White House to Convene Defense Industry Meeting to Boost Ammunition Output Amid Supply Strain

Deep News06:10

This week, the White House will convene a meeting with defense contractors to push for increased ammunition production, as stockpiles come under pressure following nearly four months of conflict with Iran.

President Trump confirmed the meeting. A White House official had previously indicated the gathering would take place on Wednesday.

"We are pushing very hard for weapons production. Some of the car companies, if they have extra capacity, are making deals to make missiles, particularly Patriots," Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday. "We have a lot, but we want to make sure we always have a lot of inventory."

A person familiar with the matter revealed that RTX Corp is expected to participate in the discussions.

General Motors has held talks with RTX and other defense contractors to explore how it can assist these weapons manufacturers in boosting their output. The potential collaborative work could resemble the arrangements under General Motors' agreement with Lockheed Martin.

"I know General Motors is very excited about making weapons," Trump said Monday. "They have some plants that are going to be converted now, and we're going to be making weapons, including Patriots, including Tomahawks, and many other things."

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated in a declaration that Trump has urged defense contractors to "continue producing more American-made weapons." Nonetheless, she added that the U.S. military "has ample ammunition, ordnance, and stockpiles to achieve all of President Trump's strategic objectives and more."
