Pm withholding tax. Tiger charges 30% withholding on my pm dividends. Philip Morris falls under the special category where it is an 80/20 company. An 80/20 company is a US company where 80 per cent of its gross income for a specified period is generated from active businesses outside the United States. I have contacted tiger but doesn't solve anything. Is anyone else being taxed on pm dividend?

The smarter play, however, is to concentrate on buying and holding stocks that have a history of growing their payouts. Stocks in that category have a history of producing higher returns than companies that strive to maintain outsized payouts.</p><p>The data is eye-opening. Over the last 50 years, dividend growers and initiators have delivered total annual returns averaging 10.7% -- higher than the S&amp;P 500&#39;s 8.2% average annual total return -- according to data by Ned Davis Research and Hartford Funds. For comparison, companies that maintained their dividends only produced average annual total returns of 7.1%.</p><p>Tech giants <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AAPL\">Apple </a> and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AVGO\">Broadcom</a> both have long histories of dividend growth. And with more payout increases likely down the road, they&#39;re smart buys for dividend investors as we start the year.</p><h3>A cash flow machine</h3><p>Some income-focused investors may dismiss Apple&#39;s stock given its paltry payout. Its current dividend yield of 0.7% is lower than the S&amp;P 500&#39;s 1.7% yield.</p><p>However, what Apple&#39;s dividend lacks in size, it more than makes up for in growth. The tech giant has increased its payout every year since it re-instituted its dividend in 2012, and has increased its annual payouts by 143% since then. Those growing payouts have helped drive market-crushing annualized total returns for Apple of nearly 21%, significantly outpacing the 13.2% average annual total returns of the S&amp;P 500.</p><p>Despite its mammoth size, Apple continues to grow at a healthy rate. It delivered another record-breaking quarter last period, with its revenue expanding by 8%. Meanwhile, its operating cash flow increased by $18 billion to more than $122 billion. That gave the company more money to invest in developing products and services, and more to return to shareholders via dividends and share repurchases. Between those two, Apple sent investors more than $29 billion last quarter, including about $3.7 billion in dividends.</p><p>Even with those outlays, it maintained a robust balance sheet with nearly $170 billion of cash and marketable securities. With its current dividend payment consuming only a small percentage of its cash flow, Apple has plenty of room to grow its payout.</p><h3>Accelerating its software growth</h3><p>Broadcom holds a more obvious appeal for income investors given its relatively attractive yield of 3.2%. That above-average payout is due to the company&#39;s strong cash flows and its dividend payout policy. The company converted 49% of its revenue into free cash flow in its fiscal 2022, which ended Oct. 30. Meanwhile, it set a policy to pay 50% of its prior fiscal year&#39;s free cash flow to shareholders via the dividend. It uses the other half to invest in growth and to repurchase shares. As it has been generating strong and growing free cash flow, Broadcom has steadily increased its dividend.</p><p>The semiconductor and infrastructure software solutions company increased its dividend by 12% for its fiscal 2023. That marked Broadcom&#39;s 12th straight year of increasing its payout since it initiated a dividend in its fiscal 2011. The company has increased its payout by a jaw-dropping 5,650% since that first payment. That has helped power it to a market-obliterating average annual total return of 31.3%, compared to 12.2% for the S&amp;P 500.</p><p>Broadcom should be able to continue growing its dividend. A big driver of its earnings is its burgeoning software business. The company is working to accelerate its software capabilities by acquiring VMware in a $61 billion cash-and-stock deal. That deal should provide new growth opportunities, helping Broadcom to continue expanding its free cash flow and dividends.</p><h3>Consider the total picture</h3><p>It can be easy for income-focused investors to be drawn to the allure of high current dividend yields. However, the wiser investments can be those companies that are well-positioned (and well-inclined) to grow their payouts, because those companies have historically produced higher total returns for their shareholders. That has certainly been the case for Apple and Broadcom since they started paying dividends more than a decade ago. The smarter play, however, is to concentrate on buying and holding stocks that have a history of growing their payouts. Stocks in that category have a history of producing higher returns than companies that strive to maintain outsized payouts.The data is eye-opening. Over the last 50 years, dividend