supports carbon offset programs that reduce emissions and provide economic uplift to communities.“Having greater transparency and assurance will help us achieve that promise to our consumers and key stakeholders,” a spokesperson said. “We look forward to more details when CIX is launched.”Private companies are coming under increasing pressure to reduce their carbon footprint to support goals under the Paris Agreement, and are looking for ways to cancel greenhouse gas emissions that can’t immediately be slashed. Singapore last week announced a pilot project to encourage more companies to buy certificates for offsets, even as quality control remains a concern globally.Climate experts have warned that validating cheap offsets that don’t actually remove carbon dioxide could give companies a way to claim they’re carbon free without undertaking costly work to reduce planet-warming emissions -- resulting in greater pollution overall. Even respected environmental groups like the Nature Conservancy have come under fire for selling offsets that protect forests no longer in danger of being torn down.Several private markets have emerged to trade carbon credits, such as the Carbon Trade Exchange in London, though Singapore is among the first to offer trading of carbon offsets backed by a public bourse. Unlike carbon credits, which give the holder the right to emit carbon, carbon offsets are projects -- from forests to solar power -- that counterbalance the use of fossil fuels.While not among the world’s biggest carbon emitters, tech companies have a sizable footprint thanks to energy-intensive data centers. As of April, of the 10 largest U.S. companies by market value, only four had announced plans to reduce emissions to net zero by 2050 -- all of them tech firms.Google last year said its net carbon footprint over its lifetime was zero, while Microsoft aims to be carbon negative by 2030. Large corporations are mostly worried about the quality and scale of their offsets and projects they back, Cho said.Climate Impact X will host an exchange for carbon offsets trading as well as a marketplace of nature conservancy projects such as forests, wetlands or mangroves that companies can support. With that, Coursera now had a market capitalization of $5.9 billion.</p><p>The rally did continue for a little while longer. On April 7, the stock reached a 52-week high of $62.53.</p><p>However, COUR stock declined after that. At the end of the trading day on May 7, the shares were priced at $36.14. It will open today at about $39.</p><p>Should the stockholders give up hope and should prospective investors stay away?</p><p>Again, we’ll dig deeper and let the data guide us. In doing so, perhaps we can identify reasons to stay the course with Coursera.</p><p><b>Democratizing Education, Profitably</b></p><p>With higher education being so expensive nowadays, I’ve got to give Coursera credit for making college-level learning more accessible to the public.</p><p>As co-founder and Chairman Andrew Ng put it, “We started Coursera to democratize access to high-quality education [with a mission] to transform lives through learning.”</p><p>There are statistics to demonstrate that Coursera is succeeding in this endeavor. Impressively, more than 200 universities and institutions of learning have worked with Coursera.</p><p>And, there’s practically something for everyone who’s interested in adult education. Coursera offers:</p><ul><li>more than 4,600 courses</li><li>over 1,000 “guided projects” to learn job skills in less than two hours</li><li>a variety of professional certification programs</li></ul><p>Is all of this translating into revenues? I’d say the answer is yes, but don’t just take my word for it.</p><p>Instead, take the company’s word for it. According to Coursera, the company had over 77 million registered learners on the platform at the end of 2020.</p><p>Moreover, Coursera claims to have more than 2,000 business customers. If you’re impressed with those figures, it only gets better from here.</p><p><b>Embracing Online Learning</b></p><p>Not long after the company’s IPO, Coursera posted its first-quarter 2021 fiscal results.</p><p>If there was any doubt that the Covid-19 pandemic provided a tailwind for Coursera, the company’s quarterly revenues should put that doubt to rest.</p><p>Specifically, Coursera’sfirst-quarter revenues totaled $88.4 million. That represents a 64% increase on a year-over-year basis.</p><p>We can break this down into segments:</p><ul><li>Consumer revenues of $51.9 million, up 61%</li><li>Enterprise revenues of $24.5 million, up 63%</li><li>Revenues from degree programs totaling $12 million, up 81%</li></ul><p>In case that isn’t enough for you, then note that Coursera added five million net new registered learners during the first quarter. With that, the total stood at 82 million.