ICBC Vice President Wang Jingwu Explains How Major Banks Are Delivering on Low-Carbon Commitments

Deep News10-20

At the 2026 Sustainable Global Leaders Conference held in Shanghai's Huangpu Expo Park from October 20 to 22, ICBC (ASX: 601398) Vice President and Chief Risk Officer Wang Jingwu delivered a keynote speech on the bank's green finance practices, according to a financial news report on October 20.

Wang stated that the world currently faces challenges from climate change and biodiversity loss, and countries around the globe are exploring sustainable development paths that balance growth with ecological protection. China is now at a critical stage where ecological and environmental quality improvement is shifting from quantitative change to qualitative change, making the importance of green development increasingly prominent. Green finance serves as the core tool for channeling capital toward green sectors and plays an irreplaceable role in the global sustainable development process.

Wang further noted that in recent years, ICBC (ASX: 601398) has embraced the philosophy that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets," deepened its green finance development, and enhanced the "green content" of its financial services, striving to make financial resources flow as green water and ecological water that continuously nourishes the natural environment, comprehensively serving the construction of a beautiful China and contributing ICBC's strength to building a shared future for all life on Earth and a clean, beautiful world.

Expanding Green Finance Supply to Serve the Real Economy

Wang elaborated on ICBC's green finance practices from four aspects. First, the bank remains committed to serving the real economy and expanding green finance supply. ICBC launched the "ICBC Green Banking+" distinctive brand, continuously improving green finance coverage, accessibility, and satisfaction, providing integrated services for carbon reduction, pollution reduction, green expansion, and growth, and offering strong financial support for green development. The bank has identified green industries, green trade, and green consumption as key support areas, providing preferential loan rates and tilted credit resource allocation. Currently, ICBC's green loan scale has exceeded 7 trillion yuan, with cumulative domestic green financial bond issuance surpassing 160 billion yuan and overseas issuance exceeding 20 billion US dollars. Its green investment and financing scale maintains a market-leading position, with a product system covering green loans, bonds, funds, leasing, and wealth management, supporting green development across all products and the entire chain.

Driving Innovation to Enrich the Green Finance Toolkit

Second, ICBC remains committed to pioneering innovation and enriching its green finance "toolbox." The bank actively carries out green finance product and service innovation, explores comprehensive green finance services, and continuously expands the boundaries of green finance services, achieving multiple "first-of-its-kind" and "first-batch" innovation results. It has innovatively launched comprehensive green finance service plans for industrial parks, created financial service plans for photovoltaic, water-saving, and hydrogen energy industry chains, and promoted innovation and application of green financing tools. ICBC launched personal carbon accounts on its mobile banking platform, encouraging individual customers to engage in green consumption through financial means. It also created a five-dimensional ESG advisory service system covering strategic planning, implementation, information disclosure, rating optimization, and transaction matching, comprehensively meeting customers' diversified and integrated green development service needs.

Strengthening Environmental Risk Management with a Bottom-Line Approach

Third, ICBC adheres to a bottom-line mindset and strengthens environmental risk management. Following a risk management approach of "comprehensive management, proactive prevention, and intelligent control," the bank has established a relatively complete environmental risk management policy, system, and process. It pioneered industry-leading practices such as green classification management for investment and financing, intelligent environmental risk management mechanisms, and green guidelines for investment and financing. Among large domestic banks, ICBC was the first to incorporate climate risk into its comprehensive risk management system, continuously conducting climate risk stress tests, exploring early warning management for sudden climate risks, and constantly enhancing its climate risk management capabilities.

Contributing Wisdom to Global Green Development Through Win-Win Cooperation

Fourth, ICBC remains committed to win-win cooperation and contributing wisdom to global green development. As the only Chinese institution participating in the drafting of the United Nations' Principles for Responsible Banking, ICBC led the drafting of the "Beijing Initiative for Climate-Friendly Banks," which was released at the Global Systemically Important Financial Institutions conference and received positive responses from domestic and international financial institutions. The bank was among the first to publish environmental risk stress test results, making it one of the earliest financial institutions globally to conduct such research. ICBC also innovatively implemented an ecological protection red line risk control map system, which was showcased at the G20 Summit as a biodiversity finance innovation case, contributing ICBC's wisdom to global biodiversity protection.
