the company's Robotaxi event, dubbed "We, Robot," next Thursday. Underwhelming delivery numbers, the departure of the company's CIO, and what is shaping up to be a vaporware Robotaxi exhibition, all have TSLA moving in the wrong direction, and I think this will continue as the hype honeymoon fades. I am downgrading the stock from a Hold to a Sell.

Data by YCharts

When It Rains, It Pours

During a week where some investors expected a run-up leading up to Tesla's Robotaxi event on 10/10, it has been nothing but bad news for the company and for shareholders. First, Tesla announced Q3 vehicle deliveries on Tuesday, which came in below consensus estimates despite aggressive incentives. The company delivered 462,890 total vehicles vs estimates of 463,897, including delivering slightly more Model 3/Y than expected and fewer of all other vehicles than expected. This comes even after Tesla has offered low-interest financing, favorable lease deals, and China has significantly boosted subsidies for purchasing electric vehicles.

For the company to still miss deliveries despite a multitude of tailwinds indicates to me that competition in China is heating up with the likes of BYD and/or demand for Tesla vehicles is generally slowing. Further, if you consider all of the incentives the company has been offering and the higher mix of lower-margin Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in the deliveries, we can expect that gross margins have also taken a hit, which would continue a worrying trend in recent quarters:

Data by YCharts

With gross margin falling off precipitously, it appears that competition has finally come for Tesla's margins. Worse still, even as the company ramps up incentives for buyers, sales have remained stagnant, with quarterly revenue growth nearly flat YoY:

Data by YCharts

It's apparent that operating results are under major stress right now. Tesla is determined to keep deliveries afloat, even as the well of willing buyers worldwide appears to be drying up.

It's important to keep in perspective: Ford (F) sold 23,509 EVs in Q3 and General Motors (GM) sold 32,100, so Tesla still has a massive lead in terms of actual vehicle deliveries. On the other hand, TSLA has a market cap of more than 8x GM and F combined, so expectations are undoubtedly higher. After touting China as a new growth market, these results and Tesla's middling market share in the country would seem to indicate that deliveries erosion is being prevented by substituting margin erosion at a rate that seems unsustainable.

To make matters worse, Tesla CIO Nagesh Saldi announced Thursday that he would be leaving the company, just one week before the Robotaxi event. He was in part responsible for Tesla's push into AI and autonomous driving, overseeing the development of the company's data centers in Texas and New York. While an executive leaving isn't inherently a bad thing, the timing of this departure in particular is hard to ignore. Saldi's efforts appear to have been integral to much of the work that would enable a Tesla Robotaxi initiative, and yet, a week before the product's supposed unveiling, he calls it quits? Without reading too much into this, it certainly can't be interpreted as a bullish development for an event reveal that, if all goes according to Musk's plan, should have been a celebration of his efforts.

So now, with this context, how are we to view the upcoming Robotaxi event? As I wrote in an article a few weeks back, which can be read here, Elon Musk has been promising a fully autonomous vehicle/taxi every year for nearly a decade with nothing to show for it. Now he's apparently ready to reveal it to the world for real this time, but Tesla's currently available full self-driving ("FSD") mode is still a Level 2 system at best. It would take a monumental technological leap, kept entirely secret, and withheld from FSD for some inexplicable reason for this upcoming event to show off anything remotely close to Musk's promised vision.

Meanwhile, Waymo, which has been running an actual autonomous taxi fleet in Phoenix and San Francisco for years, has recently announced an expansion of its service to Austin and Atlanta through a partnership with Uber (UBER). TSLA bulls have argued that Tesla is the only current player in autonomous vehicles that has the necessary production capacity and scale to build a large fleet of AV taxis, and while this may be the case, the company has shown little in the way of progress towards this goal beyond hyped up events like the one next week. Building the autonomous taxi, the hardware, is the easy part. The software that enables the "autonomous" part of the term is the hard part, and, despite the growing number of FSD miles for Tesla to train its models on, it will be many years before the company approaches even Waymo's current position, in my opinion.

This all leaves the stock in a precarious position going into next Thursday: Sentiment is already fairly bearish following the lackluster delivery numbers and the departure of a key autonomous driving C-suite executive before what is meant to be an autonomous driving breakthrough for Tesla. As I've said previously, I think we can expect the event to feature a slick prototype or two perhaps doing a pre-determined route on an empty roadway or track in what will essentially amount to vaporware in terms of its impact on the autonomous vehicle arms race. The company will not suddenly pull a fleet of autonomous taxis out of a hat to challenge Waymo, or even to begin a small-scale rideshare service pilot program. Investors hoping for that should prepare to be disappointed.

