Meta was a $900 billion company when earnings came out; you rarely see stocks this big make such a dramatic move.

But the earnings report sent a clear message that the business is changing. Is change good? The market's reaction doesn't seem to think so, but things might not be what they seem. Here are three major takeaways from the quarter that could clue investors in on whether Meta is a buy or not.

1. Privacy changes are hurting the ad business

In the spring, Apple launched changes to its iOS platform to limit how digital advertisers tracked and targeted iPhone users. If you have an iPhone, you have probably seen this; apps will ask you to opt into being tracked. Users can opt out of being tracked, making Meta's advertising platform less effective. The company began to feel its impact in its 2021 Q3, but management revealed the full scope of its effect in Q4.

CFO David Wehner revealed 2022 Q1 revenue guidance that called for growth of just 3% to 11% year over year, a potentially shockingly low guide considering the company's revenue just grew 20% year over year in 2021 Q4.

While management mentioned competition from apps like TikTok, Apple's iOS changes are a big culprit for the low guidance. The changes weren't yet in place for the first half of 2021, creating tough comparables for the first two quarters of 2022. Wehner estimated that iOS would cost Meta roughly $10 billion in ad revenue this year.

Meta spends a ton of money on research and development, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the company eventually find a workaround for the iOS challenges. However, it's having a significant impact on Meta's short-term operations.

2. Meta is stepping up investments in the metaverse

This quarter was the first under Meta's new reporting structure, where it pulled its social media platforms and metaverse segments apart, showing how they each stand on their own. The metaverse segment, or "Reality Labs," which contains Oculus, showed significant operating losses.

Reality Labs segment revenue grew to $877 million, a 22% year-over-year increase, but lost $3.3 billion; the division is receiving heavy investments and probably won't be profitable for a while. Meta was a $900 billion company when earnings came out; you rarely see stocks this big make such a dramatic move. But the earnings report sent a clear message that the business is changing. Is change good? The market's reaction doesn't seem to think so, but things might not be what they seem. Here are three major takeaways from the quarter that could clue investors in on whether Meta is a buy or not.1. Privacy changes are hurting the ad businessIn the spring, Apple launched changes to its iOS platform to limit how digital advertisers tracked and targeted iPhone users. If you have an iPhone, you have probably seen this; apps will ask you to opt into being tracked. Users can opt out of being tracked, making Meta's advertising platform less effective. The company began to feel its impact in its 2021 Q3, but management revealed the full scope of its effect in Q4.Image source: Getty Images.CFO David Wehner revealed 2022 Q1 revenue guidance that called for growth of just 3% to 11% year over year, a potentially shockingly low guide considering the company's revenue just grew 20% year over year in 2021 Q4.While management mentioned competition from apps like TikTok, Apple's iOS changes are a big culprit for the low guidance. The changes weren't yet in place for the first half of 2021, creating tough comparables for the first two quarters of 2022. Wehner estimated that iOS would cost Meta roughly $10 billion in ad revenue this year.Meta spends a ton of money on research and development, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the company eventually find a workaround for the iOS challenges. However, it's having a significant impact on Meta's short-term operations.2. Meta is stepping up investments in the metaverseThis quarter was the first under Meta's new reporting structure, where it pulled its social media platforms and metaverse segments apart, showing how they each stand on their own. The metaverse segment, or \"Reality Labs,\" which contains Oculus, showed significant operating losses.Reality Labs segment revenue grew to $877 million, a 22% year-over-year increase, but lost $3.3 billion; the division is receiving heavy investments and probably won't be profitable for a while. Expenses increased due to higher R&D spending, which Mark Zuckerberg made clear was coming when he announced the company's name change to Meta.Meta is intentionally moving beyond being a social media company, so owning the stock means that you are buying into the company's metaverse plans. The company generated $12.5 billion in free cash flow in Q4 2021, a 35% year-over-year increase, even with the additional spending. As the chart shows, Meta is spending a lot of that on buying back shares, which only becomes more effective at a lower share price, because the same amount of money can take more shares off the market, helping boost earnings per share.FB Stock Buybacks (TTM) data by YCharts3. Has Facebook peaked?Facebook's daily active user count declined for the first time in 2021 Q4, although slightly, falling to 1.929 billion from 1.930 billion the prior quarter. The social media platforms are Meta's cash cow, so the thought of a potential decline could alarm investors. It really shouldn’t be. The market has already declared a victory in the electric vehicle transition. Still, the math behind that kind of market share shift and growth is something to behold.

