The stock nosedived after the company released its latest quarterly results on Feb. 1. Gilead&#39;s performance for the past three months of 2021 was underwhelming with the company&#39;s sales of $7.2 billion declining 2.4% from the same period a year ago. Net income of $376 million was also just a fraction of the $1.5 billion that it reported a year earlier; the healthcare company says the decline was largely due to a legal settlement of $625 million involving <b>Arcus Biosciences</b>.</p><p>For 2022, Gilead projects that its sales will come in between $23.8 billion and $24.3 billion; at the midpoint of $24 billion, that would be a decline of 12% from the $27.3 billion it recorded in 2021. The company expects diluted earnings per share (EPS) to be between $4.70 and $5.20 for the year, so it could still potentially come in better than the $4.93-per-share profit it reported this past year.</p><p>Even if there is a decline in profitability, those numbers will still be strong enough to support the company&#39;s dividend, which currently pays shareholders $2.92 per share a year. At the low point of its EPS estimate, Gilead&#39;s payout ratio would still be fairly modest at 62%; that would leave plenty of room for the company not only to support but also to grow its already high dividend, which currently yields 4.6%.</p><p>Although Gilead is facing some challenges, particularly from losses in exclusivity for some of its key products, the company is working on building out its pipeline. In oncology alone, there are over 30 clinical trials currently taking place.</p><p>Gilead remains in solid shape despite some risks, and investors are compensated for it as the stock trades at a lower forward price-to-earnings multiple than other drugmakers:</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/31d1231300ed8387737ca89664e91e9e\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"387\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>GILD PE Ratio (Forward) data by YCharts.</span></p><h2>2. 3M</h2><p>Multinational conglomerate 3M hit a new 52-week low this week as it also fell out of favor with investors. The company, which makes healthcare masks and respirators, was a popular investment during the pandemic&#39;s early stages. And as COVID-19 case numbers began to subside last year and hopes about a return to normal rose, interest in the stock began to wane.</p><p>The company released fourth-quarter numbers on Jan. 25, reporting sales of $8.6 billion for the period ended Dec. 31, 2021. That was flat from the prior year. Meanwhile, net income declined by 4.7% to $1.3 billion. By contrast, sales rose 5.8% in 2020&#39;s fourth quarter. That was largely due to an increase in safety and industrial revenue (including personal hygiene products and masks). This time around, however, that segment of its business fell 2% to about $3.1 billion.</p><p>Other business units (healthcare, transportation and electronics) are smaller and also showed little or no growth. The lone exception and growth catalyst in Q4 was its consumer business (e.g. bandages, cleaning, and stationery products) which rose by 4% and helped keep the quarter&#39;s sales just slightly above the prior-year numbers. All this diversification makes the business resilient -- and as a whole, 3M continues to do well. For all of 2021, net sales rose 10% year over year to $35.4 billion.</p><p>For income investors, the company&#39;s payouts look more than safe even if the growth rate starts to falter. 3M is a Dividend King thanks to increasing its dividend payments for more than 60 years in a row. And there&#39;s little doubt that streak will continue; it paid out $5.92 per share in dividends for 2021. With an EPS of $10.12, that puts its payout ratio at just 58%. Most of this decline, of course, was caused by the company&#39;s disappointing third-quarter update and management&#39;s dismal guidance for Q1.</p><p>The question on many investors&#39; minds is whether this pullback in the tech-stock price represents a buying opportunity. At least one analyst thinks this is not just a buying opportunity -- but a <i>compelling</i> one. On Wednesday, Tigress Financial analyst Ivan Feinseth called the stock a &#34;strong buy,&#34; reiterating a $466 12-month price target.</p><p>Given where Meta Platforms stock is trading as of this writing, this represents just over 100% upside for shares. Is this analyst onto something?</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c1a3029769a20941e96ddc71b5548019\" tg-width=\"2000\" tg-height=\"1333\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.</span></p><p><b>Meta Platforms has a history of conservative guidance</b></p><p>The main thing that spooked investors when Meta Platforms reported its fourth-quarter results was CFO David Wehner&#39;s guidance for revenue to grow just 3%-11% year over year in Q1. This would mark a big slowdown from the company&#39;s 20% revenue growth in Q4. Further, management said in Meta Platforms&#39; fourth-quarter earnings call that it&#39;s a &#34;multiyear development journey&#34; for the company to rebuild its advertising measurement and targeting systems to fully address new challenges presented on these fronts by <b>Apple</b>&#39;s recent iOS updates.</p><p>But investors should note that Wehner has a long history of being overly conservative. Consider Wehner&#39;s repeated calls in 2017 for advertising-revenue growth to &#34;come down meaningfully&#34; in the second half of the year, relative to the 50% growth levels it was averaging previously. Yet revenue increased 49% year over year in both the third and fourth quarter of 2017. This compared to 51% and 47% respective growth in advertising revenue in the first and second quarters of 2017.