HK Opening Bell | HSTECH Falls 1%; Meituan, Xiaomi, Tencent, Alibaba Drop Between 1% and 2%; CIG Rises 3%; Weichai Power Jumps 10%

HK Opening Bell09:28

1. Market Overview

The Hang Seng Index started the session on the back foot, sliding 0.94% to 24,480.57 as investors pared risk after a weak Wall Street lead and lingering macro uncertainties. The China Enterprises Index retreated 0.97% to 8,127.00, while the Hang Seng Tech Index underperformed, down 1.03% at 4,281.03, reflecting broad-based selling in heavyweight internet and hardware names.

Early flows show defensive rotation away from growth themes. Gold miners, renewable plays and property developers lagged, whereas select industrials and shipping counters bucked the down-trend, buoyed by company-specific catalysts. AI hardware names also saw pockets of interest, with Z.AI and MINIMAX-W advancing despite the softer tone.

5. Opening Summary

The Hang Seng family of indices opened with broad losses as profit-taking dominated early trade. The benchmark slipped nearly 1% and held just above the 24,400 level, while the Tech gauge extended the pull-back seen in U.S. peers overnight. Investor tone is cautious ahead of key central-bank meetings later this week.

Large-cap internet names weighed on sentiment: Tencent, Meituan, Xiaomi, JD-group shares and Baidu all declined between 1–2%, erasing much of last week’s rebound. Lenovo’s 0.6% uptick was the lone bright spot, supported by continued PC demand optimism.

Individual movers were mixed. Heavy-engine maker Weichai Power surged over 10% after announcing stronger-than-expected preliminary quarterly earnings. AI hardware name Z.AI rose almost 3% to a fresh post-listing high, while shipping play SITC gained 3% on Baltic freight strength. On the downside, gold miners slumped as spot gold prices eased, with Lingbao Gold tumbling 3.6%.

Sector-wise, industrial machinery, shipping/logistics and specialised AI hardware outperformed at the open, contrasting with broad weakness in precious-metals miners, aluminum smelters and property developers. No major IPOs debuted this morning, keeping focus on secondary-market catalysts and upcoming policy events.
