A blockbuster US jobs report released on Friday has rattled financial markets, intensifying speculation that the Federal Reserve will maintain its aggressive tightening stance. The immediate fallout sent Bitcoin spiraling below the $80,000 mark, as investors braced for a prolonged period of high interest rates.
The stronger-than-expected labor market data quickly cascaded into derivatives, with the probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike in September surging from 52% to 59%. The repricing of monetary policy expectations put significant upward pressure on Treasury yields, with the 2-year note jumping 7.6 basis points. The 10-year and 30-year yields also climbed, rising 3.2 and 1 basis points, respectively. Concurrently, the US dollar index (DXY) strengthened 0.3% to 99.3.
This dynamic creates a dual drag on risk assets like cryptocurrencies. Higher yields boost the appeal of yield-bearing dollar assets, while a firmer dollar increases the cost of financing for crypto positions, amplifying selling pressure across the sector.
The cross-asset reaction, however, tells a story of divergence. Gold, which pays no yield, bore the brunt of the rate-hike repricing, sliding between 1.7% and 2.2%. In equities, futures pointed to a mixed open, with S&P 500 futures down 0.22% while Nasdaq 100 futures inched up 0.07% as of 8:33 AM ET.
Wage data emerged as the critical variable explaining this divergent market response. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% month-over-month and 3.1% year-over-year, signaling persistent inflationary pressures that complicate the Fed's path forward.
Oil markets, meanwhile, charted their own course. Brent crude saw only a modest pullback around the $95 level following the report, but remains on track for a weekly gain exceeding 8% amid escalating US-Iran tensions and persistent supply concerns.
It's worth noting that while the synchronized market moves at 1:30 PM BST can be attributed to the employment data, they don't explain all subsequent price action. Geopolitical factors are increasingly becoming the new anchor for valuations, adding a layer of complexity to the trading environment.
