Reports surfaced on the evening of September 8 suggesting that Alibaba is pushing forward with deeper strategic integration of its e-commerce operations. According to the reports, the company's B2B divisions, 1688 and Alibaba International, are being unified under the operational leadership of Zhang Kuo.
Zhang Kuo will oversee the combined operations, while Yu Yong, the previous head of 1688, is set to take on a new role within the Alibaba Group. When approached for confirmation, Alibaba's official channels had not responded at the time of reporting.
Both 1688 and Alibaba International stand as the group's pioneering B2B ventures, with each having operated for over two decades. These platforms cater to domestic wholesale and cross-border wholesale markets, respectively.
Public records indicate that Zhang Kuo, born in 1980, graduated from Tsinghua University's computer science department. He joined Alibaba in 2011 and was reassigned to Alibaba International in July 2017. Currently, he serves as both the General Manager of Alibaba International and a Vice President at the Alibaba Group.
In a related development, Alibaba International recently launched Accio Work, an AI agent designed for cross-border e-commerce merchants. During the company's first-quarter earnings call for fiscal year 2027, held on August 20, it was revealed that over 50,000 paying merchants have already adopted this AI tool since its launch.
