7月5日，据华尔街日报报道，美国当地时间周六，美国在首都华盛顿举行独立250周年庆典。在创纪录高温、雷暴天气的背景下，总统特朗普发表讲话，强调“美国例外论”。
特朗普在周六晚间表示：“250年来，美国一直是全世界所有国家中的希望、承诺、光明和荣耀。放眼全球，没有任何国家能与我们相比。”
当天早些时候，由于华盛顿经历了有记录以来最炎热的独立日，数千名民众在排队数小时准备参加“大美国州博览会”（Great American State Fair）和当晚“向美国致敬”（Salute to America）庆典时，被执法部门要求撤离华盛顿国家广场。数百人前往附近的博物馆和联邦政府大楼避暑。随后，国家广场重新开放，民众重新进入安保区域参加当晚庆典。特朗普于当晚11点过后登台，比原定时间晚了一个多小时。他表示：“美国的实力和力量并不是值得羞愧的事情，而是我们深感自豪的事情。”