To be honest, I'd been mostly assuming that this would be a commonly held opinion, considering how many promises Musk has broken in this arena in particular. But I've seen many articles on Seeking Alpha and elsewhere, and comments across forums, hyping this event up as one of the major milestones in the history of autonomous vehicles. While I, of course, cannot predict the future, I think investors would be wise not to buy into such hype, to be realistic about their expectations, and to analytically judge whatever is presented rather than buying into Musk's promises yet again.

Investor Takeaway

It has been all bad news for Tesla this week, and I expect the news to get worse. Sentiment has turned bearish after weak delivery numbers, which will likely result in gross margin continuing to trend down, the departure of a key autonomous driving executive, and what I expect will be a let-down of a Robotaxi event. While I previously rated TSLA a Hold on what I anticipated would be strong delivery numbers offset by a downbeat Robotaxi reaction, this confluence of negative signals has pushed me to a Sell in the short-term timeframe.

The upcoming trading days before the event could still see an uptrend as hype continues to build (Musk is nothing if not a master promoter), but I expect we will see a negative price reaction when it is revealed that Tesla has not, in fact, cracked the autonomous driving puzzle yet. But hey, maybe next year?

Thanks for reading!

","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Tesla Stock: We, Are Selling (Rating Downgrade)
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nTesla Stock: We, Are Selling (Rating Downgrade)\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2024-10-07 20:47 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Underwhelming vehicle delivery numbers and the departure of the CIO have TSLA shares dropping.I expect the upcoming Robotaxi event will further disappoint investors. With bearish sentiment abound, I ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4725340-tesla-stock-we-are-selling-rating-downgrade","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5a36db9d73b4222bc376d24ccc48c8a4","article_id":"2473756128","content_text":"Underwhelming vehicle delivery numbers and the departure of the CIO have TSLA shares dropping.I expect the upcoming Robotaxi event will further disappoint investors. With bearish sentiment abound, I think the stock should be dropped for the time being.Sven PiperTesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) (NEOE:TSLA:CA) shares have been bleeding the last few trading days as bad news continues to roll in leading up to the company's Robotaxi event, dubbed \"We, Robot,\" next Thursday. The company produced nearly 480,000 EVs in the second quarter, and deliveries rocketed 83% higher year over year.

That's leading to boosts in analyst share price targets, as well as earnings estimates. But Tesla stock has more than doubled year to date and is higher by nearly 50% over the past three months. Investors might be wondering whether that combination of things means Tesla stock should be bought, sold, or just held at this stage. Here are some more things to consider when making that call.

The valuation question

Tesla shares have never moved based on traditional valuation metrics. Yet the strength in its earnings over the past year combined with a correction in the stock price brought its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio down to the mid-20s at the beginning of this year. But the rebound in the market -- and Tesla stock in particular -- has brought the share price back to nosebleed levels.

TSLA PE Ratio data by YCharts.

That's because investors believe there is much more room for Tesla to grow its earnings. Even with many other EV makers entering the market, Tesla still holds about 60% market share in the U.S. No one expects it to hold on to that massive share for much longer. In China, for example, where competition is building more EVs at scale than in the U.S., Tesla holds about a 10% share of the battery electric and plug-in hybrid market.

But EVs still have a less-than-7% penetration in the U.S. automotive market. So even with a declining market share as others ramp up production, Tesla could well hit its 50% annual production growth goal for several more years. After its surprising second-quarter data, the company is in a position to beat its 1.8 million unit production estimate for 2023. While vehicle sales -- and earnings -- should continue to grow in the years ahead, it's not the only growing revenue stream for Tesla.

Services and other revenue

Tesla breaks out its energy business for investors to monitor. Revenue from energy generation and storage grew nearly 150% year over year, reaching more than $1.5 billion in the first quarter. That represented 6.5% of the company's total revenue. It should also continue to grow, as Tesla has invested heavily to grow its facilities in Nevada and California.

But there's another segment that investors need to start paying closer attention to. What Tesla designates as "services and other revenue" includes the company's Supercharger network. That segment also grew strongly year over year in the first quarter and contributed about 8% of total revenue.

Since that time Tesla has agreed to open up its fast charging network to non-Tesla brands. Ford, General Motors, Rivian, and Volvo have all reached deals with Tesla for their customers to use the Supercharger network. While the terms of those agreements weren't disclosed, the move to open its proprietary charging network to others will drive revenue in this segment higher.

The convenience and reliability of Tesla's Superchargers undoubtedly drove some EV buyers to Tesla. There is the possibility that the new strategy will help competitors sell their growing EV offerings. But if the adoption of EVs grows as many industry observers believe, the positive contributions should outweigh any benefits it gives to competing manufacturers. Investors should monitor Tesla's services segment in the coming months and years to see how much it will help drive revenue and earnings growth.