growers and initiators have delivered total annual returns averaging 10.7% -- higher than the S&P 500's 8.2% average annual total return -- according to data by Ned Davis Research and Hartford Funds. For comparison, companies that maintained their dividends only produced average annual total returns of 7.1%.Tech giants Apple  and Broadcom both have long histories of dividend growth. And with more payout increases likely down the road, they're smart buys for dividend investors as we start the year.A cash flow machineSome income-focused investors may dismiss Apple's stock given its paltry payout. Its current dividend yield of 0.7% is lower than the S&P 500's 1.7% yield.However, what Apple's dividend lacks in size, it more than makes up for in growth. The tech giant has increased its payout every year since it re-instituted its dividend in 2012, and has increased its annual payouts by 143% since then. Those growing payouts have helped drive market-crushing annualized total returns for Apple of nearly 21%, significantly outpacing the 13.2% average annual total returns of the S&P 500.Despite its mammoth size, Apple continues to grow at a healthy rate. It delivered another record-breaking quarter last period, with its revenue expanding by 8%. Meanwhile, its operating cash flow increased by $18 billion to more than $122 billion. That gave the company more money to invest in developing products and services, and more to return to shareholders via dividends and share repurchases. Between those two, Apple sent investors more than $29 billion last quarter, including about $3.7 billion in dividends.Even with those outlays, it maintained a robust balance sheet with nearly $170 billion of cash and marketable securities. With its current dividend payment consuming only a small percentage of its cash flow, Apple has plenty of room to grow its payout.Accelerating its software growthBroadcom holds a more obvious appeal for income investors given its relatively attractive yield of 3.2%. That above-average payout is due to the company's strong cash flows and its dividend payout policy. The company converted 49% of its revenue into free cash flow in its fiscal 2022, which ended Oct. 30. Meanwhile, it set a policy to pay 50% of its prior fiscal year's free cash flow to shareholders via the dividend. It uses the other half to invest in growth and to repurchase shares. As it has been generating strong and growing free cash flow, Broadcom has steadily increased its dividend.The semiconductor and infrastructure software solutions company increased its dividend by 12% for its fiscal 2023. That marked Broadcom's 12th straight year of increasing its payout since it initiated a dividend in its fiscal 2011. The company has increased its payout by a jaw-dropping 5,650% since that first payment. That has helped power it to a market-obliterating average annual total return of 31.3%, compared to 12.2% for the S&P 500.Broadcom should be able to continue growing its dividend. A big driver of its earnings is its burgeoning software business. The company is working to accelerate its software capabilities by acquiring VMware in a $61 billion cash-and-stock deal. That deal should provide new growth opportunities, helping Broadcom to continue expanding its free cash flow and dividends.Consider the total pictureIt can be easy for income-focused investors to be drawn to the allure of high current dividend yields. However, the wiser investments can be those companies that are well-positioned (and well-inclined) to grow their payouts, because those companies have historically produced higher total returns for their shareholders. The market is expected to see some 375 deals for the year, raising $125 billion, according to Renaissance, beating the $97 billion raised in 2000 during the dot-com boom. </p>\n<p></p>\n<p>“After the long summer break, this week is a litmus test for upcoming tech, biotech, and consumer IPOs,” Smith wrote in a market commentary. The list includes a Swiss running-shoe company backed by tennis giant Roger Federer, a drive-through coffee kiosk operator and a mortgage insurer that was spun out of insurer Genworth Financial. </p>\n<p></p>\n<p>The biggest deal of the week is expected to come from Thoughtworks,a Chicago-based technology consultancy that will go public at a valuation of up to $6.1 billion.</p>\n<p>The company, which expects to change its name from Turing Holding Corp. to Thoughtworks with completion of the IPO, said a total of 36.84 million shares will be offered, split between the company and selling shareholders.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>The deal is expected to price at between $18 and $20 a share, and the stock will trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “TWKS.” Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan are the lead underwriters. The company recorded net income of $79.3 million on revenue of $803.4 million in 2020, after income of $28.4 million on revenue of $772.2 million in 2019.