</p><p>While past results are certainly no indication of future results, it&#39;s a fair statement to say that Meta&#39;s guidance typically errs on the side of conservatism.</p><p>The fact that Meta may be guiding conservatively is one reason Feinseth is likely reiterating a buy rating for the stock after its post-earnings crash. The Street&#39;s sell-off of an already attractively valued stock may have just created an outstanding buying opportunity for investors willing to see through to the other side of this storm.</p><p><b>A compelling valuation</b></p><p>Today, Meta has a price-to-earnings ratio of just 17. For a company as profitable as Facebook and with a bigger network effect than any other social network in the world, this valuation is compelling. A buying opportunity in a market leader like this may not last.</p><p>Sure, investors should keep an eye on how growth fares in the coming quarters. If revenue in Q1 really does grow 11% or less year over year, and if quarterly guidance is bleak once again, this may be cause for concern. Since 2016, when Apple introduced the SE concept, new versions have been announced around March or April.</p><p>The iPhone business is, by far, the most important piece in Apple’s total revenues. It accounted for 52% of the company’s sales in fiscal 2021 (see below). Better yet, iPhone revenues grew at an outstanding clip of 34% in the past four quarters, the most of any segment.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3a51a6ef50b086841692c1e0bc1ff07b\" tg-width=\"776\" tg-height=\"473\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Figure 2: Fiscal 2021 revenue by segment.</span></p><p>Judging by the recent earnings call conversations, much of the success can be credited to the higher-end models. The iPhone 13 was launched in September 2021, and the early part of this new upgrade cycle has proven to be robust.</p><p>The new iPhone SE can probably help to boost sales among the more price-sensitive consumers, particularly in emerging markets. This would be good for demand diversification — think of mid-2020,when the SE saved the quarter for the iPhone segment. The fact that the new model should be 5G-ready might make the device even more appealing.</p><p>The iPad Air, in my view, is less likely to be a game changer. Yes, the tablet segment has been struggling lately: it was the only to post a YOY decline in revenues in fiscal Q1 — see chart below. The new device could help by introducing newness to the business.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/53c583990a239c6e127788724fe05af5\" tg-width=\"669\" tg-height=\"471\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Figure 3: FQ1 2022 revenue growth by major segment.</span></p><p>But then, the iPad is much less important for Apple’s total revenues, having accounted for only 9% of sales in fiscal 2021. Also, much of the recent decline in units shipped has been associated with component shortages, not lack of demand<i>per se</i>.</p><p>So, refreshing the iPad lineup will be important to the extent that the current version is already 15 months old. Maybe the new model will be equipped with the M1 chip, as is the case of the current Pro device. But to revenues and earnings, I don’t expect much of an impact here.</p><p><b>So, buy AAPL now?</b></p><p>In my view, buying Apple stock now solely in anticipation of the new iPhone SE and iPad Air does not make too much sense.</p><p>From a product launch perspective, I believe that only the next iPhone 14, in addition to brand-new product categories (think Apple Glass and Apple Car), can be enough of a game changer for the Cupertino company and its stock. Almost everything else is only likely to be accretive to the ecosystem.</p><p>In deciding whether buy AAPL, I think that other, more important factors should be considered. This lackluster market performance prompted us to initiate coverage of Palantir to determine whether Mr. Market is missing something.</p><p>Palantir’s complex business structure together with the stock price action as a meme stock attracted the attention of many retail investors in its early days as a public company. While the company has been portraying impressive revenue growth as well as introducing many initiatives to promote future growth, we believe a few negative developments are overshadowing the fundamentals and the potential of the company.</p><p>On that note, we believe now is a good time to invest in Palantir stock, and our investment thesis is based on three reasons.</p><ol><li>High-value public and private sector opportunities.</li><li>The changing shareholder composition.</li><li>The attractive price point to initiate an investment in the company.</li></ol><p>We will briefly discuss these three reasons below.</p><p><b>The opportunity</b></p><p>The first reason is the opportunity that prevails in the current market for the services provided by the company. Palantir’s software integrates organizations’ data from diverse sources and allows users to run analytics, identify trends, and make informed decisions using Artificial Intelligence. The two main platforms used by Palantir are Foundry and Gotham. Gotham is mostly used for government applications, whereas Foundry is for the private sector that allows businesses to interpret information feeds. The global big data market is expected to grow from $138.9 billion in 2020 to $229.4 billion by 2025, at a compounded annual growth rate of 10.6%. The major growth factors of the big data market include the increasing awareness of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices among organizations, increasing availability of data across organizations to gain deeper insights to remain competitive, and increasing government investments in various regions for enhancing digital technologies. Gartner, in