That’s why the stock is “still a strong buy,” the bank said.</p><p>The stock is a good bet for investors looking for assets with strong growth drivers, solid pricing power, and earnings growth that can outpace inflation, analyst Keith Weiss said in a research note Tuesday.</p><p>“Bottom line, Microsoft positions well against multiple secular growth trends,” he said.</p><p>Weiss foresees Microsoft (ticker: MSFT) sustaining a 15% revenue compound annual growth rate through calendar year 2026, driven by two broad commercial growth opportunities. The first is Microsoft’s base of more than 400 million information workers that are using the Office suite, from Microsoft Teams to Defender endpoint security. He believes the total commercial Office revenue base could reach more than $60 billion in 2026.</p><p>The second opportunity is to leverage the company’s cloud computing and data managing platforms for broader enterprise solutions, he said.</p><p>Weiss estimated that around $120 billion, or roughly two-thirds of the $190 billion increase in overall revenue up to 2026, could come from Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing service. The changes weren&#39;t yet in place for the first half of 2021, creating tough comparables for the first two quarters of 2022. Wehner estimated that iOS would cost Meta roughly $10 billion in ad revenue this year.</p><p>Meta spends a ton of money on research and development, so I wouldn&#39;t be surprised to see the company eventually find a workaround for the iOS challenges. However, it&#39;s having a significant impact on Meta&#39;s short-term operations.</p><h2>2. Meta is stepping up investments in the metaverse</h2><p>This quarter was the first under Meta&#39;s new reporting structure, where it pulled its social media platforms and metaverse segments apart, showing how they each stand on their own. The metaverse segment, or &#34;Reality Labs,&#34; which contains Oculus, showed significant operating losses.</p><p>Reality Labs segment revenue grew to $877 million, a 22% year-over-year increase, but lost $3.3 billion; the division is receiving heavy investments and probably won&#39;t be profitable for a while. Expenses increased due to higher R&amp;D spending, which Mark Zuckerberg made clear was coming when he announced the company&#39;s name change to Meta.</p><p>Meta is intentionally moving beyond being a social media company, so owning the stock means that you are buying into the company&#39;s metaverse plans. The company generated $12.5 billion in free cash flow in Q4 2021, a 35% year-over-year increase, even with the additional spending. The social media platforms are Meta&#39;s cash cow, so the thought of a potential decline could alarm investors. But it&#39;s also important to consider that Meta collectively has 2.82 billion daily active users across its family of apps like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and 3.59 billion people use the apps monthly.</p><p>There are 7.9 billion people in the world, so it seems fair that Meta&#39;s networks have become so large that it will become harder to pick up new users at some point. Generating more revenue per user seems like a more critical metric now, and the average revenue per Facebook user grew to $11.57 in Q4 2021, a 14% increase from Q4 2020. Investors will want to keep an eye on user metrics to ensure that, at worst, user growth plateaus instead of accelerating user losses.</p><h2>Is the stock a buy?</h2><p>Meta looks like a company in a transition period; its social media networks aren&#39;t delivering the type of growth that investors might have come to expect. Still, Meta is about as close to being a social media monopoly as you can get, and the business is generating more free cash flow each quarter than most companies do as revenue in a year.</p><p>The stock now trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of just 17, which seems like a bargain for a company with the global reach and massive free cash flows that Meta produces. It really shouldn’t be. The market has already declared a victory in the electric vehicle transition. Still, the math behind that kind of market share shift and growth is something to behold.</p><p>“Most auto investors we speak with still struggle with the idea that Tesla could ever be bigger than either GM or Ford,” wrote Jonas in a report published Thursday.</p><p>But Jonas doesn’t find the idea hard to grasp, at all. In fact, he believes Tesla sales will be larger that GM plus Ford by 2027.