</p>\n<p>The Swiss athletic-footwear maker On Holding&nbsp;is expected to raise up to $622 million at a valuation of almost $6 billion. On has applied to list 31.1 million shares priced at $18 to $20 each on the New York Stock Exchange, under the ticker symbol “ONON.”</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Morgan Stanley are lead underwriters in a syndicate of nine banks on the On deal. Proceeds are to be used for general corporate purposes. The company has a line that it co-developed with Federer.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>The company had net income of 3.8 million Swiss francs ($4.1 million) in the six months through June 30, after a loss of 33.1 million francs in the year-earlier period,&nbsp;according to its IPO documents.&nbsp;Sales came to 315.5 million francs, up from 170.9 million francs.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Also from Switzerland, sports betting site Sportrader Group AG&nbsp;plans to offer 19 million shares priced at $25 to $28 each, for a valuation of up to $31 billion. The company has applied to list on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “SRAD.” JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup and UBS are lead underwriters in a syndicate of 13 banks working on the deal.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Proceeds are to be used for working capital and to spur growth. The company had a net profit of $29.9 million in the first six months of the year, on revenue of $321 million,&nbsp;according to its filing documents.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Dutch Bros Inc.,an operator of drive-through shops that serve hot and cold drinks mostly in western U.S. states, is planning to offer 21.1 million shares priced at $18 to $20 each in its IPO, valuing the company at up to $3.3 billion.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>BofA Securities, JPMorgan and Jefferies are lead underwriters in a syndicate of 13 banks working on the deal. The company has applied to list on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “BROS.”</p>\n<p>Proceeds are to be used to purchase additional Class A shares — the company is planning to have four classes of stock with differing voting rights. The company had a net loss of $13.6 million, or 32 cents a share, in the first six months of the year, narrower than the loss of $16.5 million, or 38 cents a share, posted in the year-earlier period. Revenue fell to $227.9 million from $327.4 million.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p><b>Rounding out the list are:</b></p>\n<p>•&nbsp;Definitive Healthcare Corp.,&nbsp;a Massachusetts-based provider of healthcare commercial intelligence, is planning to offer 15.56 million shares in its PO, which is expected to price between $21 and $24 a share. At that pricing, the company could be valued at up to $3.55 billion.</p>\n<p>•&nbsp;Enact Holdings Inc., a mortgage insurer owned by Genworth, is planning to offer 13.3 million shares priced at $19 to $20 each. The company would be valued at $3.3 billion at the top of that range. The company said all shares will be sold by Genworth and it will not receive any proceeds. It has applied to list on Nasdaq under the ticker “ACT.” Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan are lead underwriters in a team of nine banks working on the deal.</p>\n<p>•&nbsp;ForgeRock<a href=\"https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/FORG?mod=MW_story_quote&amp;mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\">,</a>&nbsp;a California-based identity security platform, is looking to raise up to $264 million with an offering of 11 million shares priced between $21 and $24 a share. That pricing would value the company a valuation of up to $1.91 billion.</p>\n<p>The stock is expected to list on the NYSE under the ticker symbol “FORG.” Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan are the lead underwriters. The company recorded a net loss of $41.8 million on revenue of $127.6 million in 2020, after a loss of $36.9 million on revenue of $104.5 million in 2019.</p>\n<p><b>•</b>Dice Therapeutics&nbsp;is expected to raise up to $170 million at a valuation of up to $583 million and list on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “DICE.” The biotech is developing therapies to treat chronic diseases in the field of immunology.</p>\n<p><b>•</b>Surgical robotics developer Procept BioRobotics,is aiming to raise up to $132 million at a valuation of about $1 billion with plans to list on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “PRCT.” BofA Securities and Goldman Sachs are lead underwriters.</p>\n<p>“We develop, manufacture and sell the AquaBeam Robotic System, an advanced, image-guided, surgical robotic system for use in minimally invasive urologic surgery with an initial focus on treating benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH,” the company says in its IPO documents.