Crypto Market Surges 20% as Strategy Piles Up $6.7 Billion Cash While BitMine Doubles Down on Ether

Stock News11:28

Cryptocurrency prices have skyrocketed recently, but two industry heavyweights, Strategy (MSTR.US) and BitMine Immersion Technologies (BMNR.US), are displaying fundamentally different capital allocation strategies during this rally.

The current market upswing is driven by falling US Treasury yields, renewed optimism in American markets, and a wave of short liquidations. Bitcoin has surged over 20%, briefly approaching the $80,000 mark, while Ethereum posted a weekly gain of roughly 30%, marking its strongest weekly performance since May 2025. Billions of dollars in bearish positions were forcibly closed, pushing both assets to multi-month highs.

However, amid this market frenzy, Strategy has not added to its Bitcoin holdings. Instead, the company raised approximately $2.01 billion in net proceeds between August 17 and August 23 by selling 18.26 million shares of MSTR common stock. Notably, these funds were not used to purchase BTC. Of the total, $300 million was allocated to its existing USD Reserve account, $136.4 million went toward repurchasing STRC preferred shares, and the remaining majority was injected into a newly established US Dollar Cash account. As of August 23, the company's total dollar-denominated liquidity reached $6.69 billion, comprising $5.1 billion in USD Reserve and $1.59 billion in US Dollar Cash. The former is primarily used to service preferred share dividends and debt interest payments, while the latter can be deployed for Bitcoin purchases, securities buybacks, or convertible bond redemptions.

Data compiled by WoofunAI shows that Strategy currently holds 840,447 Bitcoins at a total acquisition cost of approximately $63.36 billion, with an average cost basis of $75,385 per coin. Even though the cryptocurrency price has climbed back above its cost level, the company still chooses to hold cash. Additionally, the firm repurchased 1.431 million shares of STRC preferred stock, retaining $516.6 million in authorized capacity for future preferred share buybacks, alongside a $1 billion authorization for MSTR common stock repurchases. This strategy indicates that Strategy is leveraging its strong liquidity position to wait for lower price points or discounted securities opportunities, rather than blindly chasing momentum.

In stark contrast to Strategy's conservative approach, BitMine Immersion Technologies has chosen an aggressive accumulation path. Facing Ethereum's roughly 30% weekly surge, the company purchased another 32,447 ETH this week. As of August 23, its total holdings reached 5.85 million ETH, representing approximately 4.8% of Ethereum's total circulating supply, edging ever closer to its goal of holding 5% of all Ethereum. Since launching its treasury accumulation plan in June 2025, BitMine has maintained weekly purchases even as prices climbed back above $2,400.

Chairman Tom Lee believes this rally marks the beginning of a major upward cycle. Looking back at historical patterns since 2021, Ethereum has experienced two similar single-week surges, each followed by even larger gains in subsequent months. BitMine has staked the vast majority of its Ethereum holdings, with approximately 5.07 million ETH (87% of its treasury position) currently in staking, simultaneously benefiting from price appreciation while earning staking rewards. According to Tom Lee, staking income is projected to reach $330 million on an annualized basis.

By comparison, BitMine's cash and marketable securities stand at just $308 million, with its balance sheet nearly entirely committed to Ethereum. This high-leverage asset allocation provides significantly greater upside elasticity than Strategy during price rallies, but it also carries substantially higher volatility risk.

The contrasting strategies of these two companies reveal a deep divergence in the current crypto treasury market. Strategy is capitalizing on market enthusiasm to raise funds and stockpile $6.69 billion in cash, building a buffer for future market turbulence. Its capital allocation has evolved beyond the simple "issue stock to buy Bitcoin" model, now incorporating diversified buybacks and cash management to navigate uncertainty. BitMine, meanwhile, is using the same market conditions to push toward its 5% of total ETH supply target, essentially betting that Ethereum's current rally is far from over.

Structurally, Strategy's conservatism stems from its heavy preferred share dividend and debt interest obligations, requiring substantial dollar cash reserves to ensure liquidity safety. In contrast, BitMine leverages Ethereum's native yield-generating capabilities to maintain greater room for aggressive maneuvers. As market volatility intensifies, these two distinctly different approaches will face increasingly severe tests. Investors should closely monitor both companies' future capital flows and position changes to gauge the next phase of the cryptocurrency market's trajectory.