</p><p>There is one catch with his thought experiment. Tesla will be bigger than both on a “run-rate” basis — essentially annualizing whatever data is most recent. Tesla, for instance, sold roughly 309,000 cars in the fourth quarter of 2021. Using Jonas’ math, the EV pioneer is producing cars at a run-rate of roughly 1.24 million units.</p><p>Tesla’s fourth-quarter sales came in at roughly $25 billion, putting its run-rate sales at $100 billion or so. GM’s amounted to $33.5 billion, or an annual run rate of about $134 billion. And Ford’s came in at $37.7 billion,or an annual run rate of about $151 billion.</p><p>For January, Jonas calculates Tesla had 4% of the dollar value of U.S. sales and he estimates the company’s share of unit sales was about 3.5%. Tesla’s vehicles are more expensive than the average vehicle.</p><p>By the end of 2026, Jonas figures Tesla will have 10% unit share of the U.S. market. His estimates for GM and Ford unit share are roughly 14% and 11%, respectively. Tesla will still have higher average selling prices by then.</p><p>Put it all together and Jonas projects run rate sales for Tesla at the end of 2026 at about $300 billion. GM and Ford should still be stuck around $150 billion each.</p><p>For Jonas’ clients, he’d better be right. Tesla is already priced like it’s going to win market share. Its sales might still trail GM and Ford, the Tesla dwarfs every other auto maker on one key metric: market capitalization.</p><p>Tesla’s market cap is roughly $900 billion, which is roughly six times the combined market value of GM and Ford.</p><p>With a disparity like that, Tesla will need to keep growing in 2027 and beyond. Jonas definitely sees that happening. He has Tesla “share of wallet,” which is essentially unit share times average pricing, to 23% of the U.S. market by the end of the decade.</p><p>On Friday, Tesla stock rose 3.6% closing at $923.32. The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.5%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.1%.</p><p>Right now, Wall Street is seriously wondering what Jonas could be thinking. If he is right, his clients won’t only be happy. It really shouldn’t be. The market has already declared a victory in the electric vehicle transition. Still, the math behind that kind of market share shift and growth is something to behold.“Most auto investors we speak with still struggle with the idea that Tesla could ever be bigger than either GM or Ford,” wrote Jonas in a report published Thursday.But Jonas doesn’t find the idea hard to grasp, at all. In fact, he believes Tesla sales will be larger that GM plus Ford by 2027.There is one catch with his thought experiment. Tesla will be bigger than both on a “run-rate” basis — essentially annualizing whatever data is most recent. Tesla, for instance, sold roughly 309,000 cars in the fourth quarter of 2021. Using Jonas’ math, the EV pioneer is producing cars at a run-rate of roughly 1.24 million units.Tesla’s fourth-quarter sales came in at roughly $25 billion, putting its run-rate sales at $100 billion or so. GM’s amounted to $33.5 billion, or an annual run rate of about $134 billion. And Ford’s came in at $37.7 billion,or an annual run rate of about $151 billion.For January, Jonas calculates Tesla had 4% of the dollar value of U.S. sales and he estimates the company’s share of unit sales was about 3.5%. Tesla’s vehicles are more expensive than the average vehicle.By the end of 2026, Jonas figures Tesla will have 10% unit share of the U.S. market. His estimates for GM and Ford unit share are roughly 14% and 11%, respectively. Tesla will still have higher average selling prices by then.Put it all together and Jonas projects run rate sales for Tesla at the end of 2026 at about $300 billion. GM and Ford should still be stuck around $150 billion each.For Jonas’ clients, he’d better be right. Tesla is already priced like it’s going to win market share. In the following months, Gutierrez tucked up to $1,000 in a savings account just in case he had to cover any additional taxes.</p><p>He still holds a small amount of GameStop, just for the good memories of a &#34;whirlwind&#34; time.</p><p>Gutierrez was almost one of the lucky ones. A year ago, the short squeeze on stocks like GameStop and AMC became a social-media phenomenon and Wall Street morality play wrapped into one pandemic-era event.</p><p>Now, the early 2021 trading frenzy could represent something else: a lesson for new retail investors on the perils of bad tax planning.