</p>\n<p><b>•</b>Tyra Biosciences is aiming to raise $107.2 million in IPO proceeds at a valuation of $589 million. The biotech’s leading product candidate is a treatment for bladder cancer. The European and U.S. markets were down and the Asian bourses are tipped to open in similar fashion.</p><p>The STI finished barely higher on Friday following gains from the properties and a mixed picture from the financial sector.</p><p>For the day, the index rose 0.04 points or 0.00 percent to finish at 3,294.86 after trading between 3,281.58 and 3,298.94. Volume was 1.03 billion shares worth 1.12 billion Singapore dollars. There were 229 decliners and 224 gainers.</p><p>Among the actives, Ascendas REIT advanced 0.70 percent, while CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust rose 0.50 percent, City Developments added 0.56 percent, Comfort DelGro climbed 0.73 percent, DBS Group retreated 1.22 percent, Genting Singapore slumped 0.64 percent, Keppel Corp surged 1.32 percent, Mapletree Commercial Trust and Singapore Technologies Engineering both gained 0.54 percent, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation collected 0.08 percent, SATS soared 1.27 percent, Singapore Airlines spiked 1.19 percent, Singapore Exchange eased 0.10 percent, Singapore Press Holdings lost 0.43 percent, SingTel increased 0.40 percent, Thai Beverage jumped 0.76 percent, United Overseas Bank and Wilmar International both were up 0.23 percent, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding tumbled 1.49 percent and Dairy Farm International, Mapletree Logistics Trust and SembCorp Industries were unchanged.</p><p>The lead from Wall Street is negative as the major U.S. markets were down again on Friday, hugging both sides of the unchanged line in the morning before going into freefall in the afternoon to end in the red for the fourth straight session.</p><p>For the day, the Dow plummeted 450.02 points or 1.30 percent to finish at 34,265.37, while the NASDAQ plunged 385.10 points or 2.72 percent to close at 13.768.92 and the S&amp;P 500 tumbled 84.79 points or 1.89 percent to end at 4,397.94.</p><p>The particularly harsh drop on the NASDAQ was fueled by a weak earnings report from Netflix, which set off a cascade of selling pressure among the other markets.</p><p>Surging bond prices also drove the markets lower, exacerbating interest rate concerns; most analysts believe a rate hike of at least 25 basis points from the FOMC is imminent in March.</p><p>Oil prices fell finished lower on Friday for the second straight session, although they came up from session lows. Crude&#39;s correction continued after touching a seven-year high earlier in the week on demand optimism and short-term supply disruptions. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down 0.86 percent at $84.81 per barrel after falling as much as 3.2 percent earlier.</p><p>Closer to home, Singapore will release December figures for consumer prices later today, with forecasts suggesting an annual increase of 3.75 percent overall and 1.7 percent for core CPI. In this article, I will compile the Q&amp;A exchanges I had with our members in a more coherent way and explain why I am not worried at all.</p><p>This article is also triggered by Berkshire Hathaway&#39;s latest 13F disclosure, which revealed that Warren Buffett just added more Apple shares to its existing substantial position (see the chart below). As seen, Buffett added about 0.04% to BRK&#39;s existing position in the past quarter. All told, BRK now holds more than 895M AAPL shares, translating into about 5.6% of all AAPL&#39;s outstanding shares. In the meantime, both companies have been aggressively repurchasing their own shares - making the BRK&#39;s effective holding of AAPL even more concentrated than on the surface.</p><p>In the remainder of this article, I will explain why BRK stock and/or AAPL stock shareholders like myself, instead of worrying about the overexposure risk, should only welcome such transactions to continue. I will explain why returning capital via these transactions is far better for shareholders of both companies (than, say, dividends).</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cdc0d55f394d18e63110b389934c8db5\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"272\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>dataroma.com</p><h2>BRK and AAPL: Compounding on Steroid</h2><p>I have written a series of earlier articles arguing why both BRK and AAPL are perpetual compounders. Here, I will further the argument and explain why their compounding power is even more potent given: A) BRK&#39;s continued addition of AAPL shares as just mentioned above; and B) the aggressive repurchases at both places. I will revisit A in more detail in a late section. And in this section, I will examine B in more depth first.