</p><p>Coursera CEO Jeff Maggioncalda suggested that this growth is part of a much larger phenomenon.</p><p>“Our strong first-quarter performance reflects the continued trend of individuals and institutions embracing online learning to develop skills for a digital future,” Maggioncalda explained.</p><p><b>The Bottom Line on COUR Stock</b></p><p>Worried that the trend towards online learning is coming to a standstill? ETFs are baskets of stocks that typically track an index, although there are many that track customized indexes and some that are even actively managed. But while they are diversified, like mutual funds, they trade on exchanges like stocks.</p>\n<p>Rather than building a diversified portfolio of stocks complete with growth and value names and stocks that balance each other out to outperform through various market cycles, you can accomplish all this through a few ETFs. You can invest in the biggest technology names through an ETF like the <b>Invesco QQQ</b>, which tracks the Nasdaq 100 index, and maybe balance that out with a broad-market ETF like the <b>Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF</b>, which tracks all 3,700-plus stocks on the market, or a large-cap ETF, like the <b>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF</b>.</p>\n<p>Investing in a few different ETFs, as opposed to a bunch of individual stocks that perhaps you haven't fully researched, will give you a diversified portfolio with access to the top-performing stocks as well as returns that, at worst, match the benchmarks. At best, some well-chosen ETFs can even beat the major benchmarks.</p>\n<h2>2. Be patient and don't overreact to market volatility</h2>\n<p>One of the biggest mistakes that the average investor makes is overreacting to market volatility. Invariably, when the market&nbsp; goes down, or suffers a correction, meaning a drop of 10%, many average investors tend to sell to cut their losses. But what they are doing is locking in their losses -- those paper losses only become real losses when you sell. If you hold through the volatility, you'll likely regain those losses and then some.</p>\n<p>Look at last year as a prime example. The market dropped about 33% in a span of about a month, finishing its drop on March 16. If you sold stocks on March 16 when the S&amp;P 500 plunged to around 2,300, you locked in that 33% loss. But if you held on, well, the S&amp;P 500 is now over 4,200 in a little over a year -- so you do the math.</p>\n<p>Conversely, it is also just as important not to chase returns. Many investors see a stock surge and buy in to ride the wave, but what they are often doing is buying high. They likely missed out on the catalyst that caused the surge, and now have a stock that has plateaued or will drop. That then leads to the vicious circle of getting frustrated and dumping at the drop -- in effect buying high and selling low. Been there, done that.</p>\n<h2>3. Think long-term and have a goal</h2>\n<p>Another mistake the average investor makes is trying to time the market, meaning buying low and selling high. This strategy rarely works for the average investor. If you are investing in stocks for short-term profit, you are missing the big picture.</p>\n<p>Whether you are investing in a portfolio of individual stocks or ETFs, you should go in with a mindset that you are in it for the long term to ride out the market volatility. If you set goals for your investments, the long-term focus is built in. If you are investing for college costs 15 years down the road, then stick to that plan. If you are investing for retirement in 25 years, then invest with that in mind.</p>\n<p>Your best opportunity to build wealth is to invest in good companies over the long haul, taking advantage of not only solid annual returns, but compounding dividend reinvestment and ongoing contributions to make your money work for you. Remember, a stock or ETF that even just tracks the benchmark is going to beat the average investor over time.</p>\n<p>Note that these simple ideas are just a start. As you grow in your investing journey, you can dive deeper into the concepts and strategies to become an even better investor. Chairman Osamu Nagayama will seek to convince shareholders Friday he deserves another chance to try and overhaul the 145-year-old nuclear energy to electronics conglomerate.</p>\n<p>The 74-year-old is trying to win enough investor votes to stay at the helm of the crisis-stricken Japanese icon, which is under fire from corporate governance experts after an independent investigation uncovered alleged collusion with top government officials to influence last year’s board selection. On Friday, shareholders meet in Tokyo to vote on his and several other directors’ re-appointment, and analysts expect Nagayama to squeeze through by a narrow margin.