its worldwide government IT spending report released in February 2021, highlighted that spending will reach $483 billion in 2021, an increase of 5.1% from 2020. The strong revenue growth portrayed by the company in the recent past did not receive due recognition in the market, in our opinion. The third quarter of 2021 is widely seen as a disappointing quarter for Palantir despite the company reporting year-over-year revenue growth of 35.5%, and this is mainly because of the decelerating growth of the government sector revenue. Palantir reported 34% YoY growth in the governmental segment revenue compared to 66% in the previous quarter, and this deceleration of growth did not impress the market. The commercial segment, excluding related party revenue, grew 23% YoY, and we believe this segment holds the key to the expected success of the company. Even though Q3 2021 revenue growth decelerated, Palantir continues to grow its topline every quarter, and given the favorable industry outlook as well as market opportunities, we believe the management guidance for 30%+ annual growth through 2025 is easily attainable. After looking at the recent price action in the market, we conclude that the market has always been pricing in higher revenue growth for Palantir in each of the last few quarters, and the otherwise impressive financial performance was overshadowed by these unrealistic growth expectations. Now that the hype is finally fading, we believe Palantir will attract the attention of investors who are in it for the long run, which in return could lead to reduced volatility in the stock while creating a platform for Palantir stock to drive on improving fundamentals.</p><p><b>Exhibit 3: Palantir institutional ownership</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a55021b056f006a1f192ff8fda5f8404\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"327\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Source: Fintel</span></p><p>Third, the improving margin of safety resulting from the comparatively cheaper valuation. Although the company is making losses, the business is generating positive free cash flow with $320 million in FCF reported for the first three quarters of 2021, a massive year-over-year improvement from a loss of $285 million in the prior-year period. Palantir is currently trading at a P/S multiple of close to 17, which certainly does not make it the most cheaply valued tech company today, but in comparison to Snowflake, Inc. (SNOW) which is valued at a P/S multiple of more than 80, we believe Palantir’s expected growth justifies the current valuation. In any case, the company is more cheaply valued than it used to be just a few months ago – yes, it can get cheaper – and we strongly believe tech companies with competitive advantages will continue to be valued at better-than-average valuation multiples in the long run.</p><p><b>Two risks to monitor</b></p><p>The main red flag we see in Palantir is its excessive stock-based compensation. For a company that has been making losses every quarter and is only reporting profits on an adjusted basis, we feel the company is making life difficult for itself with this compensation structure as it negatively impacts the numbers reported by the company.</p><p>Second, we are keeping an eye on Palantir’s concentrated customer base. Already, the intense sensitivity of Palantir’s projects has resulted in investors being unable to forecast and assess the performance of Palantir’s software and its future operational performance. Palantir has only 203 customers in total, of which the top 20 customers account for over 50% of its revenue. This concentrated customer base makes it difficult to project future revenue and also poses a threat to the continued success of the company. Palantir, however, is adding new customers every quarter, and we will monitor these numbers closely to assess whether the company is on the right track to building a diversified pool of customers.</p><p><b>Takeaway</b></p><p>The road to recovery for Palantir is going to be a bumpy ride and investors will have to accept some volatility in the short run. The index is, by far, the best performer in 2022, up 23.2%, as U.S. crude hovers near a seven-year high.</p><p>Those strong energy prices helped Exxon Mobil Corp to post its biggest quarterly profit in seven years on Tuesday. Its stock jumped 6.4% as a result, to close above the $80-per-share mark for the first time since April 2019.</p><p>As of Tuesday, 184 S&amp;P 500 companies posted quarterly results, of which 78.8% reported earnings above analyst expectations, according to Refinitiv.</p><p>Google parent Alphabet Inc rose 1.7% ahead of quarterly results published after the bell. Amazon Inc and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Meta Platforms</a> Inc are also on deck later this week.</p><p>Of those which reported earlier on Tuesday, United Parcel Service Inc jumped 14.1% - its biggest <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>-day gain in 18 months - after projecting 2022 revenue above market expectations.</p><p>AT&amp;T Inc dropped 4.2% after saying it will spin off WarnerMedia in a $43 billion transaction to merge its media properties with Discovery Inc and also cut its dividend by nearly half.</p><p>Volume on U.S. exchanges was 11.71 billion shares, compared with the 12.45 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.</p><p>The S&amp;P 500 posted 18 new 52-week highs and one new low; This would mark a big slowdown from the company&#39;s 20% revenue growth in Q4. Further, management said in Meta Platforms&#39; fourth-quarter earnings call that it&#39;s a &#34;multiyear development journey&#34; for the company to rebuild its advertising measurement and targeting systems to fully address new challenges presented on these fronts by <b>Apple</b>&#39;s recent iOS updates.