Additional opportunities from Tesla's charging and energy businesses are partly what long-term investors are looking at when buying Tesla shares now. And investors should consider Tesla a long-term investment. For those that might need the money in the near future, it would make sense to sell some Tesla stock now after its recent run. But for those looking for future gains, holding or adding new shares still makes sense now.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The company produced nearly 480,000 EVs in the second quarter, and deliveries rocketed 83% higher year over year. The valuation questionTesla shares have never moved based on traditional valuation metrics. Services and other revenueTesla breaks out its energy business for investors to monitor. What Tesla designates as \"services and other revenue\" includes the company's Supercharger network. But for those looking for future gains, holding or adding new shares still makes sense now.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":291,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":196412126548208,"gmtCreate":1688972663443,"gmtModify":1688972667727,"author":{"id":"3584842175625851","authorId":"3584842175625851","name":"Sirvegas","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3584842175625851","idStr":"3584842175625851"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","listText":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","text":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/196412126548208","repostId":"196166146400512","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":196166146400512,"gmtCreate":1688901780917,"gmtModify":1688904960268,"author":{"id":"9000000000000726","authorId":"9000000000000726","name":"OneGlanceTrader","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b3238403b0b83a5914db126417a3494f","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"9000000000000726","idStr":"9000000000000726"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"\n \n \n I Tried Trading For A Living For Financial Independence [Week 49]\n \n","listText":"I Tried Trading For A Living For Financial Independence [Week 49]","text":"I Tried Trading For A Living For Financial Independence [Week 49]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":2,"essential":2,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/196166146400512","isVote":1,"tweetType":2,"object":{"id":"5d51fcbc3e0b4bb9a933131a66eb3221","tweetId":"196166146400512","title":"I Tried Trading For A Living For Financial Independence [Week 49]","videoUrl":"http://v.tigerbbs.com/1688901775679d923f1cc6cd8f9d87fd0b969239e4407.mp4","poster":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/369c0b1a53d79fa88b443da91dd9dbab","shareLink":"http://v.tigerbbs.com/1688901775679d923f1cc6cd8f9d87fd0b969239e4407.mp4"},"viewCount":0,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":318,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":194337687556264,"gmtCreate":1688483850054,"gmtModify":1688484225292,"author":{"id":"3584842175625851","authorId":"3584842175625851","name":"Sirvegas","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3584842175625851","idStr":"3584842175625851"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"past 2 years was a blood bath, 2023 is a year of recovery for me. Especially when looking at the back of the curve, as markets price in a higher for longer monetary policy from the Fed, with the 30-year rate rising back to 3.92%. But more importantly, real rates are pushing higher, with the 10-Yr TIP rate now trading at 1.58% and approaching that critical level of resistance that could lead to a big break out and push to new highs.

Bloomberg

The 10-yr TIP is a critical rate to follow because assets such as long duration growth are priced using real rates, with the Nasdaq 100 being key. The spread between the Nasdaq 100 earnings yield and the 10-yr real yield is now at 1.93%, levels not seen since the mid-2000s, when the Nasdaq was in the middle of a valuation reset from the 2000 bubble. More importantly, the Nasdaq 100 earnings yield is 235 bps below the historical average of the last 10 years.

Bloomberg

The other piece of the puzzle is that liquidity is now starting to be withdrawn from the Nasdaq 100 futures market, as measured by the depth of the book. Especially when looking at the back of the curve, as markets price in a higher for longer monetary policy from the Fed, with the 30-year rate rising back to 3.92%. But more importantly, real rates are pushing higher, with the 10-Yr TIP rate now trading at 1.58% and approaching that critical level of resistance that could lead to a big break out and push to new highs.BloombergThe 10-yr TIP is a critical rate to follow because assets such as long duration growth are priced using real rates, with the Nasdaq 100 being key. The spread between the Nasdaq 100 earnings yield and the 10-yr real yield is now at 1.93%, levels not seen since the mid-2000s, when the Nasdaq was in the middle of a valuation reset from the 2000 bubble. More importantly, the Nasdaq 100 earnings yield is 235 bps below the historical average of the last 10 years.BloombergThe other piece of the puzzle is that liquidity is now starting to be withdrawn from the Nasdaq 100 futures market, as measured by the depth of the book. The last time the depth of the book declined was back in August of 2022, which also marked a significant top in the market.CME GroupThe addition and withdrawal of liquidity in the Nasdaq futures market in August 2022 coincided with a move up and down reserve balances held at the Federal Reserve. Currently, reserve balances are likely to decline due to the refill of the Treasury General Account. Further, as we move into the quarter end, the reverse repo activity should begin to climb, leading to lower reserves.BloombergThe path for inflation is sticky and will continue not to be smooth, and if the current rate of changes remains, headline inflation could very well begin to accelerate in the second half of 2023 as the base effects of the first half of 2022 wane. Translating into yields staying elevated and leaving stock particularly vulnerable as the equity risk premium gets dangerously narrow and liquidity is withdrawn from the market.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":332,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9918875744,"gmtCreate":1664369771788,"gmtModify":1676537441862,"author":{"id":"3584842175625851","authorId":"3584842175625851","name":"Sirvegas","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3584842175625851","idStr":"3584842175625851"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"As long it don't walk Xiaomi cyberone then Tesla 🚀","listText":"As long it don't walk Xiaomi cyberone then Tesla 🚀","text":"As long it don't walk Xiaomi cyberone then Tesla 🚀","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9918875744","repostId":"1108273783","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"1108273783","pubTimestamp":1664368419,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1108273783?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-09-28 20:33","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Tesla’s AI Day Offers a Glimpse of Just How Sentient Its Bots Have Become","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1108273783","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"Elon Musk retakes the stage a year after an unforgettably strange stunt was performed in a spandex s","content":"