</p>\n<p>The report was a rare public account of how Japan’s bureaucrats allegedly coordinated with a private company to exert control over foreign shareholders, and intensified the controversy surrounding a manufacturer roiled by accounting scandals, business missteps and the departure of its chief executive officer. Effissimo Capital Management Pte., Toshiba’s largest shareholder, said the report shows the Japanese company has “dysfunctional” corporate governance and an “ineffective” board of directors.</p>\n<p>“As the chairperson my priority is to provide Toshiba with the governance and leadership that you deserve,” Nagayama said in a letter to shareholders last week. “I pledge to you that I will continue to be an agent of positive change, not a protector of the status quo.”</p>\n<p>Toshiba doesn’t disclose how shareholders have exercised their votes ahead of the meeting, a company representative said.</p>\n<p>Once a storied name in Japan, Toshiba has faded dramatically since its glory days after years of management missteps. It paid a record fine in an accounting scandal and then lost billions on a bungled foray into nuclear power. The conglomerate invented flash memory three decades ago, but was forced to sell most of its prized chip business in 2018 because of losses in its nuclear-power operation. That deal led to an infusion of cash -- but also a large contingent of more vocal shareholders.</p>\n<p>Nagayama has vowed to bring in new board members to improve corporate governance, and Toshiba said this month it’s dropping two existing directors. Chairman Osamu Nagayama will seek to convince shareholders Friday he deserves another chance to try and overhaul the 145-year-old nuclear energy to electronics conglomerate.\nThe 74-year-old is trying to win enough investor votes to stay at the helm of the crisis-stricken Japanese icon, which is under fire from corporate governance experts after an independent investigation uncovered alleged collusion with top government officials to influence last year’s board selection. On Friday, shareholders meet in Tokyo to vote on his and several other directors’ re-appointment, and analysts expect Nagayama to squeeze through by a narrow margin.\nThe report was a rare public account of how Japan’s bureaucrats allegedly coordinated with a private company to exert control over foreign shareholders, and intensified the controversy surrounding a manufacturer roiled by accounting scandals, business missteps and the departure of its chief executive officer. Effissimo Capital Management Pte., Toshiba’s largest shareholder, said the report shows the Japanese company has “dysfunctional” corporate governance and an “ineffective” board of directors.\n“As the chairperson my priority is to provide Toshiba with the governance and leadership that you deserve,” Nagayama said in a letter to shareholders last week. “I pledge to you that I will continue to be an agent of positive change, not a protector of the status quo.”\nToshiba doesn’t disclose how shareholders have exercised their votes ahead of the meeting, a company representative said.\nOnce a storied name in Japan, Toshiba has faded dramatically since its glory days after years of management missteps. It paid a record fine in an accounting scandal and then lost billions on a bungled foray into nuclear power. The conglomerate invented flash memory three decades ago, but was forced to sell most of its prized chip business in 2018 because of losses in its nuclear-power operation. That deal led to an infusion of cash -- but also a large contingent of more vocal shareholders.\nNagayama has vowed to bring in new board members to improve corporate governance, and Toshiba said this month it’s dropping two existing directors. Yet the chairman argued in his letter that the company needs a rapid rebuild rather than a reformation of the board.\nOutside lawyers appointed by Effissimo reported that Toshiba had teamed up with the Japanese government to repel activists and press shareholders not to act against management. The report mainly criticized former CEO Nobuaki Kurumatani, but stakeholders have also cast doubt on whether Nagayama fulfilled his duty as the chairman.\nNorway’s sovereign wealth fund, State Board of Administration of Florida and Calvert Research and Management are among shareholders who’ve disclosed they’re voting against Nagayama’s re-election. Toshiba’s management is “outdated” and its corporate governance needs improvement, said Chieko Matsuda, a professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University.