Bitcoin Slides as Wall Street Risk Pullback Tests Bullish Turn
Crypto stocks broadly fell during regular trading hours with IREN Ltd down 12%, Strive down 11%, Strategy down 6%, Coinbase down 5%.
Bitcoin fell as much as 2.3% toward the lower end of its recent trading range, caught in a broader retreat from risk assets even as crypto analysts have turned sharply more bullish on the token.
The largest digital asset traded around $81,700. Crypto markets weakened as hotter inflation data and a renewed selloff in chipmakers hit appetite for speculative trades across markets. The Nasdaq 100 dropped 2%, the dollar rose to its highest level since May 2025 and traders lifted bets on further Federal Reserve rate hikes after September consumer prices rose at the fastest pace since April.
The move cut against a sharp shift in crypto sentiment. A CryptoQuant report Wednesday showed Bitcoin’s 30-day analyst consensus index rising from minus 18.3 in July to plus 49.2, with the share of bullish analysts climbing to 84% from 37%.
Crypto’s Leverage Machine Finds New Life Beyond Bitcoin Bets
A year after crypto’s historic crash, leveraged trading has yet to regain its old swagger. But the appetite for outsize bets hasn’t disappeared. Increasingly, the machinery that made crypto notorious for speculation is being turned on stocks, commodities and other traditional assets rather than just digital tokens.
New data from Talos show the shift. Across five major trading venues, total open interest in perpetual futures — a gauge of outstanding speculative positions — has fallen to about $67 billion from $81 billion over the past year. Yet open interest in contracts tied to so-called real-world assets has gone from virtually nothing to $9 billion, claiming 14% of the total across those venues.
The retreat from crypto-native bets has been broad. Bitcoin perpetuals have shed roughly $8 billion in open interest, Ether $5 billion and smaller tokens another $10 billion. Growth in contracts linked to traditional assets has only partly offset those losses, suggesting crypto’s speculative machinery is finding new uses even as traders show less appetite for leveraged bets on digital tokens.
