HK Opening Bell | Hong Kong Stocks Flat at Open; AI Hardware Gains; Biren Tech Up 4%

HK Opening Bell09:23

1. Market Overview

The Hong Kong market started Tuesday on a subdued note. The Hang Seng Index (HSI) edged down 0.07% to 24,826.19, while the China Enterprises Index (HSCEI) slipped 0.04% to 8,372.67. The Hang Seng Tech Index was virtually unchanged, easing a marginal 0.00% to 4,765.49, signaling a wait-and-see tone after Monday’s gains.

Early trading interest gravitated toward artificial-intelligence hardware developers and resource plays. AI chip name Biren Technology led initial advances, while coal producer Yancoal Australia and EV-battery maker CALB attracted bargain hunters. Conversely, property heavyweight SHK Properties and new-energy material suppliers such as Ganfeng Lithium came under pressure, keeping headline indices range-bound.

5. Opening Summary

The Hang Seng Index opened nearly unchanged, slipping 0.07% amid a cautious mood as investors weighed mixed global cues against domestic policy expectations. The HSCEI and the Tech Index also hovered around the flat line, indicating a lack of decisive direction in early dealings.

Large-cap tech was mixed: Meituan, Bilibili and Baidu dragged, but hardware-oriented names such as SMIC and Lenovo eked out gains. Tencent and Alibaba were modestly higher, helping to stabilise the Tech Index near 4,765.

Among individual movers, AI chip designer Biren Technology jumped more than 4%, extending its recent strength, while coal producer Yancoal Australia gained over 3% after upbeat commodity price forecasts. By contrast, miner MMG slumped more than 5% on profit-taking, and Ganfeng Lithium fell nearly 3% as battery-metal prices softened.

Theme-wise, investor attention remained on artificial-intelligence hardware, clean-energy batteries and resource plays, while traditional property names lagged. No major IPOs debuted this morning, but pre-marketing activity continues to build for several summer listings.