\n“If he ends up approved, that would only be investors judging it’s not the best to hunt them all down at once,” said Shin Ushijima, president of Japan Corporate Governance Network. “Foreign investors are skeptical that he may not have done what he should have done.”\nBut shareholders including California State Teachers’ Retirement System have indicated they are voting for Nagayama’s re-election. The lockdown that will remain in effect until mid June has raised concerns over the full-year growth target.\"Since February, the external economic environment has improved, even though the pandemic continues to disrupt activities in many economies and threatens to undermine any recovery,\" it said.\"While the recent tightening of domestic restrictions and border controls represents a setback to segments of the economy, the broader economy should still see a recovery this year in tandem with the global economic rebound and further progress in the domestic vaccination programme.\"The performance of the economy in the first quarter of 2021 was stronger than expected.The final estimate for first-quarter growth came at 1.3 per cent on a yearly basis, compared to an earlier estimate of 0.2 per cent and the 2.4 per cent contraction in the previous quarter.The January-March growth was even higher than the 0.9 per cent growth projected by economists in a Reuters poll.On a quarter-on-quarter seasonally-adjusted basis, the economy grew by 3.1 per cent, extending the 3.8 per cent expansion in the fourth quarter of last year.The first quarter growth came on the back of the manufacturing sector's 10.7 per cent year-on-year expansion, faster than the 10.3 per cent growth recorded in the previous quarter.MTI said the Jan-March growth was due to output expansions in the electronics, precision engineering and chemicals clusters, which outweighed output declines in transport engineering, general manufacturing and biomedical manufacturing.The wholesale trade sector expanded by 3.5 per cent year-on-year, faster than the 1.8 per cent growth registered in the previous quarter, and the retail trade sector grew by 1.4 per cent.Growth of the information & communications sector accelerated to 6.4 per cent year-on-year, from the 2.6 per cent achieved in the previous quarter.However, the construction sector contracted by 22.7 per cent and the transportation and storage sector shrank by 16.5 per cent, compared with the same period last year. Moreover, the company is gradually bringing moviegoers back to cinemas in Europe.</p>\n<p>On the other hand, AMC CEOAdam Aron has admitted that the company&nbsp; nearly filed for bankruptcy five times during the Covid-19 pandemic.</p>\n<p>As the old expression goes, we’re not out of the woods yet. The recovery process from a once-in-a-generation black-swan event won’t be easy. And that leads us to another old expression: let the buyer beware.</p>\n<p><b>A Closer Look at AMC Stock</b></p>\n<p>AMC Entertainment reported its first-quarter fiscal data on May 6, and we’ll certainly dive into the details of that.</p>\n<p>First, though, I’d like to put a microscope to the market’s reaction to the earnings report.</p>\n<p>The following trading day, AMC stock jumped 5.67%, closing at $9.51. That’s a pretty clear signal from the market that it felt good about the company’s financial results.</p>\n<p>At the same time, investors should know that the company’s trailing 12-month earnings per share is -$15.60. That’s not great, especially for a stock trading today around $10..</p>\n<p>With that in mind, let’s rewind a bit. Back in mid-January, AMC stock was trading at around $2.</p>\n<p>Then the Reddit crowd pounced on it, and the share price quickly rocketed to a 52-week high of $20.36.</p>\n<p>Sensible minds advised caution at that time, but their warnings often fell upon deaf ears. By mid-February, the stock price had declined to $5 and change.</p>\n<p>Since that time, AMC stock has wiggled and wobbled in both directions. Clearly, this isn’t a stock that anyone should pour his or her life savings into. Small position sizes should be the rule, not the exception.</p>\n<p><b>Sorry, Not a Winner</b></p>\n<p>If you only look at the market’s reaction to AMC’s first-quarter data release, you might assume that it was a winning quarter in terms of earnings.</p>\n<p>However, that’s not the case. As it turns out, AMC reported a first-quarter loss of $567.2 million, which translates to $1.42 a share. Analysts, on average, were expecting the company to lose $1.31 per share.</p>\n<p>So, that was a “miss” for AMC. The quarterly revenues were also a “miss” as the company reported $148.3 million, versus the analysts’ average forecast of $156.3 million in revenues.