A new report titled "The Birth of the Trillion-Dollar Billionaire" has been released by Oxfam, a global organization dedicated to eliminating inequality. The report details the impact of Tesla Motors on the widening wealth gap in the United States, identifying the company as a key driver behind Elon Musk's rapidly increasing fortune. This comes as Musk approaches the possibility of becoming the world's first trillion-dollar billionaire.
In recent years, a primary driver of Musk's immense wealth has been his ownership stake in Tesla Motors. The report argues that Tesla's actions have profoundly and systematically exacerbated wealth and power inequality in the US. Using its corporate inequality framework, Oxfam's latest analysis found that Tesla worsens inequality through several methods: the strategic use of tax havens and federal loopholes; maintaining only an illusion of corporate oversight; employing selective practices regarding labor rights; and leveraging Musk's personal influence over the US government to reduce regulatory scrutiny.
Musk's wealth accumulation is the largest the world has ever seen, thanks in part to Tesla. Oxfam's analysis illustrates that a trillion-dollar fortune would enable Musk to cover the entire Gross Domestic Product of a country. For instance, his net worth would surpass the GDP of a wealthy nation like Switzerland, which was $936 billion in 2024. Furthermore, he could repay the total public debt of the world's 31 poorest nations—countries either in debt distress or at high risk, with a combined debt of $205 billion—and still retain more than three-quarters of his personal wealth. Alternatively, he could give $1 billion to 1,000 people, increasing the global number of billionaires by over 30%, from 3,028 to more than 4,000.
Irit Tamir, Senior Director of Corporate Responsibility and Worker Rights at Oxfam America, stated, "No single individual has come so close to amassing a trillion-dollar fortune, and Musk's staggering wealth is not solely the result of hard work or talent. A significant portion of his personal fortune is a direct consequence of a system marred by corporate greed, exploitation, and plunder. However, the issue extends beyond just Musk or Tesla, and we must not overlook the dangerously spreading concentration of oligarchic power within our economy. It is time to reform our political systems so they no longer serve billionaires and the corporations they control, but instead hold them accountable."
Oxfam also pointed out that even if the trillion-dollar milestone is reached, Musk's unprecedented wealth accumulation may not end there. Last November, a majority of Tesla shareholders approved a staggering compensation package that could yield an additional $1 trillion in gains over the next decade. Musk's impending status as a "trillion-dollar billionaire" does not even factor in this potential compensation.