</p><p>Berkshire Hathaway had repurchased a significant amount of its own stock in recent years since it first announced a share repurchase program in 2011. As seen in the top panel of the chart below, in 2019, it repurchased about $2.2 billion of its own stock during the third quarter of that year, which set a record for the company at that time. After that, Berkshire Hathaway continued to repurchase its own stock aggressively. The buybacks totaled more than $24 billion for 2020. All told, its share counts (in terms of equivalent B shares) shrank from about 2.46B in 2018 to the current 2.20B shares, a more than 10% reduction in about ~ 3 years.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/295859ab99c2b4563e98191a71a21dfd\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"445\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Seeking Alpha Data</p><p>AAPL&#39;s repurchase history is even longer and more aggressive, as you can see from the bottom panel of the plot above. AAPL has been buying back its shares at a steady and gigantic pace in the past decade. It has been spending on average about $20B on a QUARTERLY basis nonstop buying back its shares since 2013. As a result, the number of its outstanding shares dropped from ~27 billion shares in 2013 to only 15.96B shares now, a reduction of ~41%. As its CFO Luca Maestri expressed in a recent earning report (&#34;ER&#34;) session, the company has no plan to deaccelerate this pace. As seen in the quote from this ER below, (Note: The quote has been slightly edited for clarity and emphasis by me), buybacks will be the main mechanism for AAPL to get to cash-neutral. And with $110+ billion of free cash flow per year, that means A LOT of buybacks going forward.</p><blockquote><i>In terms of cash deployment, obviously, we like to look at the capital return program over the long arc of time. And we have done, since the beginning of the program, </i><i><b>we&#39;ve done over $550 billion of buyback at an average repurchase price of $47</b></i><i>. So, the program has been incredibly successful.</i></blockquote><blockquote><i>We are still in a position where we have net cash. And we said all along, we want to get to cash-neutral at some point. </i><i><b>Our cash generation has been very, very strong over the years, particularly last year…</b></i><i> I mentioned in the prepared remarks, </i><i><b>we did $111 billion of free cash flow. That&#39;s up 20% year-over-year.</b></i><i> And so, we will put that capital to use for investors.</i></blockquote><h2>The Overpowered Double Buyback</h2><p>After examining their buybacks separately above, now let me show why the double buybacks, especially when combined with BRK&#39;s continued addition of AAPL shares, would be even more overpowering. In his 2021 shareholder letter, Buffett already discussed the overpowering nature of these transactions. The quote below is again slightly edited for clarity and emphasis by me.</p><blockquote><i>Apple - our runner-up Giant as measured by its yearend market value - is a different sort of holding. Here,</i></blockquote><blockquote><i>our ownership is a mere 5.55%, up from 5.39% a year earlier. That increase sounds like small potatoes. But consider that each</i> <i>0.1%</i> <i>of Apple&#39;s 2021 earnings amounted to</i> <i>$100 million. </i><i><b>We spent</b></i> <b><i>no</i></b> <b><i>Berkshire funds to gain our accretion. Apple&#39;s repurchases did the job</i></b><i>. It&#39;s important to understand that only</i> <i>dividends</i> <i>from Apple are counted in the GAAP earnings Berkshire reports - and last year, Apple paid us $785 million of those. Yet our &#34;share&#34; of Apple&#39;s earnings amounted to a staggering $5.6</i> <i>billion. </i><i><b>Much of what the company retained was used to repurchase Apple shares, an act we applaud.</b></i></blockquote><p>Next, I will elaborate along this line of thought, and project the outcomes in a couple of years if these transactions continue. My projections are summarized in the next table below. These estimates were based on a few simple assumptions. Justifications for these assumptions are scattered in my earlier articles. So here I think it is a good idea to briefly summarize them in one place.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/305563157dabff1cced227df92455dd9\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"162\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Author Based on Seeking Alpha Data</p><p>Regarding AAPL, the key assumptions are:</p><ol><li>It will continue using a constant percentage of its operating cash flow for share repurchases (and the percentage was assumed to be 78%, which is the average in recent years).</li><li>The company&#39;s profits are projected to grow at a 7.4% CAGR according to consensus estimates (see the second chart below). Although as repeatedly argued in my earlier articles, I think a 7.4% growth rate is a bit conservative given AAPL&#39;s ROCE of 100%+, plenty of cash for reinvestment rate, and its pricing power to easily beat the inflation factor.</li><li>I also assumed the average repurchase price to be 20x its operating cash flow.