</p>\n<p>To use percentages instead of dollar amounts, AMC’s first-quarter revenuesfell by a whopping 84.3%on a year-over-year basis. Furthermore, the company sustained an 88.8% decline in attendance due to the Covid-19 pandemic.</p>\n<p><b>Quoting Churchill?</b></p>\n<p>Under normal circumstances, the foregoing stats should induce a share-price decline. But then, we’d be hard-pressed to find evidence that these are “normal” circumstances.</p>\n<p>Possibly, the market reacted positively to Aron’s statement during the conference call that “our market share in the United States has soared, increasing by about 25% compared to prepandemic levels.”</p>\n<p>That’s impressive, but for me, the revenues are the top line and the earnings are the bottom line.</p>\n<p>It’s fine to see butts in seats, but an investor should want to see dollars in hand. Again, recall the -$15.60 per share trailing 12-month earnings I cited earlier.</p>\n<p>I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t too pleased with the CEO quoting Winston Churchill during the conference call:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “‘This is not the end. It not even the beginning of the end. But it is perhaps the end of the beginning.’… “Sir Winston won his titanic fight. I believe that AMC will win our war too.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>I won’t dare say that Aron is arrogant, or that he’s starting to lose his mind. Moreover, the company is gradually bringing moviegoers back to cinemas in Europe.\nOn the other hand, AMC CEOAdam Aron has admitted that the company  nearly filed for bankruptcy five times during the Covid-19 pandemic.\nAs the old expression goes, we’re not out of the woods yet. The recovery process from a once-in-a-generation black-swan event won’t be easy. And that leads us to another old expression: let the buyer beware.\nA Closer Look at AMC Stock\nAMC Entertainment reported its first-quarter fiscal data on May 6, and we’ll certainly dive into the details of that.\nFirst, though, I’d like to put a microscope to the market’s reaction to the earnings report.\nThe following trading day, AMC stock jumped 5.67%, closing at $9.51. That’s a pretty clear signal from the market that it felt good about the company’s financial results.\nAt the same time, investors should know that the company’s trailing 12-month earnings per share is -$15.60. That’s not great, especially for a stock trading today around $10..\nWith that in mind, let’s rewind a bit. Back in mid-January, AMC stock was trading at around $2.\nThen the Reddit crowd pounced on it, and the share price quickly rocketed to a 52-week high of $20.36.\nSensible minds advised caution at that time, but their warnings often fell upon deaf ears. By mid-February, the stock price had declined to $5 and change.\nSince that time, AMC stock has wiggled and wobbled in both directions. Clearly, this isn’t a stock that anyone should pour his or her life savings into. Small position sizes should be the rule, not the exception.\nSorry, Not a Winner\nIf you only look at the market’s reaction to AMC’s first-quarter data release, you might assume that it was a winning quarter in terms of earnings.\nHowever, that’s not the case. As it turns out, AMC reported a first-quarter loss of $567.2 million, which translates to $1.42 a share. Analysts, on average, were expecting the company to lose $1.31 per share.\nSo, that was a “miss” for AMC. The quarterly revenues were also a “miss” as the company reported $148.3 million, versus the analysts’ average forecast of $156.3 million in revenues.\nTo use percentages instead of dollar amounts, AMC’s first-quarter revenuesfell by a whopping 84.3%on a year-over-year basis. Furthermore, the company sustained an 88.8% decline in attendance due to the Covid-19 pandemic.\nQuoting Churchill?\nUnder normal circumstances, the foregoing stats should induce a share-price decline. But then, we’d be hard-pressed to find evidence that these are “normal” circumstances.\nPossibly, the market reacted positively to Aron’s statement during the conference call that “our market share in the United States has soared, increasing by about 25% compared to prepandemic levels.”\nThat’s impressive, but for me, the revenues are the top line and the earnings are the bottom line.\nIt’s fine to see butts in seats, but an investor should want to see dollars in hand. Again, recall the -$15.60 per share trailing 12-month earnings I cited earlier.\nI don’t know about you, but I wasn’t too pleased with the CEO quoting Winston Churchill during the conference call:\n\n “‘This is not the end. It not even the beginning of the end. But it is perhaps the end of the beginning.’… “Sir Winston won his titanic fight. I believe that AMC will win our war too.”\n\nI won’t dare say that Aron is arrogant, or that he’s starting to lose his mind.