Elon Musk retakes the stage a year after an unforgettably strange stunt was performed in a spandex suit.

Tesla has long staged splashy events to generate buzz and media coverage of forthcoming — and sometimes aspirational — products.

Now he's apparently ready to reveal it to the world for real this time, but Tesla's currently available full self-driving (\"FSD\") mode is still a Level 2 system at best. It would take a monumental technological leap, kept entirely secret, and withheld from FSD for some inexplicable reason for this upcoming event to show off anything remotely close to Musk's promised vision.Meanwhile, Waymo, which has been running an actual autonomous taxi fleet in Phoenix and San Francisco for years, has recently announced an expansion of its service to Austin and Atlanta through a partnership with Uber (UBER). The software that enables the \"autonomous\" part of the term is the hard part, and, despite the growing number of FSD miles for Tesla to train its models on, it will be many years before the company approaches even Waymo's current position, in my opinion. While I, of course, cannot predict the future, I think investors would be wise not to buy into such hype, to be realistic about their expectations, and to analytically judge whatever is presented rather than buying into Musk's promises yet again.Investor TakeawayIt has been all bad news for Tesla this week, and I expect the news to get worse. Thanks for reading!","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":9,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9010781316,"gmtCreate":1648472123112,"gmtModify":1676534341942,"author":{"id":"3584842175625851","authorId":"3584842175625851","name":"Sirvegas","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584842175625851","authorIdStr":"3584842175625851"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"5:1 ?","listText":"5:1 ?","text":"5:1 ?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9010781316","repostId":"1132642886","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"1132642886","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1648468119,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1132642886?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-03-28 19:48","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Tesla Seeks Investor Approval for Stock Split","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1132642886","media":"Reuters","summary":"March 28 (Reuters) - Tesla Incwill seek investor approval to increase its number of shares to enable a stock split in the form of a dividend, the electric-car maker said on Monday, sending its shares ","content":"

March 28 (Reuters) - Tesla Inc will seek investor approval to increase its number of shares to enable a stock split in the form of a dividend, the electric-car maker said on Monday, sending its shares up 5% before the bell.

The proposal has been approved by its board and the shareholders will vote on it at the annual meeting.

The valuation questionTesla shares have never moved based on traditional valuation metrics. Services and other revenueTesla breaks out its energy business for investors to monitor. What Tesla designates as \"services and other revenue\" includes the company's Supercharger network. But for those looking for future gains, holding or adding new shares still makes sense now.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":291,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":187125954273384,"gmtCreate":1686724327237,"gmtModify":1686725115966,"author":{"id":"3584842175625851","authorId":"3584842175625851","name":"Sirvegas","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584842175625851","authorIdStr":"3584842175625851"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"SA is an ass wipe ","listText":"SA is an ass wipe ","text":"SA is an ass wipe","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/187125954273384","repostId":"2343567514","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2343567514","pubTimestamp":1686704403,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2343567514?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-06-14 09:00","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Stocks Are Dangerously Overvalued With More Rate Hikes To Come","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2343567514","media":"Seekingalpha","summary":"Douglas Rissing The CPI report shows that inflation has remained stubbornly slow to fall, with the CORE CPI rising at 5.3%, surpassing expectations for 5.2%, creating a problem for the Fed. On Sunday, Aug. 14, Elon Musk tweeted that the number of Tesla vehicles produced worldwide has surpassed 3 million.Given the supply chain and production constraints that the electric vehicle leader has faced this year, that is no small feat.