“Most auto investors we speak with still struggle with the idea that Tesla could ever be bigger than either GM or Ford,” wrote Jonas in a report published Thursday.

But Jonas doesn’t find the idea hard to grasp, at all. In fact, he believes Tesla sales will be larger that GM plus Ford by 2027.

There is one catch with his thought experiment. Tesla will be bigger than both on a “run-rate” basis — essentially annualizing whatever data is most recent. Tesla, for instance, sold roughly 309,000 cars in the fourth quarter of 2021. It really shouldn’t be. The market has already declared a victory in the electric vehicle transition. Still, the math behind that kind of market share shift and growth is something to behold.“Most auto investors we speak with still struggle with the idea that Tesla could ever be bigger than either GM or Ford,” wrote Jonas in a report published Thursday. But Jonas doesn’t find the idea hard to grasp, at all. In fact, he believes Tesla sales will be larger that GM plus Ford by 2027.There is one catch with his thought experiment. Tesla will be bigger than both on a “run-rate” basis — essentially annualizing whatever data is most recent. Tesla, for instance, sold roughly 309,000 cars in the fourth quarter of 2021. Using Jonas’ math, the EV pioneer is producing cars at a run-rate of roughly 1.24 million units.Tesla’s fourth-quarter sales came in at roughly $25 billion, putting its run-rate sales at $100 billion or so.

Expenses increased due to higher R&D spending, which Mark Zuckerberg made clear was coming when he announced the company's name change to Meta.

Meta is intentionally moving beyond being a social media company, so owning the stock means that you are buying into the company's metaverse plans. The company generated $12.5 billion in free cash flow in Q4 2021, a 35% year-over-year increase, even with the additional spending. As the chart shows, Meta is spending a lot of that on buying back shares, which only becomes more effective at a lower share price, because the same amount of money can take more shares off the market, helping boost earnings per share.

FB Stock Buybacks (TTM) data by YCharts

3. Has Facebook peaked?

Facebook's daily active user count declined for the first time in 2021 Q4, although slightly, falling to 1.929 billion from 1.930 billion the prior quarter. The social media platforms are Meta's cash cow, so the thought of a potential decline could alarm investors. But it's also important to consider that Meta collectively has 2.82 billion daily active users across its family of apps like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and 3.59 billion people use the apps monthly.

There are 7.9 billion people in the world, so it seems fair that Meta's networks have become so large that it will become harder to pick up new users at some point. Generating more revenue per user seems like a more critical metric now, and the average revenue per Facebook user grew to $11.57 in Q4 2021, a 14% increase from Q4 2020. Investors will want to keep an eye on user metrics to ensure that, at worst, user growth plateaus instead of accelerating user losses. Is the stock a buy?Meta looks like a company in a transition period; its social media networks aren't delivering the type of growth that investors might have come to expect. Still, Meta is about as close to being a social media monopoly as you can get, and the business is generating more free cash flow each quarter than most companies do as revenue in a year. The stock now trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of just 17, which seems like a bargain for a company with the global reach and massive free cash flows that Meta produces. Even if top-line growth slows for a few years as Meta builds up Reality Labs, the company's share buybacks could help generate solid earnings growth for investors.Meta is a company that needs to prove itself as it changes directions toward the metaverse, but if you buy the story behind it, it's hard not to like the stock at this price.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":546,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9098099634,"gmtCreate":1643958356120,"gmtModify":1676533876427,"author":{"id":"4106918167824150","authorId":"4106918167824150","name":"Varunkh15","avatar":"https://static.itradeup.com/news/e959aedac23848943407300eadf98f88","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4106918167824150","authorIdStr":"4106918167824150"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Meta is not going anywhere. Investors were not at all happy about the significant cash burn in the company's Reality Labs segment, which is focused on building the metaverse, and in the weaker-than-expected forward guidance.