</li></ol><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1da53996c993365274733af43df46fbe\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"260\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Author Based on Seeking Alpha Data</p><p>As for BRK, the key assumptions are parallel to those invoked for AAPL above. And the differences are in the specific numbers. First, the percentage of operating income spent on repurchases is taken to be 68%, which is the average between 2019 and 2022. Second, the repurchase price is assumed to be its book value (&#34;BV&#34;) plus 8x of its operating cash flow. See my earlier analysis for details of this valuation model.</p><p>Based on these assumptions, AAPL&#39;s outstanding shares are projected to decrease by another 18.0% over the next 5 years. At the same time, BRK&#39;s share count is projected to shrink by another 11.6%. As a result, BRK ownership of AAPL would increase from the current 5.6% to 6.8%, a 1.2% increase. Buffett did a good job above to contextualize such an increase: each 0.1% of AAPL earnings amounts to over $100 million. So, a 1.2% increase translates into an additional $1.2B of ownership of AAPL&#39;s earnings!</p><p>When growth is considered, BRK&#39;s ownership of AAPL&#39;s earnings would reach a staggering $11.3 billion in five years, as highlighted in the 6th row highlighted in red and bold. This represents an almost 80% (79.1% to be more exact) increase in BRK&#39;s claim to AAPL&#39;s total earnings compared to its current share of $6.3 billion - all thanks to the overpowering combo of their repurchases and BRK&#39;s addition of AAPL shares. Notably, the 79.1% increase is much more than the simple sum of their individual repurchases (18.0% for AAPL and 11.6% for BRK). That is why in my view, this is a textbook example of 1+1&gt;2.</p><h2>The 4% Buyback Taxes and Final Thoughts</h2><p>Risks specific to either company have been discussed by many other SA authors, and I won&#39;t further add on here. Here, I will concentrate on the risks specific to the type A and B transactions (i.e., BRK&#39;s ownership of AAPL shares and their buybacks) analyzed in this article.</p><p>A main risk involves the possibility of a higher buyback tax. President Biden recently proposed quadrupling the 1% tax on stock buybacks (with the intention of encouraging companies to invest more in growth instead of boosting the returns for shareholders). Such a proposal, if indeed signed into law, could impact the potency of the double buybacks. And the following results are my estimate of the potential impact.</p><p>As seen, under the same assumptions made before, a 4% tax is projected to cause AAPL to pay a total of $21.03B in taxes in the next 5 years on its repurchases and BRK is projected to pay a total of $3.58B. And their amount spent on repurchases would shrink by these corresponding amounts. These are certainly substantial amounts. However, the overall impact would be minor for both companies. To wit, with a 4% buyback tax, AAPL&#39;s share shrinkage is projected to be 17.4% in 5 years, slightly lower than the 18.0% projected without the tax hike. And BRK&#39;s share shrinkage is projected to be 11.1%, again also lower than the 11.6% projected without the tax hike.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0027eb24568a4c58bdbee0f748220732\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"134\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Author Based on Seeking Alpha Data</p><p>To conclude, as quintessential perpetual compounders, BRK and AAPL are both good companies to hold for the long term in their own right. When considered together, they just become even more overpowering. Consider a final detail from my above projections, BRK&#39;s claim to AAPL&#39;s earnings would exceed $11.3 billion in 5 years if current buybacks continue. And BRK&#39;s operating cash flow has been &#34;only&#34; about $20 billion in recent years. When that time comes, AAPL won&#39;t be BRK&#39;s runner-up 4th giant. It would be BRK&#39;s largest cash cow.</p><p>That is why, as a BRK and AAPL shareholder, I don&#39;t worry about overexposure. AAPL has been buying back its shares at a steady and gigantic pace in the past decade. It has been spending on average about $20B on a QUARTERLY basis nonstop buying back its shares since 2013. As a result, the number of its outstanding shares dropped from ~27 billion shares in 2013 to only 15.96B shares now, a reduction of ~41%. As its CFO Luca Maestri expressed in a recent earning report (\"ER\") session, the company has no plan to deaccelerate this pace. As seen in the quote from this ER below, (Note: The quote has been slightly edited for clarity and emphasis by me), buybacks will be the main mechanism for AAPL to get to cash-neutral. And with $110+ billion of free cash flow per year, that means A LOT of buybacks going forward.In terms of cash deployment, obviously, we like to look at the capital return program over the long arc of time. And we have done, since the beginning of the program, we've done over $550 billion of buyback at an average repurchase price of $47. So, the program has been incredibly successful.We are still in a position where we have net cash. And we said all along, we want to get to cash-neutral at some point. Our cash generation has been very, very strong over the years, particularly last year… I mentioned in the prepared remarks, we did $111 billion of free cash flow. That's up 20% year-over-year. And so, we will put that capital to use for investors.The Overpowered Double BuybackAfter examining their buybacks separately above, now let me show why the double buybacks, especially when combined with BRK's continued addition of AAPL shares, would be even more overpowering. In his 2021 shareholder letter, Buffett already discussed the overpowering nature of these transactions. The quote below is again slightly edited for clarity and emphasis by me.Apple - our runner-up Giant as measured by its yearend market value - is a different sort of holding. Here,our ownership is a mere 5.55%, up from 5.39% a year earlier. That increase sounds like small potatoes. But consider that each 0.1% of Apple's 2021 earnings amounted to $100 million. We spent no Berkshire funds to gain our accretion. Apple's repurchases did the job. It's important to understand that only dividends from Apple are counted in the GAAP earnings Berkshire reports - and last year, Apple paid us $785 million of those. Yet our \"share\" of Apple's earnings amounted to a staggering $5.6 billion. Much of what the company retained was used to repurchase Apple shares, an act we applaud.Next, I will elaborate along this line of thought, and project the outcomes in a couple of years if these transactions continue. My projections are summarized in the next table below. These estimates were based on a few simple assumptions. Justifications for these assumptions are scattered in my earlier articles. So here I think it is a good idea to briefly summarize them in one place.Author Based on Seeking Alpha DataRegarding AAPL, the key assumptions are:It will continue using a constant percentage of its operating cash flow for share repurchases (and the percentage was assumed to be 78%, which is the average in recent years).The company's profits are projected to grow at a 7.4% CAGR according to consensus estimates (see the second chart below). Although as repeatedly argued in my earlier articles, I think a 7.4% growth rate is a bit conservative given AAPL's ROCE of 100%+, plenty of cash for reinvestment rate, and its pricing power to easily beat the inflation factor.I also assumed the average repurchase price to be 20x its operating cash flow.Author Based on Seeking Alpha DataAs for BRK, the key assumptions are parallel to those invoked for AAPL above. And the differences are in the specific numbers. First, the percentage of operating income spent on repurchases is taken to be 68%, which is the average between 2019 and 2022. Second, the repurchase price is assumed to be its book value (\"BV\") plus 8x of its operating cash flow. See my earlier analysis for details of this valuation model.Based on these assumptions, AAPL's outstanding shares are projected to decrease by another 18.0% over the next 5 years. At the same time, BRK's share count is projected to shrink by another 11.6%. As a result, BRK ownership of AAPL would increase from the current 5.6% to 6.8%, a 1.2% increase. Buffett did a good job above to contextualize such an increase: each 0.1% of AAPL earnings amounts to over $100 million. So, a 1.2% increase translates into an additional $1.2B of ownership of AAPL's earnings!When growth is considered, BRK's ownership of AAPL's earnings would reach a staggering $11.3 billion in five years, as highlighted in the 6th row highlighted in red and bold. This represents an almost 80% (79.1% to be more exact) increase in BRK's claim to AAPL's total earnings compared to its current share of $6.3 billion - all thanks to the overpowering combo of their repurchases and BRK's addition of AAPL shares. Notably, the 79.1% increase is much more than the simple sum of their individual repurchases (18.0% for AAPL and 11.6% for BRK). That is why in my view, this is a textbook example of 1+1>2.The 4% Buyback Taxes and Final ThoughtsRisks specific to either company have been discussed by many other SA authors, and I won't further add on here. Here, I will concentrate on the risks specific to the type A and B transactions (i.e., BRK's ownership of AAPL shares and their buybacks) analyzed in this article.A main risk involves the possibility of a higher buyback tax. President Biden recently proposed quadrupling the 1% tax on stock buybacks (with the intention of encouraging companies to invest more in growth instead of boosting the returns for shareholders). Such a proposal, if indeed signed into law, could impact the potency of the double buybacks. And the following results are my estimate of the potential impact.As seen, under the same assumptions made before, a 4% tax is projected to cause AAPL to pay a total of $21.03B in taxes in the next 5 years on its repurchases