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4154d4c9c195b56d48414d08ae1e6737\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"635\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Future taxes weren’t exactly what Jason Gutierrez was thinking about in the heights of the early 2021 GameStop saga.</span></p><p>If someone bought and sold last year, but plowed all their profits from meme stocks and cryptocurrency back into the market -- without putting aside cash for taxes on the capital gains -- they may have a smaller 2022 portfolio to pay for a 2021 tax bill.</p><p>After hitting a share price high of $324 in late January, GameStop stock closed Wednesday at $100.11. In several price spikes last year, AMC jumped from $3.51 to $13.26 in January, soaring to $59.26 in mid-June; the stock closed Wednesday at $15.40.</p><p>Meanwhile, the value of bitcoin  plummeted from nearly $64,000 in early November and now hovers below $40,000. In that same span, ethereum  dropped from close to $5,000 to less than $3,000.</p><p>This is coinciding with the income-tax season. The IRS wants taxpayers to pay tax liabilities by April 18.</p><p>The concern, some financial experts say, is there may be too many others who didn&#39;t have the same foresight, causing their good memories to turn bad.</p><p>&#34;We&#39;re worried that some of these newer individual investors might be receiving a tax bill that they aren&#39;t prepared for,&#34; said Lindsey Bell, chief markets and money strategist at Ally, a financial-services company with banking, lending and broker offerings.</p><blockquote>‘We’re worried that some of these newer individual investors might be receiving a tax bill that they aren’t prepared for.’”</blockquote><blockquote>— Lindsey Bell, chief markets and money strategist at Ally</blockquote><p>Here&#39;s one sign of the times: A 60% year-over-year increase in the size of the estimated tax payments that Ally bank customers sent to the IRS for the fourth quarter.</p><p>&#34;The largest component of that, based on our own analysis, is likely the payments related to stock gains,&#34; Bell said.</p><p>&#34;I think the meme stockers don&#39;t actually know about their problem yet,&#34; said Matt Metras, an enrolled agent with MDM Financial Services, a Rochester, N.Y.-based tax preparation and bookkeeping firm with a specialty in cryptocurrency.</p><p>That will happen once their brokerage platforms send along tax forms recording the person&#39;s stock-market proceeds and losses, he noted. &#34;That&#39;s when I think they are going to be in for a surprise.&#34;</p><p>These forms are on the way. Robinhood users can access their 1099s in mid-February, a spokesman said. TD Ameritrade has been sending its 1099s since mid-January and will wrap the process in the coming weeks, a spokeswoman said. Charles Schwab Corp., where Gutierrez traded, will make the forms available online by the end of the first week in February.</p><p>Some but not all cryptocurrency exchanges send tax forms to users, Metras noted. The recently passed infrastructure bill requires people and entities who regularly carry out digital-asset transfers to report those transactions to the IRS. The hotly disputed reporting requirements are scheduled to take effect in 2024.</p><p><b>IRS rules on selling stocks</b></p><p>It&#39;s tough to say how many people will find themselves in a jam. On one hand, with the pandemic giving rise to the &#34;retail bro,&#34; 10 million new brokerage accounts were opened in 2020, according to J.D. Power, a consumer analytics firm.</p><p>On the other hand, as companies like GameStop and AMC briefly reached the stratosphere, it was in no small part thanks to the buy-and-hold strategy from people on Reddit&#39;s WallStreetBets. That &#34;diamond hands&#34; approach could be a saving grace, come tax time.</p><p>The tax on capital gains can be as much as 20% when the sale or &#34;realization&#34; happens at least one year after the purchase. (The tax is 0% for people making up to $40,4000 and 15% for individuals making between $40,400 and $445,850, the IRS says)</p><p>If the purchase and sale happens within a year, however, that&#39;s a short-term capital gain and the proceeds count as ordinary income. That&#39;s subject to income tax brackets which can run up to 37%.</p><p>The IRS &#34;wash sale rule&#34; essentially blocks investors from taking a capital loss (which reduces their tax exposure) if they buy the same or substantially same securities in the 30 days before the loss or the 30 days after.