Meta's stock price fell 22% in after-hours trading following the report's release (and has stayed down), but there are strong arguments in support of investors buying into that weakness. The company's impeccable track record of financial performance suggests it deserves the benefit of the doubt, especially given the opportunities ahead.

Here are two key reasons to buy this dip.

1. The huge potential of the metaverse is worth the billions being invested

Meta Platforms is the largest social media company in the world, with its Facebook asset alone used by 2.91 billion people every month -- a startling 36% of the entire global population. But still, the company refuses to slip into complacency, as evidenced by its sizeable (and increasing) investment in the metaverse.

This new virtual world is being constructed by Meta's Reality Labs segment, which the company now reports separately from the rest of its platforms. It believes that in the future, its users will exist as virtual avatars of themselves within the metaverse, where they can teleport to different experiences and carry inventories of digital goods. That presents a significant financial opportunity for Meta Platforms, because the metaverse could feature its own self-sustaining economy.

But when the company revealed its fourth-quarter 2021 result, investors were surprised at just how much money was being spent on this project.

While it appears the Reality Labs segment is bleeding an increasing amount of red ink, Meta Platforms is playing the long game. One estimate by Bloomberg Intelligence suggests themetaversewill be an $800 billion opportunity by 2024, with a 12.4% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) that could see it double to $1.6 trillion by the end of this decade alone. Therefore, in context, the $10.1 billion Reality Labs lost during 2021 could be a mere drop in the ocean compared to its future revenue potential.

2. The stock is a great value

Despite Meta's substantial commitment to building the metaverse, the company as a whole is making a significant amount of money. For the 2021 full year, it reported $39.3 billion in operating income, which translated into $13.77 inearnings per share.

Its stock trades at $239 right now, placing itsprice-to-earnings multipleat just 17.1. That's 50% cheaper than the technology-centric Nasdaq-100 index, which trades at a multiple of 33.7. Meta has a stellar track record of revenue and earnings growth over the last decade, which likely warrants a much richer stock valuation.

But putting the past aside, the short term might be bumpy as Meta contends with recent changes to user privacy policies forApple's iOS andAlphabet's Google Andriod OS, which are making it harder for advertisers to accurately target their desired audiences. That, combined with lingering supply chain issues hurting businesses' appetite to spend on marketing, prompted Meta to issue conservative guidance for the first quarter of 2022.

There is another concern. Facebook saw its first sequential quarterly decline in daily active users in company history, and although it was a mere 0.05% contraction in user base, it highlights the difficulty in generating growth for a single platform with over 1.9 billion users. But on the plus side, Meta recorded an average revenue per user of $9.39 for the fourth quarter, its highest in at least two years.

Investor takeaway

Meta is an incredibly innovative company, so issues like ad targeting and short-term supply chain issues will likely be overcome given enough time. It favors a long-term investment approach, especially given the opportunity in the metaverse that lies ahead. If the new virtual world grows as large as some estimates suggest, the company's future financial performance could trounce anything it has achieved in the past. Therefore, picking up Meta Platforms stock on this dip could be a game-changer for your portfolio.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
2 Big Reasons to Buy the Dip in Meta Platforms' Stock
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n2 Big Reasons to Buy the Dip in Meta Platforms' Stock\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-02-04 11:48 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Key PointsThe metaverse could be a $1.6 trillion opportunity by 2030.The opportunity dwarfs the cash that Meta's Reality Labs segment is burning trying to build it.Meta Platforms, the parent company ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2022/02/03/2-big-reasons-buy-the-dip-in-meta-platforms-stock/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1180306841","content_text":"Key PointsThe metaverse could be a $1.6 trillion opportunity by 2030.The opportunity dwarfs the cash that Meta's Reality Labs segment is burning trying to build it.Meta Platforms, the parent company of popular social media apps Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, reported its full-year 2021 earnings on Feb. 2.