and BRK is projected to pay a total of $3.58B. And their amount spent on repurchases would shrink by these corresponding amounts. These are certainly substantial amounts. However, the overall impact would be minor for both companies. To wit, with a 4% buyback tax, AAPL's share shrinkage is projected to be 17.4% in 5 years, slightly lower than the 18.0% projected without the tax hike. And BRK's share shrinkage is projected to be 11.1%, again also lower than the 11.6% projected without the tax hike.Author Based on Seeking Alpha DataTo conclude, as quintessential perpetual compounders, BRK and AAPL are both good companies to hold for the long term in their own right. When considered together, they just become even more overpowering. Consider a final detail from my above projections, BRK's claim to AAPL's earnings would exceed $11.3 billion in 5 years if current buybacks continue. And BRK's operating cash flow has been \"only\" about $20 billion in recent years. When that time comes, AAPL won't be BRK's runner-up 4th giant. It would be BRK's largest cash cow.That is why, as a BRK and AAPL shareholder, I don't worry about overexposure. These misses were somewhat offset but strong showings elsewhere, with Mac revenue rising by 25.39% year-over-year to $11.51 billion, some distance above the $9.36 billion predicted. That update — called App Tracking Transparency (ATT) — asked iPhone users for permission to share their data across apps and offered the option to opt out of being tracked.</p><p>ATT hammered the ad models of ad-dependent companies like Snap (SNAP) and Facebook-owner Meta (META), while Apple&#39;s ad business has successfully grown its adoption to hit 94.8% year-over-year. Apple&#39;s so-called search ads enable consumers to discover a company&#39;s app when they search on the App Store.</p><p>&#34;I think the momentum we are seeing from Apple is twofold: one, is the native nature of its ad placements which yields better performance generally,&#34; said Shumel Lais, Appsumer&#39;s general manager, via email. &#34;Second, their attribution approach is different to everyone else — thanks to ATT— which also gives them a slight edge.&#34;</p><p>Though Apple&#39;s relationship to consumers isn&#39;t inherently ad-driven, the iPhone maker — like so many tech companies — is becoming an ad network, according to Andrew Boone, analyst at Citizens-owned JMP Securities.</p><p>&#34;The value-add of Apple is clearly not advertising for the consumer,&#34; he said. &#34;There&#39;s always some degradation when ads are introduced to a product, but Apple can get away with it.&#34;</p><p>However, what Apple&#39;s ad business going forward actually looks like remains hazy. We don&#39;t even know enough to know what the consumer privacy issues could be down the line, according to Boone.</p><p>&#34;You don&#39;t know what the product is yet, so it&#39;s hard to see yet how those privacy concerns could play out,&#34; he told Yahoo Finance.</p><p>Here&#39;s where things stand. Apple&#39;s ads are currently focused on its app store, but there&#39;s evidence that Apple isn&#39;t looking to stop there and that the company is building out new ad-centric products. For example, Apple&#39;s currently looking to make key digital advertising hires, and is reportedly even looking to double the size of its ad team.</p><p>&#34;So, they&#39;re building something, we just don&#39;t know what it is,&#34; Boone said.</p><p>He added that comparing Apple&#39;s ads to, say, Facebook&#39;s provides no clarity on where things are headed, as they are such different use cases.</p><p>The digital ads market overall is struggling right now, as ad revenues have declined across the industry. Macroeconomic headwinds have hurt ad spending, and there&#39;s reason to believe many of those headwinds will remain in place for the foreseeable future, down to Fed Chair Jerome Powell&#39;s hawkish message recently at Jackson Hole.</p><p>Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) — the parent company of Google and YouTube — has seen its shares fall approximately 25% year-to-date.</p><p>Meanwhile, Meta shares are down about 52% year-to-date.</p><h2>What might be coming down the pike</h2><p>The long-standing Google-Facebook ad duopoly is in flux, according to Lais.</p><p>&#34;I don’t think that duopoly is over,&#34; he said. &#34;Not sure if there is a word for triopoly, but that’s the future, if Apple continues to invest and innovate. Meta remains prominent with massive reach, great ad placements and targeting options for marketers.&#34;</p><p>Additionally, Google and Meta aren&#39;t the only ones whose advertising businesses are being challenged. At the lower end of the market, TikTok has surpassed Snap in both advertiser adoption and share-of-wallet, a metric that assesses how much specific consumers spend on a given brand, versus that brand&#39;s competitors.</p><p>&#34;TikTok&#39;s audience is narrower than Meta and Google’s and their creative production is very different,&#34;