</p><p>Metras said this rule increases tax bills every year -- and he&#39;s expecting the same this year. Many clients playing the market &#34;don&#39;t realize that they can&#39;t deduct those loses and they have a ton of gains on paper. I see that every year, especially with platforms that make it super easy to trade a lot like Robinhood,&#34; he said.</p><p>Robinhood does notify users about the wash sale rule in its help center, a spokesman noted.</p><p><b>Crypto concerns &#39;People are going to be left holding a bag and owing taxes&#39;</b></p><p>There are parallels between 2021 and the recent past, said Jordan Bass, a CPA at his Los Angeles-based accounting firm, Taxing Cryptocurrency, and a tax attorney specializing in digital assets.</p><p>Bitcoin experienced a significant drop in early 2018, Bass said. &#34;The cascading effect of prices depreciating and people selling and panic selling is still there and people are going to be left holding a bag and owing taxes. They can arrange installment agreements or they can try to arrange an &#34;offer in compromise&#34; with the IRS. For these offers, the tax collector will accept less than the full liability, but there are a string of caveats. (Read more about those rules here.)</p><p>When some crypto investors get in a tax bind, Bass said it&#39;s not that they can&#39;t afford to settle their tab if they started to liquidate. It&#39;s that they&#39;re not willing, because they think the market that went down will come back up again -- and soon.</p><p>&#34;If they bet correctly and the market does come back, yes, that&#39;s brilliant. But if they bet incorrectly, it&#39;s not. The reason why I say the word &#39;bet&#39; is because it&#39;s almost like a gamble,&#34; Bass said.</p><p>Bitcoin owners are hoping for a jump back to over $55,000 in six months, according to a Morning Consult poll on Tuesday.</p><p>GameStop, meanwhile, was a turning point for Gutierrez. But the stock&#39;s price actually peaked  in January 2021 and had fallen 79% through the end of 2021.</p><p>Peloton Interactive Inc. is very much in-play. </p><p>During the earlier stages of the pandemic, investors seeing stocks such as <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ZM\">Zoom</a> Video Communications Inc. (ZM) and DocuSign Inc. rocketing during lockdowns realized  they couldn&#39;t go up forever. But they also didn&#39;t know how long the initial lockdown period would last, and they might have been afraid of missing out. Investors or traders might have scored tidy profits if they jumped on the bandwagon and got off in time.</p><p>Getting back to Peloton, the share price price more than doubled during the first half of 2020. So that sets the stage for a screen of stocks that have gone through pandemic boom-and-bust cycles.</p><p><b>Pandemic winners transform into losers</b></p><p>The screen begins with the Russell 1000 Index , which includes the largest American companies that are publicly traded, weighted by market capitalization.</p><p>Among the Russell 1000, 20 stocks doubled in price, at least, from the end of 2019 through June 20, 2020. You might consider likely the companies are to continue or resume a steady growth path leading to consistent profits.</p><p>Leaving the group in the same order, here are projected compound annual growth rates (CAGR) for sales through calendar 2023. We&#39;re using calendar-year estimates because some of the companies have fiscal years that don&#39;t match the calendar. But the stock's price actually peaked  in January 2021 and had fallen 79% through the end of 2021.Peloton Interactive Inc. is very much in-play. During the earlier stages of the pandemic, investors seeing stocks such as Zoom Video Communications Inc. (ZM) and DocuSign Inc. rocketing during lockdowns realized  they couldn't go up forever. But they also didn't know how long the initial lockdown period would last, and they might have been afraid of missing out. Investors or traders might have scored tidy profits if they jumped on the bandwagon and got off in time.Getting back to Peloton, the share price price more than doubled during the first half of 2020. So that sets the stage for a screen of stocks that have gone through pandemic boom-and-bust cycles.Pandemic winners transform into losersThe screen begins with the Russell 1000 Index , which includes the largest American companies that are publicly traded, weighted by market capitalization.Among the Russell 1000, 20 stocks doubled in price, at least, from the end of 2019 through June 20, 2020.
