Trump Says He's Made "Hundreds of Billions" on Stocks, But Not for Himself: "I Do This for Our Country"

Benzinga Earnings09-07 15:00

President Donald Trump said Sunday he’s made enormous sums of money trading stocks, but insisted the gains are for the country, not himself.

‘I Do This for Our Country, Not Myself’

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he does his trading for the country, not himself, and brushed off scrutiny from the Democrats.

“I’ve made Hundreds of Billions of Dollars on Stocks, and many other type Holdings, for the U.S.A., not myself,” he added.

He also shared an AI generated image of himself sitting at the Resolute Desk surrounded by trading screens, one reading “BOUGHT: INTEL $20” and another showing the stock “NOW $95.”

The Intel Bet That’s Paying Off

The Trump administration acquired a roughly 10% stake in Intel Corp. (NASDAQ:INTC) in August 2025, purchasing 433.3 million shares at $20.47 apiece, an $8.9 billion investment made at a discount to the then-market price.

The company’s stock is up 143.27% so far this year and 291.34% over the past year.

Trump’s personal trading and public comments on individual stocks have repeatedly drawn ethics criticism this year.

Calls Grow to Ban Presidential Trading

Democrats have repeatedly pushed for legislation to ban officials from trading on the stock market entirely.

Rep. Eugene Vindman (D-Va.) introduced legislation, the “Sell Your Stocks or Step Down Act,” that would ban the president, vice president and members of Congress from trading stocks, digital assets and prediction market contracts entirely.

Trump’s companies generated more than $1.4 billion from crypto ventures in 2025, including over $520 million from World Liberty Financial token sales and more than $635 million from Official Trump memecoin royalties, according to his financial disclosure.

Market Highs as Vindication

Last week, the president defended the market’s performance amid the Iran conflict, telling reporters he warned his office more than a year ago that confronting Iran would hurt stocks, but that the market has instead kept “hitting new records every day.” “Believe it or not, the stock market will go up,” he said.

Price Action: Intel’s shares closed 4.51% higher on Friday at $95.80 and climbed 0.09% in extended trading.
