Tesla's China chief Wang Hao stated that the company's largest production base, the Shanghai Gigafactory, holds the potential to manufacture humanoid robots in the future. The facility's high efficiency and innovative capabilities are seen as crucial factors that will help CEO Elon Musk rapidly commercialize the technology.
During a Tuesday briefing, Wang noted that CEO Musk has previously identified mass production as a major challenge in building humanoid robots. He described the Shanghai manufacturing division as a "golden key to solving this challenge," though he did not provide specifics on how operations would support the company's robotics business.
"Like other Tesla factories, the Shanghai Gigafactory is capable of taking on significant responsibility for manufacturing all new products, including robots, and contributing to the company," he said. "We are fully confident in embracing the new era of robotics."
This marks the first time a Tesla executive has publicly suggested that the Shanghai plant could be used to produce humanoid robots, a new strategic priority Musk has set for the company.
Musk has previously asserted that Tesla's strengths in artificial intelligence and self-driving technology justify its high market valuation. In January, Tesla announced that following weak profit and delivery figures last year, the company is shifting from a hardware-centric business to a physical AI company.