</p><p>But investors should note that Wehner has a long history of being overly conservative. Consider Wehner&#39;s repeated calls in 2017 for advertising-revenue growth to &#34;come down meaningfully&#34; in the second half of the year, relative to the 50% growth levels it was averaging previously. Yet revenue increased 49% year over year in both the third and fourth quarter of 2017. This compared to 51% and 47% respective growth in advertising revenue in the first and second quarters of 2017.</p><p>While past results are certainly no indication of future results, it&#39;s a fair statement to say that Meta&#39;s guidance typically errs on the side of conservatism.</p><p>The fact that Meta may be guiding conservatively is one reason Feinseth is likely reiterating a buy rating for the stock after its post-earnings crash. For a company as profitable as Facebook and with a bigger network effect than any other social network in the world, this valuation is compelling. If revenue in Q1 really does grow 11% or less year over year, and if quarterly guidance is bleak once again, this may be cause for concern. It accounted for 52% of the company’s sales in fiscal 2021 (see below). Better yet, iPhone revenues grew at an outstanding clip of 34% in the past four quarters, the most of any segment.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3a51a6ef50b086841692c1e0bc1ff07b\" tg-width=\"776\" tg-height=\"473\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Figure 2: Fiscal 2021 revenue by segment.</span></p><p>Judging by the recent earnings call conversations, much of the success can be credited to the higher-end models. The iPhone 13 was launched in September 2021, and the early part of this new upgrade cycle has proven to be robust.</p><p>The new iPhone SE can probably help to boost sales among the more price-sensitive consumers, particularly in emerging markets. This would be good for demand diversification — think of mid-2020,when the SE saved the quarter for the iPhone segment. The fact that the new model should be 5G-ready might make the device even more appealing.</p><p>The iPad Air, in my view, is less likely to be a game changer. Yes, the tablet segment has been struggling lately: it was the only to post a YOY decline in revenues in fiscal Q1 — see chart below. The new device could help by introducing newness to the business.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/53c583990a239c6e127788724fe05af5\" tg-width=\"669\" tg-height=\"471\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Figure 3: FQ1 2022 revenue growth by major segment.</span></p><p>But then, the iPad is much less important for Apple’s total revenues, having accounted for only 9% of sales in fiscal 2021. Also, much of the recent decline in units shipped has been associated with component shortages, not lack of demand<i>per se</i>.</p><p>So, refreshing the iPad lineup will be important to the extent that the current version is already 15 months old. Maybe the new model will be equipped with the M1 chip, as is the case of the current Pro device. But to revenues and earnings, I don’t expect much of an impact here.</p><p><b>So, buy AAPL now?</b></p><p>In my view, buying Apple stock now solely in anticipation of the new iPhone SE and iPad Air does not make too much sense.</p><p>From a product launch perspective, I believe that only the next iPhone 14, in addition to brand-new product categories (think Apple Glass and Apple Car), can be enough of a game changer for the Cupertino company and its stock. Almost everything else is only likely to be accretive to the ecosystem.</p><p>In deciding whether buy AAPL, I think that other, more important factors should be considered. The consensus estimate stood at $4.1 billion.Whereas the Street was projecting an adjusted EBITDA loss of $463 million, Peloton anticipates a wider loss of $625 million to $675 million, compared to a loss of $425-475 million beforehand.As for FQ2’s display, revenue increased from $1.06 billion to $1.13 billion, a year-over-year uptick of 6.6% and roughly in-line with the Street’s call of $1.14 billion. On the bottom-line, the company posted a loss of $1.39 a share, worse off than Wall Street’s $1.20 loss per share forecast.Beyond the headline numbers, the troubled home exercise specialist also dropped some big news.To deal with the growing losses and lackluster demand, the company said it will reduce around 20% of the workforce, amounting to 2,800 jobs. Peloton sees its cost-cutting plan resulting in annual savings of at least $800 million.Additionally, it announced some big changes in the C-Suite, including the transition of Co-founder and CEO John Foley to Executive Chair. Barry McCarthy, a former Netflix and Spotify CFO, will take his position.All Peloton conversations recently have revolved around the prospect of a takeover, but Baird analyst Jonathan Komp thinks this latest action could meaningfully improve the company’s standing.“While today’s announcement in our view lowers the probability of a strategic takeover (we had assumed <25% probability), we initially view today’s announced organizational changes as the right moves for the long-term health of the organization as a stand-alone company,” the 5-star analyst said. “We are impressed and encouraged to see John Foley and the board add a highly experienced technology/media operator/investor in new CEO Barry McCarthy, and to commit to a sizable restructuring that we believe is needed.”Accordingly, Komp rates PTON shares an Outperform (i.e. Buy) along with a $40 price target.The Street’s average target is just a touch above Komp’s objective; at $42.17, the figure suggests the stock will appreciate ~11% over the coming months.
